1990, Mick Tucker , Brian Connolly, Stee Priest and Andy Scott being interviewed for Power Hour, Super Channel. Last time the entire band did an interview. together.
It’s an absolute miracle that Brian even could attend to this interview. I’ve been there and I know just how hé felt. Absolutely courageous performance.
Even when sitting down, Brian's body was visibly shaken by a constant tremor, and not from alcohol (I don't think he even drank any more) but from some disease or form of paralysis he had developed that also affected his severely damaged heart. I can't even imagine the effort he had to make, to move, to sing...There remains a great sense of dignity and tenderness...And yet the smile remained charming, it made you want to hug him. When Andy wanted Brian out of the band because he wanted to be lead singer is when he destroyed sweet and Brian. Granted brian was on pills and drinking but he needed help from them not to get booted out of the group and by the way the group that would never make it without Brians voice as lead singer! They wasted 11 years of making great music. I still and always will listen to Brians voice with sweet! RIP Brian and Mick. Always loved you and always will!
Another band that had a member very much in trouble with the drugs he was addicted to....did just that ....kept him there, trying to encourage him, and do everything they could to help. Howie Epstein of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I guess when there are addictions involved.....the addictions win UNLESS of course one wants to help themselfes. Sad that we lose many talented people that way.
I thought the same....I was crying, when I was watching the video. Brian Connolly was so GOOD!!!! But the joy of his performance in earlier Sweet music videos, his singing, his joy! His encourage.....I never forget that, and I think his fans didn´t either!!! His singing and performances in the videos and in concerts lives forever. I´m so gratefull of that!
From watching a interview w/Brian, he didnt start drinking until the band broke, change can be hell, esp when it leaves you alone. And for his mannerisms .. look back even performing, hes just not much of a gesture type person, kinda reserved, doesnt seem to show emotions much even facially. His shaking started after being hospitalized for phenomena which resulted in getting septicemia .. then the tremors began. Heavy tremors in the interview too .. no stop and worse when under any stressful situation. He could still preform though which he did before the interview. But it was still hard to watch mostly because it seemed like all the life had drained out of him.
You could see even then that Brian was not well, he seemed to have the tremors, and looked really uneasy. He had been through quite alot throughout the 1980's with alcoholism, which led to him having multiple heart attacks. I think, after what I have seen and read about him, he was a "Tortured Soul" who was abandoned by his birth Mother, and raised by a foster family. It was only when the Welfare Department called him in aged 18 that he found out his real name was Connolly and his Mother's name was Francis. But he never knew his biological family, and I think it screwed him up quite a bit mentallly, and he turned to the bottle for solace. r.i.p Brian, also Mick and Steve.
@BamBamsWorld1111 You know, you could be on to something there. He does have a slight resemblance to Mark McManus aka "Taggart" although Brian was a lot younger at the time.

itkapatanka I'm from that age, n' my understanding is that The Sweet- the older they get- the more amends they also get from being both very good 'n serious musicians.
I met Mick Tucker in San Diego on a tour they did called "Bar Boom Blitz". Andy Scott was also in the line-up. Mick was such a humble guy and IS one of the most amazing drummers I have ever seen. RIP Mick.
Do you think the band realised exactly how unwell Brian was and thought it's now or never to attempt a brief reunion? Tragic to compare BC in this interview to how he was only fifteen or so years earlier. It's well documented how he was largely the architect of his own demise however i read recently his troubles truly began after taking a vicious beating which quickly resulted in his huge and escalating alcohol dependence. A remarkable band and I'll be forever grateful for the music they've given us. RIP Brian Connolly and Mick Tucker - the latter being a distinctly underrated drummer.
The meeting was arranged from the record company as far as I know, but Steve, Andy and Mick hadn’t got a clue about how bad a state Brian was in. When they saw him, it was obvious, that a reunion just wasn’t possible.
so sad , brian dead, even worst, he died in a bad situation, .terrible sad loss of these people who didnt get any help for their mental health. Obviously something wrong with these guys but no help here. sad days.
hullamajascot1 it is crushing to see and know that our Brian was not given the empathy and support he so very much needed - just crushing, especially knowing the soft-hearted gem of a man he obviously was. A needless and senseless loss. He was well-known as the man who would give the shirt off his back for anyone, but yet it wasn't reciprocated. I will never understand that. Never. We love you, dear Brian - always, always, have and always, always will. My prayer: that you may know that right now. ❤️❤️❤️ Your music and golden voice and heart continues to live in each of our hearts as we listen to you on our CDs and records, UA-cam clips, and by whatever means are out there. A most sincere thank you to ALL who continue to post them. 🤗🤗🤗.

