Bob Hargenblatz Lol the entirity of port of morrow is nothing compared to the rest of their music, also some of wincing the night away is quite shit
Wincing The Night Away is their best album, but Port of Morrow is relatively weak
Couple of weak tracks on PoM but September, 40 Mark Strasse, PoM, Rifle's Spiral, It's Only Life are up there with Mercer's finest songs, and most of the rest of it is solid stuff too. September is a magnificent song. It could be a Richard Thompson song from the early 70s, and praise doesn't come any higher than that, in my book.
I'd like to make an argument for 40 Mark Strasse. It's beautiful AND interconnected to the other lyrics on the album. It's not their best, but it's still a hell of good song.
I agree, it's a fantastic song. Must admit it took me a while to get into the album, and I can understand some fans thinking it's a bit too slick and close to AOR in places, but most of the songs are good to excellent and that's all that really matters. Also, I liked the more direct, but still poetic, lyrics. The old Shins lyrics did get a bit close to word salad at times.
I'm 81 years old and love this band the shins. I'm just a little scared I'll never get to see their 6th studio album. If they keep the trend of releasing an album every 4 or 5 years

Heartworms is a 10/10 album, how could it not be viral or have more visualizations?
For real it’s so underrated, given how terrible some of the generic stuff that blows to today is it’s shocking to me it isn’t huge.
I just realized this is a sequel to the Simple Song music video because James Mercer is dead in that one and it shows his grave at the beginning of this one.

i think port is their best and most creative from end to end. rifles spiral, simple song, title track, 40 mark strauss, its only life, taken for a fool, no way down, and bait and switch are all amazing. janet weiss kills it too. every album gets better. a rare phenomenon in modern music

The Gloating Sun & Nature Bears a Vaccum would be near the top if they were a bit longer. When You Leave Here It's Time to Return has a great gritty low-fi Guided by Voices feel to it and I love it even if it's not all that Shinsy

This song is genius. Listen how Mercer adds a scale of 3 to 5 notes and syllables at the end of every verse to brighten up the musicality. "weird angles coming over THE WIRE" or "down my nose to the fish IN THE BARRELS". I also love how he plays with the tone at the end of the part that goes "wash the blood and the guts TO the OCEan".

I was really underwhelmed by the majority of Port of Morrow but I've listened to this song so many times and I love it so much, it's a throwback to the Oh, Inverted World days. The other singles released so far sound good too, but this is so fucking great.
On my third listen and I'm imagining the live version. The one where they magically make the song a lot better than it already is.

Que clipe sensacional. Eu estava esperando uma música nova do Shins desde a fabulosa So Now What. Assumo que esse seja o presságio de um disco novo vindo por aí. Em meio a tantas bandinhas genéricas que tem surgido nos últimos tempos, é seguro afirmar que o James Mercer continua sendo o melhor compositor do indie rock em atividade atualmente. O talento do cara é inquestionável e indiscutível. Espero que o Shins lance um disco tão bom quanto foi o Port Of Morrow.
