I've never had the chance to try it ... I would in a heartbeat 🖤 I live in Amarillo Texas and so many authentic foods are not available to us ... When I do get to try different food's, I take them 🖤 we have a small hole in the wall place that is authentic Indian food and it is so delish ☺️
Bolani is just like Aloo Paratha which means Flatbread stuffed with boiled spiced potato filling. It is a very common breakfast food in the Northern part of India. Afghani food is really similar to Indian food in terms of cooking and the spices used. The way Brinjal is eaten is kinda like Begun Bajha which is eaten as side with dal rice in Bengal. Kitchri is our comfort food.
I am german and work in a childrens home. We got two boys from Afghanistan and i made these recepies for the boys. It was so emotional they thanked me so many times and while eating they had tears in their eyes. Thank you for sharing this ❤❤

Pakistani here, already love your Afghan recipes!! I believe Afghanistan is truly a hidden "Gem" of this world, exploited by all countries and in the end only people suffered. I totally agree. I don't think it's inappropriate here to say that other countries throughout all of history just couldn't/cannot seem to leave Afghanistan alone. Constantly being invaded, constant interference from other countries who just cannot leave them alone. No country in all of human history has ever invaded and won a war in Afghanistan. They lose every single time but still keep trying to start rucks for the dodgiest of reasons. Leave 'em alone-- you'll NEVER EVER defeat them. I'll never understand it and certainly never respect it. ✌✌✌
While I do pray for the people of Afghanistan, they are one of two countries that can truly say that they have never been exploited by others (the other is Ethiopia). Sadly, though this means that they have few excuses for their situation. They have made their own bed and now they must lie in it.

This is such an interesting video. I have never tasted Afghan food, never heard the language spoken and I am ashamed to say that I don’t know much about the Afghan culture other than the problems that this country has, which seems to be the only thing the media reports about. The food seems absolutely delicious and seeing your lovely parents on video goes to show what amazing people Afghanis are. I hope and pray that the country goes back to what it once was and that there is no more suffering and yes, if I am lucky enough to meet any refugees from this wonderful country, I will welcome them with an open heart!

@@jamalasiddiqi5968 That is so sad. Those people have never been stationed there. I have been hearing so many stories from my friends that served in the armed forces about how kind and welcoming the Afghan people are. I will not forget this and will welcome them with open arms.
I really, really loved your last comment, about being able to tell an Afghan immigrant that I cooked some of their food. I live in Central Italy in the region where these days about 1300 people from Afghanistan were brought to for their quarantine, they will later be brought to smaller towns or villages (people are offering to host them), so chances that I'll meet someone are quite high. I'll definitely try out some of your delicious recipes! Myself I immigrated from another European country to Italy, and I understand how good it feels when someone appreciates what is typical from your country of origin.
I also moved to Central Italy! (from London) My mum emigrated to the UK from Iran in 1950 and hearing Farsi spoken always reminds me of family gatherings. So now I'm an immigrant myself! Haven't come across any Afghanis here yet but I'll be glad to see them!

The more nationalities we have living here, the wider the variety of food that supermarkets sell! We often used to go to Vasto, Pescara and Silvi Marina in Abruzzo! Where are you?
I’m a secondary school teacher. In my class there are afghan girls and boys who started a new life in Germany,who work exceptionally hard to achieve their goals in life and go places. I'm from Iran and also live in BC, like your family. With everything that's going on in Iran and Afghanistan right now, my heart is broken into pieces. I made your Aushak recipe for a friends get together and it was absolutely delicious. I thought there would be leftovers but they disappeared within minutes. I served it with salata (or the very similar Shirazi version I usually make). As a fellow speaker of farsi/dari, the parts where you're talking to your parents are my absolute favourite. It warmed up my heart so much. And the last part made me tear up. I just wanted to say, we haven't forgotten Afghanistan and its beautiful people. Love and solidarity to you and your family. Growing up my best friend was a refugee from Afghanistan. Her parents moved here to the US in the early 80's not only for themselves but for their daughter (who is now in her 40's). My fondest memories of her and her family is the TREMENDOUS hospitality they always showed me and the BEST food. My mother couldn't cook and I was a chunky kid who loved to eat so I found my way to their house more than I probably should have LOL. The flavors, the aroma, using bread as our "utensils", the large shared platters of food as we sat on the floor eating and talking (I even picked up a few words in Farsi). What a wonderful memory...the Bolani recipe made me want to cry because I remember her making that for us. Thank you for this video! It really sparked wonderful memories (like her mother trying to teach me how to cook but she only knew how to say the ingredients in Farsi so I had no clue what she was saying-but we worked it out LOLOLOL). I still make a Kachaloo Burani (I hope I spelled that right) dish she taught me. Oh my goodness-my heart just broke when I saw what happened in Afghanistan because the people I know from there are such beautiful people with a rich culture and such big hearts. I'll definitely check out the organizations mentioned. I feel so helpless but I'll do what I can. Thank you again-looking forward to trying these plant-based recipes.

