Your starlit eyes
The afterglow a sign
You’ve set us wandering
So let me ride through night
Til love is everything
Now an age has come out of the loneliness
Your hand in mine
Your hand in mine
The great divide
A stitch in time
Then we recombine
The way it was
Well dust to dust
Has led us here to collide
The blind collective mind of man is all they’re offering
Then you bring a breath of life out of the emptiness
Your hand in mine
Your hand in mine
The great divide
A stitch in time
Then we recombine
The way it was
well dust to dust
Has led us here to collide
Oh love of mine
Bright as the starlight shines
Into the night
Changing our whole lives
You trace the lines through space and time
Until you find they all align
You give to me
A memory
Just a melody
I have to sing

James Mercer is a legend.
Completely agreed.
Kevin Parker, Marcus King, Stu MacKenzie, Nathaniel Rateliff, and James Mercer are this Generations gems.
The only man to have made me cry tears of joy

Don’t you mean “is legend”?
I am floored by how good Mercer's voice is at 49.
happens when you don't smoke and drink like a madmen like most musicians do.
Probably because of that auto tune they added to his voice...
Only so much that auto tune can do dude
@@ragemeister yeap. Gotta still have delivery. But you can hear the touch ups on the really high notes.
@@dontask6863 Nah. He hits those. He uses autotune like the mighty Imogen Heap does,as per my comment a few months back. His octave range and control are as impressive as ever.
The trippy visuals combined with that beautiful voice is perfection.
I miss you so much the shins, welcome again
Man life just played me a cruel trick. I dreamed that I was talking to my brother who has just recently died. In the dream I was with him and my sister was there. We started talking and he asked me if I have seen the show the great divide, or it was possibly the great escape. I realized that he was dead and that he didn't realize it. I asked my sister if she could see him but she just looked at me like I was crazy. So I just hugged him and told him how much I loved him. And then few moments later I woke up and searched for both. Of course something would have that name. Man it's super hard.
Hugs to you..
hey, im sorry i gave you a notification about this by liking your comment ... hope you doing great!!
Sorry friend for your great loss. I know how it is.
Love can bridge any great divide. We carry the ones we love on, to the beyond. Nothing can every tear you apart from the ones you love, so long as you remain yourself.
I'm sorry, man. Love to you.
When I was facing a hard time back in 2017, discovering The Shins made my year way easier to live through and I know I'll always feel this happiness when listening to their songs. You guys can't imagine how much I love you and your work!
Btw what an amazing video!!!!!
The Shins make 2020 a bit better
oh, yeah
Exactly.
🩰🖤🖤🩰 This is what The Never Ending Story would be if Falkor was
Tz
Agreed
Jon Sortland is a creative genius
Amen
Never would’ve thought the shins would drop a song before broken bells finished that album...
This is the Greatest and Best song I have ever heard. It is so good that I cried. Thank you Shins for this little view of heaven.
Whoever did the graphics, congratulations, this is a masterpiece.
Book of revelation
I agree it is a masterpiece 🥰 All glory to God xxxxxxxxx
Absolute Masterpiece.
This song reminds me so much of old YES material, especially Close to the Edge.
Yours is the comment I was looking for. Glad I'm not the only one who thought this sounded like Jon Anderson.
You both are not the only ones! His voice absolutely reminds me of Jon Anderson, and this song reminds me of "Loved By the Sun".
Something makes me yearn for the older shins style, part of me loves to see how it evolved over the years. Regardless, this is a banger.
Just when I think 2020 couldn't get any worse, James makes a song like this, and totally redeems itself.
My favorite band returns them when I need them the most!
I think most of theshins songs are really awesome but with this one everything has been surpassed so far.
I haven't heard such a good song in a long time.
Greetings from Germany
how does this song not have more views?
I'm stunned... kinda speechless
I just discovered this band (?) and please this voice is heaven
I cried a little bit. Thank you.
What a great way to start a Thursday.
