I've had this song, and to a slightly lesser extent this video, inexorably stuck in my head for over a week and a half. I play it at least three times a day, often singing along. James Mercer has such a fantastic voice.
I still remember, that summer of 2012, when i first heard of the shins. I almost never get to hear this kind of sound from the radio, but that day, maybe by some stroke of luck, it did. New Slang was playing- and after the endless slew of awful rehashed pop music that they play ad nauseum- James Mercer's hum, the guitar, the everything, took me by surprise. This shit was entirely new to me. It was magic. My (then) 14 year old self did the right thing and looked up the song on youtube, and lo and behold, it began. I was stuck in that vibe for more than a year. I listened to New Slang, then before i knew it, i'd already went through the entire album. I was stuck in the sound and god was I in love with it. Now, it's the same thing happening all over again. Hearing James' singing, every memory in my head clicks and just goes, "yep, it's still good." A lot of things have happened between then and now, but I still find myself coming back to that moment. I get that people don't always have the same tastes, specially in music, and my tastes as well only count as an opinion, but one thing that i love about it is how personal these things become for us. I don't know where the magic was, whether it was James Mercer's, or the guitar's, or my prepubescent mind under pressure of breaking. Everything felt right, and that's just me and probably a couple thousand of other people as well. Maybe, I hope, someone gets the chance to hear this on the radio and feels the same thing I felt then.
I know exactly what you mean. 2012 my gf at the time introduced me to them and I was already a Modest Mouse and Passion Pit fan so the Shins felt perfect. Ten years later I am still finding new stuff by them. Beautiful and nostalgic sounds!
Didn't like it at first. But it's the Shins so I gave it a few more listens and it really grew on me. So much of their music is like that. The first take has a Meh response, but the more you listen the better it gets.
Same here, and then later at night it just popped inside my head and wouldn't get out. Now I like it... go figure... My problem initially was that I found the lyrics a tad simplistic...? I can get over that...
Yeah I agree, I reckon its the way James writes and his use of metaphors. For me it can sometimes take a while to work out the meaning in the songs, i.e In bed, late at night, silence... BOOM! . How wonderful the line in Pink Bullets about crossed Kite lines being cut is used to describe a failing/failed relationship in such few words yet convey so much emotion. Cant wait to hear the new album.
I bet the music that end up being cut from tapes or right-click emptied from Recycle bins would still sound good. Aussie fan here, but I really dig Deep Sea Diver, and the Shins...and many others at the moment.
Hope this band feels the love cos the love we all give is impossible to measure. you guys are class. seeing this surprise pop up put a smile on my face.
this often happens with for me with shins music, my fist listen of a song will leave me unimpressed but a few weeks later is my favorite song on the album.
I will always respect James Mercers lyrical ability. He can write with the best of them, and I applaud the fact he is staying cheerful, upbeat, and true to the Shins sound. We desperately need some light in today's dark and ever more depressing world. But I simply did not connect with this song. I heard them play this live on the radio last night on A Prarie Home Companion- NPR, and I had the same reaction when this song was debuted. It's exactly Blah blah blah blah. I'm a huge Shins fan seen them in concert and even loved Dead Alive released October 2016, but the melody to this one doesn't reach out and grab me like his others. this one is more of a fluff piece. I'm sure it will grow on me. looking forward to the album release in March!!!