That is so precious. I think this video is so inspiring for us to really capture the authenticity in the cooking of our older generations. I would love to see authentic Mexican cooking, not just the fajitas on my supermarket shelves! I have started to build a time capsule of the recipes my mum cooks, we grew up with her cooking, and I am capturing it for generations to come and to share with the world! It’s so important.
This almost made me cry. So beautiful. Cannot imagine how I would feel if my country of origin was destroyed even though I only lived there for 4 yrs of my life, it's still my heritage. This is so beautiful and telling that Afghanistan is more than just Taliban and war. It's a beautiful country with a rich history, culture and food. Wish to know more. The Afghan people have been through a lot. But I'll say this. The US does not give one crap about the Afghans. If they did they would never have murdered thousands of innocent Afghan men, women and children back during Obama's and trump's leadership. So don't believe what CNN or BBC news tells you.

Watched all the ads, sharing on social media. My husband grew up in a war-torn country and his parents remained long after he immigrated. To worry from afar is its own agony; to be in it is so much worse. Love to you and your family and all those they worry about. Also I recognized the word for garlic because it’s similar to Arabic 😃 The dishes look amazing!
30 years ago I was working with an Afghan girl who also worked at an Afghan restaurant at night. She kept urging me to come in and try Afghan food and I kept resisting. Finally, I went in, sat down, and was absolutely blown away by how amazingly good the food was. I've been going to Afghan restaurants ever since. It is by FAR my favorite kind of food.

As an Iranian my heart aches from the sorrow that has been brought upon the lovely Afghan people. I so wish for a day when our now-divided cultures and countries unite again and our civilization rises up again and the world gets to see that we are as rich in culture and literature and history as our hearts are in warmth.
As an Indian, it's interesting to see the likeness of Afghan dishes to some dishes we have here in India, especially the mix of spices we use. The food looks real good!

With all the news that have been coming from Afghanistan lately, I often think of you and how lucky in some ways that you are, that you have been able to live the life you do, and how I wish for all Afghani women and girls that they would have a similar freedom to do what they want and not what is determined for them by others. Apart from that, the food looks delicious, I love Chinese dumplings so will definitely give yours a try.
Beyooooond lucky, and it's something my sisters and cousins discuss quite often. Our parents sacrificed a lot for us, and I'm forever grateful. And grateful to the countries that offered them safe passage.

Somehow I feel so happy that, growing in Canada, you still care so much about your motherland, you are fluent in your language. It’s so important... By the way, many dishes or even ways of preparing them resemble Ukrainian dishes so much. There is indeed a lot in common between our cultures. I do hope it turns better for Afghanistan eventually.
Keeping the language and the food is such a blessing to hold on to for generations to come. I grew up in England, my parents are from Pakistan, but I am teaching my daughter the mother tongue language. I have also convinced my camera shy mother to allow me to record her authentic cooking for generations to come. A time capsule of what I ate growing up.

