So what causes the mold? I have green mold that pops up from time to time and seemingly out of the blue. I've reduced my water to 10 cups when making coco coir substrate in a 5 gallon bucket.
After some time, taking care of my Golden babies, I was able to see cute, little pins 🥰This was heart warming. Today my hart just broke... They turned blue 🥺😢
Oh, sorry... It's too late now. Because after mild depression and heart shattering into millions of pieces, I shaved about 1cm from the top of the cake and made emergency flush. Two days later I saw one pin, most beautiful thing I've ever seen. It's healthy. Named him "hope". Yeah, I know, bit gay, but whatever 😊
Great. I'm trying the automated method. I get great pin starts, but they stop growing or grow lanky in many directions. Humidy is on target and have fae at 15min every hour. Could this be too much FAE as humidity fluctuates between 80 and 92% during exchange? Or still not enough FAE? Thank you!
My bulk substrate had tiny green mold from the surface and i removed using salt and sanitizer, no more green mold and a healthy flush came out the other side of the bulk (the clean one) and no it doesn't touch any mold at all, so is this flush is edible?
Harvested first flush of mushrooms. Got lots of pins and some small mushrooms so far for second flush, but everything stopped growing. No growth in 3 days. Can't find obvious contamination. Should I harvest the few small ones and rehydrate the cake? This is my first tub, so I am not very experienced.
You're not supposed to let them sporulate. It does not make new mushrooms grow on your substrate. If they're psychoactive you need to harvest before they release spores. If they're normal eating mushrooms then it's fine.
Hi Ashley, what about little fruit flies or fungus gnats. I just noticed a couple in my monotub this morning when I was fanning. Can I still continue to grow or should I throw it out? Can it be controlled? I have some rather large fruiting happening in this tub and its my first time starting to see a good flush. Ill be devastated if I have to throw this one out. :(
I believe my mono just did this. Everything went amazing started seeing pins.!!! Then boom nothing 1 tiny tiny mushroom. Waited a month and nothing finally dumped it today. Believe i seen some lind of mold in the substrate even smelled. Did not even get 1 flush
I have been having that green mold. It usually starts after the second or third flush but the past couple of bins its been there before the pinning starts. i use a 1:4 bleach solution (reccomended by midwest grow supplies) and then i put the bins in my bathroom and use this UVC lamp for 20 minutes. I at first thought the mold was from too much moisture. This may be a dumb question but what is the the green mold from? Also, if there is a better way for sanitation between cycles after the substrate is done im all ears. thank you and i love your videos!
It is very likely trichoderma. It was likely in your tub/substrate/grains before you spawned. Sanitize everything more thoroughly during your process then don't mess with it too much
@@MasoNowa thank you! I bought an Ozone maker and did a much more thorough cleaning during the transfer from grain jars to bins and i am happy to report this strain is on its 3rd flush with no contams!
@Gideon Pioneer ozone generator. It will kill everything living after a few hours in a closed room. I then have a filter set up in front of windows for when I run in open windows, and let fresh air back into room.
I researched trichoderma, it’s common and looks like green/blue mold. It is a fungus. It eats the same nutrients as mushrooms and also can/will eat the mycelium and the mushrooms if it can. Trichoderma mold fungi appeared on top of soil of an all in one grow bag within a couple hours of cutting bag open for FAE (the cut in bag was made over 1 week after pins were visible, so it was technically during fruiting, I guess. According to my research, trichoderma exists in all soils all over the world. Mold on bread is often trichoderma and it is not harmful to humans. You can spray 3% hydrogen peroxide on it as soon as you notice it in order to slow trichoderma spread if it’s just on top layer and you want to allow your mushrooms 72 hours or less to finish fruiting. Also you can use a “torch lighter” and burn the moldy spots on the dirt or mushrooms as soon as you see it. So I used hydrogen peroxide and lighter method and then ate my mushrooms raw and I was fine. I researched and found that trich loves high humidity (as do mushrooms) but trichoderma also likes temperate about 5-10 degrees higher than some shrooms so you can decrease temp a bit to less than 75 or 80 Fahrenheit. If I remember trichoderma thrives in 80degree fahrenheit temp-or higher. Also to prevent trich from the start, wikihow website reccommends try to start soil with mushrooms friendly ph by adding lime to soil. Maybe if you notice a tiny bit starting in tiny spot the you could burn the mild with torch llighter, spray with 3% hydrogen peroxide and maybe put lime mineral or salt on cut edge of soil to make the PH of soil a bit “less friendly” to trichoderma but more friendly to mushroom. Now all this being said, it spreads quickly and can easily contaminate other bins & tubs so if you have a lot of bins & product you’ll want the contaminated one gone or in a separate space from the rest! I read that if you see the green/blue mold of trichoderma then its spores are likely already in the AIR or they will be in the air soon. I’m a beginner not an expert. This is all info I researched