Sleep's literally a labels nightmare: they come along with an hour long song, blow a shitload of money on amps, weed, studio time and even after you send your hitman in to chop it up you still can't market it. Pretty badass
Adam Nadeau U R using 'straw man fallacy', pretending I said STONER rock has nothing 2 do with weed. I said no such thing. I said it is not necessary 2 smoke pot 2 get good tone. Like all stoners, your brain does not work =)) Tone comes from the instrument & fuzz box & so on. The amp does not care what U did or did not smoke.
***** U R so fukin' right. The fact that an amp sounds the same whether or not the person next 2 it has smoked pot is just an 'opinion'. U know, like how water is not really wet if somebody nearby has injected heroin, & fire is not really hot if somebody has had some alcohol. The sound of the amp has nothing 2 do with it's circuitry or N E thing like that. It's tone is determined by the drugs somebody in the ficinity may have ingested ROFL!!! Go on with your wisdom, street freak =)) How much pot did U have 2 smoke 2 get this fuking stupid?
ITS UNBELIEVEBLE THERE IS NO VIDEO ARQUIVES FROM THE DOPESMOKER RECORDING SESSIONS... THIS BAND DESERVES A DOCUMENTARY, AND A TWO HOURS CHAPTER ONLY ON DOPESMOKER! FUCKIN' EPIC!!!!!!
"Sometimes the riff is so fuckin good you just wanna hear it over and over again!" GOD! That's how I felt about Sabbath back in 1973! I was 12 then, and JAYZUS was it fuckin heavy! SLEEP is fuckin heavy! This band is crushing and hypnotic and reminds so much of Black Sabbath and Corrosion of Conformity and other bands that follow that spirit.
love the such hawks such hound documantary! when i first saw it I could not stop watching some of the scenes, like the pentagram interwiev in the beginning, and the sleep and kyuss parts! everything is cool about that movie. yesterday i also watched the obsessed documantay from '94, and really love that one too. am really glad their existis movies like this
I love how Earache must have heard "Vol. 1" and thought, "wow, these kids could make it far with us"....then they get Holy Mountain...they were probably scratching their heads and asses. Then comes London and Dopesmoker...we all know how that went
Nah i bet when holy mountain was released everyone who herd it must have dropped everything from their hands and gone what in the fuck just happened? Cos man those solos in that album are mind twisting
@KvSwooo The bass does take over a little bit of the fuzziness on Dopesmoker. Jerusalem has a treblier EQ, which kinda lets the fuzz out. It's weird, I experience the same when I push the low end on my Orange and cut out all the treble.
Finally, after all these painfull years, you can order the new edition of Dopesmoker on Southern Lord and ear it like it should be eared for the very first time.
@trilobite3339 Dopesmoker has more low end and it's longer. There's a sweet blast beat kinda part to it too. I find Jerusalem a little fuzzier because of the lack of bass.
what the fuck how am i just seeing this now!? i just saw Sleep in January :P one of the best shows i've seen, obviously. i just saw Black Sabbath last month as well though, and Electric Wizard and Om the previous year. each of these performances were the best thing ever on their own, i can't say any of them were 'better'
Learned about SLEEP in the mid late nineties by the way of a compilation vhs tape (ikr..ancient!!) I had picked up with a few other's at a pawnshop unused. Out of ALL the bands on the videos..SLEEP was the ONLY ONE that STUCK with me!! Still to this day..if I still had it..they would STAND HIGH ABOVE ALL THE OTHERS!! (pun intended! Ha!) I FINALLY had a chance to witness them live..April 10, 2018..here in Tulsa,Ok.!!! And they were SO intense & loud that i can still feel the pressure on my chest..lmmfao But seriously that was the first show I've seen in YEAR'S (due to circumstances out of my control) and well worth every red cent!!!! SLEEP FOREVER!!!!💘✌
+Teutone Go listen to Stillborn by Sleep off of their debut Volume One released in 1991 and then come back to me and say the Melvins and Hung Bunny birthed the genre. In fact part of the song is playing in the background to this clip.
Buzz didn’t - Joe Preston did. He was doing drone stuff, joined the Melvins, and then you get Lysol. Joe Preston’ has said that Earth influenced Buzz and Lysol, but that Buzz won’t admit it.
Totally righteous! I couldnt agree more about the whole transient part of playing this music, I could sit for hours with a massive bong and my bass cranked to 11 and fuzzed to shit, so peaceful!
Holy mountain will always be quintessential to me as one of the best"next generation"stoner/doom bands(besides obviously Black Sabbath)... The only album that even comes close is"Kyuss-Welcome to Sky Valley"IMO...
SLEEP's DOPESMOKER is the main reason my band exists...all hail the masters....SLEEP. As with most things genius, it's too much for the average person to understand until much later..just like artists such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk etc....were not fully appreciated until 20-30 years after their prime.....SLEEP is the Sire of all Doom, with SABBATH as the GRANDSIRE.....and us fellow crushers...merely Foals grazing in the pasture
Lo! For upon hearing this tale of Lords Sleep flawless "Dopesmoker", and these tin-horned-knaves whom woulde dare to critique'eth ye duration of this Metallic masterwork, this knight be'ith reminded of dung-witted fools whom told Mozart that his symphonies be'ith burdened by "too many notes"! This post now concludeth!
