Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal Railroad, 1957.

- These little saddle tank steam locomotives shunted freight cars between rail car floats and factories on the north Brooklyn waterfront until 1962 or '63. The operation ran with diesels engines until 1983. One of the steam engines (#16) sat on the property abandoned until the late 1990s. The rich have now taken over this prime real estate with Manhattan views from their hi-rise condos.

I moved the 16 from Kent Ave. to the former NY Cross Harbor RR engine house in Sunset Park, about 1992 or so. The idea was to restore it, and run it along part of the Bay Ridge branch of the LIRR as steam powered tourist operation, which were popular at the time. The pair of abandoned LIRR Bar-Generator cars stuck inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal were supposed to have been used in this venture as well. Sadly, for a number of reasons, it never materialized. A few years later, when its management changed, NY Cross Harbor quietly "re- donated" the 16 to the LIRR Museum in Riverhead, where I heard it sits in several pieces today.
From what I've seen and heard from the museum and the engine, it was put back together with most of its parts and remains a static display to this day
At 1:52, that 0-6-0T No.15 is the only operating Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal Railroad Tank Engine. Now it’s rebuilt to look like Thomas The Tank Engine himself at the Strasburg Railroad.
That's basically common knowledge, but thanks anyways for educating those who didn't already know
They should have left it original.
That little blue abomination should never have been...
my BEDT favorite, is 12 because I saw him in person and and my other favorite is 16 because he’s not far from me
My favorite B.E.D.T engines are #14 and #15
Nah, that’s just thomas before his makeoever
If you were going for a joke, it wasn't very effective
Great video. Do you own this footage?
Fun fact: BEDT #12 (seen at 1:40 - 1:42, and again at 1:55) is now residing at the Florida Railroad Museum. I'm not sure if #12 is being restored or not, but it would be rather cool to see.
Wait, #12 is residing at the Florida Railroad Museum as #15 was converted into a steam operated Thomas replica at the Strasburg Railroad?!?!
Not sure if you'll see this, but I'm a Floridian local who has been around #12 for a while, it probably won't be restored to operation any time soon but at least it wasn't scrapped.
@@TheRealStikShady I'm thankful for that at least
Still, one can dream..
@@chucke.cheesesmichiganprod1254 Eeyup ^^
@@The_EmeraldOne it is currently missing some brass parts which I assume are in storage, such as it's whistle, builder's plate, and number plate. However it is also missing it's siderods, particularly the ones that push into the pistons. They are probably also in storage, however with how many owners the engine has had, they could just as well be lost.
b e t d 15 is thomas
nope 16
Correct, #15 IS Thomas on the Strasburg Railroad, well, it was converted into a steam operated Thomas replica and is the only steam operated Thomas locomotive in the US
That is nice color for 1957 !
Interesting seeing all the sand along the rails, lot of traction needed to hustle those cars around the terminal…
*BEDT, you misspelled the acronym