Love your presentation. I am Persian/Pakistani living in Canada. I understand Dari and love Afghani cuisine - It is a good balance between the spicy food of Pakistan and the savoury dishes of Iran. I am familiar with all the dishes you presented but I loved your parents most (they are in my age group, perhaps a little younger). God Bless them and keep them in good health. I've been waiting for a video like this and didn't even actively know it. I've been wanting to cook my mom's afghan dishes for years but other than eggplants and green beans I've never dared to try and copy her cooking. Especially since I don't usually cook with meat - I'm not vegan, but love exploring vegan recipes and substituting my regular repertoire with vegan ingredients. So thank you so much for bringing our culture closer to people that don't know it well, and to those that do. With everything that's been going on, it feels especially great to hear Afghan words and see the dishes of my culture on here ❤️❤️❤️ I'm halfway through the Aushak recipe and already I'm almost crying. I took for granted that the food was always just there for me to eat and enjoy, and so never put in the effort to learn it for myself. It's also hard when they always say, "ah just add however much spice you want." Haha they don't understand that for a newbie (me) to the cuisine, I need to know the measurements of these things, otherwise I don't know if I should be adding 1/2 a tsp of turmeric or 2 Tbsp of turmeric 😂 anyway, glad you enjoyed it, and maybe you can make some for your mum and surprise her 🤓💕
@@PickUpLimes it's been exactly the same for me when I moved away, my friends are still laughing at my first sad attempt of making Qabuli Palao 🙈 and I completely understand - when I ask my mom how long to boil the rice for before steaming, she'll say "cook it until you can take a grain between your fingers, press, and still feel a bit of a hard core" 😅 however, this video inspired me to try again more actively to learn some more Afghan dishes ❤️

Wow! it was just amazing. I had Bolani and Ghabeli Polo in Iran made by Afghanistani refugees and it was incredible. You're completely right. Nothing can relate us better than food. Like when Shiraz was related to Afghanistan by that salad you call Salate and we call Salald-e-Shirazi.

I used to work at a refugee house, and when I started, there were some lovely Afghan families who didn't have the chance to bring any personal items before fleeing but they would always share their food with everyone and be the kindest warm-hearted people I've ever met, big love for this video 🤎

It is a sad and stupid pattern propagated primarily through religious sectarianism, and exacerbated by financial difficulties of the people, which limits trade and free travel to allow openness and friendship through familiarization with our neighbouring brothers and sisters. The foreign military interventions haven't really helped, and only ruined the region even further.I think that if we consider all the different tribes of irani and anfaghinstani people, the shared language and culture brings them together.Yet the other factors, such as the tragedies leading many afghanistanis to flee to iran, the internal turmoil in afghanistan that made it difficult for iranians to visit afghanistan, and financial troubles on both sides, have left these two countries, which used to be one country for most of their histories, with sad and fearful feelings towards each other. We must fight this trend and spread the love that must exist between us, so that perhaps one day soon our people can view each other as our own famiy.

Besides, I have witnessed how individuals hate individuals, how some turks hate kurds, how some sunnis hate shiites, how some iranians hate afghanistanis, and so on. It is a shame that they do, and it is a shame that the governments and politicians also use this hate to further their own agendas, but hopefully some day soon, this land will be free from bigots and haters. also, I have seen the exact opposite too, some turks loving kurds, some sunnis loving shiites, some iranians loving afghanistanis, and so on. Still, one hater can ruin a community because hate is such a contagious feeling.
I really loved it, as an Iranian who shares a language and culture with Afghan people, it really breaks my heart to know that in my country people are racist towards them and abuse them into working more and pay them less. I wish things change in Afghanistan ❤️
Racism is very haram as well and has no place in islam. Thankfully whenever I visited Pakistan, where my parents are from, I never experienced any racism or discrimination towards any people, and they even have millions of afghan refugees living there now. I just think Iran is very nationalistic, which is something you should always avoid.
Why you only focus on the few bad ones? How about the kind iranians who welcomed "millions" of afghans when they already have lots of problems themselves?and even the racist people had bad exprience they didn't become like that for fun.. Afghans do have their bad side inside iran..they commited lots of crimes..which is what you never talk about? this is all very one sided and unfair..making the iranian the bad ones here..why you enjoy being sooo unfair to your own people?? If anything remotely simmilar happened to iran and they went to afghanistan how do you think they had welcomed us? They wouldn't.

Ahhhh! This was SO REFRESHING for me to see. My brother-in-law and his family became refugees from Afghanistan when he just 15! Since he became apart of my family, we’ve been cooking these exact same foods and now it’s by far my favorite type of cuisine!
I am actually crying right know. I am thinking of the afghan people every day - especially the children, the women. Thank you for showing the recipes. I want to cook all of them. What a delicious bridge to culture and conversations!