Thursday is my Friday, first time hearing the song for me
Thanks for never flinching away from the difficult stuff.
Finally!!! This genuinely makes me feel so much better. I'm so glad they made another song
Tell me why I've been binging every single Shins song and album this week and then coincidentally they decide to release new music 😳
No seriously
December 8, 2020 10:51 pm
If someone asked me at this moment in time to pick my favorite song this would be the one.
what about 9th April, 2021 12:15 am?
@@eyeofcthulhu9602 April 9, 2021 I'm back to my steady stream of Volbeat with a little Sir Sly thrown in although this Shins song always makes my playlist when I'm walking in the morning
Omg sounds like Jon Anderson of Yes what a great voice!!!
holy shit a new shins song
Stone Free do my ears deceive me?
Arclight seriously. Thought we’d be waiting a lot longer. Like maybe 2022
I’m a fierce Shins and Broken Bells fan. Listened to each song over thousands of times. Shaped my life, and then those of my children.
My take on this song (which doesn’t matter) is that I wished that James Mercer had taken it more evenly, and slow. We all know his gift of falsetto, why waste them here, the entire song. Lyrics got lost. Point was made. Cheers y’all

I heard this song on a college radio station a few months ago and I was TRANSFIXED. So many different sounds, vocals, etc., of the bands of my college days in the early '80s. And it's just an incredible song. Love the Mellotron!
Sounds like something off of the Yes. Album Closer to the Edge !!! Awesome vocals like Jon Anderson
Wow! Just....
May god bless you all❤
their best song ever
Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, James Mercer. THAT LEAGUE.
This is exactly what we needed this year.
Just found this. The melody the video @_@ brought shivers from second 10
I'm ready to eat lunch, but i can't stop listening to this song.
Amazing
I love and appreciate the Shins.
The song, divine, the video, phantasmagorical
IS THIS REAL LIFE? THE SHINS ARE BACK?
Just fucking fantastic. Total curveball from the ever surprising James Mercer. Autotune's no bad thing when used like this; see also the always innovative Imogen Heap. The Shins are back, and I,for one, couldn't be happier.
Imogen❤️❤️❤️
i keep playing it, amazing musical experience
Ngl I passed up on this band growing up but this song completely blows me away, incredible
Now playing in Burlington!
Oh how beautiful
Fantastic video.
I just got my first tattoo! "Its Only Life" in cursive on my forearm. Love the shins!!!
It’s only life is def one of my favorite shins songs
İ discovered this song at UA-cam ads.
Fırst time i am happy cause of a youtube ads
Yes, Finally UA-cam is showing good Ads.
Beautiful
So underrated!!
8 years Ago when I heard The Rifle's Spiral That was featured on Nintendo Video, I Totally forgot about it and just a few days Ago I Remembered and I decided to listen to another song (This One) And I'm So glad that I was able to Recover my Childhood.
i was gon type same sht wow.
Thankyou for this song 😎
I just discovered this video thanks to youtube ads. Easily the best ad I've seen this month. Really good music and loved the video.
Nice song. I didn't think the shins were still together. I'm glad
The shins are just James mercer, it really depends on whether he wants to make music again
@@ilikerice5208 I know that, but I really liked the 2012 group.
Oh shit, what a pleasant surprise before bed. 😌
Thank you
The shins!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man, Ive been watching a lot of PBS SpaceTime so now the lyrics really hit different.
Im so happy like i cant explain, the video, the song, the lyrics, the style.... James... you never dissapoint thanks !!!
I AM FALLING IN LOVE WITH THIS BAND
I love this ads
by god its full of stars
The album and tour I have been waiting for......I'm like a pig in shit this morning!
Please when this is all over go on tour in the UK and/or Ireland please
if i played this to myself 10 years ago and said its a Shins song I probably would slap myself in disbelief.
whoa
Become my new Anthem... Greetings from Indonesia...
I just heard this for the first time on the radio and it the beginning sounds JUST like some of the music from the movie Legend. They sound VERY much like Yes and Tangerine Dream.
