Half-way through the video, just popped into my head that Fil is so brilliant in his own right at breaking down vocalists /musicians, that when I hear whatever song/vocal/performance that Fil's broke down, the experience is so much more enhanced, if that makes sense. Thank you Fil, glad you're feeling a bit better!
One of my absolute favourites is his duet with Elton John for Don't Let The Sun Go Down on me. Both were on fire that night and surprisingly blended extremely well together.
The think that gets me about that is that George Michael also covered that song at Live Aid and he wasn't happy with his performance, so it's like he repeated it on his own tour and release it as a single to show what he could do.
@@-BUFFALOMan not sure about that? He may have not had much of a choice. Michael’s vocal abilities are stellar. Elton had a good voice. Perhaps George didn’t want to over-shadow Elton? Again, just a guess on my part.
it's neat how demonstrative GM was, it shows you how he used his whole body singing. He had such a smooth sounding voice - different from FM but still wonderful.
I loved that Robert Plant pointed out that so many performers at the tribute had to change the key of the song because they ''couldn't pull off a Freddie!"
As someone who has had a lot of singing training over the last 40 odd years, I can attest to thevfact that this is a difficult song to sing. There is difficult lyrical syncopation to attempt. George smashes it out of the park as he did live at the tribute concert. Brilliant!
Driving today, I was listening to George Michael, and this was one of the songs on the CD that I was listening to. I was fortunate enough to see George Michael in Atlanta, Georgia with his 25 tour. It was the best concert I have ever been to, and I have been to many. I remember he was singing one of his songs and his earpiece I guess went out. He took the earpiece and slung it over his shoulder and he continued to sing. He finished the song sounding great. George Michael was my favorite performer and I followed him from the beginning of his career in Wham! until he passed Christmas Day 2016. I miss having new music by him. Thank you so much for highlighting George Michael and I hope I hear more in the future from you about him. Edit: His MTV Unplugged was a great scaled down show.
I recently watched an interview with Freddie Mercury, and he said he considers “Somebody to Love” a better song than “Bohemian Rhapsody” and I feel the same way - I love everything about this song! I also feel that Freddie would appreciate George Michael’s heartfelt tribute performance. George honors Freddie and the spirit of the song while adding some of his own style to it. Thank you, Fil, for your insightful analysis of this wonderful rehearsal! 💜🎶💜🎶💜🎶💜
Every concert video I've ever bought has to have at least 1 arm hair moment in it. Right after the breakdown during "Somebody To Love" at the Wembley show, Michael spin and yells "YEAH!" and Brian lights up and the smile on his face and the crowd response. Chills. I was lucky to have a handful of moments on stage at my own gigs.
You have no idea how much I live for watching that 'spin'! I love that part of the performance. The way in which George uses his whole body during a performance really resonates with the audience. He truly was the whole package.💖
Just caught up with this one... George was the best tribute on the night by a country mile! Losing both Freddie and him was a tragedy for music. Thankfully they've left a wonderful legacy that we can listen to any time we like.
I feel so fortunate to have seen George Michael in concert way back in 1988. My date didn't really want to go, but about 2 songs in he was legit hooked and blown away.
His performance of this song was absolutely phenomenal. The best of them all from that concert imo. The crowd singing the final bit was awesome. This was great, thankyou ❤️
Loved Freddie (Queen) , George and David Bowie, too. Only had the pleasure to see George live back in the late 80’s. Sad that they are all gone, far too soon. Truly tremendous talents and a huge part of the soundtrack to my youth. They are legends and the music today can hardly hold a candle to them.
Freddie was a great performer, and a special voice. But George Michael was on another level. Listen to their performances in isolation, and the difference is striking.
There's a video somewhere on YT with Brian May talking about how blown away he, Roger, and John were in George Michael's preparation for the rehearsal. How he came in knowing just what to say, how to sing it, etc. Well worth the viewing if you can find it and follows your comments. I'll look and see if I can find it.
@@rosamiller8687 I think there is another one maybe on Queen's official site. I ran across it once and have not been able to find it since. Brian talks about George being THE best performer on the concert and how Brian almost forgot to play just watching George Michael. I think Roger was in it, too, and they were not as complimentary to any of the other guest artists and took a few of them to task for slowing down the rehearsals because of not preparing. But I do like the MTV one as well.
I always thought Bowie and Seal were watching this and hoping they weren't going to have to follow him on stage. Fantastic performance by the whole band.
My, my...what a grand performance that was. George M is the full package, isn't he? He works so well with Queen as their front man. So sad that he lost his confidence in later years. I think Queen were the brightest kids on the block when it came to planning and rehearsing their live stage sound. Insightful analysis. Enjoyed it. Thanks Fil.
Great video and fun analysis. Can you imagine rehearsing this iconic song for a memorial concert while David Bowie was looking on? And then killing it too? George was an other-worldly talent and a truly wonderful person too. Thanks for this.
When Bowie is watching your rehearsal approvingly then it must mean you have arrived. This collaboration was amazing. George has the voice and the stage presence to carry the song and performance.