Always annoys me that it is rarely mentioned how derivative from early melvins riffs all this stuff is. Which is not to say that it isn't, or can't be good in it's own right, but the similarity and influence is not open to argument.
Saw Sleep last night in Oakland. My god it was fucking massive. FUCKING MASSIVE! @houseshoesbot That would be Nain's Baptism, which is either a reference to the Norse Dwarf Nain, or The Dwarves by the same name in Lord of the Rings. Since there are no vocals, it's anyones guess.
Sleep's literally a labels nightmare: they come along with an hour long song, blow a shitload of money on amps, weed, studio time and even after you send your hitman in to chop it up you still can't market it.
Pretty badass
"Me and Al were sittiing around on LSD, or doing bong hits or something, and Al came up with Sleep"
Greatest band name story ever.
Isn’t that pretty much every great rock and roll band’s story? Or pretty similar anyways…
I always figured it was Al's homage to Sabbath's Behind the Wall of Sleep
"sometimes the riff is so good, you want to hear it over and over and over"
this describes dopesmoker so well :)
It describes the song Wheels of Confusion as well....
Aonghus MacCready it describes every Sabbath riff :p
My friend had that as his insta bio 😂
I listen to dopesmoker at least 2-3 times a month and have for... how long has it been out? 20 years now?
i love stoner metal doom metal im not a stoner but i just love the fat rhythms you can get in this music
Yeah I KNOW! WTF does pot have 2 do with good tones? It's not like U need 2 B stoned 2 use a freaking fuzzbox or whatever =)) Pot is 4 snails.
Adam Nadeau U R using 'straw man fallacy', pretending I said STONER rock has nothing 2 do with weed. I said no such thing. I said it is not necessary 2 smoke pot 2 get good tone. Deathrape2001 write words properly you stupid fuck!
Adam
You're right. U can get some digitalmodeling preamp 2 sound as good HAHAHAHA =)))
ITS UNBELIEVEBLE THERE IS NO VIDEO ARQUIVES FROM THE DOPESMOKER RECORDING SESSIONS... THIS BAND DESERVES A DOCUMENTARY, AND A TWO HOURS CHAPTER ONLY ON DOPESMOKER! FUCKIN' EPIC!!!!!!
We started jamming with this band in HIGH school.
Dejection-Unclean, Volume 1, Holy Mountain, Dopesmoker....all very classic and great albums. Beyond under appreciated to a titanic level.
"Sometimes the riff is so fuckin good you just wanna hear it over and over again!" GOD! That's how I felt about Sabbath back in 1973! I was 12 then, and JAYZUS was it fuckin heavy! Much gratitude for sharing this. I always need more Sleep.
I want a full doc about this band! Hell i may even do one myself. who's with me?
william dechant such Hawks such hounds
Love seeing Al just jam on his bass.
Never heard of this and my weed smoking days are long gone, but anything coupling lungsman and hasheeshian deserves massive respect.
Dopesmoker's riff should never end! NEVA!
Where can I buy this Documentary?
This isn't a sleep documentary, it's a clip from the full length doc "Such Hawks, Such Hounds"
11 youtubers need a bong.
CarnageTV 19 now

From Such Hawks Such Hounds. Great Doc. Probably still posted here on youtube.
It's funny to hear Al's "speaking voice" after listening to his vocals on Jerusalem/Dopesmoker.
His vocals are way gruffer than his talking voice.
3:55 "We spent the money on *sniff* all sorts of stuff." LOL
Do the math!
love the such hawks such hound documantary! when i first saw it I could not stop watching some of the scenes, like the pentagram interwiev in the beginning, and the sleep and kyuss parts! everything is cool about that movie. yesterday i also watched the obsessed documantay from '94, and really love that one too.
am really glad their existis movies like this
The lady put it best in the beginning, “Red, green, blue, Sleep.”
Take as needed for pain.
***** I know but Earache was also probably tripping on the fact its not grindcore ha ha
Man fuck grindcore xD
+dyr234 fuck u
+daybreaK no fuck you thats why you into it now
In about 3 hours I'm seeing SLEEP at the Gothic. I'm so fucking stoked.
Dopesmoker is my favorite song ever. I will play it 100% through every time
"red, green, blue, Sleep"… umm what?
+Troy McIver she's saying it's elemental, maaaaaan. like earth, wind, water, SLEEP
ahhhh makes sense… how you phrased it not her hahaha
Hahahahhahahahaha
2:09 the truth!
Dragonaut, the opening song off of Holy Mountain. Put it in your face, sir.
@KvSwooo The bass does take over a little bit of the fuzziness on Dopesmoker. Jerusalem has a treblier EQ, which kinda lets the fuzz out. It's weird, I experience the same when I push the low end on my Orange and cut out all the treble.

