I like that you’re being honest about vegan foods. Especially with the cheese. There’s too many people out there lying about how amazing vegan cheese is. I don’t even bother with it anymore because it just makes me wish I was eating cheese lol.

Daiya works on a pizza. But it's not as good as real cheese. But there is hope. The person who runs the Instagram for Perfect Day Foods (the company that makes the cultured whey used by Brave Robot) told me that they are working on cheese. Vegan rennet was approved by the FDA in the 90s. 90 some odd percent of cheese made in the US uses vegan rennet. If Perfect day can make a vegan dairy mozzarella; that will be a game changer. A pizza place can switch and regular customers wouldn't know any different. But vegan customers who don't have dairy allergies could now have real cheese. I am excited.

The best vegan pizza I've had was the vegan flatbread from Seasons 52. It's a restaurant chain. They are on their vegan menu but basically all it is to be vegan is they don't put any cheese on it. But I'm telling you, you'd never ever miss the cheese. It's a flatbread and there's hardly anything on it but it tastes like a pizza. So simple and so good.

Have you tried simmering that marinara with some oil for a while? It might still be more convenient if you just have to start simmering first (while the pasta water heats up) with a couple other things like oil and soysauce to balance it out. Are the ingredients that different from the old one?

    • @lavendercoldbrew
      @lavendercoldbrew 2 роки тому +2

The organic marinara has no added sugar so that is probably why it tastes really different. I really like the organic one, but I prefer a very not-sweet marinara. Simmering with some wine, extra garlic, and red pepper flakes helps deepen the flavor (or just stir in some of the bomba sauce for a quick fix).

I actually really like the organic tomato basil marinara! I prefer my marinara not sweetened at all though (I know that's not traditional, it's just a personal preference), so I see how it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. For people that like a more acidic/savory, not sweet marinara, the Organic is worth a try. For people that prefer a traditional marinara with some sweetness (but not as sweet as some brands), stick with the regular.
Also the organic one comes in a handy Mason jar with measurements on the side so you can repurpose it as a measuring cup or make cold brew or vinaigrette in it and see the ratios. That's the only reason I even tried the organic sauce instead of the conventional, lol.

Before I went vegan (1 year ago, decision made while watching a UV video) I ate a lenten pizza in Bosnia (the Orthodox don't eat meat or dairy during Lent, but they don't count fish as meat). It had tuna and fake cheese on it. Now, tuna isn't needed at all to make a tasty pizza. There are loads of vegan toppings that go on pizza, but an okay cheese is usually needed. That pizza was very good. I have no idea how they made it, but it didn't feel dairy-free. Don't know how they made it. I ate another one from another place and it was hideous. The cheese was like plastic wrap covering the surface. Well, well. Now I'm in Croatia and there is no fake cheese here. I make vegan "cheese sauce" sometimes and it works like melted cheese on the vegan version of the Korean warm cabbage sandwich (go find the channel cookingshooking, scroll to the sandwiches and replace the cheese and butter with vegan alternatives - so good!) and on burgers, but it wouldn't work on pizza.

Not really into cooking, so I’ll try any vegan prefab products I find, junky or not. Except the ones meant to simulate seafood. Hated real seafood as a child, don’t want to even try vegan versions. I like algae products such as seaweed, but that as far as I go.
Vegan ice cream nowadays is often really good. I’ve tried various brands based on almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, oat milk, sunflower seed milk. Most are too pricey, though.
Decades ago all we had was that awful Rice Dream stuff claiming to be a frozen dessert and then later the not quite so awful Tofutti (their wild berry was decent, and also their mini ice cream sandwiches). I found a wonderful vegan fudgesicle (Turtle Mountain maybe?) back in those days that I’ve never found again for decades. It was based on pea protein, I think, before pea protein became a fad.
I can eat butter (dairy allergy not triggered) so I have recent memories of it, but really much prefer the plant butters by Country Crock and Flora. Kroger’s has both. Country Crock has 3 versions with a different 3rd oil in the three-oil blend (almond oil, olive oil, or avocado oil, the other two oils are sustainably harvested palm oil and canola oil) and they are all good and relatively cheap and available in sticks. Can freeze and slice it as needed. Also Nutiva’s buttery flavored coconut oil is quite good - the flavor comes from the same butyrate chemical compound that gives butter its characteristic flavor, but from a plant source.
There are a lot of good vegan protein sources in patty and sausage form nowadays as well as good deli slices. I just try those as I see them. Dr. Praeger’s makes really good high protein patties (I like the All-American one and the Turk’y in the Perfect Burger line best, although the one labeled just Perfect Burger is also good) and chicken-like nuggets that are gluten free and soy-free as well as vegan. Hilary’s has some good gluten-free/soy-free patties as well, I like the black bean one and cauliflower one (about 8g of protein each, I think) but others are lower protein and more of an acquired taste. Sol and Vianna have good products in various forms.
There are a lot of bacon-tasting type vegan products, always worth a try. I especially like Louisville Vegan’s line of jerkies, which includes maple bacon flavor. They are soft pieces and can easily be cut up for casseroles or sandwiches in addition to just eating out of the bag. Not cheap, but quite good.
Morningstar Farms products are becoming veganized - they do rely on wheat and soy mostly, but they taste pretty good. Their quarter pounders are great but harder for me to find - the plain meat lover’s one is highest in protein, but their cheezeburger is really good although haven’t seen it in a while. Not fond of the veggie lover’s one in that line. But their chicken-like nuggets and tenders (including the new Incogmeato line) and patties are good, and the corn dogs likewise. Need my junky protein, please. Boca makes good patties, including breaded chicken-like ones.
The Simple Truth line at Kroger’s is worth trying. Their vegan cream cheese is good, likewise their vegan cheddar cheese slices are actually better than even the improved Daiya. I do like the Daiya American cheese type and the Follow Your Heart vegan sliced cheeses, especially the Smoked Gouda or Provolone. The original Daiya cheese slices and shreds were just awful. Their cheddar is now better but Simple Truth is tastier and cheaper. I do still like the Daiya American cheese. Field Roast’s Chao vegan cheese is wonderful, even straight out of the package, but so pricey and hard to get. Miyoko is way out of my budget range except on deep discount.
Simple Truth has good vegan deli slices but I prefer the Tofurky line of slices and brats. There are a lot of good vegan deli slices now but they are just too expensive.
Garden Inspirations (made by Farm Rich), available at Kroger’s, has some quite good vegan meatballs. Gardein is generally pretty good but depends on your taste. If you never liked the meat version, you probably won’t like the vegan version... I like some of the Alpha products but the price is pretty high for the nutritional value. Sweet Earth is a mixed bag, guess it depends on your tastes.
I’m not a big chocolate fan (my brother always ate it up before I could get much of it) but the Go Max Go line of vegan homages to popular chocolate bars is great. I especially like their Jokerz bar, homage to Snickers.

I don't like the kind ice cream (I didn't have it, because it looks bad). I like the chickpea ice cream they have: the sweetpea triple chocolate's the best - you gotta try it. If you like pistachio, go for sorbabes.
