    Edit: water valve may leak! Dump in a bucket of water to cause flush without refill!
    Original post: If you turn off the water intake valve behind the toilet before your initial flush you won’t have the water come up to the stain line. This will also prevent the need to plunge, which didn’t really lower the water level anyway. Just turn it back on when you’re done scrubbing.

    About forty years ago, while working as housekeeper in a nursing home, I was taught to always flush first, then use a Johnny mop to gently and quickly plunge and lower the water level in the toilet so I could effectively apply a measured amount of bowl cleaner, let that sit and work on any stains while I removed bathroom trash, replaced toilet paper/ towels, cleaned/disinfected the sink and mirror, then the outside/back/ sides of the toilet, then back to cleaning the actual toilet bowl, flush one more and boom, I was done except for sweeping and mopping the floor on my way out. Cleaned some very explosively soiled toilets and bathrooms in my day🙃. We used soft nylon long handled brushes on any stubborn residues. I used to clean about thirty rooms and toilets every single morning. I am still picky about keeping my own bathroom tidy😊

      By putting the Johnny mop in the dirty, soiled toilet ( to use as a plunger to lower the water level), if you then later used that same mop to mop the floors you were smearing poop around on the floors. This is very unsanitary. Mops that are going to be used to mop the floors shouldn’t be used in toilets whether they are soiled or not.

    Vinegar soaked tissues tucked up under the lip will also remove minerals and bacteria. Leave it for at least an hour or overnight and then you can flush. There are skinny long handled cleaning brushes that work very well under the lip. After flushing the vinegar tissue away you can brush and it's amazing how much mildew and rust flow away.

    Barkeeper's friend is a good product, I'll use a little bit of comet first to clean the germs, and then follow it up with the pumice stone. I get them at home Depot (use the one that's got a finer grit). Wear a pair of rubber gloves while cleaning. I do that about once a month and it keeps the toilet ring free. I think the pumice stone is better for the environment too.

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Рік тому +6

      The pumice stone does work - that is true, and you need a very gentle touch when using one. For this reason, we don't allow our professional cleaners to use it, because they are usually barreling through a house at maximum efficiency speed. Too much pressure scrubbing a pumice stone (which is in fact a stone) against a porcelain coating can scratch the coating right off the inside bowl of the toilet leaving the ring area bare ceramic. The next time anyone uses a liquid bowl cleaner it permanently stains the toilet ring area (blueish).

    • @genxx2724
      @genxx2724 Рік тому

      I doubt any homeowner would agree to your using a pumice stone on their toilet. I had a housecleaner for a short time, and told her to use only my cleaning products, cloths, etc. She scratched my bathtub faucet and I couldn’t fathom how. Well, I found a small piece of steel wool she brought and stashed in my laundry closet. This is exactly what I was trying to avoid. I didn’t want anything abrasive used in my home.

  • @1Melody1963
    @1Melody1963 Рік тому +2

    Personally I have never had good success with Bar Keepers Friend removing stains. It is a good surfactant, meaning it removes soil, but not stains. No matter how hard I scrub, or how long I let it set. Or how many repeat applications. I have high mineral water, and the toilet rings are almost ever present. Pumice will take it off, as will a scotch brite pad (the green one-NOT the sponge.) But pumice also etches the finish so makes stain removal harder in the future. So what am I doing wrong?

    • @AskAngelaBrown
      @AskAngelaBrown  Рік тому +3

      There are a few things that could be contributing to your difficulty in removing stains with Bar Keepers Friend. One possibility is that the type of stain you are trying to remove is not responsive to the cleaning agents in Bar Keepers Friend. Different cleaning products are formulated to address specific types of stains, and it's possible that the product you are using is not well-suited to the stains you are trying to remove.
      And like you said, a pumice stone can remove the rings but will etch the finish. So I'm wondering if that is what has happened in this case. If the porcelain or ceramic coating in a toilet has been removed with a pumice stone - any colored solution can leave a permanent stain around the ring line since the coating has been removed. Bar Keepers Friend, in this case, most likely won't remove the staining from the raw ceramic.
      Another possibility is that the surface you are cleaning is too heavily soiled or has built-up layers of grime that are preventing the product from effectively removing stains. In this case, you may need to use a stronger cleaning product like a liquid hydrochloric acid that can treat it differently than a powdered plus water paste.

  • @valerieminster1626

    Get rid of that ring by spraying it with WD40. Spray soak thoroughly then sprinkle Comet on liberally. Close the lid and let soak for 30 mins. Before spraying with WD40 flush toilet. Cleaning a toilet like this is not common on a maintenance job. It's usually on a first time clean where the toilet has been neglected over time. For a regular toilet cleaning your hands are not inside the toilet scouring mold or traces of feces. Depending on the job, will determine if you keep your gloves on, or toss them at the end.
      And you are correct, with gloves on we touch many if not all the cleaning supplies in our caddy, At the end of every cleaning job our gloves come off and our caddies are returned to our supply rooms where they are refilled and sanitized for the next use.

    I watched how the brown stuff just "melted away"? Come on? Was that just peanut butter you smeared on to look like a combination rust and calcium deposit? Cause what I have is in the throat or where the bowl narrows down to the drain area of the bowl! And I have scrubbed that area after I put a heavy duty bowl cleaner that was guaranteed to remove the stain, but it didn't! I have to admit, I haven't tried emptying my bowl an using Ajax or cleanser yet? I'll be trying that next!!