Well, Sadia, you've gone and made me cry in a public library! Joking aside, this was truly a beautiful video. I loved hearing you talk with your family, sharing recipes and memories. I was able to purchase groceries for an Afghan refugee family in my city a few months ago through a local organization. The organization provided me with the grocery list and I can now see why some of the foods I bought were on the list! I look forward to cooking and trying this food for myself - it looks absolutely delicious!
My mum ( french ) fall in love with Afghanistan after 09/11 . She discorvered the country and the people due to bad circumstances but always dreamed that one day she will be able to see the beautiful panjshir valley . I'm going to make her those dishes , little taste of afghanistan at home .

Tip from someone that frequently uses the wonton/dumpling wrappers: Some of the wonton wrappers contain egg, so if you are vegan or allergic (like we are), just make sure to check. Most are accidentally vegan though, so it should not be difficult to find another brand right next to it that works. Some stores (formerly cash n’ carry) only carried the egg ones, but the Asian markets (like she mentioned) have a variety.

I've never had the chance to try it ... I would in a heartbeat 🖤 I live in Amarillo Texas and so many authentic foods are not available to us ... When I do get to try different food's, I take them 🖤 we have a small hole in the wall place that is authentic Indian food and it is so delish ☺️
Bolani is just like Aloo Paratha which means Flatbread stuffed with boiled spiced potato filling. It is a very common breakfast food in the Northern part of India. Afghani food is really similar to Indian food in terms of cooking and the spices used. The way Brinjal is eaten is kinda like Begun Bajha which is eaten as side with dal rice in Bengal. Kitchri is our comfort food.
I live in Scotland so the most exotic food I’ve tried is probably curries or spring rolls. Will defo try some time though 💜

I totally agree. I don't think it's inappropriate here to say that other countries throughout all of history just couldn't/cannot seem to leave Afghanistan alone. Constantly being invaded, constant interference from other countries who just cannot leave them alone. No country in all of human history has ever invaded and won a war in Afghanistan. They lose every single time but still keep trying to start rucks for the dodgiest of reasons. Leave 'em alone-- you'll NEVER EVER defeat them. I'll never understand it and certainly never respect it. ✌✌✌
While I do pray for the people of Afghanistan, they are one of two countries that can truly say that they have never been exploited by others (the other is Ethiopia).
Sadly, though this means that they have few excuses for their situation. They have made their own bed and now they must lie in it.

This is such an interesting video. I have never tasted Afghan food, never heard the language spoken and I am ashamed to say that I don’t know much about the Afghan culture other than the problems that this country has, which seems to be the only thing the media reports about. The food seems absolutely delicious and seeing your lovely parents on video goes to show what amazing people Afghanis are. I hope and pray that the country goes back to what it once was and that there is no more suffering and yes, if I am lucky enough to meet any refugees from this wonderful country, I will welcome them with an open heart!

I really, really loved your last comment, about being able to tell an Afghan immigrant that I cooked some of their food. I live in Central Italy in the region where these days about 1300 people from Afghanistan were brought to for their quarantine, they will later be brought to smaller towns or villages (people are offering to host them), so chances that I'll meet someone are quite high. I'll definitely try out some of your delicious recipes! Myself I immigrated from another European country to Italy, and I understand how good it feels when someone appreciates what is typical from your country of origin.
Afghan food is amazing! A family that moved to my area about 20 years ago opened a restaurant and it's delicious! They are wonderful kind people too!

The more nationalities we have living here, the wider the variety of food that supermarkets sell! We often used to go to Vasto, Pescara and Silvi Marina in Abruzzo! Where are you?

