I can attest to this comment due to my friend and roommate commented on how fighting my Tau Army was not fun to play against after my 2 wins after losing to him to every game I played against him. I am significantly less experienced in playing 40k compared to him but after I learned how to play Tau and won my games, he stopped being interested to play against my specific list XD aka I need to be more casual or "handicap" myself if he kindly wants to play more.
@@kerviuskuroshiba5120 Ugh... I've been in that position. High school bud would play a game with me and win like 80% of the time, but when I WOULD win, he would lose his shit like it's totally unfair.
I love Tau, first army I ever picked up. Something about Gundam like battle suits is really nice. Personally I prefer Farsight, the extra commander per detachment is just so helpful, now I don't have to bring more units for another commander. Trip-tide lists are fun too, and with the new 9th edition rules regarding monsters and vehicles its gonna be even more deadly.
No one: GW creating 9th edition: "NERF ALL TAU! NERF THEM ALL!" "But... Why?" "DO NOT QUESTION MY DECISION!" "Uhh, ok. At least the riptide will finally be balanced" "NO! NERF ALL TAU EXCEPT RIPTIDE. EVEN BETTER, BUFF THE RIPTIDE! YES, YES, YES! I AM A GENIUS! THIS WILL DEFINITELY GET MORE PLAYERS INTO THE HOBBY!"
The tier list for the most part is rather on point, except for one (or two) units. Crisis Suits. Crisis Suits are very arguably a tier-5 unit when put into Farsight Enclaves, due to how many buffs they can acquire. A jump to BS3+ is gigantic in an army that is balanced for the potential for all of their units to gain that through Markerlights, where you can just pay 2 CP to get that for free, through the whole game. Second, Bodyguards are arguably well worth the 3 additional points per suit, as within Farsight Enclaves, the presence of 6 Commanders allows your Bodyguards to soak wounds for them, namely wounds that come from targeted psychic powers, as drones cannot do so. In addition, having an additional attack may not seem like much, but remember that those upgrades bodyguards also have BS4+ with an Advanced Targeting System. With a 1 cost stratagem, they are essentially throwing a heavy bolter each in melee that rerolls hits and wounds. Third, Crisis Suits hardly use Fusion Blasters for Anti-tank. They use Cyclic Ion Blasters, which have way more shots and are good against a larger variety of enemies including vehicles. Crisis Suits, provided that they are run in Farsight Enclaves are easily a tier-five unit.
Not to mention they can get quite tanky giving one of them iridium and airfrag projector using the infantry relic that makes him ignore rend - 1 and - 2. Even in that case they are maybe a 4,5 stars to me.
@@TiredinIT there is a store on shapeways that sells a pack of 9ish for 30$. Yeah its steep, but it's still cheaper than buying 3 boxes of crisis for more blasters.

A tip for the video format: when you lay out the star units, keep a small thumbnail of them at the bottom next to the star count, and then float the next unit picture higher where you've got the unused space. That way at the end of the star list, the viewer has a quick reference of all units in each star tier.

Big misses imo are Piranha: yeah, it gets killed before doing much damage, but it's surprisingly hard to kill, and when it dies, it spawns two drones. Great for being annoying, holding objectives, and screening. Crisis Suits: five star units in a FSE army, due to abilities like the FSE boost to hit, strategem support out the wazzoo, and some nice pseudo relics. They end up being very cheap compared to what they can do. Kroot warriors: sorry, they might be theoretically okay but why would you ever take them over a strike team? Pathfinders: Siegler went undefeated at a major tournament with these. They're fragile but you can use them as drone controllers and they have marker lights. Devilfish: yes, it's not great, but it's a transport. Sometimes you do need to get fire warriors up to an objective.
One handy thing about pathfinders you forgot is that if your enemy charges them or the riptide next door and forgets about the fact they have photon grenades!
Nice format! Kinda a weird list though, seems to be about a year out of date, though obviously it's subjective. Piranhas are great for their points. Crisis Suits are now a very competitive choice when run as FSE. Aun'shi is easy 1-star because he is Vior'la
I’d love to see you do ad mec or knights. I’ve loved those units since I started playing the game and would love to see how you think they stack up, especially with some of the new things being added in.
