We’ve featured loud rigs. We’ve stood strong in front of Matt Pike’s octet of Oranges, been washed over with waves of volume from Angus Young’s nine Marshalls for AC/DC’s “small gig setup” in an arena, trembled from J Mascis’ three plexi full stacks, and even withstood Bonamassa’s barrage of seven amps at the Ryman, but nothing prepared us or compared to the Godzilla-rising-from-the-Pacific roar that is Sunn O)))’s auditory artillery. And it’s more than the sheer sight of 14 amps and 16 cabs or the dishing of deafening decibels; it’s the interplay of these characters and their conductors.
“The third member of the band is the amplifiers!” laughed Greg Anderson in a 2014 interview with PG. “We use vintage Sunn Model Ts from the early ’70s. They’re a crucial part of the show. I’ve got more amps than I have guitars.”
Stephen O’Malley takes a more metaphysical outlook to the connection between him and the thundering Model Ts. “My philosophy is that I’m just part of this bigger circuit of the instrumentation,” he says. “You have, of course, the amplifier valves, the speaker, effects pedals acting like different and various voltage filters, the air in the room, and the feedback generated from all this equipment, so who’s in the band is immaterial.”
We learned more about O’Malley’s perspective when, following a 90-minute drive southeast from Nashville to Pelham, Tennessee, and a short descent into The Caverns, the Sunn O))) guitar tag team welcomed PG’s Chris Kies onstage for an amplifying chat. O’Malley details his signature Travis Bean Designs SOMA 1000A, while Anderson explains how a broken guitar led him to his beloved Les Paul goldtop. Both pay homage and reverence to the eight Sunn Model Ts that form the band’s foundational tonal force, and explain why the LM308-chip Rat influenced their Life Pedal collaboration with EarthQuaker Devices.

oh man iv been waiting for this one for a long time!
Great Rig rundown, but I would have appreciated a rundown of everyones favorite earplugs.
Calling it now, this will be the most watched Rig Rundown in a year.
I’m gonna bet the Julian Lage rundown in 5 days will do better, but we’ll see. Both will rule!
Yes...no doubt anyone with no brain-cells will love this.
@@Flametopology why are you so angry about this band man, already second comment at least I’ve seen on this video…why wouldn’t you just not click on video if you don’t like the band/music? Genuinely fascinated by people that must see a video pop up that they are not going to like but feel the need to click on it and let everyone know how presumably dumb etc, they must be for liking it… you have to understand how mental that is? Surely….
@@Flametopology Sure buddy, whatever you need to tell yourself to keep going... think we all figured out where all that bitterness comes from 😉 good luck
@@Flametopologypfp checks out
Seeing Sunn live.....there is no comparison to anything else you've ever seen. You don't hear this band, you feel it, in your head, your chest, the sound pressures are immense. I'm pretty sure they rearranged my DNA.
Absolutely man. You simply cannot fully appreciate them until you've seen them live. I saw them in Brooklyn and was fortunate enough to be standing almost directly in front of Greg, with my hand on the stage. I could feel it oscillating. The most incredible performance I've ever seen
Absolutely the loudest band period!
I was way at the back of an abandoned power plant & they were so loud! I was really sorry for anyone without ear plugs …. Seen many shows and that was the only I’ve worn plugs
the earplugs literally don't work lol
I saw them about 10 yrs ago. I started off on the right side of the venue and was slowly shuffled to the left by shows end. You literally feel and can almost taste the sound.
100%. I have pics of people muffing their ears, clutching their heads. It's an out of body experience.
There is no way the speakers you listened to this rundown on can convey even a tiny fraction of the sheer pressure this band puts out. This show is an experience that is unique to them, jet engines at full throttle and a good sized volcanic eruption. It will literally vibrate the fluid in your fucking eyeballs. Your eyes will flutter, no lie. Your chest will literally resonate with different frequencies. Hold your water bottle up and look at the ripples. It's not pain per se, it's an immense primal roar, a primordial pounding of throbbing soundwaves that reduce grown adults down to quivering puddles of vibrating jello 'cuz that's all we really are when you get down to it. Human sludge baby!
What an awesome description!
Enjoy tinnitus !
@@DavidOakesMusic What ?
@@DavidOakesMusic I already do
a sonic waterfall bath!
Never expected to see a Sunn rig rundown, but I'm damn glad it happened. Hell, I can kind of credit Sunn for starting to play guitar myself after seeing them twice. That sheer fucking power of amplification was just awe-inspiring. Probably not the traditional idea of guitar heroes but I love what Greg and Stephen are doing and to see them run down their rigs in such detail is a special treat.
absolutely, been a fan for 20 years and this makes me very happy to see, Greg and Steve are top blokes for sure
off-topic: Steve called me an asswipe once, on the old Southernlord forum :) I cherish that greatly lmfao
That story of him finding that first model T is beautiful. That kind of find will keep you searching for life.