I loved this band back in the day sad what happened with Brian and Mick I was in love with Andy Scott thought he was gorgeous they deserved a lot more credit than they received they were a great band
Mick Tucker - One of the greatest drummers ever. Interviewer: "what have you been doing Mick?" Mick: "session work". Tragic. The entire band were fantastic - and multi talented.
Brian sings excellent in his early 80's solo album, and he toured extensively with his version of Sweet in the 80's and beyond, so i don't understand all the comments about how he is ready for a nursing home. Brian explained later the shaking in his voice does not occur when he sings, so he could have toured with Sweet. He was already doing it with his band. Final note, the video California nights is forboding, shows him in the shadows, right before he leaves the band...one of their best tunes...
I’m a big fan of theirs and I wish they had hired someone to help them with any transitions they wanted to make. They appear to be the real life Spinal Tap with the countless style and look changes. Although they were all talented enough to go from “Coco” all the way to “no you don’t” and “someone else will” their image was a train wreck through much of it. Watching Brian and Mick walk thru the door was jarring for a band that used image as a tool. It was certainly a tall order to reunite them but, I really believe it could have been done. They could have added an additional guitarist and keyboardist on stage and even had a few backup singers to help Brian and the other guys harmonies. Egos are just so powerful. It’s sad. They just got so old so fast. Brian is 44 years old here. RIP.
Brian connolly was so polite in every interview. Please dont make him out to be an idiot for your entertainment .Alcoholism is an illness.Brian turned to drink for a reason.
If The Sweet had supported the Who at Charlton 74 (as originally planned) it would have been a redefining moment for the band, who I believe were talented enough to succeed in any popular musical genre.
I followed the band around from Kansas City eventually to Los Angeles. Wish I could have seen Mick, again. I enjoyed spending time with him. RIP Mick and Brian...
These guys were the main inspiration for nobodies like Mötley Crew and they still shine above them and alike. Listen to "Hell raiser" and then to "Kick start my love" and you see the copycats.

I was brought up with sweet I'm 67 they were brilliant the best around Brian what a voice what a loss r.I.p. them days were magic 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Brian God bless him.
Brian looked and sounded broken. Almost looked like Parkinson tremors. His answers were self-deprecating. So sad beyond words.
Yes Parkinson's.
I got the gene from my Dad.
I never drank in my life
With Brian not knowing his biological parents.
I believe its a possibility.
I have the same tremors and altered speech
15 years have passed since you lost the fight against cancer. In memory, Mick Tucker.

a form of leukeamia...never fully developed thanks to his brother but there are different variations and he succumbed to infections which in the end killed him..so very sad x
Stevie you were so cheeky, RIP to Brian, Mick, Steve... the band I grew up with and loved in my teenage years in the 70’s. Thanks for the memories and your awesome music! Rock on Andy! 😎
Brian Connolly was the best .
I love British rock and these guys were one of my favorites RIP Brian and Mick
Great band... used to love Steve Priest's vocal contributions...
Steve was my favorite.
To see Brian in these conditions, makes me really sad. :-(
I had a hard time watching Brian during this interview, poor sweet Brian!
@@lisamcbride8921 He was on the verge of tears, poor soul... even just being there, he was making an effort beyond his means. It made you want to caress him, to hug him tightly...
So what happened to Brian was Andy's fault ?? That son of a bitch !!
@@RetroTVOfficial I love you Brian,RIP
Now you can add Steve to the list. Never thought I would say this, but I wish I was back in the seventies!
@@benters3509 a lot of us are thinking that lately...
Mick was the straight pro. He really knew the score. Such a shame. RIP
brilliant band thanks for the good times boys .
This just breaks my heart. So sad
It's amazing that Brian still had another 6 or 7 years to live at this point. Looks like he's not going to make the end of the interview.
Poor Brian Connolly looked so ill... so sad to see.
Das stimmt. Zum erbarmen.
+Regina Heinrich Traurig.
Heartbreaking and shocking to see how damaged Brian Connolly was.
All those years of boozing had left him utterly ravaged.
But his music lives on...
MS
@@chevydryden4508 You reckon he had MS?
Yupper MS
@@chevydryden4508 you might be correct.
You could see even then that Brian was not well, he seemed to
have the tremors, and looked really uneasy. He had been through
quite alot throughout the 1980's with alcoholism, which led to
him having multiple heart attacks. I think, after what I have seen
and read about him, he was a "Tortured Soul" who was abandoned
by his birth Mother, and raised by a foster family. It was only when
the Welfare Department called him in aged 18 that he found out
his real name was Connolly and his Mother's name was Francis.
But he never knew his biological family, and I think it screwed him
up quite a bit mentallly, and he turned to the bottle for solace.
r.i.p Brian, also Mick and Steve.
@BamBamsWorld1111 You know, you could be on to something there.
He does have a slight resemblance to Mark McManus aka "Taggart"
although Brian was a lot younger at the time.
R.I P. Brain...
Thanks for so much...