I think you’re underestimating the value of good ballistic skill for the T’au. Hitting on a 4+ is really bad for a shooting faction with lower volume of fire. Longstrike + Hammerheads only need 1 Markerlight to fire at full effectiveness, which helps you diversify your targets. Moreover, casting Kauyon twice is incredibly valuable for a gunline, as it’s an additional round of rerolls to hit if you can castle properly.
Oh go on, we'll forgive you. I think the broadsides might be 5* when combined in a squad with command and control from a commander they are preeeeetty deadly, especially with the new relic weapon you can give the squad
They still lack FLY and have a 5” move, which is a gigantic downside in the Tau Empire’s arsenal and general flow of how the units function. It’s always going to be a big issue with them. They’re honestly like glass cannons, but they still have the “glass” part of them.
Going to put my 2 cents here as a Tau player: the two 'main' good septs are Tau, which you covered, and then Sa'Cea. Unfortunately, Vior'la isn't that great. Even expecting some kind of melee attack, its counter-intuitive to put him in your list: For the Greater Good will smash anything that gets into range. This is a me thing, but, I'd stick Broadsides in 5 stars. While the Heavy Rail Rifle for them is only okay, the relic version is superb. Also, for the about the same amount of points as a Riptide, you get 3 times as many Smart Missile Systems, which are obliteratively strong currently (and perhaps for 9th as well...). Also, you are forgiven.

It’s really interesting looking at older tier list videos and how the meta changes. Like with saying Devilfish are useless while all of the the top Tau lists in mid to late 2021 take 2 or 3 of them. Not saying this was wrong at the time it was released just that it’s fun to look at how the game adapts
Great vid, I think the addition of prototype weapons make the broadside 5 stars. 6 strength 9 shots that are ap - 4 and do d6 min 3 damage is pretty dame good. Plus the ion cannon riptide prototype is now like 6 stars lol
I find this very helpful because I'm considering getting into 40k as tau so nice to see what's actually worth looking into and whats not really great but maybe for campaigns
Question for Grueman - I want to start building a Tau list. I'm not worried about this list being competitive, but more a showcase of my favourite Tau models. The battlesuit models are by far my favourite looking models in the entire 40k catalogue. I was wondering if you had any recommendations on a 500 - 1,000 point list revolving around any and all battlesuit models! Thanks for the help, and keep up the great content!
I remember back in 4th edition when Devilfish was the way to go. I used to have one but only because back in the day it was REQUIRED for pathfinder squads to take one.
Nice review, but I think you got a few things wrong. You never mentioned the sa'cea markerlight vanguard that is very popular in tournament lists. Accurate character markerlights that can't be targeted as their characters that reroll to hit, and don't die like fragile pathfinders or marker drones Kroot hounds should be mid tier along with kroot. The kroot hounds are a very chap unit that is very fast, and that is their main strength. Need a unit to push enemy deepstrike out on your flank, a 20-24 point hound unit is perfect. Need to move 12+D6" to get an objective hounds are perfect particular if you will use such unit its much better it's a cheap hound unit. If they draw any fire power its better than it going into drones. Pathfinder drones was a missed opportunity. One big advantage is they allow you to bring more drone units without having lots of 2 model drone units. The recon drone is a 2 wound drone for only 2 points more than a shield drone. A shield drone has a 1 in 3 chance of surviving the 1st saviour protocol, the recon drone has a 100% chance of surviving. The pathfinder drones don't have to stay near the pathfinders, so the pulse accelerator drones can move near strike teams, increasing their range to 36" and more importantly their rapid fire range to 18" which gives them 3 shots at that range if a cadre fireblade is near. Its easy to miss, but Enforcers are generally taken for the cyclic ion blaster which the Coldstar commander can not take. Shadowsun is taken for her Genius of Kauyon ability not her firepower. Either double kauyon against a advancing for, or a Mont'ka then a Kauyon 2nd turn vastly ups the firepower from the main tau line. While out of range she can use the stratgem to give up her shooting to give a neearby battlesuit unit reroll to wound, eg. a riptide or even better a unit of broadsides with high yield missile pods, smart missile systems, and a seeker missile each. Very odd that the MissileSides were not mentioned, as before psychic awakening's magne rail rifles only the missile varient was seen. Lastly I think mentioned some of the more popular custom sept combos would have helped, particular hardened warheads and stabilisation systems, as they add to the tau firepower through either extra ap, or freeing up battlesuit slots from not having to take target lock allowing velocity tracker (+1 to hit fly) to be taken on both riptides and rail rifle broadsides. Negative to hit modifiers really hurt Tau, so anything that can negate that is very useful. On the whole it was a good review, but had some glaring omissions or inaccuracies. I just started ad mech, so would love a similar video on ad mech. PS. Take my critism with a pinch of salt, its impossible to know all armies so well, and your high subscriber count after only 8 videos shows you are doing things right and people like it. I also appreciate how hard and time consuming it must be to do these lists. Definitely a easy like and subscribe from me.