I made your Aushak recipe for a friends get together and it was absolutely delicious. I thought there would be leftovers but they disappeared within minutes. I served it with salata (or the very similar Shirazi version I usually make). As a fellow speaker of farsi/dari, the parts where you're talking to your parents are my absolute favourite. Growing up my best friend was a refugee from Afghanistan. Her parents moved here to the US in the early 80's not only for themselves but for their daughter (who is now in her 40's). My fondest memories of her and her family is the TREMENDOUS hospitality they always showed me and the BEST food. My mother couldn't cook and I was a chunky kid who loved to eat so I found my way to their house more than I probably should have LOL. The flavors, the aroma, using bread as our "utensils", the large shared platters of food as we sat on the floor eating and talking (I even picked up a few words in Farsi). What a wonderful memory...the Bolani recipe made me want to cry because I remember her making that for us. Thank you for this video! It really sparked wonderful memories (like her mother trying to teach me how to cook but she only knew how to say the ingredients in Farsi so I had no clue what she was saying-but we worked it out LOLOLOL). I still make a Kachaloo Burani (I hope I spelled that right) dish she taught me. Oh my goodness-my heart just broke when I saw what happened in Afghanistan because the people I know from there are such beautiful people with a rich culture and such big hearts. I'll definitely check out the organizations mentioned. I feel so helpless but I'll do what I can. Thank you again-looking forward to trying these plant-based recipes.

That is so precious. I think this video is so inspiring for us to really capture the authenticity in the cooking of our older generations. I would love to see authentic Mexican cooking, not just the fajitas on my supermarket shelves! I have started to build a time capsule of the recipes my mum cooks, we grew up with her cooking, and I am capturing it for generations to come and to share with the world! It’s so important.

30 years ago I was working with an Afghan girl who also worked at an Afghan restaurant at night. She kept urging me to come in and try Afghan food and I kept resisting. Finally, I went in, sat down, and was absolutely blown away by how amazingly good the food was. I've been going to Afghan restaurants ever since. It is by FAR my favorite kind of food.

With all the news that have been coming from Afghanistan lately, I often think of you and how lucky in some ways that you are, that you have been able to live the life you do, and how I wish for all Afghani women and girls that they would have a similar freedom to do what they want and not what is determined for them by others. Apart from that, the food looks delicious, I love Chinese dumplings so will definitely give yours a try.

Somehow I feel so happy that, growing in Canada, you still care so much about your motherland, you are fluent in your language. It’s so important... By the way, many dishes or even ways of preparing them resemble Ukrainian dishes so much. There is indeed a lot in common between our cultures. I do hope it turns better for Afghanistan eventually.
Keeping the language and the food is such a blessing to hold on to for generations to come. I grew up in England, my parents are from Pakistan, but I am teaching my daughter the mother tongue language. I have also convinced my camera shy mother to allow me to record her authentic cooking for generations to come. A time capsule of what I ate growing up.

As an Afghan this video made me really emotional. I can remember how when l was really young my dad used to cook me Bolani every weekend but after he died l forgot the name of the dish and he never wrote the recipe. But know thanks to you l know the name and the recipe. Thank you

Love your presentation. I am Persian/Pakistani living in Canada. I understand Dari and love Afghani cuisine - It is a good balance between the spicy food of Pakistan and the savoury dishes of Iran. I am familiar with all the dishes you presented but I loved your parents most (they are in my age group, perhaps a little younger). God Bless them and keep them in good health. Your expression was priceless when during the chutney bit you said “shookhi mi konid? ‘! I will check out your donation site. It is money well directed to the brave people of Afghanistan.

I've been waiting for a video like this and didn't even actively know it. I've been wanting to cook my mom's afghan dishes for years but other than eggplants and green beans I've never dared to try and copy her cooking. Especially since I don't usually cook with meat - I'm not vegan, but love exploring vegan recipes and substituting my regular repertoire with vegan ingredients. So thank you so much for bringing our culture closer to people that don't know it well, and to those that do. With everything that's been going on, it feels especially great to hear Afghan words and see the dishes of my culture on here ❤️❤️❤️

I took for granted that the food was always just there for me to eat and enjoy, and so never put in the effort to learn it for myself. It's also hard when they always say, "ah just add however much spice you want." Haha they don't understand that for a newbie (me) to the cuisine, I need to know the measurements of these things, otherwise I don't know if I should be adding 1/2 a tsp of turmeric or 2 Tbsp of turmeric 😂 anyway, glad you enjoyed it, and maybe you can make some for your mum and surprise her 🤓💕
@@PickUpLimes it's been exactly the same for me when I moved away, my friends are still laughing at my first sad attempt of making Qabuli Palao 🙈 and I completely understand - when I ask my mom how long to boil the rice for before steaming, she'll say "cook it until you can take a grain between your fingers, press, and still feel a bit of a hard core" 😅 however, this video inspired me to try again more actively to learn some more Afghan dishes ❤️

Afghans are good people. (We Indians have to know that since we shared heritage with them centuries ago - read up about Gandhara). They have unfortunately become pawns in the hands of nefarious forces.
Wow! it was just amazing. I had Bolani and Ghabeli Polo in Iran made by Afghanistani refugees and it was incredible. You're completely right. Nothing can relate us better than food. Like when Shiraz was related to Afghanistan by that salad you call Salate and we call Salald-e-Shirazi.

