I remember Secretariat with that checker blue and white saying who is that horse. Not knowing he would end up being someone you would never forget. Happy Anniversary BIG RED
1981, my 4 daughters, and I visited Cliaborne Farm during a vacation trip to FL and had the honor of meeting Secretariat live in-person. Two weeks later we visited again during the trip home. Secretariat perked right up. I asked his caretaker if Secretariat actually remembered us, mostly my daughters. He said that Secretariat was highly intelligent and remembered everybody. The caretaker gave each of my 4 daughters an aluminum horseshoe that Secretariat had once used. My 4 daughters still have those horseshoes today and a bunch of photographs from both of those visits.
How is it that after watching Secretariat win the Belmont well over a 100 times I still get goosebumps and choke up. I never tire of watching him win the triple crown races. This magnificent horse seems to touch all of us and stir our emotions. It’s incredible that 50 years later people are still moved by Secretariat. He will never be forgotten. I watch the recent triple crown races and a couple of horses have won the TC in recent years. I respect them but they don’t have the emotional impact on me that Secretariat did. It’s not their fault. I don’t think any horse will ever mean so much to the people in the country as he did. It’s also astonishing that fifty years later his track records still hold up. It’s said that all records are made to be broken. I generally agree with that theory but not in this case. The Belmont was a supernatural performance. Today’s modern day horses can’t even sniff at his time of 2:24 flat. They’re usually around three seconds slower which is approximately 20 lengths in distance and these horses are the best of what today can offer. It was the greatest sports accomplishment in history by the greatest athlete in history. There will never be another Secretariat!!
Secretariat touched people’s hearts. We all fell in love that spring and summer with a super horse, Secretariat. A handsome specimen that could never be matched in the field or on the track, Big Red! He was breathtaking. There will never be another Secretariat!

My God what an honor for you to have been there! I was 13 that summer, a horse crazy girl….. crazy for Secretariat. What a gift he was to those of us alive to see him run. His videos still bring tears to my eyes. He died way too young, and will be missed forever. His records stand untouched as testament to how amazing he was! After all these years he is still missed by so many🌹🙏🏻
Ms. Chenery said they were "anxious times". Having been there I must agree. The more films I watch and books I read about Red, the more I see that all the people around him were wholesome, caring folks. Can't say I know much about the people raising and racing other horses, but I still feel the calmness all of Red's people displayed those 2 years he raced. One and all when they spoke to the media they were low keyed and conscious of how people needed to feel some calm from some direction. And Red was different in that he was nice to other horses, other handlers, even the fans who were at the Preakness and could have ruined the race hanging over the rail! We sure need someone to some how give us that kind of calm today. It would help us remember we are friends from coast to coast and grace and courtesy are what we owe our fellow citizens. Anxious times indeed.
Secretariat did have some wonderful owners and people taking good care of him. I have read where some people say the owners treat their horses bad and run them in the ground for money. His were not like that and it's horrible he got that hoof problem. He would have lived a whole lot longer!
Who's watching this in 2021? one of the unsaid amazing things that show how much better he was then any other horse is that Ron Turcott did not need to use the whip to get Secretariat going. Sham was constantly being whipped by his jockey but could not stay with him. And Sham was a great horse.

Mike Rodriguez-- Onion got his ass kicked by Sec. Those horses were slower and in fact he holds the record for the Derby,Preakness and Belmont. Those horses had to be beaten to win and pumped full of drugs. Secretariat is the only horse in the world that can be ridden and set records drug free and not be beaten down by painful whipping. Nice try though.
Ha ha ha-You`re thinking of Kelso-24 lashes--Onion-22 and broke the skin--the announcer clearly said-the whip is put away-moron you don`t know what that means
+Mike Rodriguez Hey Mikey. How much did Onion beat Big Red by? 2 parts of a length was it????Red with crap running down his legs. Then in the MARLBORO CUP what happened to Onion when Riva Ridge and Secretariat buried Onion???? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
+Mike Rodriguez Hey Mikey I think the drugs are way stronger now at least the ones you are on. No HORSE EVER on dirt has gone 1 1/2, that is 12 furlongs for you rookie, than Big Red, Secretariat. So, Mikey boy go HOP on the bus back to Hialeah so you can be parking lot guard AGAIN. Mikey Rodriguez is the most over rated racing fan of all time and the most over rated barn sweep, parking lot guard, drug pusher and track master.