The xv8 Bodyguards are actually pretty nice now! They can jump between shots from Characters and other battlesuits. Guess what, Longstrike is a character! So you can make Longstrike unkillable!
I know this is old or for 8th but I like how alot of units have moved around because of 9th. Also dream of a new tau thing for 9th like buffs to the aliens, new aliens and please new cool troop things.
I generally find that in all "Stormsurge vs Imperial knight" - kind of videos are unrealistic, in all real games you will have marker lights which will make hitting easy, which then makes it easy to kill things. Most big models don't rely too heavily on their armies support as Tau do.
For a new person to the game and making a tau army, this does help out a lot. The only thing now is I'm got an army list id like to use using battle scribe and colour scheme but having so trouble sort out gear, drones, septs choice ect Just wondering if you or other people can help me out with it.
One thing to note about the breachers: guardians give strike teams a 6+ invuln. but it gives breachers a 5+. Also, Coldstars can't take CIBs, while Enforcers can. It's an expensive gun, but it's a pretty strong one.
and to think no one used to play etherials because of the very vorthos Price of Failure rule (Especially when 4th edition came around and their ability to increase leadership went from Table wide to an aura around them so you couldn't just hide them behind a rock so they didn't die and cause your entire force to run away.
Please make a Custodes video, I'm really struggling to pick units due to such a huge range of variety in the army line. On the plus side your video won't take too long to make :) also i won't criticise you unless you bad mouth the caladius or agree with the nerf rendered upon the poor Telamon :(. But seriously please i beg you! Heres a kiss for payment xo.
Seeing as the forgeworld models are supposed to be getting a rebalance in the next edition and also that the next edition is coming quite soon, I'll probably cover them after that. I don't exactly know when that'll be, but I'll try to get them out as fast as possible then.
You missed the combo for a crisis suit bomb with Cib and the farsight enclave strat from for the greater good supplement. You can have crisis suits hitting on 2s re rolling. Itll melt pretty much anything in the game with one volley.
I remember my 13/12/10 hammerheads blowing up a lot of my friends Land raiders with the S10 AP1 Railgun All you have to do is roll on BS3 so 4+ (7-BS) to hit, then roll S+D6 to pierce the armour, so 4+ vs a 14/14/14 land raider and then Roll a 5 or 6 on the Vehicle damage chart thanks to your AP1 to cause it to Explode. (I have not played 40k since 6th and I sold my Tau in 2010 but I now have tau again for kill team and have maybe enough for a 500 point 40k game so I wanted to see how they are now)
You should go from cheapest to most expensive in points. I feel the stars are good indications of how good the unit is and it would help new players like myself who are only looking to build a single army Also please do a group of marines next
How convenient, I've just been thinking of expanding my Kill Team into 40k with the new edition on the horizon. I have just over 500 points in 40k now that I have Shadowsun to be an HQ
I run a tau armored company and I definitely disagree that the devilfish and piranhas are 1 star. Toughness 7 isn't so bad when your entire army is toughness 7. but two things. The cadre fireblades ability affects all models not just infantry so a devilfish that's 9" away from an enemy will fire 16 st5 shots. or 12 at long range which is pretty good firepower for a transport. But on top of this, the devilfish has a fat body and can fly, making it a great shield for getting into the way of enemy forces and slowing them down, add that the drones can either jump out to seize objectives or they can stay on and just continue to speed bump even after the devilfish is destroyed and the devilfish is protecting way more than just the infantry inside. Piranhas are relatively cheap for such a versatile unit, especially in more objective games. But what really makes piranhas and devilfish stand out to me in my army is the fact that they both can take two seeker missiles. In my list I use hardened warheads and gifted pilots and my armored company tau can fire off 32 seeker missiles in the first turn. Even when I go second by turn 2 my opponent is usually playing catch up and usually without their main anti tank units. that said a single devilfish with breachers is definitely an easy target.
