I am 72 years old and have been a subscriber to Sports Illustrated for 55 years. Bill Nack’s classic article about the life, and death of Secretariat, “Pure Heart”, is the greatest, most evocative, brilliantly written story I have ever read in that magazine. I made several copies which I have loaned to friends and horse racing fans (probably illegal!) since it was published in 1990. If you haven’t read it, stop what you are doing , and read it. NOW!
Bill Nack, listening to you takes me there, back then. The way of yours has brought many tears to my eyes about Secretariate. Thank you. You are the greatest story teller, my friend.
Yes I agree Bill knack was a great story teller like when he says secretariat at the Belmont stake looked like the execution man going to the gallows and he was about to dispatch someone.
The movie pulled at my heart strings! Bill, your book is amazing! I'm not just saying that because I was raised on Long Island:) Huntington to be exact:) I would encourage everyone to see the movie and read the book. Penney Tweedy was the best owner for Secretariat. She took no excrement from men who dominated this arena at this time. She actually made history. She believed in Secretariat before he was born! Brava Penney and Bravo Secretariat!
I love listening to Bill. So knowledgeable and I'm so glad that our champion, Secretarat, got Bill as his biographer. And, it's nice to that Bill remembered to mention why Secretariat lost Wood-Memorial. Penny should have made sure that Secretariat was in top shape everyday. It kinda angers me that she made him run with an infection in his mouth and im sure he was running a fever too. But still finished 3rd! amamzing.
I just read a couple of articles about Eddie Sweat who took care Secretariat as a groom. He died broke and none of the people he worked with including Penny Chenery and Bill Nack or Roger Chenery sent a flower or went to his funeral which was in 1998. Sad.
It’s really sad. I wonder maybe there was no more communication among them after Eddie Sweat left the Meadow Stud in 1973 until he died in 1998. Just like after retirement, people went their own separate lives. Within 25 years, a lot of things happened in the lives of the original team members involved with Secretariat. Sadly, Secretariat passed away in 1989 at the age of 19. The last race he won in October 1973 was here in Canada (Woodbine, Toronto, Ontario). R.I.P. Eddie and Big Red. We’ll always love 💕 both of you.
@@priscillai.casimiro8785 Beautiful comment and correct that people go their separate ways. I guess I am placing my idealistic hopes on others which isn't fair.
He’s part of that legacy for all time. Even Abraham’s promise was fulfilled long after he was gone. No one can take away his place in this miracle event.
Mr. Nack just passed away, either yesterday or today. I regret that I didn't know anything about him before today. I read an article he wrote on Secretariat for Sports Illustrated that was selected as one of its best pieces for its 60th anniversary.
Bill nack my name is Barry shulman 61yrs old grew up with horses and know everything from doing a horses legs up after the hotwalker cooled down the horse. I became the best exercise rider and grew up in the suburbs of lynnfield ma. I also I am a retired professional dental laboratory technician and worked in a crown and bridge laboratory with two other technicians its an art just like working with the horses my mother brought me to riding lessons at the north Andover riding academy which no longer exists. I watched secretariat on the backside of Suffolk Downs in east Boston on TV in the mess hall that had a fire which was terrible. I watched the all three races .Sham was a great horse.
I could listen to you talk about Secretariat all day the love and passion you had for that horse R.I.P. Mr.Nack
Mr Nack is such an awesome guy to listen to. So thankful that there is a significant amount of videos with his interesting orations.

Just read it. Great Article. Could have done without opening description of putting Secretariat down. But I agree with you.

OMG I'M CRYING TOO LISTENING TO BILL NACK TALK ABOUT THAT FABULOUSLY MAGNIFICENT HORSE.
Oh and I am referring to Secretariat !!!❤️🥰😍🥰😍❤️
Thank goodness for Bill. Because of his gift and Secretariat's talent, the wonder of that time is still fresh and new today; and will remain so😊
What a wonderful story and blessing from God…🤗🙏
Thank God for Bill Nack telling me how to feel about events I lived through.
Mr. Nack is an amazing guy! So talented!
You picked the greatest thing in the world to write a book about
Excellent speech ..RIP BILL.
God allowed us to experience a bit of perfection.

I love this horse. This movie is my favorite movie.

What would his weight be in Platinum, and please tell us what that would have been like you did in Gold.

I think Eddie and Secretariat deserved better care

That is truly appalling.
How can I find out if he's giving lectures? I would love to go to a lecture given by him.

I was a track rider at Belmont in 1973. People had bumper stickers saying “Secretariat for President”. What a horse!

Was NORTHER DANCER a relation to SECRETARIAT?