The lyrics are so good in this peice. 🙏💜 I didn't like the melody at first listen but it's grown on me and after reading the lyrics it's made me really appreciate the song.
Lmfao..I will have to copy cat you and use that sometime. They have been my favorite band since high school but just finally got to see them live last November (almost 10 years later)
It's a shame. So you guys have nothing eating those giant spiders. Heard kangroo's eat those all the time. Life in Austria must be much harder than australia.
As with most Shins stuff, this took me a few listens to fall in love with. It's like, "James, what are you doing? Are you really...? Wait... Oh, that doesn't sound toooooo bad... Hm, I could get into this. Shit, this is awesome!"
Lyrics here! "Name For You" My girl if you're lucky one day Rolling down the ancient high street you'll find In the mirror reflects a woman in her prime Can you make your way out? In a world dearly won Well it's yours love You can move it around Given all the drops in the ocean Better take it one sip at a time Somebody with an antique notion Come along to tighten the line They're just afraid of you speaking your mind They've got a name for you girls What's in a name? They got a name for everything All of the clothes that you wear And all of your bits and pieces yeah You're flipping through the check-stand rags it appears There ain't no time to waste, you're getting on in years You can keep your can up If you just never eat again It's a means to a terrible end Even if your plan is successful Have you really got room in your life? Yeah and it's a bland kind of torture You've played the mother and wife But what do you really dream of at night? They've got a name for you girls What's in a name? They've got a name for you girls What's in a name? They got a name for everything All of the clothes that you wear And all of your bits and pieces yeah They've got a name for you girls Some stupid name They've got a name for you girls What's in a name? What's in a name? What's in a name? What's in a name? What's in a name?
with time,as usual, it will get stereo play every day with me and my daughter and I will love it together. Shins are one of the best. Best thing ever ti come out of New Mexico.
These guys are the best songwriters in years. The best since Radiohead in my opinion. Oh! Inverted World, Chutes Too Narrow and Wincing the Night Away are all unbelievably good albums from cover to cover.
This song KEEPS GETTING BETTER EVERY LISTEN
lol im trying to get there, currently my 2nd listen
It's gonna hit you like a brick.
+ Julius De La Paz dude i felt the same but it's actually fucking amazing after a few listens. This is my favourite shins song now.
I KNOW. How does that even work?!
Yeah. Every The Shins songs like that. It is so weird
That instrumental at the beginning is so addictive
i forgot about this song for like a year... welcome back old friend!
THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL! A true piece of art. WELCOME BACK, best band in the universe!!!
They're back, and better than ever! Thank you for creating magic, James!!
I've had this song, and to a slightly lesser extent this video, inexorably stuck in my head for over a week and a half. I play it at least three times a day, often singing along. James Mercer has such a fantastic voice.
So glad they're back!