"Loved By the Sun". Yaaaasss!
I was hesitant after a couple of months trying to like it... and I do, i freaking do.
We were born in the right generation.
That was incredible! loved the heavy synth use! Video was cool, and Mercers vocal range never seizes to impress me!
Learning moment: its ceasss!
this song must have at least 50.000.000 viewers
CANT WAIT 👼
The Shins are back?? I must be dreaming cause this is too good to be true!
James Mercer and the new Shins!
A NEW SONG!!! YES I LOVE IT
Already, once again, in love
Grats 100k , love it the song ♡
I need more please
Omg I love it!!!!!
Waiting for so long for something neeeew, YEEEEEES!
2020 starting to get better. Thanks James
Good new music coming out lately
I love you guys!
Really excited for this new album. Also for people saying that this unoriginal and The Shins "changed": obviously. If you think they're gonna put out the same music from 15 years ago, grow up. You think Sufjan Stevens is gonna make the same banjo music every album? Vampire Weekend is gonna make the same obscure east coast hipster references on afro-inspired tunes? I guess Tyler the Creator should sound just as he did on Bastard and Goblin? Artists are human and go through changes. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it sucks. Maybe you're just a uppity hipster stuck in the 00's.
Sufjan sucks. More boring than Thomas the Train Engine played at half speed.
mookslat That's an opinion, but not a great one. But an opinion nonetheless.
@@mookslat So wrong
Do you like War On Drugs? That's some ambien music as well.
a great track 💥
This song is epic and deserved the grand perspective
Really great 🥰👌🏼👌🏼🙏🏼
Pretty cool.
Ah yes, there's that feeling again
OMG - WOW - So 5D
thanks guys.
Heartworms was a great, I hope this potential upcoming album is also good.
Most people I talk to hated Heartworms....gatekeeper douches...it’s cool that you dig it too!
Heart worms was fun, I mostly agree with the pitchfork sentiment -‘ And although Heartworms never quite conjures the magic of those first couple Shins albums, it’s further proof that they weren’t a fluke’
I love Heartworms. Went to three of their shows when it came out. Best time ever, I will never forget it!
Sarah Brown I only saw one show when heart worms came out. I will not make that mistake this time
@@freeman7079 I also love Heartworms. The problem with The Shins (at least in my opinion) is that their first two albums were nearly perfect. It's impossible to keep that up, but Mercer has come about as close as anyone can.
I stared at it and now everything comes nearer and nearer O.o
Not always the best at adapting to when bands change up their sound or style from album to album. However, The Shins pull it off seamlessly each time.
I enjoy when a band changes things up, as Arctic Monkeys or Black Keys or White Stripes have done in the past. those have felt more seamless to me. when james isn't working with danger mouse, lately his stuff isn't hitting for me. but i'm glad this track is getting a lot of love.
Eh, I'm really not feeling this song at all. I guess that they do a lot of different music, but this just doesn't hit at all for me.
David Bronstein Same dude. I’m trying to listen to it a few times to see if I grow to like it but right now I’m not a fan of this song, even as someone who’s been a fan of just about every single track they ever put out before this (save a couple on heartworms). This doesn’t feel like a sound change up, it feels more like a loss of originality and quality, as much as I hate saying that. Hopefully, if this is a single off an LP, it’s not representative of the LP
jacob m The Shins have not made solid proper music since Wincing The Night Away. This song is devoid of melody, rhythm and originality. Mediocre.
Club Astro Transcendental Motor I know a lot of people don’t like Port of Morrow but I honestly really enjoyed most of that album. It was different, but it still felt original and interesting. Heartworms, much less so. This, not at all.
Holy shit,new music!!!!
It’s nutty that they don’t even have 100k subs
This song is actually genius....i stumbled across this song by accident...or was it? .........Subscribing
new music?? wtf im stoked
just when i was thinking of when y'all would release a new song, damn 😳😳
That's crazy, right?
I love it
