The best comparison for us to hear it from a computer was the last demonstration as you quickly alternated between the two settings and shortened the duration between shots with the editing. That showed the difference that you were hearing in real time. Nice description of the procedure.
As a new PCP shooter, I would say you did a great job boiling down a process that seemed to be very complex. I love your videos Ted, and really admire you for sharing your expertise so freely.
That's the way you explain something. Short, sweet and only what you need to know. I was watching somebody else's tuning video and after 10 minutes of gobbledygook, I switched to this channel. Thank goodness.
Ted, that was a great practical demonstration of how just a few turns of the power wheel can make a big difference. Another thing I noticed is cocking the gun is so much smoother, not getting that same force as the spring is taking on the load right toward the end.

To much power...it sounds angry...when it’s right...it just sounds right, not too aggressive, quieter, less torque, smoother. You can definitely hear the difference. By the way I hope you have at least one more video coming on the .25 Avenger. I set my reg at 22-2400 psi, hammer spring at max, and it pushing JSB Hades 26.54s @ 914 dead nuts accurate. Really digging this gun bud. Take care and God Bless you and yours.
The most clear and easy to understand tuning explanation for the Impact I have seen. What's missing is a description of how that tricky adjustor for the regulator valve works. It has a big impact on air use and velocity. I have messed around with it a lot and have found it is really the secret to consistent velocities. I would love for that to get included in a tuning video. Thanks so much for spending the time to put this stuff out there. It really appreciated as many of us are working on this stuff in a bit of a vacuum.
For those whose ear is not attuned to the finer differentiation between the two settings, the Chrono numbers can be used to find the optimal HS setting. Simply shoot a string of shots at a particular HS setting that is consistent in speed with a very low standard deviation.
The initial sound is the same but a millisecond after your "tune" is way quieter. Can hear all the wasted air being shot out after the pellet when it's out of tune.
Oh you can definitely hear a difference in the sound I'm sure it's not as defined as in person but there's definitely a difference that was a good idea to play them back to back, back and forth like that though great tutorial sir
So true... Time ago i had a chinese Fox M22, and at full hammer (42 joules) there was quite not difference with 3/4 hammer in speed, a few fps, so I left it in 3/4 where start to decrease speed significally. Thanks.!! Greetings from Argentina...
I understand the "washing air" bit,... Just last night I was bored so I wondered why the baffles in the suppressor of my CO2 rifle were facing the direction they do so I reversed them to see what would happen. Some pellets were fine but pellets with longer skirts were flying all over the place from the air pushing at the pellet in a radical manner after the pellet left the rifle,... I could also see the difference with a huge puff of foggy CO2 air shoot out of the suppressor lol.
I've yet to buy a pcp. However, when I do I feel I'll be better prepared from all the knowledge I've sponged from you Ted. Genuinely, thank you so much.
Josh... I took a full year of video reviews to decide. Just because Ted used the FX brand know that they are SUPER slow at getting products out once Ted and Matt Duber show them. Like 6 mo or longer. Daystate are really good but expensive...yes more so than FX if you can believe that. Best way to choose your gun is: 1. Make sure it is regulated. 2. Know what you will do with it. Hunt. Pest control. Target. And k ow the distance you will be shooting at. 25m 50m 100m 200m. 3. Choose Caliber wisely. .177 is fine on calm days or indoors posting but you MUST be super accurate and only head shots. .22 is good for posting and hunting indoors and out. Still must be doing head shots but tolerates wind better. .25 Pesting Hunting Competing and now you can go for the heart lung shots. .30/.35 ... yeah those are more expensive ammo so I cant advise there but hunt and target would be great. If you can try a gun first that is a great way to go. Air gun gear show is also great resource. Good luck. Good hunting. Aim Small Miss Small.

Amazing videos! Can’t get enough. You should to a tutorial series from basics to expert with all the knowledge you’ve obviously compiled. Any suggestions for the novice who want to truly get in and learn this stuff?
Great video that shows the difference between a efficient shot and a excessive amount of air. Tuning for accuracy will soon be dead though. Mark my words the vibration has been tamed.
Thanks for the video, I just got a Impact .30 and my tune is not going well, so far no matter what settings I get a 30 to 45 fps spread with a magazine string.
Hi Ted. Thank you for the videos. Most helpful! I saw a compressor in the background of this video. Can you do a segment on compressors, tanks and hand pumps?
I just subscribe to your channel I am a new guy with my first pcp rifle and I really love to learn how to calibrate my rifle. Thank you for the information I really appreciate it.
