Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal Railroad, 1957.
Переглядів 5 тис.9 років тому
These little saddle tank steam locomotives shunted freight cars between rail car floats and factories on the north Brooklyn waterfront until 1962 or '63. The operation ran with diesels engines until 1983. One of the steam engines (#16) sat on the property abandoned until the late 1990s. The rich have now taken over this prime real estate with Manhattan views from their hi-rise condos.

C&O 614 Hoboken to Port Jervis October 1996
Переглядів 19 тис.16 років тому
Ross Rowland ran his locomotive C&O 614, a 1948 vintage 4-8-4, from Hoboken, NJ to Port Jervis, NY and return on three weekends in October 1996, hauling railfans both up and back on both Saturdays and Sunday each weekend. The afternoon layover in Port Jervis each day was spent doing photo run-bys and turning the locomotive on the old, partially functioning Erie turntable now powered by bulldoze...

The Ballad of Susan Smith by Lee Ann Brown
Переглядів 20 тис.16 років тому
In 1994, Susan Smith, a young South Carolina mother, eased her car down a slope into a lake, drowning her two toddler sons who were secured in the car's child safely seats. She claimed that the vehicle with her sons inside was carjacked a black man. After weeks of a nationwide manhunt for that ficticious man, she confessed to the crime. In this film, North Carolina born New York poet Lee Ann Br...

    I moved the 16 from Kent Ave. to the former NY Cross Harbor RR engine house in Sunset Park, about 1992 or so. The idea was to restore it, and run it along part of the Bay Ridge branch of the LIRR as steam powered tourist operation, which were popular at the time. The pair of abandoned LIRR Bar-Generator cars stuck inside the Brooklyn Army Terminal were supposed to have been used in this venture as well. Sadly, for a number of reasons, it never materialized. A few years later, when its management changed, NY Cross Harbor quietly "re- donated" the 16 to the LIRR Museum in Riverhead, where I heard it sits in several pieces today.

    At 1:52, that 0-6-0T No.15 is the only operating Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal Railroad Tank Engine. Now it’s rebuilt to look like Thomas The Tank Engine himself at the Strasburg Railroad.

    At one point a steam locomotive is heard - a mistake, because all the trains at Penn Station were electric; the smoke from steamers would be intolerable in the tunnels.It's Grand Central TERMINAL. Not station. It's the end of the line.---The destruction of Penn Station motivated the designation of certain buildings as historic landmarks, and saved Grand Central Terminal from the wrecking ball.

    Fun fact: BEDT #12 (seen at 1:40 - 1:42, and again at 1:55) is now residing at the Florida Railroad Museum. I'm not sure if #12 is being restored or not, but it would be rather cool to see.

      @@The_EmeraldOne it is currently missing some brass parts which I assume are in storage, such as it's whistle, builder's plate, and number plate. However it is also missing it's siderods, particularly the ones that push into the pistons. They are probably also in storage, however with how many owners the engine has had, they could just as well be lost.

    • @maintim
      @maintim 9 років тому

      anonymous anonymous You certain could travel directly to Maine (at least in the Summer on the Bar Harbor Express) which skirted around Boston and avoid North and South Stations.

    • @anonymousanonymous7250
      @anonymousanonymous7250 9 років тому

      maintim I'm confused. The Pennsylvania Railroad didn't go to Florida or Maine, yet you could get trains from Penn Station to those locations. The Boston & Maine, Maine Central, Southern, Atlantic Coast Line, and Seaboard Air Line Railroads didn't go into Penn Station, yet specific trains operated on multiple Railroads, like the Silver Comet, which was officially operated by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, yet New York doesn't appear on any of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad maps. Can you help me sift through it?

    • @JugSouthgate
      @JugSouthgate 5 років тому

      The way it worked was that the trains were pulled by PRR locomotives over PRR tracks, and then changed to the locos of other RRs.Trains going south (Southern, ACL, SAL) would originate in NYC and make limited stops on the PRR to Washington DC. In Washington, the PRR electric locomotive would be replaced by a steam or diesel from the RR that actually owned the trainset. The station in Washington DC is actually named Washington Union Terminal - the "Union" refers to the fact that several railroads used it cooperatively. In the old days, PRR, B&O, C&O, RF&P and other railroads all used it. Trains going north went around Boston.

    I'd just like to say that you have a gorgeous voice, and I really don't think there's anything wrong with this song. It's not glorifying the crime or saying what that woman did was okay - it's remembering a tragic event, and an interesting look at what Susan Smith's perspective might have been. I don't think the song is at all disrespectful to the memory of those children, and I think that it's important to remember that things like this have happened so we can keep them from happening again.

What really gets me is that she killed her two boys because apparently loverboy didn't want any children. If I'm dating someone and I have two kids, the moment he tells me that the doesn't want any children is the moment he is GONE! I don't care how much I love him, my kids are more important then any man.

    The subject of this song may not be pleasant, but it exposes a truth concerning how a person lost their mind and did such a horrible act. To me, that's what songwriting is about, telling it like it is. It's beautifully sung and very well crafted....five stars to you. :) Janet
