    Another great explanation, Colin! Thanks for helping us understand how another piece of Premiere Pro works.
    It would help me - and probably many others - if we could get a better understanding of when we ought to use 5.1 instead of merely stereo. For example, if we're only producing for UA-cam, then stereo only is enough, but for ... ??
    To take that one step further, maybe it would help to get an overview of all the various kinds of "end product" uses for videos made by Premiere Pro, and what might be the top-contender output settings for each?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 років тому

      UA-cam doesn't support 5.1 so it's not much use there.
      5.1 playback requires hardware to work, like a DVD or Blu-ray player so it's a lot of effort. Also, you won't hear it on your computer unless you have an interface with 6 separate outputs and 6 speakers. Just so you know, I've never created anything that needed 5.1.
      I appreciate the suggestion on creating an "end product" tutorial but there really isn't any specific formats that stand out. There are just too many formats to cover. I hope that makes sense.

    If I import a 5.1 file and a stereo file and combine them into one file and export using 5.1 settings, does that keep the 5.1 information on the 5.1 part of the file and keep the stereo file in stereo sound format? TLDR: Can I for example put a stereo audio track on a 5.1 audio file? EDIT you already gave the answer in the video i'm an idiot.

    I don't touch AAC 5.1 anymore because the channel mapping is slightly different for 5.1 as Dolby does L R C LFE Ls Rs and I believe AAC goes L C R LFE Ls Rs and after 5.1 you can run into some serious channel mapping issues just an FYI from a guy who was obsessed with 6.1 and 7.1! I liked 6.1's symmetry and felt less of a "hole" with a Center Rear Surround when watching movies! I always noticed when DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 was mixed well and some of the first Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mix's are just amazing. A good 7.1 mix can be downmixed to 5.1EX nicely and a good AV receiver could restore a lot of that 7.1 experience.
    I think it is a shame that Dolby and DTS aren't more permissive with provide even just basic AC-3 encoders with 5.1 as well as alternative options like 4.0/4.1 to replicate or restore quadrophonic mix's for example (of course I have just done 5.1 with no LFE or center use). DTS vs Dolby is a home theater food fight to avoid! Having said much about Dolby I like DTS's options to encode both 6.1 Discrete channel surround sound and Matrix channel the latter being similar to Dolby Digital EX which is a 5.1 channel mix with the "phantom" center-surround encoded out of phase and decoded by the AV receiver. I have yet to see options for even mixing 7.1 given the fact that admittedly the market for even 5.1 is slim but I will always be a fan of having those rear surrounds in addition to the existing surrounds mean not to be directly behind you but to the side and slightly to the rear.

    Thank you very much for sharing! Question, please:
    "When I export to AAC 5.1, a previously encoded movie audio track in DD 5.1 channels (that I needed to edit and synchronize in Premiere Pro), even if the "5.1" audio track appears correctly in the timeline (with all the different tracks visible and with their own waveforms), testing the exported multi-channel track on my Home Theatre, each track is "equally duplicated" on every single L, R, C, SL, SR track, while the LFE is mute!" So it's a kind of "fake" 5.1. Do you know why, please?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  4 роки тому

      My only guess is the mapping is different than what your receiver is expecting?

    Hi Colin. Thanks, that was a useful run through of 5.1 options. At the time Adobe dropped Dolby I was under the impression PPr said that Windows was licensed for Dolby. If that is true is there a way to harness that in the export flow?

    • @VideoRevealed

      There are several Dolby licenses but the professional license still needs to be purchased.

    It's be great if you showed a quick tutorial on audio monitoring in 5.1 when you have multichannel out. I have an ASIO device connected with 6 individual channel (speaker) outs and also a receiver connected via toslink through the MB audio out and NEITHER of them allow me to output 6 channels or 5.1 for monitoring while mixing. I can only see 2 speaker icons in the Audio Hardware preference pane even though it shows access to multiple channels. I know I'm just one tutorial (or several hours of fumbling) away from figuring it out!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  3 роки тому

      You need six powered speakers connected to your six outs on the ASIO interface. For control, look in the Audio Hardware preferences in Premiere Pro.
      My home theatre is in another room so I can't connect to it to show monitoring.