Pyranha are three star for me you have to build around them, but... they are a tad overpriced since you are a landspeeder with worse stats worse weapons no doctrine or startagems and at the same price range 52vs55pts. if you consider that they are 32 pts for 1 fast pulse canon +20pts of drones. they would be better if you could remove the drones would make them moreeasily usable. Devilfish suffer like every transport by being too costly , just too costly. they are at the price of a fire warrior squad for protecting a fire warrior squad. why not have 2 fire warrior squads?
Yeah seems like this. I got my Tau started back before covid and they looked ok with specific builds against types of enemies, but now they seem like a time a money sink that just won’t be much fun. Especially against Drukhari

Can you review the FW options for some of these armies too? I know they'll all be 4 star minimum but it does help in planning out armies.
I was thinking today about this review and voila and it suddenly apears in my recommended
Tyranids next?
It’s really interesting looking at older tier list videos and how the meta changes. Like with saying Devilfish are useless while all of the the top Tau lists in mid to late 2021 take 2 or 3 of them. Not saying this was wrong at the time it was released just that it’s fun to look at how the game adapts
As a new 40K player and testing the waters in Tau this was very helpful
Great vid, I think the addition of prototype weapons make the broadside 5 stars. 6 strength 9 shots that are ap - 4 and do d6 min 3 damage is pretty dame good.
Plus the ion cannon riptide prototype is now like 6 stars lol
@@ZK-lo5zq I'm sure he's talking about a unit of 3 broadsides
I find this very helpful because I'm considering getting into 40k as tau so nice to see what's actually worth looking into and whats not really great but maybe for campaigns
Question for Grueman - I want to start building a Tau list. I'm not worried about this list being competitive, but more a showcase of my favourite Tau models. The battlesuit models are by far my favourite looking models in the entire 40k catalogue. I was wondering if you had any recommendations on a 500 - 1,000 point list revolving around any and all battlesuit models! Thanks for the help, and keep up the great content!
Look into farsight enclaves, the new rules make them a suit army again. :) The 8 are awsome too if you like special mech's!
Looking at this now, it’s sad to see Tau fall so hard
Complete forgiveness!! Excellent video once again
I remember back in 4th edition when Devilfish was the way to go. I used to have one but only because back in the day it was REQUIRED for pathfinder squads to take one.
I’m surprised Sa’cea isn’t near the top of the sub septs. On paper rerolling for everyone of your squads sounds crazy strong.
Nice review, but I think you got a few things wrong.
You never mentioned the sa'cea markerlight vanguard that is very popular in tournament lists. Accurate character markerlights that can't be targeted as their characters that reroll to hit, and don't die like fragile pathfinders or marker drones
Kroot hounds should be mid tier along with kroot.
I'd love to see a genestealer cult codex review as I'm starting a GSC army. Thanks
Really good and helpful videos keep u the good work.
Upvote for drukhari next ?:D cheers
The xv8 Bodyguards are actually pretty nice now! They can jump between shots from Characters and other battlesuits. Guess what, Longstrike is a character! So you can make Longstrike unkillable!
Let's see some drukhari bro!!! Great videos keep it up!
Thanks so much! I think this Video ist usefull even during 9th edition.
An update for 9th would be awesome !
I know this is old or for 8th but I like how alot of units have moved around because of 9th. Also dream of a new tau thing for 9th like buffs to the aliens, new aliens and please new cool troop things.
Thanks for fixing an already really helpful video!