Some do exactly as you do but reduce the hammer between 5-10%, Many like being closer to 10%.. This simulates being on the front side of the bell curve on an unregulated air gun.. Shorter duration but higher pressure when the valve opens.. Some say being closer to 10% also aids in reducing or eliminating hammer bounce influence.. The pressure is still so high in the plenum that a hammer bounce can't open the output valve a second time.. And only a portion of air is released from the plenum (similar to an un-regulated gun that releases only a portion of the air supply).. Also makes the regulator more accurate on the refill..
I now you said that the camera mic can't get the right sound but at the end when you edited it back and forth, you could hear the difference. This is the first time. Yes that helped. Thanks Ted. How does the wife like the Beard? Most guys wait til near the end of October to start growing our manly facial hair- looking forward to that Tirty Point Buck... On Wisconsin.
Thanks for the video Ted, great as always! I am just about to pick up an impact and start tuning from scratch, my planned methodology is as follows and I wanted to run this past you and everyone else for a sense check? I plan to max the valve adjuster and hammer spring and only adjust reg pressure while shooting different groups, once I’ve found the best group/velocity, I will increase reg slightly and then reduce hammer spring until i see the drop in velocity and leave it there and do the same with the valve adjuster. How does that sound? Just looking to find the most efficient way of starting from scratch without wasting too many slugs (likely hybrids in .22). Everything is harder to get hold of over here in the UK so don’t want to waste any ammo! Many thanks for any response!
Thanks for this video, and all that you share with the community. I'm new to PCP, just bought my first rifle a month ago and I love it, a .30 Impact X w PP/600mm/580cc. I watched you video on the various. 25cal barrels a few days ago but I don't think you mentioned the twist rate of the .30 that you were using as "the standard" to compare the .25's against. My question (finally! lol) is: can you tell me what the twist rate are the stock .30 600mm barrel that come on new (Feb2021) Impact X MKII and are they call Superior STX "slow" barrels or something else? Thank you for your time.
I hear a little less of a heavy bang. A higher pitched and lighter sounding smack. Untuned sounds like the valve is hitting the frame. Tuned sounds like the hammer hits the valve, but the valve doesn’t hit the frame.
Ted, as I value your opinion, I'm about to buy a Crown with boyd's thumbhole stock and want to focus on 2 different areas. 1) rats and birds at close distance 10m - 50m, and larger birds, bunnies and foxes out to 75m. The closer in game I want to use Hades and the 177 pellets with a smooth twist barrel to protect the round going through the animal and into potentially a building or roofing, and a 30cal slug with slug liner for better ballistic impact more out in the open and over longer distances. Am I on the right track or being over cautious? I know you get heaps of these types of questions, hope you get to see this one and feel free enough to comment. Cheers from Australia.
Hi thanks for your so interesting video ! After selling my 22LR I decided to buy a PCP. I am very drawn to the FX Impact MKII which I find very beautiful, but here in France there are a lot of unhappy customers who return their gun to the distributor ... Is the Impact Crown less of a problem?
Cannot thank you enough Ted, very understandable and makes so much obvious sense now. And yes, can just barely tell the sound difference on the tube, but it’s there. And you can probably feel it also when you shoot. A critically damped system. I’ll be trying it out on my Avenger .22 with Crosman LHP22 14.3gr at 850ish fps, and reg around 1500psi probably. Don’t need a cannon like your FX’s but it would be nice to have someday! Many thanks again for all your time and effort. Go Badgers!
Hi Ted this is a very exciting video for me as i currently have a fx streamline .22 fac and i wanted to get the jsb 18gr up around 860-880 but my hammer spring maxed out at 860 !! is it bad to have the hammer spring maxed out ?? should i up the reg a little and reduce the hammer spring ?? only problem with stream line is no reg gauge wonder if i can wing it with 1/4 turns at a time ?? thanks
Well, that was very interesting. I just purchased the Kervan Airboss K1 25 cal. It’s unregulated. I’m not sure if the hammer spring can be adjusted. If the hammer spring can be adjusted and there’s no regulator, does that mean you cannot perform this adjustment on a rifle?
Thanks very much that would be the most user friendly tune I have seen , some of the tunes on UA-cam are complicated and scary . What setting on the Hamer spring did you move it to get the difference.cheers Dean
Ted, i am interested in this technique, for efficiency and to avoid deforming my valve pin. To achieve the best results with a .22 700mm barrel should i remove the silencer? Am i listening for muzzle report or the sound of the action? I own a db meter, would you say that it is a pitch or increased db?
