Funnily enough, I put my L2pro up today to repair some cat claw holes in the flysheet 😱 A small dab and swirl of sealant inside and out will fix them up. I know this because I fixed some rogue stitch holes from the factory in the same way 4 years ago and not a single leak since. I was nervous since It was my first lanshan tent so I paid the extra money for 3FUL to seam seal it for me. When I got my lanshan 2 pro, I only saw seam seal on the stitching but other areas weren't obviously sealed so I contacted 3FUL and they told me they switched to syringe sealing because people were complaining about the look of the brush seal and discoloration. I wasn't sure if they were just giving me a run around so I tested the tent out in two days of heavy rain here in NY and the following day, there were no leaks. I am impressed at how they seal the lanshan without any visible discolorations. (Personally I don't mind discoloration if it's sealed.) Nice job on your seam seal! I'm not sure I would've had a steady hand to do a clean job myself. lol

Thank You! My LanShan 2 Pro that came yesterday and didn’t have a syringe in the package. No instructions, nothing. No tags even. I love the tent, but disappointed they didn’t send the rest. Although they sent 2 new straps to adhere it to the outside of my backpack. Which I don’t need. Love your videos! I’m in Michigan, USA 😊

Nice neat job there. Just done mine and have it set up drying in the living room. I bought some bathroom silicone and was going to use that but I saw some Warbonnet 100% silicone sealant on Henge Hammocks for a couple of quid so I bottled it and used that instead. It's a lot thicker so I diluted it down with white spirit till it's like a thick oil as people suggest and it worked perfectly stretching the seam apart and squirting a bead in with the syringe I got with the tent. When I went inside to do the other side of the tie-outs I could see the threads glistening so it definitely soaks in well like that. I do have a steady hand but I don't see how you could mess it up this way. Took about an hour tops and I only used about 1/3 of the tube which was tiny. Can't even see it on the side that's dryest now so I'm well happy :)
Pretty good technique, that's what I was telling you about in the first video. Pulling the seam apart as much as you can makes all the difference. Now you don't have to worry about those silicone peeling off cuz it has filled all the needle holes. I absolutely love this tent, one of the most spacious and waterproof tent out there.

For anybody out there who is interested, it's Vow-Dai Justin, not Vawd... Not a criticism btw, just saying. Another btw is - you have pegged all the side pull-out guys to the mid-skirt/entrance pegging points, which is defeating the object of them. They should be pegged as far away from the tent as possible to create the best angle to pull the mid-panel out, creating more space inside the tent, and improving ventilation, and/or to stop the outer touching the inner - if you are using one - in a wind. Otherwise they are doing nothing at all. Re-silicon sealing - with a 50/50 dilution with white spirit it goes much further, and you can wipe any excess off with a cloth lightly moistened with white spirit, and this will also push the sealant into the threads and any stitch holes, and it hardly leaves a trace when it has dried. It is a much faster way of doing the job, I mean a lot faster! The idea is that the silicon is forced/soaks into the threads and holes, and is not meant to form a layer as such. I am only trying to be helpful, not niggling, sincerely. I would have used a syringe, possibly, once, but when you have done a few tents, I assure you that the dilute, middling-sized brush, force in/wipe off excess with cloth method is much faster and more effective long-term. A bead of sealant can come 'unpeeled' sometimes. If anyone is really worried about appearance, pitch the tent inside out and seal it that way. And slight mistakes would mostly be seen on the inside afterwards, and you probably couldn't see them once inside the inner anyway. I like your relaxed style Justin (-;)~
Hi Bob, I know about the mid pull-out guys creating a little more headroom inside. I just set it up that way for the seam sealing. I might try the silicone/white spirit mix and brush next time. I’ve seen a few videos like that. Yes, a lot faster but quite scruffy looking IMO. It’s a lot cheaper certainly but you don’t need a lot. I like things neat and tidy though, so we’ll see. PS - You’re right, pronunciation ‘Fow-der’ because I since learned they are a German company. I am fluent in German so I know this is right, but because I ordered it from the French Hardloop website I didn’t know at the time and went for the french pronunciation. 👍 Justin
I'm confused by the double reference to outer/inner you make above. I've ordered this tent (Pro) on the basis that is a single layer tent unlike the original Lanshan 2. Are you talking about a different tent (i.e. not the single layer Pro version in this video) re outer / inner issues in your comment?

