such a haunting message behind this song. the fact it was released after he died too must’ve been terrifying for people listening to the lyrics. this song will always sound like what i imagine a message beyond the grave sounds like to me. it’s not music it’s art
The lyrics begin with routine bites hard and ambitions are low hes making the connection between the detachment from societal standards on the individual and the nihilistic empty soul that is left with nothing. Then the chorus just means "send noods" wtf you mean whats the message? Do you get your shoes tied for you? Its music amd lyrics are imo alway open for interpretation to individual and how the song and lyrics create emotions from the persons experiences through life. The words all have means and its your choice on how YOU relate to them or how they relate to you. It can be defined precisely in the format of the english language or as nuanced as the thoughts and emotions the lyrics create inside of you.
My Dad used to play this constantly during the worst of his depression. It's such a strange feeling, knowing you were practically raised on punk and probably can never rebel.
Has he or you ever heard Joy Division Oven Gloves by Half Man Half Biscuit. I think you'd if not already heard it be interested in it's punk routed nihilistic realistic paying of homage to the late Ian Curtis. 18.5 1980 100&
You've just lost sight of what rebel means. Not all of us have. So you can be a follower or a voyeur..... or a leader if you wanted, put on the old music that sent anti authoritarianism coursing through your body. Put the device down and look around and imagine how glorious it will in flames. Depression is great it gives me freedom to have nothing to live for except everything.
30 plus years and I still get goosebumps every time I hear this and knowing the tragic history of Ian and lack of help when he needed it still haunts me
Care to elaborate? Im new to joy division just found the band by chance and fell in love. I read a bit about how he was addicted and depressed, ended up killing himself but never did a deep dive
My partner of 10 years died 3 months ago, he used to play this all the time twirling me round my tiny kitchen ❤😢 IM so glad the last time I saw him I kissed him n he told me loved me we were both in a rush and I'm just so glad i said it back 😢
I have said it before and will say it again. There has never been a band from top to bottom who were or are as good as Joy Division. From Ian’s poetic lyrics and emotional delivery without sounding melodramatic, to Bernard’s distorted guitar, Stephen’s machine-like drumming, and Peter’s outstanding bass holding it all together. They should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame darnit!
We make the cover of this song with my post-punk band.. Is so deeping and the darkness filled the skies when I heard it! Amazing really.. long live Joy Division and Ian..
Yip busy going through that as we speak, fiancé' walked out on me with my baby girl who is 14 months old now! Hadn't heard this song in a long time and heard it today and it hit me hard
Awesome...every time.....eventually spawned a host of music genres. There hasn't been music of this calibre produced by a British band in quite some time.
NOV 2024 IM EDDIE CUZ DA BRONX. I WAS ON NUMBER 4 TRAIN GOING TO JOB IN MANHATTAN SO I PLAYED THIS SONG AND THIS GIRL IN 20S SAID TO ME WOW NICE SONG N BEATS U KNOW YOUR MUSIC ,SHES JUST LIKE MY SONS 18 THEY HEAR 80S MUSIC ITS THE BEST DECADE EVER IN MUSIC IN HISTORY FROM ROCK TO FREESTYLE TO RAP, NEW WAVE ,TEKNO. IMAGINE IF IAN WAS ALIVE TODAY ALL HIS SONGS WILL HIT 500MILL TO 1 BILLION. NO ONE HAS HIS VOICE HIS STYLE NO ONE.
How I wasn't listening to this back in the day I don't know, being that most of my musical tastes were post-punk, new ways, punk, you get the idea. At least I've discovered this now. The pain in Ian Curtis's voice is haunting. Another one to add the list of musicians I shall call wm"What could have Been". At least we have what we have, and really it just sounds fresh and innovative, over 40 years later
June Tabor and the Oyster Band had the courage to take this timeless classic to a new dimension. Only June Tabor and the Oyster Band could dare match Ian Curtis and Joy Division (Imho of course) . Thank you. Again one genre crossing over in another disguise telling us what we already know but hardly dare speak or live in that consequence. Thanks Ian Curtis and thanks to June Tabor and the Oyster Band. We want to be one and still we look into the reality of being silently torn apart.
The only song I heard from these guys years ago and I recently started getting In to more songs from them so basically just getting into them. And man they're tremendous
There are a few songs by various great musicians and bands that feel like having been played on the radio waves that shoot out from this planet will reverberate through eternity. This is one. Long after our sun has died and our solar system becomes cold and dead, this song will be travelling through the universe, echoing a deep human truth for all eternity.
Eloquently put! You nailed it there. That made me think of the Nirvana unplugged in NY recording of Where did you sleep last night. I know its not an original by the band but i cant think of another song that creates such an almost overwhelming spectrum of emotions. Along with this song. I cant hear it and not feel the darkest sadness and deepest feelings of true love. Mind blowing and heart stopping.
The magic of this Song Is that Is so emotional. Everytime more. Normally when you listen many times a piece It gets worn out. In this case it's the opposite.
Ian Curtis wrote this about his relationship with his wife. So very sad. Saw the movie on tubi last night. The movie was based off his wife’s book about their life together. My heart goes out to his wife and daughter.
I can see both the good (introduceing more people to JD music) but the bad well I'm not sure allot of older songs have gotten reintroduced because of new tik and tv shows
Colbert: you get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? Keanu Reeves: "Love Will Tear Us Apart " I asked myself: Why I've had never heard it before?

It's about a couple who stays together cause it's what they're familiar with so they ignore all the short comings and continue on
One of my top 5 most beautiful, haunting Gen X songs! We were all just.. different.. 50 and still killing it!
Dark, moody, thrilling, powerful, pulsating, and deep. It will never die ❤

OMG...I've been waiting for this since 1980.
I'm an old reggae music nut and I have John Peel to thank for introducing me to this wonderful tune way back.

This song is the best thing ever.🖤
Such a Mood.
This is beautifully presented. Thank you
Much better than the reimagined videos
Nuestro respeto continua tan seco
