I don’t think we’ve ever had a horse like secretariat. He can run on anything he can run for any distance, and he poses for any camera. A gift from God.

As a 12 year old boy I watched him on TV. In 1982 I met him in person at Claiborne Farms. I was the first to reach his pasture. He did EXACTLY what the man describes in the video. He looked at me from across the pasture, ran directly at me and skidded to a stop, then ran the entire fence line and stopped right in front of me. The most intelligent and magnificent horse I will ever meet. I think he was half human. Words and video can't do justice. You have to have met him. Remarkable animal.

I was working at my summer saleperson job when he won the Belmont. People throughout the store stopped and stared at the tv screens. For me, it was a moment in time I will always know where I was. Entranced by a creature who truly was God's chariott.

What's amazing is that Sham's heart was also bigger than normal. Sham gets overshadowed by Secretariat but that horse is also one of the greatest of all time. 1973 saw two great competitors and champions.

I fell in love, with Big Red in 1973. He captured our imagination and our hearts, and I ran with him, stride for stride, through the races of the Triple Crown.
I'm 61 years old, and I still tear up, when he ran away, and left Sham in the Belmont.
"Moving like a tremendous Machine". There will never, will be another like him.
    I love you, Big Red.

Sometimes in my life I am so grateful to be alive when something happens. Being around during Secretariat's reign which will never be equaled is one of them. I am so glad that I have lived in a time where Secretariat was here!!! Most gorgeous, amazing, horse ever.

I am far from a horse racing expert, but I remember Secretariat's Triple Crown run like it was yesterday. I was 15 years old at the time. Who could ever forget the way he obliterated the field at the Belmont? It put an exclamation point to his magnificent career. It was obvious I was watching one of the greatest athletes in history--human or otherwise.

Secretariat was Horse of the Year as a 2yr.old in 1972. Do you know how rare, to unheard of that is? It's even really rare for a 3yr.old to win HOY, but completely unheard of for a 2yr.old to win it. No horse in racing history could have beaten Secretariat in the 73' Belmont Stakes!!! NONE!!! It was, and will remain the single most intimidating performance ever accomplished by a thoroughbred, ever in racing, IMO.

He's running like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE! Belmont time, 2:24. Distance, 1.5 miles. Average speed = 37.5 mph. I think I'll give this horse 5 stars.

It's just too bad no one got to see this horse as a 4-5 yr old. I can only imagine what he might have done then. When you're considered the greatest horse ever and dont even run as a 4-yr old you know you accomplished some impossible things.

  • @822d

Very enjoyable video. Saw Secretariat in 1984 at Claiborne Farm along with Riva Ridge (won two of the TC races in 1972) and others standing at stud. Riva Ridge was a beautiful, outgoing, sweet tempered horse. Secretariat was also an extrovert, a real ham who could quickly detect someone with a camera or a carrot. Yet his bearing had a dignity of "somethingroyal." Glad I got to meet him because his racing was only part of the story. His personality was the other part.

I too, watched him in 1973. I am 68 years old, so I remember it very well at 29 years old. There will never ever be another event that was so great. As far as a horse, no others really even come close. At 1 1/2 miles distance, his time beat the great Man O War by nearly 5 seconds, 2:28 4/5 for Man O War, and 2:24 flat for Secretariat. There will never be another horse so grand.

When I watched the Belmont, all alone in my room at college, I saw the actual presence and the work of God for the first time in my life. I cried as did everyone else on that day. After that, I have never doubted the presence of God and I never will. It was a spiritual revelation shared by all who saw it. The film shows the race, but not the emotional revelation that was present that day. Words are not enough.

it's quite odd.....his greatness so trancended the sport he became an iconic figured that, much like other great athletes, is a testament to the greatest we can be. you get that when you hear Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky. Muhammad Ali....the type of incredible force for that age that no one had ever seen before. Secretariat is a friggin HORSE and we look at him that way, that he represents the greatest. awesome, damn.

The standard of Greatness is in the number of years their accomplishment remains. Let's just remember 1:59 2/5 and 2:24 and know that no horse before of since has broken 2:00 at Churchill Downs (Accept Sham) and no horse has ever run Belmont faster that 2:26. Secretariat did it in 2:24. the distance that two seconds at that speed is something like 13-15 lengths. Secretariat lives in the presence of the God's.

thanks, cf It's late, but somehow fact that alysheba has this NEED to bring Secretariat down seems so clear. He deserves the high praise. To think he'd not only win the Triple Crown for 1st time in 25 yrs, but set records in all three races, not maybe, one, not two, but ALL THREE, all on his own except for 2 whacks in KD stretch, & other world & track records he set. As Nack said if he'd run at 4 "he wld have carried the proverbial refrigerator on his back, how about 1 1/4 in 1:56 4/5?" he said

So long as we're fact-checking, they didn't just whiff in inaccurately crediting him with negative splitting in the Belmont instead of the Derby.
To wit, from 4:57 : "...but to become the first horse in 22 years to win the Triple Crown, he would have to..."
Oh dear. Of course, it was in fact exactly a quarter of a century since Citation last won it in '48.

What a magnificent animal that left a lasting legacy. Even now, nearly forty years after his accomplishment, his ability continues through his daughter, Terlingua, to her infamous son, Storm Cat.
I wait with bated breath for the movie, but worry that like so many horse stories, it will be butchered to suit an audience that has little true grasp of equine reality. I will hold out hope though.

Secretariat's Belmont was phenomenal, but it was the Kentucky Derby, NOT the Belmont, in which he ran each quarter faster. I suspect
the error is a matter of poor editing.
Secretariat ran the first 6 furlongs (the first half of the Belmont)in 1:09 4/5. Doubled, that would be 2:19 3/4! In reality, he ran the 12 furlongs of the Belmont in 2:24, a world record on dirt. His split time for 1 1/4 miles in the Belmont was 1:59 -- he ran his final quarter in 25 seconds flat. He was slowing down.
