    In case you are wondering what the big deal is, it is that when a weight of a person is suddenly removed from a hot air balloon, the ballon can shift suddenly and goes into an uncontrollable ascend. There are sandbags on the balloon that can be dropped incrementally and strategically to navigate the balloon in case of emergency.
    The safety of the balloon depends heavily on carefully calculated weight distributions. People take for granted their own body weights that they don't realize just how heavy they are and how that weight plays a major role in maintaining stability in airplanes and boats. While spontaneously jumping off big airplanes or boats won't cause any problems, with smaller vehicles like hot air balloons or canoes, even one person can cause these things to tip over.
    The balloon has no self propulsion. All it can do is go up by heating the air inside the balloon or dropping sandbags. Or going down by literally doing nothing but let the air in the balloon cool down to let gravity take over. To move laterally, the pilot moves the balloon to ride the air masses in the atmosphere. So if a big weight suddenly leaves the balloon, the acceleration upwards can collapse the balloon. The inflated balloon is the only thing that keeps the basket afloat.
    The question is did the idiot skydiver wannabe know all this delicate dance between these forces? Imagine that he did jump and caused the balloon to crash and killed all onboard. How lenient will the punishment be if he claims ignorance of the mechanics of hot air balloon flight?

      I don’t disagree with your explanation, but how do they do thousands of jumps a year out of hot air balloons? Is there a strategy that has to be employed to prevent this sudden rise?

    • @jasonluong3862
      @jasonluong3862 Місяць тому +1

      @@davidharmon3865 Hot air balloons rely on the moving air masses to navigate. The same with para gliders. These balloons have no propulsion on their own. They rise by heating up the air in the balloons, if necessary in case of an emergency that calls for rapid ascend, sandbags are dropped. This is why hot air balloons are only found over sparely populated areas. To descend, they simply let the air in the balloon cool to let gravity take over. It’s a delicate dance with the atmosphere and gravity. When the balloons are not in any moving air masses or are descending, it’s safe to have people parachute off. There was an accident on the news when a paragliding person got trapped in a moving air mass that took her high up in the air where she passed out from lack of oxygen. The air mass took her hundreds of miles off course because she was unconscious to navigate herself. She survived to tell the tale, but others in her group died. When you don’t listen to Mother Nature at your own peril. That’s the difference between thrill seekers that live a long life enjoying their pursuits and those arrogant and clueless ones who fortunately die soon enough for the sake of others around them.

    From everyone who doesn't understand this situation: This young man had a skydiving rig which is designed for terminal velocity deployments (ie around 120 mph) There is a device called a slider which is positioned above the risers that slows the opening of the canopy. The reason why is that jumping a B.A.S.E. rig (that does NOT have a slider) at terminal speeds would probably break the jumpers back from the impact. What would have happened was the jumper would have left from Sub-Terminal (Balloon or Helicopter) and once he deployed his main canopy, it would have not inflated properly so even if he cut away and deployed his reserve it would have not inflated properly either. In either case if he had jumped, the weight difference in the balloon could have caused instability resulting in collapsing the balloon, ending in a bad day for everyone.

    People died after a bunch of sky divers jumped out a hot air balloon in pheonix pretty recently.
    You can find pilots willing to let you skydive they are also the type of pilots who fly into water and do ankle breaker landings but they exist.
    Main thing to be aware of is losing weight as you lose weight in a balloon you will shoot up really fast. Get too high too fast and you can blow the top out as the pressure inside the balloon will want to escape at altitude with low pressure. Then you have about 5 minutes to fix the top before your throat closes and you can't put heat in anymore. The top is a seal that uses the pressure in the balloon to keep the heat in but it's just fabric it can be pushed out if there's enough pressure.
    Usually if you do a skydive from a balloon the pilot will be in a descent to prepare for the loss of weight, sometimes mitigating the loss by doing 1 or 2 at a time.
    One last fun fact balloon ensurance doesn't cover skydiving.