I agree with Woody commenting on Secretariat's statue. Yes it's a lovely tribute, but he was built like no other horse anyone had ever seen with a magnificent physique. Just like I did on 6/9/73 every time I see video of him I'm like everyone else and shed tears of joy that I had a chance to witness one of the greatest athletes in history.
He just L❤️VED running, it was in his soul! I wish they had just let him run on and on, until he didn't want to anymore. If he had been my horse, I would have let him, it would have been his choice, no whips, nothing, just to his hearts desire!!
Mike Rodriguez You would not understand the fact that my comment has NOTHING to do with the few times he was beaten. Secretariat was much MORE than a horse that was beaten a few times!!!
Jack Tattis Go find something else to do. You write the same comments over and over. Don’t watch Secretariat videos and especially read the comments if you don’t like him.
Thank you so much for this wonderful compilation video! So many clips & interviews I had never seen before. It was educational too. And how I enjoyed Woodie Broun’s poetic way with words! RIP to all of the wonderful people in Secretariat’s world who are no longer with us.
Great video:) Walking from the paddock at the Belmont, Secretariat was said to look as if he were "walking on springs." This video shows this nicely. Also has footage of Seth Hancock I've never seen before. I have a framed copy of the picture @1:10, where Turcotte's lost the thunder of the pack and Secretariat appears to be about 19 or so lengths ahead. I don't ever get tired of looking at it. One word: amazing. Two words: never again.
You are absolutely right. Man's attempts at breeding another Secretariat have all come up short. Only God can create perfection and his name was Big Red.
Ms Penny Chenery , always thanked the Secretariat team both at Meadow Farm in beautiful Historical Doswell Virginia and the team that would meet Secretariat and Riva Ridge when they began their racing careers . The HOF Groom Eddie Sweat, HOF Trainer Lucian Lauren ,HOF Jockey Ronnie Turcotte. Great memories awesome great hearing The late Howard Gentry the Farm Manager during Meadow Farm glory years talk about Riva Ridge the Meadow Farm Veternarian Team nursed Riva Ridge back to health when he first arrived. Bless our heroes of yesteryear Riva Ridge and Secretariat
If you excluded Secretariat, Sham would have been thought of as a super horse. He would have easily won the Triple Crown. Secretariat still holds all three track records in the Triple Crown. Imagine what his times would be if he did't break last in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. I still get chills every time I see videos of Secretariat.
@@AndyFromBeaverton Secretariat's jockey said he held him back didn't want to spend him, so that he could win the final 1.5 mile race and win the triple crown.
Lets put it this way, if Secretariat never came to be, there have been many, many, many super horses, but since Secretariat did come to be, there is only one super horse
Resembling a mule is an honor. Mules are what this country was built on. They are beautiful creatures and Woodie's description of Riva Ridge is unacceptable. All those equines are majestic, in their own.
Learning about Secretariat in 2024. I believe he is helping, and consoling many horses who have passed over who were mistreated around the world. And all of the horses with Secretariat now are free from pain and are no doubt comforting the ones here still whom need consolation and freedom....
Didn’t know of him until two days ago and now find myself to be amazed at the impact the story has left on me, sparking an interest I didn’t imagine ever having just the day before. I thank these two promising young adults who took me to The Kentucky Horse Park and Museum, showed me around and told me the stories of a few of the most magnificent thoroughbreds there were. I absolutely loved it, and want to get back down there very soon. Driving through the Georgetown/Lexington area of Kentucky with it’s black painted barns and fences, it’s grassy meadows, stone walls, and beautiful horses, it all comes together in such a great way that I’m honestly at a loss for words for the way it’s all made me feel.

I love you Secretariat !!! I cry when I see you Win!! The greatest Horse ever or ever will be!! Poetry in motion....La Machine !!!
+Mike Rodriguez Secretariat WAS the perfect STORM and it will haunt Mikey Rodriguez FOREVER just like Secretariat's DESTROYING Forego does.