It's like the whole Rig Rundown project has been leading up to this.
Seeing Sunn live is like going to amp/tone church. It felt almost like a ritual. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced
Saw them maybe 15 years ago or so at this tiny little venue. Cabs stacked floor to ceiling and wall to wall. Eagle twin opened. Was the loudest thing ive ever heard and felt. The whole room vibrated with the music. Absolutely incredible experience that is cemented in my memory for life and really opened my eyes to the true PHYSICALITY of music.
Love that he name dropped members of Throbbing Gristle and Pan Sonic. The guitar heads don't even know.
Exactly! He’s got a great collaborative album with Mika V
This comment section is comically hipster.
@@allthewaylive8665 maybe you’ll learn about being cool
@@allthewaylive8665 i see a lot of people throwing that term around nowadays when they encounter something they don’t know anything about, as if defending their ignorance
"Oh so do they sound like Pink Floyd then? Or more like Dream Theater?" Ha ha ha🤣
Amazing. Rig Rundowns went from a UA-cam oddity for geeks into a must do for major cats like these.
Right? It’s a nice break from the same repetitive “heres me Les Paul Marshall Mesa boogie with 10010101 digital pedalboard” vids.
Much respect for including the lighting designer! Their contributions to the live music experience are so vital and even more, more, more so with a band like Sunn O))).
One of the best and most transformative live shows I've ever experienced.
Were you at the Caverns too?
@@daveapple205saw them in Jax FL amazingly enough. I wish I had seen them in a cave, though
Was at the Caverns show. Absolutely unreal performance and I’ve been waiting for this video ever since I found out Premier Guitar was at the venue that night too. So awesome
Glad you enjoyed it! Say “Hi” next time!
Stephen and Greg seem like really nice people which makes Sunn O))) even more enjoyable to listen to.
They are both totally approachable and just as geeky about what they do as you'd want them to be.
75% certain Greg and I were junior high chums in 7th grade. 1982-83 school year.
Bruh said "Sun Oh"
My favourite rundown so far. I experienced Sunn at a small church in Toronto many moons ago and it was HEAVY. More like a group ritual than a concert.
You mean many Sunns ago
@@Grunger19 nice one ;-)
Very very correct. They are not intending to be a "concert" experience. It's to feel your spinal fluid vibrate in a manner that induces transcendental ecstasy.
Fuckin LOVE the absolute ROCK n roll attitude with the amps.
Reminds me of why I fell in love with rock music and the amazing guitar players that inspired me.
Now we just need a Rig Rundown of Boris and Iron Maiden.
Earthquaker Devices does a rig rundown of Wata, but only her
and Om
@@michaeldoerksen2841 They've done one of Takeshi too.
@@waynetowers5046 OK, I couldn't honestly remember
@@atommoor i wish they did one in like 2007 when Al had the huge Electric cabs and amps.
Imagine if they were just like - we don't actually use these amps, we're 100% Line 6 now.
ironically one of their inspirations and friends, Dylan Carlson of the band Earth, has switched from using massive stacks of cabs to using much smaller, often solid state amps. I saw both Sunn O))) and Earth perform live and they're both fantastic
Their live show is like being underwater for 2 hours. Its like that Bojack episode. Unlike any other band's live set. Its meditation.
I love that SoMA is all about the fine details of his equipment. Where as Greg is just bare bones rocker. Great contrast, great band
Could've been twice as long (or even more!) and I'd still love every second of it! 🖤
🔈🔉🔊
Just play it at half speed. becomes a sick doom track
Totally, I want to know everything
This is incredible. Yes.
Sunn 0))) is to sonic art what James Turrell is to the art of light; creating immersive installations in sound and light (including the sun), respectively, to experience all of their phenomena in an atmosphere.
Two of the most memorable gigs I have been to were a Sunn show in Melbourne, where they had Atilla doing vocals and someone playing trombone. As well as a show where O'Malley played with Keiji Haino. It is good to see more people enjoying the concept, it really doesn't make sense until you have been to the live show and experienced the sound that way.
Sunn O))) vs. the integrity of the Earth’s crust 😳
Seeing 'em live is the musical equivalent of a Turkish massage. You get beaten and battered but float out of the venue feeling better than you've ever felt before!
Closest thing to a religious experience I've ever had.
The rig rundown we've all been waiting for. THANK YOU! On a side note, had the pleasure to watch them years back and actually got to hang with both Stephen and Greg afterwards. Super cool guys and signed the CDs I just picked up
Glad to see people still using actual amps.
My favorite rig rundown so far!