Saw them live in glasgow. So heavy it felt like a fat person was sitting on your chest... in a good way...
Yummee
Jason is an awesome drummer, but Chris was a HUGE part of Sleep's sound.
best songs to stone to.
what the fuck how am i just seeing this now!?
i just saw Sleep in January :P one of the best shows i've seen, obviously. i just saw Black Sabbath last month as well though, and Electric Wizard and Om the previous year. each of these performances were the best thing ever on their own, i can't say any of them were 'better'
awesome
who knew the market for bridges had grown so massive

Thanks for the upload!
''sometimes a riff is so fuckin' good, you just want to hear it over and over and over again, like for 52 minutes..''
so basically each head runs into a power head? Pretty groovy
3:49 because you only live once, but your artwork lives forever, and money is a meaningless construct which is useless in death
theyre running a few it takes alot of power to drive two 4x15 bass cabs
They used to play slaved amps.
And then you realize the Melvins did Lysol in 1992 and Hung Bunny is basically the birth of the entire genre. How the hell does Buzz do it?!
+Teutone Go listen to Stillborn by Sleep off of their debut Volume One released in 1991 and then come back to me and say the Melvins and Hung Bunny birthed the genre. In fact part of the song is playing in the background to this clip.
+Teutone he is from SPAAAAACE
Buzz didn’t - Joe Preston did. He was doing drone stuff, joined the Melvins, and then you get Lysol. Joe Preston’ has said that Earth influenced Buzz and Lysol, but that Buzz won’t admit it.
I went to junior high/high school with them and hung out with them sometimes, really cool buncha guys. Man, those were the daze...
I love Sleep but I really wish they kind of stuck to the Holy Mountain vibe. Now they sound like OM featuring Matt Pike.
I played the whole thing on Isles FM 103.
holy shit this is amazing. i want to watch this whole documentary
the custom made amps now reside in the 'where are they now?' file
What is the name of the song thats on in the start of this!?
what song is the one that sounds just at the begining?
5 people are London Record execs
the start of something amazing
@otusqueeky1 Jerusalem isnt fuzzier because of lack of bass, i believe it has to do with different compression techniques
@shevo11 Dragonaut from Sleep's Holy Mountain unless you're talking about that riff during the first 45 seconds of dialog. That, I have no idea.
Totally righteous! I couldnt agree more about the whole transient part of playing this music, I could sit for hours with a massive bong and my bass cranked to 11 and fuzzed to shit, so peaceful!
Orange,Green, Laney, Sleep
These guys are so chill, I'd love to hang out with them.
this is a great doc
Those were the custom ones that Matt and Al got made for them. Now Matt uses a Soldano as a preamp.
Maybe my soulmate is just dopesmoker
@eatthemoon13 i thought matt used the matamp green and NOT the greenamp by electric amp
song at 0:18 ?
+Rhinestone tiger in a leisure suit Stillborn by Sleep off of their debut Volume One released in 1991
can some one explain green apms to me? each head controls separate aspects of amplification? you can't just use one head?
Carlitos Padilla they use multiple slave power amp units
Live @ Roadburn this week, going to be awesome :D
i think it's bhima's theme as well, but the tuning seems different
Fuck me, 75k for amps + guitars. Those green.....Worth it x1000!
Holy mountain will always be quintessential to me as one of the best"next generation"stoner/doom bands(besides obviously Black Sabbath)... The only album that even comes close is"Kyuss-Welcome to Sky Valley"IMO...
lovin' the nasa patch at 1:57
I met Matt before the first Sleep show in SF on 9-12...I was the only 14 yo there. Where can i get those Green amps, they still make em?
Can someone please write a sci fi novel about all the sleep fanatasy/lore including the sciences? It would be much appreciated
its sounds like rain's baptism to me but don't quote me on it
@MrJehosefat Yes, it mentioned on the description box.
Why, from the green amp store, of course.
Anybody know where I can watch this online? PM me plz.

Sleep...thank you.
I didn’t make it through. I actually went to SLEEP
So stoned right now.
Longest songs shortest…
compressive rwakcumenties
saw em in the day
red, green, blue, Sleep.
i used to hang out with matt pike lllol
Fuck yes, let's slip Sabbath in there for good measure.
The thumbnail should be an orange amp
@ultron35186 Thanks!
I pride myself in mowing my front and back yard, weedeating, and leaf blowing the driveway. Before dopesmoker ends.
Always annoys me that it is rarely mentioned how derivative from early melvins riffs all this stuff is. Which is not to say that it isn't, or can't be good in it's own right, but the similarity and influence is not open to argument.
Yeah right, I mean you only have to listen to lysol to see that. Dopesmoker before dopesmoker was a thing
Dude with the dreads is by far the one of the weirdest dudes, hands down
Can one drown in their own drainage? 🏂
If there hadn't been Black Sabbath Master of Reality and Vol. IV...
What does Red Green Blue Sleep even mean?
Saw Sleep last night in Oakland. My god it was fucking massive.
FUCKING MASSIVE!