    Thanks for the video! I have the question of how to check the 5.1 audio with a home theater. Maybe its a beginner question, but as all systems seem to need Dolby or DTS, a plain 5.1 export seems kind of pointless since it can't be properly separated. Is there any specific method?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  4 роки тому +2

      I fairly certain your home theater will playback any 5.1 source, it doesn't have to be a licensed codec.

      @@VideoRevealed I made a movie in 5.1 with the 2017 Adobe Premiere that had Dolby support. Sounded perfect, correct audio separation. However, when I try exporting the movie in the later version of Premiere, with no Dolby, and using the 5.1 aac option, it also throws my center channel to the right and left speakers. I've tried every workaround I could, but nothing worked. So I have to do all my exporting from the Premiere that has Dolby. Quite annoying (and its keeping me from upgrading my OS since I'm pretty sure the old Premiere won't work with the new Mac OS.

    Hey Mr.Smith not sure if you have this issue but basically everytime i do Dynamic Link in premiere pro to after effects it works fine but then when i clean the disk cache in after effects because i need to save space the sound in premiere pro from the after effects composition stops working i always have to re import the composition again is there a solution to this? I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro/After Effects CC 2019. Is it better to just disable media cache in after effects to fix this issue?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  5 років тому

      The cache is saving the audio preview needed so when you empty it, Premiere Pro needs to rebuild it. The cache is not meant to be operated in that way, it's really a set it and forget it thing. My only suggestion is to add more drive space for the cache.
      In After Effects, the Disk Cache is much more important and can take a ton of drive space. The trade off is longer rendering if you don't use it, but I think it's worth it to have a separate SSD (minimum 128 GB) just for that.

    Hello Colin - Thanks for creating this tutorial... very much appreciated! I'm having a strange channel 'ordering' issue with exporting 5.1 with a H.264 codec in Prem Pro 2019. I'm wondering if you can help. In my time-line the mono tracks are ordered (L, R, C, Lfe, Ls, Rs) as intended. Likewise, the output summary, as I prepare to export, shows this same ordering. However, when I open the exported file in Quicktime, and click on 'Show Movie Inspector', the ordering of channels seems incorrect - it displays (C, L, R, Ls, Rs, LFE). To double check the file, I popped that same exported file back into my Prem Pro timeline, and things seemed fine (L, R, C, Lfe, Ls, Rs). Scratching my head a little here as to why Quicktime would display incorrect ordering. Should I just ignore this piece of metadata, or does the film's audio risk playing incorrectly in a theatrical setting? Much thanks for your time.

      Sorry for the late reply but it's very difficult trying to find comments I've not replied to.
      In your example my take is that QuickTime Player is ignoring what Premiere Pro is doing. My suggestion is to play the original file in a 5.1 environment and see who's correct. In my tests, Premiere Pro creates proper channelization.

    Great video thanx,
    I have a QuickTime with 5.1 AND stereo (on 7&8). I can import it and make a sequence, so I have Audio 1 with 5.1 and Audio 2 with left/right. All fine until here. But when I want to export exactly the same way, (Quicktime) I can only choose 5.1.. How can I export both, like it came in?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  3 роки тому

      Try a multichannel master with 9 channels. The first 7 are surround and the last two are stereo.

    • @blabbc
      @blabbc 3 роки тому

      @@VideoRevealed thanx very much, it helped. (But why 9 channels? 5.1+stereo=8, right?) However, I managed to put everything on multichannel, separate mono tracks and then did the mapping, I found that pretty complicated to figure out that I have to put channels on full left and full right etc. It would be pretty helpful to have an export option which says simply yes, you can export exactly what is on the timeline... for dummies like me;-)

    So as I understand it Premiere Pro CC as of may 2019 still had the Sound panners in it but it's just the Dolbe 5.1 format that is not available for out put.