So sad the band is not active. Truly amazing and creative songs
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I LIKE SOMETHING THAT UA-cam RECOMMENDS
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSS
When can we expect your remix ?
-hype for the new album-
I don't wanna ruin something so amazing haha
you gotta
No remix pls
your icon is fitting for your comment
This is sneaky one of the best Shins songs. So one of the best songs period.
Didn't like it at first. But it's the Shins so I gave it a few more listens and it really grew on me. So much of their music is like that. The first take has a Meh response, but the more you listen the better it gets.
Jonathan B that's the sign of good music, songs with instant appeal usually get boring after a few listens
that is so so incredibly true most of the time!
Same here, and then later at night it just popped inside my head and wouldn't get out. Now I like it... go figure... My problem initially was that I found the lyrics a tad simplistic...? I can get over that...
Jonathan B this is actually such an accurate description of how I feel about the Shins
Yeah I agree, I reckon its the way James writes and his use of metaphors.
For me it can sometimes take a while to work out the meaning in the songs,
i.e In bed, late at night, silence... BOOM! .

Cant wait to hear the new album.
I bought this album yesterday without even knowing the band, the cover artwork just caught my eye. And yeah, it was a good decision.
Exactly the same here. My eyes seem to know my ears quite well.
The Shins will never make a bad song
Cody McCaskill Am I right!
Cody McCaskill This is usually where you get a bunch of replys from people saying this or that song is bad... but, not with this band
They're incapable of hitting a bad note! So in the pocket all the time....
I bet the music that end up being cut from tapes or right-click emptied from Recycle bins would still sound good.
Aussie fan here, but I really dig Deep Sea Diver, and the Shins...and many others at the moment.
One day they will make a song called "A Bad Song". And you will be wrong.
this song makes me want to drive down the freeway with my windows down. Love this.
Me too ;)
turn on me, is similar song...great band.
Officially my new favorite song! It's been stuck in my head all day, but with The Shins, that's generally a good thing!
I love James' lyrics and this is the best thing I could ever hope for. 2017 is going to FUCKING ROCK!
I'm crying, they are back!!!!
A NEW SHINS SONG!!!
I wanted to be a casual shins fan. But hey. Why not let it consume my soul.
Hope this band feels the love cos the love we all give is impossible to measure. you guys are class. seeing this surprise pop up put a smile on my face.
This years tour- BEST SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN
this often happens with for me with shins music, my fist listen of a song will leave me unimpressed but a few weeks later is my favorite song on the album.
All of their songs are amazing!!!

Added to my list of awesome songs that prove 2017 will get better.
hoy cumplo años y este es el mejor regalo que pueda pedir, los adoro chicos
Accidentally had it playing in two tabs at same time and was appalled at how bad it was. It's actually pretty good though, nice.
NoOneSuspected I hate when that happens.
NoOneSuspected Lmao
lol

Lmfao..I will have to copy cat you and use that sometime. They have been my favorite band since high school but just finally got to see them live last November (almost 10 years later)
So good!, album art is so pretty!
These guys really deserve more publicity. They are a lot more creative than today's music☺
You guys were amazing at Edmonton on the 24th. Absolutely outstanding performance, and give Tennis my compliments.

Very beatley. Nice work!
Can't wait to see you guys in Phoenix. Finally I get to see them live.
It grows on you
I instantly fell in love with The Shins. They remind me soo much of Coldplay and M83
James Mercer deserves an award for the grossest song about love, but really this song is genius in every regard and is morbidly underrated!
This song is awesome!!
it deserves more viewss

Going to their concert in Vancouver tonight. So stoked!!! Welcome back the Shins :D
Underrated music group. Love love love it.

I'm so excited!!!
As with most Shins stuff, this took me a few listens to fall in love with. It's like, "James, what are you doing? Are you really...? Wait... Oh, that doesn't sound toooooo bad... Hm, I could get into this. Shit, this is awesome!"
Man, I thought I was in heaven when I saw this in concert. They killed it!
Such a blessing to be a girl and get this song, lucky hungry one

I have been waiting a long, long time for this. I feel like this could be my summer soundtrack.
This new album is gonna make 2017 a lot better
Lyrics here!
"Name For You"
My girl if you're lucky one day
Rolling down the ancient high street you'll find
In the mirror reflects a woman in her prime
Can you make your way out?
In a world dearly won
Well it's yours love
You can move it around
Given all the drops in the ocean
Better take it one sip at a time
Somebody with an antique notion
Come along to tighten the line
They're just afraid of you speaking your mind
They've got a name for you girls
What's in a name?
They got a name for everything
All of the clothes that you wear
And all of your bits and pieces yeah
You're flipping through the check-stand rags it appears
There ain't no time to waste, you're getting on in years
You can keep your can up
If you just never eat again
It's a means to a terrible end
Even if your plan is successful
Have you really got room in your life?
Yeah and it's a bland kind of torture
You've played the mother and wife
But what do you really dream of at night?
They've got a name for you girls
What's in a name?
They've got a name for you girls
What's in a name?
They got a name for everything
All of the clothes that you wear
And all of your bits and pieces yeah
They've got a name for you girls
Some stupid name
They've got a name for you girls
What's in a name?
What's in a name?
What's in a name?
What's in a name?
What's in a name?
Sounds like a mix of XTC, Crowded House & MGMT, all mashed together in some weird orgy of music
Who else randomly remembered this song?
This is great song.
Nothing like the Prairie Home Companion Bump!!!
Cool, I never would have know. Keep it up
That time you grew up but one of your favorite bands didn't
High notes goals!!