online. But I also tried the hydrogen peroxide and torch lighter method with success a few days ago! My crop yield was small and the mushrooms were also literally very tiny . However, I ate the little babies, raw, 3 times. They tasted as usual and were potent! (I found info through google, a website called Double Blind, several UA-cam channels, wikihow, etc. I plan on burying the cake outside in private woods once fruiting/flushes have completed as long as different contamination does not occur~ especially anything dangerous to consume. I am u sure if it’s ok to bury any contaminated cake or if it’s only the trichoderma contamination that’s safe and fine since it already exists in almost every/any garden or outdoor soil. So I have a question I haven’t been able to find an answer to. It’s commonly stated in tutorials to not spray the mycelium directly. I happened to have done so prior to reviewing that fact, and *it seems* as though only after a few days post doing so, that I noticed some green/blueish areas that seemed to correspond to where there was a decent amount of standing water on the mycelium. It doesn’t stink, and after a week minimal (only several) aborts appeared and the mycelium is sort of gathering and slightly thickening around the blue/green areas. The tub doesn’t stink, and the green/blue patches don’t have any spore formation that has occurred over this week, and doesn’t quite resemble the green dusting mold I have dealt with in quite a few GS jars. Prior to this, the surface seemed healthy and white/healthy mostly across. The tub has never stunk at all.. Sorry for such a long story.. but.. could these areas simply be the “bruising” that can occur from direct spraying? I can’t seem to find any descriptions of what this bruising that is referred to in guidance to not directly mist the mycelium. My main complaint here is the mycelium entering fruiting seems to be dramatically stunted. Just looking for some tips on the bruising question and what I might try to get this thing to fruit.. :/ .. I have been misting the sides when dry daily, fanning twice per day, temp fluctuates between 70-78, have fine misted the mycelium and put a good flowing fan on it immediately after for 5-10 min every 2-3 days.. just sorta lost.
Sounds like bruising but just take a q-tip and gently swab the area. If there’s green dust on the swab it’s probably mold. If nothing’s rubbing off then it’s probably bruising. Can’t confirm from personal experience yet, but that’s what I’ve heard from several people.
Hi Ashley. Love your videos because you get to the point and speak clearly (despite your accent). Take the substrate out spread it out on something sterile mist it and mist it mist it and mix use a blow dryer dry it only moist and look for contamination sterilize your tub and start over again 🤷🏽. Seems to be working for me
If the white mycelium has grown together and is solid and white is it mold ?
No, I don't think so. I think that's just mycelium.
@@BoomerShroomer no that's yellowish brown, I do have that now though in the same tub I was talking about in this comment
How long was your actual fruiting period?
About 2 weeks.
Me watching you stir the mold up with your hands: 😱🤯😳
😂
I don't like to assume that this happened with attempted subsequent flushes, so I ask, was this an attempt for a second, third or fourth flush? I've had contam issues with a greater percentage of my tubs when attempting a second flush and I hear some people getting as many as 5 flushes from one tub. I just don't see how. Do you have any videos on rehydration and subsequent flushes? Thanks for your videos
I usually get 2-3 flushes. If I do get more it is just a few mushrooms. This is an old video. I was still learning.
@@BoomerShroomerThat's cool. Was this mold problem during an attempted subsequent flush or was it a first run? Do you have any videos explaining how you get 2-3 flushes? I saw in one of your videos that you mentioned that you have a 25% contamination rate even with all your sanitary protocol. Have you reduced that? I'm fairly new myself. I began absorbing as much info as I could in 2022 and began full throttle in 2023. My biggest problem is trichoderma.
I love your exuberance and that you've already got your own product line... that's pretty cool.
How should your substrate smell when trying to cultivate your mycelium before fruiting?
Really earthy. I think it smells good. lol Anything foal is contamination.
@@BoomerShroomer darn I must have contamination
@@cryptointegrations9854 might be. Too much moisture maybe?
@@BoomerShroomer I think so. Such a learning process. I’ve contaminated two out of two in their substrate. Going to try again here after my current grain spawn fills up with mycelium again. This time I hope it works! Want to harvest some mushrooms 🥰
@@cryptointegrations9854 did you pasteurize the substrate correctly? Can you reach out to me on Instagram with some pics?
Would it be too risky to leave the tubs soaking In bleach for a day to completely disinfect them?
You really don't need to do that. I just spray mine down with 70% isopropyl.
Was that a microgreen growing in one of the tubs? 😊
Yep, that happened to one of my tubs recently lol
How much did it produce when it was in the fruiting conditions?
About 2.5 oz of dried mushrooms per tub. 5 oz total of dried mushrooms. I had like 4 flushes per tub. There were soooo many mushrooms!
@@BoomerShroomer do u use a casing layer of vermiculite? And why? Whats ur preference casing layer or no casing?
@@BoomerShroomer do u think a casing layer acts as defense from contamination?