Secretariat is the GOAT!!🐎🐴
He just L❤️VED running, it was in his soul! I wish they had just let him run on and on, until he didn't want to anymore. If he had been my horse, I would have let him, it would have been his choice, no whips, nothing, just to his hearts desire!!
We witnessed a miracle
DAMN RIGHT memories!!! He was THE one!
A magical time with a truly untouchable hero.
Mike Rodriguez Kelso was a gelding you moron. Do you know why?
Mike Rodriguez You would not understand the fact that my comment has NOTHING to do with the few times he was beaten. Secretariat was much MORE than a horse that was beaten a few times!!!
GREATEST HORSE OF ALL TIME!!!! HANDS DOWN!!! LUV YA BIG RED!!!
Glenn Do some research on Great horses elsewhere in the world
Jack Tattis Go find something else to do.
The most beautiful beloved gift from the Almighty God ❤❤❤❤
Great video:) Walking from the paddock at the Belmont, Secretariat was said to look as if he were "walking on springs." This video shows this nicely. Also has footage of Seth Hancock I've never seen before. I have a framed copy of the picture @1:10, where Turcotte's lost the thunder of the pack and Secretariat appears to be about 19 or so lengths ahead. I don't ever get tired of looking at it. One word: amazing. Two words: never again.
@jesusisnotallright s im sorry your blind sir it must be awful
A true miracle of God
If one excludes Secretariat from the data base, there have been several super horses. If you include Secretariat, there has been only one.
A great way to put it.
@@AndyFromBeaverton Secretariat's jockey said he held him back didn't want to spend him, so that he could win the final 1.5 mile race and win the triple crown.
i agree because he was so great people dont realize how good the competition was. Had it been a different time sham would have been the champion
There will probably never be another athlete as good, as charismatic, as beautiful and as loved by everybody as Secretariat. RIP PENNY & SECRETARIAT.
Lets put it this way, if Secretariat never came to be, there have been many, many, many super horses, but since Secretariat did come to be, there is only one super horse
Secretariat horse fantastic! From Brazil! 💚💛
Resembling a mule is an honor. Mules are what this country was built on. They are beautiful creatures and Woodie's description of Riva Ridge is unacceptable. All those equines are majestic, in their own.
True but he was describing a reality where people judge heros based on beauty. He wasn’t making a personal judgment.
Chic Anderson's call of the Belmont Stakes might be the greatest in the history of sports.
Love seeing Woody. He was so cool.
He was the best, I visited Claiborne farm
Learning about Secretariat in 2024. I believe he is helping, and consoling many horses who have passed over who were mistreated around the world. And all of the horses with Secretariat now are free from pain and are no doubt comforting the ones here still whom need consolation and freedom....
Secretariat was so very special !!!!!!!!!
SECRETARIAT is and alway will be the greatest athlete!!!
Hats off to Big Red one of the greatest athletes of all time
A wonderful presentation.
Secretariat is the most beautiful and perfect horse I’ve ever seen. If he had wings, he would’ve flown like a Pegasus.
Always a thrill to watch.
What a beautiful post ❤️
"These are all flowery, ridiculous things and you could say 'Hey, it's just a horse race.' I'm sorry, this horse was an athlete!" Jerry Izenberg, The Star-Ledger
kwgrid How could anyone say, "It's just a horse".
The way Mr. Izenberg slapped his hands for emphasis when he made that comment really drove his point home.
I was lucky enough to be born in Kentucky Big Red was A Household Name

One reporter said when they were checking Secretariat for drugs after a race, “They’re treating him just like another horse”! They were in the presence of greatness!
loved the video...just wonderful...thanks for sharing
Should have shown Big Red’s move in the Preakness.
Great documentary!
Thanks!
Everyone involved with Secretariat and Triple Crown races in 1973 made this moment a lasting memory for those of us who had the great fortune to witness it. Penny, Ron, Bill Nack, Chic Anderson, Seth, et al. Who has come along since then to even match them?
He as to be the best all those tracks records from 73 still unbroken amazing
Very educated good research you speak with confidence and authority, I'm talking about the horse. Oh, what a horse!