THIS is the rig rundown I’ve been waiting for. I saw em live in Atlanta a month ago and they were every bit as amazing as you’ve heard
Thank you! Dream Rig Rundown for me, been waiting for this since I discovered PG in 2015.
THIS is the rundown I’ve been waiting for!
Thank you Stephen O' Malley, Greg Anderson, Chris Kies and Premier Guitar.
Our pleasure!
I love how she mentioned the crowd being "in their own little world" because that's exactly what it is. I took a look around the room when I saw them and everyone was just completely engrossed in the performance. I've never seen a crowd so focused like that, absolutely wild
I didn’t think this would ever happen! Great work PG 🙌🏻
Couldn't click this video fast enough. The sound at that show must have been unimaginable.
Love to see they've developed more speed over the years!
The loudest show I've ever been to. Set the fire alarms off at Chicago's Thalia Hall twice during their set.
It was much more than twice. I have a friend who works there and apparently they had people constantly fanning the smoke detectors with folders and whatever they could find to keep them from going off.
Not to mention the vibrations were literally rattling the ceiling so hard that small pieces of it were raining down on the audience.
Truly have never experienced anything else like it.
I’ve been waiting for this for years!
I was doing a deep dive on Greg's sound a day or two ago because I'm obsessed (pun intended) with his tone on each of the Goatsnake albums and, of course, stumbled upon this. Didn't even bother looking at the release date and simply bookmarked it for reference. Cannot believe I was doing that research the day this came out...I think the universe is trying to tell me to invest all my life savings in copying his setup.
1:49 "Here is my..."
19:55 "clean tone."
Saw these guys in Birmingham UK.
I didn't know what to expect..
Mind crushing volume. A sense they where changing the axis of the planet.
It's not like watching any other bad.
Utterly amazing 👍😃🤘😎
Dying for them to come back here! I NEED to see them! 🤘
Always nice to see a mention for Bright Onion. Great and great value gear.
Yall killed it with this. PLEASE do a Jucifer rundown sometime. Only band I know of that's even comparable in regards to the sheer DBs they crank out. When they played here you could hear them from 5 blocks away and every inch of the floor inside the club (and some spots in the parking lot!) were vibrating.
Hell yes! I’ve been hoping and waiting for this to happen. Thank you guys and SUNN O))) for doing this. The addition of the Fog as an additional character was superb! I cannot imagine what it must be like to experience this band live. The sheer power of the music and the experience must be something else.
Our pleasure!
I’ve been waiting for this since forever!
Thank you so much. You deliver the goods (at insanely high volume)
Love it! Long overdue rundown!
I can’t believe they’re finally on here but I was only expecting it to be 5 minutes long lol. Thanks guys!
I've had Travis Bean's since 1975! Great guitars!!
That show in Pelham was one of the best shows I've ever witnessed. A true experience.
Saw them in Chicago the Monday after Easter in a cathedral and I sat front row maybe 10 feet from this rig and it was absolutely beautiful
Thanks PG
This is amazing thank you
Everything I've ever wanted. Thank you
Just Awesome. One of the ones I really wanted to see, and really hoped you'd do. Amazing! Thanks.
Glad you liked it!
holy crap. great job chris. fantastic episode
Anybody wanna start a Sunn tribute band where we only use solidstate Crates? Crate [ ]
Thank you Premier Guitar! Brilliant.
Glad you like it!
Hmmm. Definitely an acquired taste, I guess. These rigs are like a deafness machine…
Interesting group. Thanks for sharing it!
Get their "Lifemetal" album. That's a good one for new listeners. It will grow on you. I turn it on real loud and do housework and stuff. lol. If you still don't like it after hearing it a few times, you can use it to rid your house of guests that have overstayed their welcome.
@@daveapple205 hahaha! Might have to do that
it's the difference tween a delicious meal and a roller coaster.
you don't go on a roller coaster for the great food!
You need to be in the SAME ROOM as SUNN O)))) cuz you must FEEL the richness and power of the REAL SOUND with your naked ears!
ANALOGY: on most albums in history......the GONG sounds like a trash can lid! The reason is that GONGS are more powerful than any recording devices and speakers. You literally CANNOT CAPTURE the sound of a gong that is in the room with you..... via any recording methods or equipment. TOO many frequencies and dynamics and POWER.
THANKS GUYS!
Been waiting for this one for awhile . Killer video .
Hell yes….loud amps, killer music and Chris Kies 🙌
This is the coolest Rundown, not even close. It’s crazy they have a whole second set backline line in Europe…that’s by my rough math a quarter of a $ million in guitar gears, swoon
Quick end to the movie:
"So, we're running kempers..."
