- June 9th, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest feats in sports history. It was the day that Virginia born race horse Secretariat captured the Triple Crown and the attention of Americans from coast to coast. In his latest “I Have a Story” Greg McQuade introduces us to one man from Caroline County who witnessed greatness from the beginning.
Alvin Mines worked in the stables at The Meadow horse farm when Secretariat was just a foal in 1970. Alvin and his colleagues recognized almost immediately how special and powerful the horse was. Secretariat would go on to shatter records at the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and at the Belmont Stakes in 1973. Records that still stand today. Alvin says Secretariat was a legend and he believes those records will never be broken. Alvin says as Virginians we are lucky to claim one of the greatest athletes in history as our own.
Why does anything about Secretariat make me cry? Secretariat hits you deep inside and makes you feel...
I know. Me too.
Me too! I visited the Kentucky Horse Park several years ago. It was bittersweet as my Grandma always wanted to go there and never was able to. I went and stood in front of Secretariats statue and bawled my eyes out.
I just found out after watching these races and other stories
Me too. Because we know we’ll never see his like again.
Because he was transcendent.....he is my Spirit Horse...He makes me cry every time ...
Secretariat does not represent the common anything - he represents the miraculousness that God makes possible.
Amen!
You mean good genetics and a large heart?
I could listen to Mr. Alvin share his memories of Secretariat all day long. God bless you sir.
The man who petted him, loved him, took care of him. Who knew where to scratch, where to rub. Real horseman.
Alvin you have no idea how many people would trade their life for yours a horse like Secretariat comes once every 100 years and you got to be a part of it.
Great things come out of Virginia, what can i say. Once in a lifetime horse.
Thank you Alvin for sharing your experience and moments with Secretariat
There will never be another "Secretariat" ❤❤
I’m crying now just listening to him tell his story.
“A Tremendous Machine”!!! That still gives me chills every time I see this, and I never get tired of hearing/seeing this Legend!!
Mr Alvin lived a life most horse racing fan dream about thank u for sharing ur very special memories Mr Alvin
God bless you Alvin for sharing all your memories with us.
I was fortunate to get to visit The Meadow when it was open for tours. I got to stand inside the foaling shed Secretariat where was born. It gave me goosebumps! He won the Triple Crown the year I graduated from high school, and I knew I watched something very special that year. Amazing (but not a surprise) that the mighty Big Red still holds the stakes records in ALL three TC races. I doubt we will ever see his equal on the track. ❤
Same here and I graduated from HS in 1973 also.
Lucky
Wow, what good fortune that you could share part of your life with perfection. Perfection was Secretariat. Thanks for your memories, Alvin.
These grooms and stable men from then are the real hero’s and laid the foundation some reap from today.
Im grateful to have one of Secretariat's descendants who looks just like him. Big sorrel horse with the same blaze and same softness in the eye.
Did yours ever race?
I feel blessed to have a Great Granddaughter of Secretariat. Big bay with 4 white socks and a white star. Smart, kind, with a soft eye. My heart horse and a tiny piece of the one and only Secretariat. ❤️
There has to be a good story about how u got him
Meeting Secretariat in-person was a life changing experience for myself and my 4 young daughters back in the 80's. Secretariat was as close to perfection as a horse could ever be.
He was the greatest.
Secretariat was my teen idol! I would draw his portrait and keep a scrap book of articles about him. He was amazing!
I laid my hands all over Big Red in 1978. My ex husband was raised in Paris Ky and went to school with the Hancocks, he surprised me by taking me out there on a Sunday in December. Clay Arnold, I believe was the Head Stud Groom and I couldn't BELIEVE when he had one of the guys go out and "bring in Red for this little lady to meet". So there he was, covered in mud, thick winter coat and HUGE! He was such a gentleman he literally stood there on a loose lead and let me love all over him! You could still SEE the look of eagles in his eyes. My polaroid picture is my wallpaper on my phone! I'll never ever forget and am so grateful to my ex, Clay Arnold and Big Red for the privilege of meeting a once in lifetime miracle
I am so jealous! I wish I had seen him. My parents lived down the road from The Meadow horse farm. Its a shame what they did to the place. Parking lots where the horses used to run and play. Broke my heart when I saw it.
WOW! THE ONE AND ONLY SECRETARIAT!
That was a magical spring to be sure. I was 15 and watched every race in my parent’s living room. I remember the Belmont and thinking I just witnessed history, something that I will never see again!😊
Same here. Secretariat was a powerful gift from God.
I had just graduated from high school in 1973 and remember watching it on tv like it was yesterday.
Thank you so much for sharing this part of the story Alvin ❤ Appreciate it Greg
❤Oh,Thankyou so much Alvin for Sharing your Wonderful Memories with us ,of the One in a Million,"SECRETARIAT," ❤
( Big Red ) .How Fortunate you were , to have that Chance of A Lifetime Experience.!!! 😀
He truly was a super horse. I'm confident no horse will ever break all three of his records.
His running time for a mile and a half has never been broken.
What’s amazing about it to me is that he set that World record time in the Belmont without being asked for his best because of the large gap between first and second. Essentially, he set the World record without ever going into fifth gear.
@@jlove8445 you're right, Ron seldom even showed him the whip. He held him back in the first two triple crown races and pretty much just let him run his race in the Belmont. That burst of speed he showed in the Preakness was just an example of how much faster he was than other horses. If he had ever been truly pushed there's no telling how fast he could have run. The fact that he broke those records without being pushed and they still stand 50 years later is just amazing!
None of the triple crown races times will never be broken
@@jackbell5206Yeah, if only they had let him race just one more season . . . Instead we are left to speculate on the might-have-beens.