I’ve just sealed a tipi style tent. I agree, from past experience, applying by brush is a messy pain. This time I watered down the sealant with white spirits and applied with a small vape juice bottle. Like your method, much more control and a far superior finish.
@@ashab1 so long as your mix is thin enough to soak into the threads it’s worth a try I suppose. The only problem I foresee is that gravity will be working against you. Applied on the outside, the silicone mix naturally soaks downward and into the threads. Applied with a vape juice bottle the mess really is kept to a minimum so I wouldn’t worry too much. Good luck!
It takes a lot longer with a syringe but if you’ve got all day and you like it neat, then why not take your time? Whatever you do, leave the tent up for at least 24 hours. It will be a right mess if you pack it away with the glue not fully dry. I left mine up for 2 days and unexpectedly it rained hard! See my other vid ‘HEAVY RAIN TEST’ 👍
I sealed my Lanshan 1 pro and I don't think you need to be as neat as you are trying to be. I just used clear silicone caulk diluted with solvent - about 25% caulk (any non-polar solvent will do - paint thinner, heptane...). I just used a brush and forced it into the linear seams and painted it on firmly on the patches. Works great and is easy and super cheap. All that needs to be done is to fill the pin holes from the stitching.
Yeah, I’ve seen the use of silicone and white spirit with a much wider brush. It works. I’m glad I made a neat job of it though, that’s just how I like to do things. 👍
At my local gear store in Finland they stocked the Gear Aid sealant from both Hilleberg and Vaude. The latter one was cheaper and came with the exact same accessories. Reading the comments on the 3F youtube you can get the syringe for free by sending them your order information. Newer orders get the syringe in the bag for the tent pegs. Cheers for a great video!

You can do it with a brush and work it into all the seams. It uses more sealant and looks messy, but still works. You can also mix your own sealant using clear bathroom sealant and white spirit. Depends on lots of factors. Pitch it high, no rain, with wind = no condensation. Pitch it low, rain, near to lake/river = condensation. You’ll learn how to avoid the worst of it, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it with a single skin tent.
I would have cut up the tent stuff sack and used the patches that came with your seam sealer to fix the sack. That way the colour would totally blend into the tent. Peace

Are you familiar with the Flames Creed version of this same Lanshan tent? do you think it's the same material used or it's just a knockoff that is not comparable to the original 3F UL Lanshan?
My tent is the Flames Creed L2pro. It’s exactly the same as the 3F. I think they are either made in the same factory or licensed with exactly the same design and materials. You just need any silnylon sealant - McNett Seam Grip+SIL is pretty good and stocked most outdoor places...but basically just be sure the sealant is for silnylon and you'll be golden.
Hello. Thought maybe if the patch color did not match and it really bothers you just cut a patch out of the tent bag and then use the non matching color on the bag! maybe disguised as a label? ( if found please enjoy it with a clean conscience! Ha! then a return address? :)
Hi Justin, in preparation of my upcoming walk I also want to seal the seams of my tent and got myself some of the sealant. The instructions say that the sealant should be applied from the inside - I also spotted those in your video. Is there a reason why you decided to do it from the outside? Cheers 🍺

Ok, the Lanshan 2 Pro is double sided silnylon Material. The right sealant Is important or it will not stick. Check your tent material and search online for advice. Was your tent already tape sealed in the factory? If so, then you don’t need to do it. You can seal inside or outside. If you use a thick wide brush it can look very messy. That’s why some people do it inside. Depends on personal preference and tent design. 👍
@@JustinWhiting9 Right. So, it turned out to be the same material, but I started to apply the sealant from the inside. That lasted not more than a few minutes - the main reason being a species of suicidal flies and tropical temperatures. I guess I would have ended right next to those flies if I had continued. From the outside it was much easier and even without the syringe it went quite well when I got the hang of it. The brush is really stupid, though. During the last quarter of the job it had already become so stiff that I could also have used a pencil to spread the glue 🙄 Cheers and thanks again for the advice.
Hi Senior, Did your Lanshan come with a syringe? I can recommend it for the diagonals. Have a practice on something else first though, it’s tricky to control the bead and keep it straight at first. Good luck! 👍 ⛺️

Have you got the Lanshan 2 (old version) or Lanshan 2 Pro (new version)? You don’t need to seam seal the old version. It is one-sided silnylon material and the inner surface is tape sealed in the factory. You can add a silicon sealant if you like, to improve the waterproofing even more, but it is not necessary. The new version is a single skin tent in two-sided silnylon material. This cannot be seam sealed in the factory, so you have to do it yourself, like I did. Yes, McNett rebranded as Gear Aid. Same stuff. 👍 Justin
Actually I had the old version, but was bothered by the inner hanging down, and I therefore decided for the Pro. No regrets!😅 Easier to pitch as well, I think...✌️😄 Amazing how much tent for only about 135£..

Hi Nik, It's because the L1pro and L2pro use double-sided silnylon fabric which cannot be tape-sealed. A silicone-based sealant must be applied with the tent fully pitched. Then you have to wait several hours for it to dry. That's why they don't do it in the factory. Imagine the time, space and labour needed to do that in production... I've camped in mine about 12 times without any leaks so far. 👍 Justin.
I just did it to lanshan 2pro.. The fact that top spots where you insert trekking poles are not factory sealed and reinforced is bit disappointing. let's see how it goes.