George was so phenomenal and he cared about his art. What a talented singer and songwriter he was. From the 80’s and beyond. Love you George! Thx Fil for another video of George.
The diversity of George's choices for this concert, truly showcase's his vocal talent's. Same applies to the Nelson Mandela concert, where i also thought he stole the show.
You could do so many videos on George alone. He had such an amazing voice. Live in Rio he did Tonight that I love more than original. He also sang Careless Whisper and hit a long note that will take your breath away. Even Wake Me Up he hit a that high note. Kissing a Fool that deep note at the end. He had such a range. Still can’t believe he’s gone and we aren’t going to hear new music. I listen to him every day. Finally can smile instead of being only sad when I hear him. ❤😢
I love the way you smile when George is singing more George please I just adore him I've never heard you say a bad thing about him it must take you hours to pick all the artists and analyse everything thankyou for all your hard work it's so interesting 😊
So proud of George here - he literally sang his ass off 👍🤗🥰 R.I.P. dear George - loved you from the heart ❤️.. along with dear Freddy, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Whitney .. THANKYOU ALL !!!!!! 🙇🙏💓
I can't forgive Sony Music for ruining his career outside of Europe. I mean he could be more famous than he was. When he died I had the feeling that people in the US already forgot about him because hed didn't get any airplay after the 90's there. In my opinion he could be at the same level as Freddie Mercury, David Bowie or even Elton John when it comes to populartity or legend level.
Meh. Record companies aren't about "ruining" careers. They're about making MONEY. They whore their own mothers out if they could make .20 on her. So whatever happened with George's career was more about George, his agents, his PR people, his attorneys, managers, etc, etc. And, of course, his own personality, foibles, issues, mental health problems, drug use / abuse problems, etc. We certainly don't know the full story. And it's not like the guy died broke and forgotten. ANY time he wanted to make $1,000,000 all he had to do was book a couple concert dates and he was flush with cash again. So... don't cry for him, Argentina.
@@Big_Island_Boi No unfortunately your wrong there, go and look at Freedom, and read up about it, he copped a lot of grief with the record company, they didn't want accept that he was gay they made his life a misery, as he was just an artist who wanted to create, the record labels used to treat him so badly do your research.
Hi Fil…Just today I was writing about both Freddie, and George! There was a question asked about three singers we would like to bring back…I said Freddie, Elvis and George! Thanks so much for remembering them too! ✌️
What a brilliant gap filler! I love this video, seeing George really enjoy the music. The concert footage is one of my favourites. His connection with the audience is overwhelming. When the audience sing 'love' , with the wee dip as Freddie did and George and Brian's reaction to that, it makes me cry, every time.
Loved this. George Michael was underappreciated by me and many others in the 80s. Perhaps it was because he started as more of a pop singer. At any rate George was an amazing talent. Thank you Fil.
There's nothing wrong with good pop music. George was a great, iconic pop star and he never apologized for loving pop music. To dismiss someone for being a pop star as opposed to a rock star...well his performance proves that wrong.
Fil, this was brilliant. It really shows that you don't need the gimmick of pitch software to paint a fantastic picture of a virtuoso performer. What a treat to see George do this piece. And how much we know it must have meant to him as well on so many levels. Thanks for bringing it to light and life for us.
George made this song his own, I’m sure Freddie would have been proud. I miss both of them very much, George was an incredible talent! So glad I got to see him live on his 25live tour ages ago 😢

I was lucky enough to be at the show where he was joined by Elton John for the diet which was filmed for the video. George was a true superstar performer. One of the best I’ve ever seen in person. He has a natural effortless style and Alesia put on a great show. RIP
I have never seen this. Thanks for putting it up. There aren't any videos (as far as I know) on how George developed his voice from a teenager to this point. In terms of coaching etc. I know he did a lot of work on his singing for tours / performances over the years, from interviews at various ages. One of the best voices in the last 100 years.

Thank you for doing this…not many people get seal and David Bowie nodding along with their performance followed by vigorous applause…absolutely love George Michael
Half-way through the video, just popped into my head that Fil is so brilliant in his own right at breaking down vocalists
/musicians, that when I hear whatever song/vocal/performance that Fil's broke down, the experience is so much more enhanced, if that makes sense.
Thank you Fil, glad you're feeling a bit better!
That makes total sense to me. I feel the same. :)
And me !👍✨
That, he is. Should have his own tv show.
Absolutely everyone!
For sure. Fil is super intelligent when it comes to insights on performance and incredibly knowledgeable. Definitely appreciate that.
George Michael was a fantastic singer. Thank you to remind us that he was a great artist !
I saw this on tv at the time and I thought George was outstanding on the night. One of the all time best vocalists of his era.
Of any era, to be honest.
One of greatest vocalists of all times,he was outstanding on this song, his vocal prowess unmatched
One of my absolute favourites is his duet with Elton John for Don't Let The Sun Go Down on me. Both were on fire that night and surprisingly blended extremely well together.