The Bearded Ted! A rare species of Wisconsin apex predator. Prefers small invasive birds and cheese curds. Occasionally will be seen stalking grain silos, for what we assume is his grain intake. The species appears to be omnivorous but is rarely seen without a bangstick. A female of this species has never been spotted in the wild so scientist believe this male is a lone survivor of a long gone group of Bearded Teds. We hope he one day finds a Bearded Ted Lady to keep him company with his squirrels and barn cats.
You show the power wheel is set at "Max". Do you also max out the hammer spring adjustment as a part of the process? Great start on the beard, perhaps a 2/10 on the Edeleman (Julian) scale :). I've had mine since 79' and still can only manage 6/10 on the Sklar (Leland) scale of grey beards. Remember the tip given by Mr Kringle in Miracle on 34th St "...the cold air helps it grow". Thanks for all you do!
Great information! Can you please give me an idea, how much regulator pressure of FX impact for shooting .22 caliber slugs .27 gr? I’ll try to tune hummer later. Thank you.
Question, would a ten shot string with the least speed deviation between a 10 shot string be a good indicator you are in tune and would it parallel your sound tune ? My hearing isn’t what it use to be at 70 is why I’m asking .😁
Great video. But would this apply to slugs too? You want that extra air pushing the slug as fast as it can. So I assume there has to be some wasted air.
I have a question. I have a maverick, can I achieve this by tuning for maximun speed on power wheel #7 and then bring it down to power wheel #6? Is like 12 to 15 fps difference. Thank you!
Always wide open. I fine the valve adjuster to be useful for low-energy tunes (below 20 ft/lbs), but unneeded for those who aren't limited by governmental energy restrictions. Other's may have found it useful to have it engage the valve stem (setting 1-3 bars), but for me that just adds another variable to try to balance. I get tighter shot strings without it. All my guns (.22 --> .35 | 30ft/lbs --> 130 ft/lbs) have the valve stem adjuster set at 4+ bars.
Surely it defeats the object of saving air by not using the exhaust valve. If you turn the valve in (stiffen the spring) on your original 920 fps then you will be closing the valve quicker which will get you down to your needed 900 fps. How I see it is you need to close your exhaust valve as quickly as possible after the given amount of air is injected.
Been pondering this question about the valve..finally found the answer.. I tried a tune with hybrids after a few months of shooting pellets with the original tune from Jeff up in Sparta when I bought my mk2 impact..I tried to get it back to what he had given me. I think his pellet tune was awsome..Tomorrow ill get it back to what he gave me with your help here.

Thank you.
Find a speed they like and tune your gun to that speed for even better groups.
I am downloading this. That's how good at this video is.
Love the beard Tedd it suits the hunting well lol
Question, would a ten shot string with the least speed deviation between a 10 shot string be a good indicator you are in tune and would it parallel your sound tune ? My hearing isn’t what it use to be at 70 is why I’m asking .😁
Hot Chihuahua, probably more effective.
Hard paying attention, watching with that glorious beard Ted!
Wow super interesting!
What backstop are you using..? I didn’t hear any ping.. & thanks for the info I’ll be listening out for the hammer release
BEARD!!!!!!! Yes! The extra hair is proven to give more power and accuracy! 😉😅
Ted,,,I would put a pair of Saftey glasses on
Great video. But would this apply to slugs too? You want that extra air pushing the slug as fast as it can. So I assume there has to be some wasted air.
Well explained Ted! KnifeMaker
Hi ted just a quick question.... do you need to clean the barrel on the fx impact from new and how many pellets to lead the barrel regards scooter
Thank You Teddy✌
Thanks, Ted! Say, what's that squirrel doin' stuck to your face?? :)
Very helpful thanks
I have a question. I have a maverick, can I achieve this by tuning for maximun speed on power wheel #7 and then bring it down to power wheel #6? Is like 12 to 15 fps difference. Thank you!
My 6 year old Kalibrgun Cricket still smokes em all!!
Maybe at 50 yards. Past that...nothing beats the Impact.
Really?? Does it smoke a pipe or just cigarettes?
I own an impact and a couple of crickets.....
Hi Great Job explaining that . Just stay the same on too much fun on smoking . All the best love and happyness.
Great info Ted! Looks like you've been tuning a while given the beard...
You should have turn on voice call out on for the FX phone App
great video, I need advice I have an impact .25 with 34 g jsb, 600 barrel which configuration would be the best for you? tks
Thanks Ted, could you share what is the valve adjustment I.e. line 4 or wide open?
Hey conner mc Gregor when get into airguns ...lol nice lesson