Very nice review! Are you going to do the Adeptus Mechanicus as well?
I just got a piranha, they’re really handy imho!
Wait wait? the Sniper drone controller guy is his own unit now? When I was playing sniper drones were new and he came with the squad
@16:32 I'm pretty sure it's 128 pt for taking just one missile pot and 143 pt for taking 2
Are you ever going to do a FW review?
Another well done review. Can you do one on the Adeptus Mechanicus units if you have the time?
what about Gue'ves units?
One Star
2:27 Aun’Va
3:27 TY7 Devilfish
4:28 Kroot Hounds
5:10 TX4 Piranhas
5:36 Tidwall Gunrig
6:16 Tidwall Shieldine
You should do a 9th edition one! I love the vids
The only thing now is I'm got an army list id like to use using battle scribe and colour scheme but having so trouble sort out gear, drones, septs choice ect
Just wondering if you or other people can help me out with it.
The devil fish was amazing because you could use them as walls against charges, but that got taken out
Could you do admech please
Tha is for reuploading! It’s no biggie but it’s cool that you did!
Great Video! Blood Angels next please!
Unfortunately a lot of this may change in a few weeks, but good video nonetheless!
I'd love a drukhari or eldar codex review. Love your vids btw
One thing to note about the breachers: guardians give strike teams a 6+ invuln. but it gives breachers a 5+. Also, Coldstars can't take CIBs, while Enforcers can. It's an expensive gun, but it's a pretty strong one.
and to think no one used to play etherials because of the very vorthos Price of Failure rule (Especially when 4th edition came around and their ability to increase leadership went from Table wide to an aura around them so you couldn't just hide them behind a rock so they didn't die and cause your entire force to run away.
can you do Dark Eldar ( durkhari)?
Dude who just got a laser pointer: I HAVE THE ULTIMATE POWER! I WILL BRING MY TEAMMATES WHITH THEIR HELP TO VICTORY!
T'au: yes
I really like these videos. I really hope we get primaris marines soon.
Excellent video! Would love to see your take on AdMech next.
what would you rate a pirahna?
Please make a Custodes video, I'm really struggling to pick units due to such a huge range of variety in the army line. On the plus side your video won't take too long to make :) also i won't criticise you unless you bad mouth the caladius or agree with the nerf rendered upon the poor Telamon :(. But seriously please i beg you! Heres a kiss for payment xo.
Here's a quickie:
So much *body oil*
I like your tier lists, any chance of an admech list?
Can blackstone fortress models be used in regualr 40k matches?
Yes
are you going to follow this videos talking about the forge world models ?
Seeing as the forgeworld models are supposed to be getting a rebalance in the next edition and also that the next edition is coming quite soon, I'll probably cover them after that. I don't exactly know when that'll be, but I'll try to get them out as fast as possible then.
@@Grueman Yeah I did not think it was not worth doing till after they where updated :-) but I will look forward to them when they come !
(I have not played 40k since 6th and I sold my Tau in 2010 but I now have tau again for kill team and have maybe enough for a 500 point 40k game so I wanted to see how they are now)
Do I hear FURI SOUNDTRACK?? I don’t know who you are, but you have now gained a sub.
Your videos are ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, Will you update IF 9th edition brings big big balance changes?
You should go from cheapest to most expensive in points. I feel the stars are good indications of how good the unit is and it would help new players like myself who are only looking to build a single army
Also please do a group of marines next
i'd really like to see Genestealer Cults get reviewed pretty please
Firesight Marksman - has the character keyword
Breacher Team - the guardian drone gives them 5+ invuln (6+ for strike teams)
How convenient, I've just been thinking of expanding my Kill Team into 40k with the new edition on the horizon. I have just over 500 points in 40k now that I have Shadowsun to be an HQ
AOS tier list ?
I now own some XV25s but I miss the XV15s I used to own twelve of.
seeing this later in the 9th edition year makes me sad like half of these would be bumped down a star or 2
Yeah seems like this. I got my Tau started back before covid and they looked ok with specific builds against types of enemies, but now they seem like a time a money sink that just won’t be much fun. Especially against Drukhari
Can we get Genestealers next?