I’ve seen a few people use those. It must be silicone on the L2 Pro though and I’m not sure the spray sealant would get right down into every inch of the stitching like the syringe does. Could work though. 👍
I seam-sealed my Lanshan 1 Pro... before having a close look at the inside : I realized there is no way water could go through the tent ! NO NEED TO SEAM SEAL A LANSHAN !!!!!
Hi Dana, for light rain or showers it will keep the rain out but for storms or long heavy rain it will eventually leak through the pin holes from the stitching, particularly down the diagonals, and also into the bathtub via the 2 top cones and the side wall anchor points. The L2pro is a single skin tent. He was talking about pegging the side wall out, which can be done in single or double skin tents.

You can do it with a brush and work it into all the seams. It uses more sealant and looks messy, but still works. You can also mix your own sealant using clear bathroom sealant and white spirit. Depends on lots of factors. Pitch it high, no rain, with wind = no condensation. Pitch it low, rain, near to lake/river = condensation. You’ll learn how to avoid the worst of it, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it with a single skin tent.

I would have cut up the tent stuff sack and used the patches that came with your seam sealer to fix the sack. That way the colour would totally blend into the tent.

Are you familiar with the Flames Creed version of this same Lanshan tent? do you think it's the same material used or it's just a knockoff that is not comparable to the original 3F UL Lanshan?
My tent is the Flames Creed L2pro. It’s exactly the same as the 3F. I think they are either made in the same factory or licensed with exactly the same design and materials. You just need any silnylon sealant - McNett Seam Grip+SIL is pretty good and stocked most outdoor places...but basically just be sure the sealant is for silnylon and you'll be golden.

Hello. Thought maybe if the patch color did not match and it really bothers you just cut a patch out of the tent bag and then use the non matching color on the bag! maybe disguised as a label? ( if found please enjoy it with a clean conscience! Ha! then a return address? :)

Hi Justin, in preparation of my upcoming walk I also want to seal the seams of my tent and got myself some of the sealant. The instructions say that the sealant should be applied from the inside - I also spotted those in your video. Is there a reason why you decided to do it from the outside? Cheers 🍺

Ok, the Lanshan 2 Pro is double sided silnylon Material. The right sealant Is important or it will not stick. Check your tent material and search online for advice. Was your tent already tape sealed in the factory? If so, then you don’t need to do it. You can seal inside or outside. If you use a thick wide brush it can look very messy. That’s why some people do it inside. Depends on personal preference and tent design. 👍

@@JustinWhiting9 Right. So, it turned out to be the same material, but I started to apply the sealant from the inside. That lasted not more than a few minutes - the main reason being a species of suicidal flies and tropical temperatures. I guess I would have ended right next to those flies if I had continued.
From the outside it was much easier and even without the syringe it went quite well when I got the hang of it. The brush is really stupid, though. During the last quarter of the job it had already become so stiff that I could also have used a pencil to spread the glue 🙄

Hi Senior, Did your Lanshan come with a syringe? I can recommend it for the diagonals. Have a practice on something else first though, it’s tricky to control the bead and keep it straight at first. Good luck! 👍 ⛺️

Have you got the Lanshan 2 (old version) or Lanshan 2 Pro (new version)? You don’t need to seam seal the old version. It is one-sided silnylon material and the inner surface is tape sealed in the factory. You can add a silicon sealant if you like, to improve the waterproofing even more, but it is not necessary. The new version is a single skin tent in two-sided silnylon material. This cannot be seam sealed in the factory, so you have to do it yourself, like I did. Yes, McNett rebranded as Gear Aid. Same stuff. 👍 Justin
Actually I had the old version, but was bothered by the inner hanging down, and I therefore decided for the Pro. No regrets!😅 Easier to pitch as well, I think...✌️😄 Amazing how much tent for only about 135£..

Hi Nik, It's because the L1pro and L2pro use double-sided silnylon fabric which cannot be tape-sealed. A silicone-based sealant must be applied with the tent fully pitched. Then you have to wait several hours for it to dry. That's why they don't do it in the factory. Imagine the time, space and labour needed to do that in production... I've camped in mine about 12 times without any leaks so far. 👍 Justin.

The fact that top spots where you insert trekking poles are not factory sealed and reinforced is bit disappointing. let's see how it goes.

You have to use a silicone based seam sealer. Normal seam sealer will just peel off easily when it dries.

Sealing the tie-out points/black checkers thing at the bottom of the fly is of no use - even if it leaks there, it will only leak to the floor.
Yeah, I know but I had some left over. It makes the stitching a little more robust I find, especially when pulling tight. 👍
What about a spray sealant?
I’ve seen a few people use those. It must be silicone on the L2 Pro though and I’m not sure the spray sealant would get right down into every inch of the stitching like the syringe does. Could work though. 👍
I seam-sealed my Lanshan 1 Pro... before having a close look at the inside : I realized there is no way water could go through the tent ! NO NEED TO SEAM SEAL A LANSHAN !!!!!
Hi Dana, for light rain or showers it will keep the rain out but for storms or long heavy rain it will eventually leak through the pin holes from the stitching, particularly down the diagonals, and also into the bathtub via the 2 top cones and the side wall anchor points.
