What is Stoner Rock? Feat. Sleep, Black Sabbath, Bongzilla, Kyuss & More

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 9 жов 2019
  • Christina Rowatt alongside Bongzilla's Mike Makela talks to bands including Black Sabbath, Kyuss, Down, Monster Magnet and Sleep (with a brief guest appearance from Geezer Butler and Ronnie James Dio) about what stoner rock means, where it came from and what is special about the people who love it and make it.
The bastard child of stolen Seventies music, stoner rock arose in the Nineties via many of these artists. As we approach the Roaring Twenties, stoner rock has continued its slow burn world takeover.
The global love is unsurprising. Stoner rock's dirty, fuzzed out, downtuned, heartfelt yet visceral sound is the perfect antidote to the artificial and soulless pop blared at us every day. The focus on truth in song also draws a certain kind of human. Edited, produced and hosted by Christina Rowatt.

Obviously Sabbath is the band that started it all. I was a teenager in the 1980s. The first time I ever heard Kyuss,I totally lost my shit. Once I did my research. I find out he's playing a mid-70's "Ovation"neck through body electric, and he's using a bass cabinet for the guitars. The first time that I heard "Blues for The Red Sun"(I was never a very big fan of "Wretch")... I can't even put into words how I felt the first time I heard them. It's like everything that I ever wanted to hear in a band was right there in front of me on that record.Josh's rhythm playing on "Blues for The Red sun" and the follow-up records, has basically defined the way that I play rhythm guitar (and I too now use a two 12 bass cabinet with a slant). I have been a stoner metal freak since I was 14 years old and I'm 46 now. Sleep's holy mountain... Jerusalem comes in second place in my opinion.

Colten Stolarski I agree, there is a difference between stoner rock and stoner metal though, even though they are used interchangeably, stoner rock for me is very early heavy metal/heavy psychedelic like early Sabbath, early Pentagram and Blue Cheer. Whilst stoner metal is a mix of doom and psych, basically a more modern, heavier, more distorted version of stoner rock.

    • @imgoodbye9252
      @imgoodbye9252 4 роки тому +4

Rising Sun I agree. Like, Queens of The Stone Age, Cky, Clutch, maybe even Kyuss are stoner rock whereas Stoner metal, is much slower, like sleep, electric wizard, and many others

Colten Stolarski Yeah exactly, although Kyuss did a bit of both, like demon cleaner is definitely a stoner rock song, but stuff like green machine and gardenia are undeniably metal songs.

When I first started playing guitar back in the 90s I play3d similar music because I didn't have good equipment but I loved the way it sounded with deep bass in my guitar and didn't realize until I tried to jam with my friends band that I was tuned to B. They tried to tune down to match my songs but their strings were too loose to even play lmao. Then I heard Kyuss Demon Cleaner and it blew my mind because it was what I was doing but tuned a bit higher. I thought, cool, I'm not crazy to play th8s way because others are doing it too and it sounds so wild!

@Gene Bone I had that same opinion about Sleep once, but this is a surface understanding of the band. The Sabbath influence is clear, yes, but they really do go beyond that. The compositions are unorthodox, the instrumentation is great, with each member having their own personal style, the riffs and progressions are something else too. It's a fucking great band to jam along really, their reputation is not for nothing. And, to add even more, their overlooked debut is a sludge metal masterpiece.
OM is an easier band to get along, simply because they are obviously fantastic in their own right! Very unique sound - I wouldn't really compare much them with Kyuss - they have their very own "spiritual doom metal" or something like it. I can totally understand the preference for them, but don't overlook Sleep, at least remember that OM is 2/3 Sleep hehe
I'm curious to know if you will change your opinion in the future. Comment here again in five years and tell me hahaha

@Gene Bone Now you're telling nonsense. Amos is flashier than Hakius, but not better. They have different styles, and, honestly, the more toned down hypnotic style of Hakius suits better the band's premisse. And you're high if you really think that Emil Amos is the greatest drummer on earth. I like him, of course, but that's a crazy statement.
OM was truly great since the beginning, or, at least, since Conference of the Birds, with At Giza still being one of their greatest tunes until this day. But if you think they became truly great only since God is Good, it's certainly less because of Amos e more because of Robert Lowe and company, who had a bigger impact in the band's sound.
If what you said about Sleep was true, the other infinity of bands that use the same drug gimmick would be as legendary as they are. Which, of course, is not true. Again the comparison between Kyuss and OM is shallow, they have similarities, that's all. The whole commentary on the scene doesn't go anywhere.

last year, bongzilla came to visit st. paul (playing with like my favorite local band and like i didn’t know anything beyond their music) so i went to the turf club having a great time im outside in the alley between sets smoking a joint as i do and there’s older dude with big white sideburns and a kinda hoarse voice who makes some conversation so i share some weed cause yknow i’m sharing fella i like meeting strangers and then i go back inside in time for bongzilla and i look up on stage and holy shit that was mike muleboy makela :0
that was also the set where someone passed a joint to him on stage and he put it in his nose so he could play bass, smoke, and scream; what a great fuckin stunt man blew out the roach in a gorgeous shower of sparks

Now...I love sleep but the melvins really don't get enough credit for what they created on lysol with hung bunny you hear that and you instantly think of sleep...but was created 4 years earlier. It was only like 10 minutes or so but it makes you wonder if maybe the guys from sleep heard that and went fuck this is rad.

Very valid point! I would have loved to cover more Melvins in this, just only have people I’ve spoken to who have come to Australia to draw from. it would be super cool to go to America and speak to Buzz and everyone who he’s influenced and make a new video :) thank you!

I enjoy metal with fuzz instead of the tight, EQed to hell distortion that's popular with everything post Metallica and Pantera. Not that I don't love that sound, but something about a wall of out of control, grinding Big Muff, combined with low tunings and slow, behind the beat riffs Sabbath style is just lovely. I'm a fan of Sunn 0))) too, and that whole doom and drone thing. I love music that creates an atmosphere.

There's a phenomenal stoner rock band called Sasquatch. As far as I know, they released only two albums. Do yourselves a favor and listen to them. There's a song called Chemical Lady. It's a furious kick in the balls.

Love bands like Witchfinder General, Cathedral, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Trouble, Candlemass, etc, in addition to the bands profiled here. This was a fun video. My band Heavy Stoned (from Houston, Texas) is originally based on songs like "Sweet Leaf" and "Iron Man", we evoled into more of a Pantera/Slayer, over the years. Kyuss' "Green Machine" is still a song that sparks the fire to write more of those kind of songs from Black Sabbath.
(How many of us lit one just before scrolling and this was one of the first few videos that came up?)😁

Space Cadet is one I can remember listening to, when I would hang out with the guys that introduced me to their songs. They quickly moved on to another band called Mondo Generater. I didn't get to hear much of that band. None of my other friends where into either of the bands. I was into Ozzy and Sabbath and Pantera, Black Label Society.