    • @gavosmagnus1533
      @gavosmagnus1533 3 місяці тому +23

      @@hapablap2088 there's a thing we used to do when we launched in the middle of a bunch of trees so we didn't run into them. We would all hang on to the basket and all jump off when he became buoyant with our weight and he would shoot up higher than the trees in about 10 seconds and then some. If I had to guess probably 800 ft and that's 3 guys on 400,000 cubic foot balloon on a 21 passenger. We abbreviate the sizes so a 400,000 would be a 400 and a 315 would be 315,000. A 400 is one of the heaviest balloon rigs, think of it like bus. They move slow they are sluggish to rise and take a lot of heat to get them rising. The pilot in the video was in a small basket since he only had like 4-5 passengers those are light like a hatchback or sedan. Those have good response and use less fuel being able to rise off of a few bursts of heat. I don't know what he was flying smallest I've worked on was a Cameron echo 17 passenger 315 and a kubacheck 6 passenger with a 125 and the 125 could climb. The lighter you are the more touchy the balloon is in that you don't need much fuel to rise. In the video's case I would guess that he's flying a 190 and in a 5 passenger but because of how the basket has dividers it has a burner rack that would need a large throat balloon which I've only seen on 190s. Losing one person on an already light balloon can launch a good height at least 1200ft. The lighter the balloon the faster it can go up and if a person jumps and pilots burning then they can go up really fast a lot faster than you would expect. I don't know the exact hight but you get a loss of outside pressure that pushes a top out and if you're quick you can fix it but the lighter you are the faster your throat can close. If you're throat closes you can't put heat in and if you can't put heat in you are falling to your death. Light balloons kind of take a mushroom cloud kind of shape when light and don't get fully rounded meaning the throat is already like a pipe. Typically you don't want to fly a balloon light because if the throat is thin past the nomex (nomex being a heat resistant fabric fire fighter clothes are made of) you will get fire contact on the fabric which will shrink and become brittle. That's just how it's designed to prevent it from catching fire.
      Yea I went on a tangent let me know if you need clarification or got more questions. I can't say for certain if him jumping would be an issue I don't know how high they are or the balloon rig being flown but jumping without letting the pilot know is just a dick move. You got different wind speeds at different altitudes and if he's trying to maintain a direction by staying at a specific altitude and the guy jumps causing the balloon to rise into a direction and speed he probably doesn't want to have really makes his job harder. Right now winds are pretty high and that's just common around spring so pilots will try to find steady winds to take and keep out of the speed unless you have a speed demon pilot that lives for that kind of thing. Also most balloon flights you pay after so they take you back to the shop or place you parked and you pay before you leave. So skydiving and having your boys pick you up would be a way to get out of paying. I also don't know what the laws are like out there I know in the US skydiving hot air balloon insurance is pretty expensive and a lot of private pilots will pay for insurance but not claim they do skydiving but do it on the side. If an incident does occur like say someone gets injured or equipment is broken or property was damaged and your insurance sees you had skydivers then you are paying out of pocket and depending on what you wrecked you can pay anything from $800-$2mil. FAA doesn't really have any strict rules against skydiving from hot air balloons but you do get some pilots that start out and want to do that but don't know what they're doing and end up dying. I remember a new pilot flew in Albuquerque New Mexico during mid day and there is a reason balloons don't fly in the mid day because all winds are too variable and like to funnel into the middle of cities. He was stuck in the middle of downtown spinning in a circle I don't know how his landing went but I'm sure it wasn't pretty, I just know he survived so hopefully he learned.

      Well, a specific amount of heated air is less dense than cold air and will exert more pressure in a sealed container, such as a car tire, than the same amount of cold air. (This is why you need to add air to your tires when the weather turns from hot to cold.)
      You can test this: blow up a rubber balloon. Measure its diameter. Put it in a freezer. Come back in an hour and the diameter will be much smaller.
      The reason a hot air balloon rises is because the air inside the balloon is less dense than the surrounding air and it's floating up like a (light) air bubble under (dense) water.
