Working a Carfloat

  • Some HD video of working the carfloat on my CNJ Bronx Terminal.
This video shows the prototypical method for unloading a carfloat. Three of the six cars on the float are pulled off from one side of the float, then all 6 cars on the opposite side, these are stored in the yard. This helps equalize the balance of the float. Then, the three that were left on the outer track are pulled, followed by all the cars on the centre track. Two pulls are all that are required to empty the float.
The locomotive has been re-worked with a new High Bass speaker installed by Lew White at Tony's Trains at the NMRA Convention in Hartford. The sound has also been improved with better samples, installed into the QSI Revolution decoder by Josh Shedaker, also at the convention.

Cool, very cool! I was watching a video on shipping military hardware through the nation's rail system and for some reason your video brought that back to memory. It must have been the movement of rail cars on yet another moving substance that is water. The water is fluid so everything has to line up perfectly and add to that rolling rail cars to make a difficult task to say the least. I was surprised to hear that the military doesn't load their own equipment at railhead they were paying someone else to do so. Back in the day (1975-78) we had to load our vehicles ourselves at railhead. They hired the a retired marine quartermaster Sargent as director of a U.S. Marine Depot at Barstow California in charge of rail shipping. He came to a conclusion that it was more cost effective to train the Marine companies using rail services than it was to go outside the Corp to do so, but hey we in the Army knew the that 40 years ago.

@DunnyRail: Actually, with the design of NY style carfloats, you cannot access the center track until the left track is clear because the frog for the left and center tracks is on the carfloat, w/ the points on the float bridge. (And yes, I've seen the western type carfloats where there are three individiual tracks on the carfloat.) The correct procedure for NY style carfloats:
    1) Pull left track string of cars half way off carfloat half on land & float bridge.

    Hi,
That is a common misconception about rail-marine operations. It was very common to run the locomotives onto the float bridges and the floats. Many of the terminals in New York had no rail connections, the only way to get motive power was to bring it over on the floats.

For the short time I worked for NYCHRR in '86, reacher car ALWAYS on apron... NEVER engine!!! "PULL" one side of the Float PARTIALLY off the Float past the apron and bridge... THEN leave THAT cut... REVERSE over the turnouts, Go back and PICK the OTHER side of the Float's OTHER outside track, Hook-up and PULL THAT side of the Float's cars fully OFF the Float into the Yard... then BACK to the cut left on Bridge/Apron... Pick and then PULL the consist over the turn-outs.. THEN back to the cut to the the middle of the Float and pull THAT into to the yard!!! VOILA!!! ....Weather, TIDES and a KEEN Knowledge of NY Harbor involved in tying up the Float and overall operations!!! (Charlie R. Greenville Yard "rookie"...) THANKS, "Freddie" B, Thanks, "Bob".... "Harry" & "Steve", well... thanks to you also.

@bnsfozzy If you hunt through the blog, I have several posts showing me re-working the loco. It isn't an MDC boxcab though, its an old Japanese brass import.

Hmmm, I thought locomotives were not allowed on the barge or float bridge (is that the correct term?)?
Sound of the locomotive is very nice.

I am very much intrigued by the circular freight house. What was the reason behind that design choice?

    2) Uncouple. Locomotive switches over to right track
    3) Couple to right track cut of cars.
    4) Pull off carfloat switching back to left track.
    5) Push right track cut of cars to left track cut of cars, couple.
    6) Pull combined right and left cuts of cars clear of the center track turnout points.
    7) Throw points for alignment to center track.
    8) Push combined right & left cuts onto center track, onto carfloat and couple to center track cut of cars.
    off .

    Wonderful trackwork! Very interesting layout.
But where is enginehouse? Track to it is in place with complex over-rail crossing - amazing!

Kind of hard to believe, but it sounds like QSI is still using some of the same sounds they used in MTH O Scale engines 20 years ago...

That's some very impressive trackwork of a unique prototype. Too bad it's long gone. Didn't they use idler flats on the apron instead of letting the locomotive onto the apron or the barge because of its weight?

  • @BEDT14
    @BEDT14 13 років тому

    9) Pull combined right, left and center cuts of cars off carfloat.
Carfloat is now empty of cars.
    To load, reverse order.

Why do you go all around the building when pulling the second set of cars off the float? Couldn't you just go straight onto the seperate curved track and reverse into the siding?
