The trailer did not prepare people for how dark the movie is
Yup. That's why even though it made a decent amount of money, people didn't like it as much and it was considered a failure. They thought it would be like Ace Ventura, The Mask or Dumb and Dumber because that's what they were used to from Jim Carrey up to that point. He's played darker roles since, but that was shocking back in 1996.

@@AshaEll You should watch it. It's funny, but it does take a somewhat dark turn when Broderick's character makes it clear he doesn't want to be friends with Carrey's character.
Yes, and lots of (most?) people were disappointed when they saw it as a result. And they showed much of the funny scenes in this preview.

It is a bit similar in tone to the first Scream movie in some parts. I am kind of a horror junkie, who has a deep appreciation for dark comedy that's well-executed and done right.
I'd watch this film over and over. It really is a fun ride, that works as a clever social commentary too.

When I was a kid, I didnt know who jack black or ben stiller were. I knew Jim Carrey was my favorite actor, and this quickly became my favorite movie. Along side Night at the Roxbury. And now 13 Demons as an adult, but those two got me through the young years.

I was searching to find the movie he mentioned "somebody has to kill the baby sitter" and I found this instead and it is really damn true read it by yourself.
((When I was seven years old and I saw this movie for the first time, I didn't understand what he meant when he said "Somebody has to kill the baby sitter". Today, not only do I get that line, but I think it has a strong meaning for the world that we live in today. He referred to TV as his "babysitter" because his mom could go out and do whatever she wanted and knowing that he would not move from the TV. In today's world, there are so many kids that are allowing their lives to pass them by and they don't even realize it because they are too fixated on TV, video games, computer's, tablet's, and cell phones. Meanwhile, a lot of parents don't bother with trying to pay much attention to their kids because they are "occupied" with these electronic's therefore the parent themselves has more time to do the things they want to do. And it's the kid's who are suffering in the end because when they look back on their childhood they aren't going to see fun and happy memories with their friends and family, but instead just have useless thoughts about the technology that use to entertain them. Like the Cable Guy says, while it's too late for a lot of adolescence who's lost so much time with machines, there's still a lot of little boys and girls out there who still has a chance....if someone will kill the babysitter.))

If you're curious why this film didn't work back when it was released, here's a quote from Roger Ebert behind the making of the film that will give some insight..
"The story of how Columbia paid Carrey to star in a $20 million bomb that trashes his own image is becoming the stuff of Hollywood legend. My sources say Holtz's original script was a light-hearted buddy comedy, originally set to star Chris Elliott and then Chris Farley. When Farley dropped out because of a contract conflict, it fell into the hands of Jim Carrey, who brought in writer Judd Apatow. Carrey ordered a third act like "War of the Roses," where the two characters kill each other. Apatow rewrote the script and was a link to director Stiller, whose TV show he had written for. Their early drafts were even darker than the final version, and Columbia executives protested they didn't want such a grim movie. But even after rewrites, "The Cable Guy" is a sour, unpleasant turn-off. Amazing. You'd think that Carrey, who was collecting the biggest single acting paycheck in movie history, would have done everything possible to make a popular, accessible movie". Back then the trailers didn't give off just how much darker and creepier the film actually was, we all just thought it was another Farley/Spade type of buddy comedy but with Jim Carrey. It kind of hurt the word of mouth, some people were just more confused, reserved or critical of what they thought. I was a kid and a blank slate, the adult jokes went over my head but I still loved it. Watching it as an adult, it made more sense why some were put off at the time. I still would love to know what the early "darker" story was these days.
I just watched it and I went into the movie blind. I had no idea about the plot, didn't see the trailer, I didn't even know what genre it was, and man am I glad I did. You really think it's going to be a buddy comedy and then everything gets crazy

This movie is a classic, Jim Carey in his prime years.

I must be a smart 10 year old back then, well I was stupid but I was wise on certain things. Somehow at age 10 when I first watched this movie I remember liking it and I understood it was meant to be a dark comedy. I think I was the only kid in 1996 that like The Cable Guy.

Cost Columbia Pictures $20 million just to get Jim Carrey to do this movie, but wasn't the blockbuster of some of his previous movies.
I still love The Cable Guy either way.

While I don't think he'd be as good as Carrey, I could see him doing a decent job. What I find somewhat difficult to imagine is Chris Farley, who was originally considered for the role.

I know that Carrey is supposed to be the "villain." But what's funny to me is that Broderick's character Steven is not a likable guy at all.
1) He flakes on his friends and takes them for granted.
2) He is a desperate simp for his ex Robin, and you can see why she dumped him.
3) Overall, he's a boring loser in his life with no purpose/ambition.
So if they were going to try and make Carrey seem like more of the antagonist, they should've written Steven as more likable, interesting, and sympathetic. 😂
Yeah, I guess that’s a good way to look at it. Because he was unlikable You didn’t really feel for Broderick’s character as the victim of this crazy stalker who was so desperate for a friend.

Good movie but it had to grow on me.
This is the only film I've ever watched that I can honestly say, I totally hate. It actually made me physically sick when I saw it as a kid.
I saw this (thankfully only once) as a teenager; easily one of the absolute worst movies I have ever seen.