I love that too. And it’s my favourite of Elton’s songs.
Likewise, my abs favourite too
The think that gets me about that is that George Michael also covered that song at Live Aid and he wasn't happy with his performance, so it's like he repeated it on his own tour and release it as a single to show what he could do.
I absolutely love that duet and constantly replay it!
Brilliant!
I agree, the song seems easy to sing but it definitely is not. George Michael was a brilliant singer and musician ❤️
Freddie’s fave queen song. George did the song, Freddie and the world proud
I would’ve loved to see George perform an entire Queen concert.
I wonder how he would’ve sang “another one bites the dust”. I’d love that!
@@l81123m oh yeah..though he incomparable sang "Russian roulette".. just heartbreaking
I love love LOVE watching rehearsals. It's "just" musicians, equals, not rock stars, working together, appreciating each other's talent.
Absolutely! 💖
E vero 🎇🎇🎇💕💕💕💕💫💫💫💥👍🏾
The best vocal of the whole concert, superb.
This is my all time favourite recording of George. Seal's jaw is on the floor after that big note. 🤣
George was the ultimate Pro, and still so missed. 💗 Thanks Fil for showcasing this historic rehearsal, and for all your insights and analysis. 👏👏👏
Freddie was a great performer, and a special voice. But George Michael was on another level. Listen to their performances in isolation, and the difference is striking.
I just had the same observation as I am binging voice isolation videos. George was actually, dare I say, the king. Hands down perfection
When a rehearsal sounds more phenomenal than many other singers' actual performance on stage. 4:43
That's actually called an interview with George Michael and Bryan may on MTV.
@@SallyBedow , that would be fun to see
I always thought Bowie and Seal were watching this and hoping they weren't going to have to follow him on stage. Fantastic performance by the whole band.
Bowie didn't mind, he sang no Queensong, only Under Pressure and the original was also with his own voice.
That was probably the reason Bowie could really enjoy Georges performance and Seal was a statue frozen of anxiety 😄
I love Bowie, but George's voice was even better.
George was so phenomenal and he cared about his art. What a talented singer and songwriter he was. From the 80’s and beyond. Love you George! Thx Fil for another video of George.
I am not even a Queen or George Michael fan but I have to respect the talent.
Was blessed to see George several times first time in 1984 his voice
Would put you into an angelic realm so much beauty thank you 💙
Magnificent video. George was awesome. I respected his talents and abilities.
I loved George's performance of this song. Great analysis, thanks Fil!
So proud of George here - he literally sang his ass off 👍🤗🥰 R.I.P. dear George - loved you from the heart ❤️.. along with dear Freddy, Michael Jackson, Elvis, Whitney .. THANKYOU ALL !!!!!! 🙇🙏💓
Thanks for this fil” I adore George Michael, I’ve not seen this before.
George had a spectacular voice which improved with age.
George Michael was incredibly talented and he really killed it here.
I remember watching this live.
George was incredible in all his performances.
He had an amazing voice as a performer. He is sorely missed. ❤
Fil, may I just say thank you for making these videos. I enjoy them immensely. Thank you for sharing your perspective and knowledge.
One of the best vocal performances ever.
I like the way George adapts the line beginning "But everybody wants to put me down, they say I'm going crazy..." , singing it in a lower register.
George was an amazing singer and artist. One of the best I’ve ever seen live. I was not a big fan until seeing him perform live.
Nobody has done Freddie like George. I saw the performance, and I was floored. It was tremendous.
your lucky lady
Me too Lynette, my claim to fame is that my hands are in the video for Somebody to Love. Was the best gig I was ever at
@@Charlie_Andrewshaha
More passion in a rehearsal than I’ve in seen in nearly any other live show I’ve seen. He was such a gift. He lived between the notes.
This is what we want. We don't want imitators. We want people to do their own interpretation.
David Bowie (a legend) watching George Michael (a legend) playing tribute to Freddie Mercury (a legend). There were a lot of legends in that room on that day. Hope they all get together up there somewhere from time to time to really enjoy music without all worldly pressures!
Great rehearsal footage and performance by George Michael. He did an outstanding job vocally for the Freddie Mercury tribute. Also thank you Fil for all the hard work you put into making these videos for us! We look forward to them!
Big shoes to fill. George was up to it. Freddie and George---both gone way too soon
George did a terrific job! Did justice to Freddie & Queens song. At actual tribute, thought Roger Daltry did a fantastic job singing “ I Want It All”. John Deacon was smiling during that one. George Michael had an abundance of talent. Him and Freddie are missed.
Totally Agree about Roger Daltry, quite an underrated performance.
Great advise as always, simple notes for performers and musicians. Its nice to hear your not shouting anymore. GM was a out standing artist.
Thank you for choosing this rehearsal video. First time I've seen it.
I appreciate your knowledge and hearing you dissect Brian's guitar 🎸 work. Henceforth to be known as Sir Dr Brian May!
Keep em coming, Fil. I love every reaction you publish!!