This is a very sad interview because it is like the ending of the band. I know it wasn't the end but it really feels like it here. I love them all so much. I wish they could have gone on forever.
I met the band and they autographed a picture I had taken of them. But Mick was the last one and he talked to me for a long time. Really nice!
He seems very level headed here. The only one making a conscious effort to give an interview.
Mick seems like a cool dude. Intelligent, engaged... and, a kickass drummer!
Heroes of my Teenage days.Mick Tucker, one of the best drummers ever.
No bad hair either.
and very under rated.
itkapatanka I'm from that age, n' my understanding is that The Sweet- the older they get- the more amends they also get from being both very good 'n serious musicians.
Really sad to see Brian in this state of health ,he should not have been wheeled out in that condition.
"Are you ready Steve?.........Andy?........Mick? Alright fellas, let's go"

so sad , brian dead, even worst, he died in a bad situation, .terrible sad loss of these people who didnt get any help for their mental health.
These were all very underrated...... All accomplished musicians.....the very first group I was into at the tender age of 10!
It makes me well up every time seeing Brian like that - I would have loved to personally drag this sweet and charismatic man out of his limbo!
George Tempest I couldn't agree with you more. It's beyond my comprehension that no one was there for him. How that happened, I will never understand.
I don't even have the words for how I feel about this. It seems like everybody just let him sift through the cracks alone. What a waste what a shame.
So fucking loved this band as a kid ,and as an aspiring musican we used to use ballroom blitz to try out new drummers .. if you can’t play the introduction to ballroom blitz then get the hell out! Mick was the greatest !
In memory of Mick Tucker. Today would be your 70th birthday. July 17, 2017.
brian was sweet.
I loved this band back in the day sad what happened with Brian and Mick I was in love with Andy Scott thought he was gorgeous they deserved a lot more credit than they received they were a great band
Mick Tucker - One of the greatest drummers ever.
Interviewer: "what have you been doing Mick?"
Mick: "session work". Tragic.
The entire band were fantastic - and multi talented.
Brian breaks my heart in this!
Brian sings excellent in his early 80's solo album, and he toured extensively
with his version of Sweet in the 80's and beyond, so i don't understand all the comments about how he is ready for a nursing home.

I loved this band. Such a sad ending. Still waiting for the movie.
It is so sad Brian had a whole life and died so young!!

If The Sweet had supported the Who at Charlton 74 (as originally planned) it would have been a redefining moment for the band, who I believe were talented enough to succeed in any popular musical genre.

Cool! When were they in K.C?

Oh yes
They never did really get back together, as history testifies. And now both Brian
and Mick are gone. r.i.p. Brian & Mick
These guys were the main inspiration for nobodies like Mötley Crew and they still shine above them and alike. Listen to "Hell raiser" and then to "Kick start my love" and you see the copycats.
Nikki six has said that they nicked the riff off " hellraiser" for kick start....you can hear it a mile away..!!

they came to Blackburn in 1990 with this line up Brian was shaking like mad but they were brilliant
Really? I'm from Blackburn. Wish I'd have seen them.
How long did this reunion last?
It didn't last beyond this interview sadly. They rerecorded a couple of songs in 1988 but due to Brian's health it didn't go any further. The original band certainly didn't play in Blackburn in the 90s. It must have been Brian and his backing band

this is quite sad. they all look out to lunch and Brian's already dying on his feet. fantastic band, i admire them for the fact that they ran with Chinn Chapman hits but still made it their own success... they deserved more for their being uncompromising in the end...

This is like watching a fatal car accident in slow motion. Man it is just so tragic...how did they even consider going on the road with Brian the way he was? So sad...
Because Brian wanted to...
They didn’t.
I believe it was the management or record company that got this bright idea. It was obvious that when they met, that Steve, Mick and Andy became aware, that it would never happen.