I used to work at a refugee house, and when I started, there were some lovely Afghan families who didn't have the chance to bring any personal items before fleeing but they would always share their food with everyone and be the kindest warm-hearted people I've ever met, big love for this video 🤎

It is a sad and stupid pattern propagated primarily through religious sectarianism, and exacerbated by financial difficulties of the people, which limits trade and free travel to allow openness and friendship through familiarization with our neighbouring brothers and sisters. The foreign military interventions haven't really helped, and only ruined the region even further.I think that if we consider all the different tribes of irani and anfaghinstani people, the shared language and culture brings them together.Yet the other factors, such as the tragedies leading many afghanistanis to flee to iran, the internal turmoil in afghanistan that made it difficult for iranians to visit afghanistan, and financial troubles on both sides, have left these two countries, which used to be one country for most of their histories, with sad and fearful feelings towards each other. We must fight this trend and spread the love that must exist between us, so that perhaps one day soon our people can view each other as our own famiy.

Besides, I have witnessed how individuals hate individuals, how some turks hate kurds, how some sunnis hate shiites, how some iranians hate afghanistanis, and so on. It is a shame that they do, and it is a shame that the governments and politicians also use this hate to further their own agendas, but hopefully some day soon, this land will be free from bigots and haters.
also, I have seen the exact opposite too, some turks loving kurds, some sunnis loving shiites, some iranians loving afghanistanis, and so on. Still, one hater can ruin a community because hate is such a contagious feeling.

Racism is very haram as well and has no place in islam. Thankfully whenever I visited Pakistan, where my parents are from, I never experienced any racism or discrimination towards any people, and they even have millions of afghan refugees living there now. I just think Iran is very nationalistic, which is something you should always avoid.
Why you only focus on the few bad ones? How about the kind iranians who welcomed "millions" of afghans when they already have lots of problems themselves?and even the racist people had bad exprience they didn't become like that for fun.. Afghans do have their bad side inside iran..they commited lots of crimes..which is what you never talk about? this is all very one sided and unfair..making the iranian the bad ones here..why you enjoy being sooo unfair to your own people?? If anything remotely simmilar happened to iran and they went to afghanistan how do you think they had welcomed us? They wouldn't.
My heart goes out to all the afghan people, food is a great way to share and learn new cultures and perhaps make the gaps and fears of the things not known becomes smaller. You contribute to this with your amazing videos, thank you for sharing ❤️

Ahhhh! This was SO REFRESHING for me to see. My brother-in-law and his family became refugees from Afghanistan when he just 15! Since he became apart of my family, we’ve been cooking these exact same foods and now it’s by far my favorite type of cuisine!

Well, Sadia, you've gone and made me cry in a public library! Joking aside, this was truly a beautiful video. I loved hearing you talk with your family, sharing recipes and memories. I was able to purchase groceries for an Afghan refugee family in my city a few months ago through a local organization. The organization provided me with the grocery list and I can now see why some of the foods I bought were on the list! I look forward to cooking and trying this food for myself - it looks absolutely delicious!
My mum ( french ) fall in love with Afghanistan after 09/11 . She discorvered the country and the people due to bad circumstances but always dreamed that one day she will be able to see the beautiful panjshir valley .

Tip from someone that frequently uses the wonton/dumpling wrappers: Some of the wonton wrappers contain egg, so if you are vegan or allergic (like we are), just make sure to check. Most are accidentally vegan though, so it should not be difficult to find another brand right next to it that works. Some stores (formerly cash n’ carry) only carried the egg ones, but the Asian markets (like she mentioned) have a variety.
Nagoya wonton wraps are vegan! :)
Do you happen to know if wonton wraps are gluten free?
It might be possible to find them GF, but the ones typically found in stores contain wheat. You might be able to order some?