I saw them live last night, one of the most incredible live performances I've ever seen. The way they use sound is unlike any other band, not just the volume but the weight of every pitch and riff. Everything in the show is significant and it gives you time to listen to the interactions between the two guitars with beatings and smoothness from different consonances and dissonances. The way they interact as performers too creates an environment where you can feel the humanness of what they're doing. It creates a deeper connection with the individual moments. The performance didn't feel like time was passing but more like a massive sense of scale, like looking at a Rothko painting and taking in the massive wall of color.
Stephen seems like the kind of guy you'd smoke one joint with and before you know it you're discussing the deepest aspects of the way vibrations affect the spirit and what different colours of light taste like.
Hint: they don't
holy shit weve finally been blessed with this im so hyped
oh man iv been waiting for this one for a long time!
Ultra mad props👌 for mentioning Peter (sleazy) Christoperson of coil and throbbing gristle he is greatly missed 😔🙏 rest in peace John Peter 🙏✌️
You guys finally did it!! 😀
that band at that venue.
perfect.
I'm surprised they're not using more effects on top of their wall of sound distortion. I imagine kicking on a phaser mid chord would just vibrate everyone's brain into mush
Trust your brains are already vibrated to mush as it is lol
I read a lot of people assume there's a bunch of reverb in their sound. And I don't get why, reverb would completely choke the character of the distortion out of the sound. All of the phaser-ish sound moments are just superdry overamplified frequencies interacting with each-other (might be interesting to find out what exactly Greg means with the out-of-phase amp heads and what that sounds like). But that's the beauty of it, depending on the acoustincs of the venue where they're playing, the frequencies will behave differently and become unpredictable, but you can never really hear the natural reverb that you expect from any concert hall, it's just the amplification is so loud that it's like you're closely surrounded by material sound, when you're in the middle of it, you can feel the soundwave textures folding against your body.
@@madkorova You get destructive interference from two amps out of phase with each other.
@@greygoo2019and frequency cancellation, so less volume and missing notes
@@loganbrown9845 you mean like out-of-phase pickups? Do amps word the same way?
had no idea Greg was such a funny guy, like that uncle in barbeques
The only question that I think was missed is… what do they use for hearing protection??
Oooooooooooh..... amazing 🤘🎸🙏🚀🪐
Desde Valencia-España...un cordial saludo 🙏
Sunn O))) is the perfect example of a band where the studio albums, as brilliant as they are, are merely a taster for the ultimate expression of their sonic wizardry - the live experience. Nothing compares to it. A transcendental experience, have caught them live twice so far and can only hope to see them live a few more times in the future.
There live shows was trash check my page I took a video. I respect them but trash
Truth . Sunn O))) has to be experienced to be truly experienced
@@DanielGee420 no offense but you look and talk like you have a traumatic brain injury so I can understand why you wouldn't enjoy music like Sunn O)))
@@nicknickson3650 Don't know how my face has to do with Sun. Don't hate
@@DanielGee420 "don't hate" you started it by hating on the band, don't dish it out if you can't take it
Loudest band I’ve ever seen. Truly insane
Sunn "OH!" Fair play. Some really genuine interviews from the crew - they're all rad folk. Can't wait to ride what these sonic juggernauts construct, yet again...
So you are telling me that Sunn O they still using amps? I thought they were using portals to hell to get those tones
dude i saw. many portals. opening at sunn gigs..my mate. started flipping and shouting. omg. ufo landing....at the last destroyed. gig venue they played. in 2020 was BRUTAL

Finally! Thank you!
I don't really understand the appeal of this band but I think it's cool that they have the following they do with their sound. The gear they use is also cool
Go see them live. It will physically shake you to your core. The pressure is like being crushed in a mosh, but from the inside lol.
Good call on the fog rundown!
Just ordered a Life V3. Stoked to see what all I can do with it seeing how versatile they seem to be
I was at this show. Insane experience.
I was at this show in the cave! Epic as hell!
very nice!!! So cool to watch
Primitive Man's Ethan McCarthy, Cattle Decapitation's Josh Elmore, Artificial Brain. Please I'm begging you PG!!! More Xtreme metal rigs

It's so funny the little intro with the music when juxtaposed against Sunn o))) 😂
WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO.😀
The new EQ sunn o life pedal is pretty cool and fun, I’ve been enjoying it a lot.
How did I miss this two weeks ago?!? Don’t know but Hell Yeah!!! 🤘👽👽👽
Caught Sunno))) at all tomorrows parties festival. They had two sets, the first on opening night and were onstage at 4:30am. The main room was quite empty as they came out and I sat back on a chair. Their volume made my chair vibrate so much my chair began to move as it shook across the floor. People ran out to puke from the incredible resonating frequencies of their guitars. I was ruined from a head full of ketamine and alcohol and can hand on heart say it was one of the most life affirming experiences of my life.
You guys need to do Bell Witch next.
I never believed this would ever happen. I'm watching it and still cannot believe it.
