  • A perfect combination of freezing precipitation, winds gusting to 30, and temperature, led to a narrow strip of ice and black ice on Interstate 94 a few miles west of West Fargo, North Dakota. Traffic was moving close to Interstate speeds of 75 mph when it encountered this portion of highway. Video includes a semi losing control and jackknifing into the ditch, a few near misses, and a tipped semi blocking both eastbound lanes of I-94.
    Shot Description
00:00 - A semi loses control and jackknifes into the ditch
00:17 - Tow recovery of a semi blocking both lanes of I-94, the road was closed and detoured along the frontage road seen in the background of multiple clips

Road conditions are bad but at times this is caused by driving too fast for conditions. I was a commercial driver for 10 years during the 1980s. I seen this many times.

@doug3819 Honestly, it is always caused by driving too fast for conditions, up to and including failing to leave enough room to (hopefully) stop before becoming involved in a accident ahead of you. I reired in 2016 after 24 years driving OTR and not once was I involved in an accident on icy roads. Slowing down, leaving proper distance between myself and the person ahead of me played a big role, as well as shutting down if I thought road and weather conditions warranted it. Nowadays they all seem to want to be Billy Big Riggers, when in fact the industry is loaded with nothing but steering wheel holders.

I’ve been in this situation numerous times before. When freezing rain turns to ice it makes for treacherous and dangerous driving which I usually stay put at home in this situation

And even with all the cars & trucks off the side of the road, drivers are still just zippity do-daahing along at speed 🤷‍♀️

be sure to slow down for conditions, and slow down if you see traffic disruption ahead, and please move over or slow down if you are passing an accident, or police car...

      It was not expected

    • @markiefufu

It happens almost every year, though usually a lot earlier. This being a warmer year so far there hasn't been much, if any, snow and ice in the upper Midwest this season. So there isn't really any residual salt or chemicals on the roadways. And as was explained above, this storm wasn't expected, so the roads weren't pretreated.

North Dakota doesn't use much salt. At least rural where I live.

Can’t understand why people are slowing down. I don’t see anything except vehicles in the ditch so I’ll just keep going at speed. After all, ND folks know how to drive on black ice.