@@josephdavis8074 maybe but I am really not sure. I just did an experiment without a casing layer and they did very well. I would say if you don’t have to do one then you don’t need to.
@@BoomerShroomer I’ve read a decent amount about it lately and it seems to be an unnecessary step. Lots of people apply pseudoscience to their practices.
Ways to prevent your contamination? high pH, drier conditions, longer pasteurize?
It was pretty wet in the tubs which caused mold to grow.
@@BoomerShroomer Im saying Ive been running into contamination with my bulk subs, been putting a little coffee in there, coco coir, vemiculite, pasteurizing. Tips to avoid contaming with bulk sub?
@@Holypikemanz are you pasteurizing the substrate before you use it?
@@BoomerShroomer yes, Ive been putting the bulk substrate in the oven at 170 for 2 hours (lowest temp), but Ive read some people doing it for 10 hours+. Tips?
@@Holypikemanz I usually add boiling water to my 5 gallon bucket then close it off with a lid and wait 24 hours. Then use it after 24 hours.
If your grains are blue is that contam or brusing just blueish color no green no grey no other colors
Could I use flex seal for a liner?
I don't know what flex seal is?
How do you disinfect your tubs? Soak in bleach?
It’s isopropyl alcohol 70%. I wipe it down several times before.
can i place the contaminated substrate in my flower bed?
does contaminated substrate have any use in a farm??
Thanks
Yes, you could. I throw mine in the back yard.
Ok but what woel happen if you harvest in a contaminated tub
I recommend getting the mushroom out of the tub and then throwing the substrate out. It could contaminate other tubs if you have them.
@@BoomerShroomer so the fruits might be ok to consume after cooking them (button mushrooms )
@@GhostyFox1 yeah they should be okay.
You probobly dont get this enough THANK you so mutch
Hi, I have a cobweb mold happening in my shoebox tubs , though it is producing. Should I let it carry on and get what fruit comes to maturity?
You can try to spray the sub lightly with 70% isopropyl and it might kill the cobweb. I would recommend picking everything and tossing the tub. Could potentially contaminate other tubs.
@@BoomerShroomer Thx!
Hey thanks for the video....so I have two tubs and neither one is fruiting....I think I put too much colonized grain and not enough substrate...is there anything I can do so they fruit...I'm desperately needing help...thanks...oh I have no contamination and they are about 20 days now with fruiting condition...it looks like it has sealed itself over on top...
Can you reach out to me on Instagram and send a pic?
I was wondering if this question was ever answered. I have a similar problem
If you get pools of water after misting take the corner of a paper towel and dry up the heavy water spots. There are some vids out there
Sounds like bruising but just take a q-tip and gently swab the area. If there’s green dust on the swab it’s probably mold. If nothing’s rubbing off then it’s probably bruising. Can’t confirm from personal experience yet, but that’s what I’ve heard from several people.
Thanks
Thanks for watching.
Well your sub was not pasteurized properly because you have some plant growing in it . It also looks way to wet.
The plant was from the spawn bag I purchased. I think it was a milo seed. Also, It was a little wet cause I sprayed it down too much at the end.
@@BoomerShroomer I would suggest pasturing it yourself . Just throw the sealed bag in a slow cooker overnight
The cycle of life. One fungus dies and becomes nutients for others to come. Kinda beautiful, right?
Are you a Sooner fan by chance? BOOMER!?
I would say ur filters are exsessive , mybe use less material that catches unwanted particles ..just my thaughts
Daphne?
Interesting that you got two different types of mold
I know. I think the chocolate mold came from the spawn bag. But I am not sure.
Don’t touch the mould, mycotoxins can be deadly.
Highly unlikely
My mushrooms were thriving then I put the heater to close and killed them
I'm sorry this happened, try again! Happy growing!
bleach/perox...All stated here in two words. But how to prevent this is th question nobody answers.
Sometimes after several flushes you can't prevent mold.
Boomer Shroomer ftw
I like the color of your shirt makes you look more beautiful than you already are !! lol ......

Barehanded handling mold.. your quite the lady
lol all is good
ok
oklahomie!!
Heyy!!
Hi Ashley. Love your videos because you get to the point and speak clearly (despite your accent).
But please don’t say things like, “Throw away your tub.” I had to listen more closely to hear you say that you thoroughly clean the tub and throw away everything INSIDE. I was wondering why you were throwing away perfectly good tubs.
I question this lady's abilities, mainly on the fact of, look how she cut the hole and mounting for that fan on the right.....it does nothing, no air flow.....she cut out the center....where there's no blades or air flow.....and if that's how she builds, imagine how she grows....
Lol....it's clearly working
My what an expert! What is your channel? Oh... you don't have one? Why, your not old enough... at least not mentally?
Can't hear you
This one is hard to hear. Sorry. One of my first videos.
@@BoomerShroomer ohhhh ok ok I get it