I know all about the syndicate and the Meadow being on hard times, but if only . . . Just one more season.
@@NavvyMom in my eyes there'll never be his equal. There may be a horse that breaks the Derby record or the Preakness record, but never the Belmont.
I tried to show my son and husband how magnificent Secretariat was when ran…no! Flew away from the rest of the other horses but I couldn’t convey how magical it was to them…it was like seeing the great horse - Phar Lap from the 1920’s. Seriously, I found the videos of Secretariat goosebump making🥰😮
Great horse. The greatest of all time. Great man, Alvin. Bless you and Big Red. As a young man I groomed one of Red’s first colts. Looked just like him. Horses are simply majestic creatures.
Secretariat is my favorite racehorse and I know all about him
He was an exceptional horse.
It makes me so sad to think about him being gone... I was so happy when he won the Belmont and the Triple Crown.
What a good man, that horse knew he was being taken care of and loved
Secretariat- still the goat.
I cant imagine how he feels because I still get chills watching this Beautiful Creature move. I watched those races and I picked him in the derby because I told my Dad look at him his hindend is so tall he will be running downhill. And we both laughed. Core Memory. That got even stronger with each race. ❤
the greatest of all time
Love this ❤️
The most gorgeous baby ever
The woman who is speaking is absolutely right, Kentucky is claiming that Secretariat was from Kentucky and the state is claiming ownership of Secretariat. I am shocked that they are claiming Secretariat as being from Kentucky. I saw the clip on U Tube and I was shocked and appalled at that false claim and U Tube needs to remove that clip because it's not true. Secretariat is from Virginia PERIOD. I noticed that the clip has blocked all comments because I tried to correct it but I could not. U Tube needs to remove that clip.
Secretariat was conceived in Ky, retired to Ky, bred in Ky , died in Ky , and is buried in Ky ! All on the same farm . Yes Big Red was born in Virgina but was conceived in the same place he passed . We Kentuckians proudly claim him and deserve to .
@@tfschmitz That's not what Ms. Chenery said that and her daughter said the same thing that Secretariat was born in Virginia and they consider it his home. That has been made very clear.
@@bjishername he was born in Virginia. However he was conceived in ky , and lived his final years in ky . He is buried at Claiborne farm in ky . I just paid my respects not long ago . Sorry but we proudly claim him with every right to do so. She did not bring him to her house farm after he retired .
@@tfschmitz Thats like saying someone's country of origin cant claim them because they didnt die there or live there during their final moments. Virginia has equal if not more rights to claim Secretariat as that is his birth place, that is the place he was raised in and trained in. Just because his mother was bred there doesnt give y'all any more rights, and just because he died there doesnt y'all that much more rights to him. He was retired there because he was meant to be a stud, Penny's family only had broodmares that they bred, not stallions otherwise she probably would've taken him and by then Secretariat was happy where he was in Claiborne, moving him would've done more harm than good, it would've stressed him out.
@@tfschmitzHe was born, raised, trained and raced in and from Virginia. You have no right to claim him at all.
He never passed on those gene's of greatness ! I guess he was meant to be the greatest of all , one in a century ❤ rip
Apparently the X Factor is passed on through the mother.
If you don't know what that is that's the enlarged heart syndrome they call it the X Factor it has its own Wikipedia page if you're interested
The fact that his story was made into a movie just is something different..
I was just a young teen, but I will never forget those races. He was an amazing boy.
I live in Richmond Va and I am so proud to say I have been there but also, I'm so sad I never got to meet him. I'm 33 now so he passed before I was born. 😔
I was fortunate to see him twice at Claiborne Farm. He was so friendly that the groom let us pet him and feed him starlight mints. I had tears in my eyes from just being in the presence of such greatness.
@@peskycitizen7582 My gosh I can only imagine! How lucky you are! ❤
I have a DVD of Secretariat and Seabiscuit watch them often . Guess which one is coming out tonight.
No horse has ever come close to the records set by Secretariat.
I was given a private tour of the Meadows the day after the Virginia State Fair closed in the fall of 2016 by Leanne Ladin. As it happened, I was there on the date of his death. She kept the huge "poster" of him, life-sized, up and I look so small next to him! She told me stories about how as a young horse he would go into the river and they would frantically have to find him! My mom was in hospice in Dec. 2015 and I was up one night very late and suddenly the name "Secretariat" flashed into my mind. I went to YT and looked at the grainy Belmont over and over again and cried my heart out. After she passed in Feb. 2016, the NYRA finally released the color film of the race. That fall I went to his birthplace and then to KY to his grave and wept unabashedly and was given a rose from the bouquet on his grave. I still have it under glass. I have a wonderful collection with items signed by Ron and Penny. I also met his last born colt, Tinners Way, at Old Friends. To say it was a pilgrimage is not an exaggeration. It was magic. (PS..let's not forget Riva Ridge!)
BIG RED❤👏👏👏
GOAT🐐
X Factor= enlarged heart
26lbs
Average horse is 7lb to 10lbs
Why is there NOT a license plate remembering Secretariat in Virginia!!!~!!!!
Is Eddie Sweat still alive?
No. I forgot the details, but he died of cancer years ago. “The Horse God Built” by Lawrence Scanlan tells the story of Eddie and Secretariat.
My Lord Jesus Christ rode on a donkey entering Jerusalem. When He returns again he’ll be riding Big Red I reckon.
Sham was the only horse faster than secretrait !
Had they waited and rain sham in the Kentucky Derby
Instead of the wood memorial they would not had
The chance to get to Sham the night before the
Derby. After the Wood Memorial the Sham was faster
And he would beat big red in the Derby just like he
Did in the Wood Memorial!
You were proven wrong not matter how you want to tweak it.
I so loved God's horse
