2015 Yamaha FX Cruiser SVHO Jet Ski Engine Repair Part 4 of 5

  • Les, the Canadian Swamp King, ran into a bit of trouble with his 2015 Yamaha SVHO FX Cruiser personal watercraft jetski when it suddenly quit on him. So naturally we volunteered to take a look at his engine and see if we can fix it for him, as it is our winter break, after all.
    This video is Part 4 of the series. Here we split the crankcase cover and determine the extent of the damage, and possibly the cause of the water ingestion.

    Good job and nice filming. I'm an hobby mechanic and have restored PWC engines looking much worse than that. It must be much cheaper to repair compare to replacing the engine. Especially if you volunteer with you labour . Good luck and looking forward to future videos.

    Can someone answer this question, I have a Stator issue with a FX SVHO unit and am not necessarily planning on removing the engine to get it out
    Can you remove the stator housing with the bearing and seal out of the transfer shaft ? Will it slide over the shaft to remove the housing or is it an absolute must to remove the transfer shaft ?

  • @johnmorgan1677
    @johnmorgan1677 6 років тому +2

    So what was the problem? That was a emulsion (mix of oil and water) you won't get that from water getting into the engine whilst it wan not running. You will only get it whilst it was numbing. Have you checked who serviced last ? I would suggest the engine sucked in the water.

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  6 років тому

      You're right. We don't think it got in from towing, any more. Still a mystery as to how the water got in. But Les (the owner) died recently, so the project is on hold.

      3ftDeep Were the cracked cylinder heads on 1800 svho or natural aspirated engines? And what years?

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  5 років тому

      The one we were working on was a 2015 SGHO engine. The other two that we are aware of were around the same year or 2016 models. We think it may be a cooling issue as the machines may not have been adequately cool down before getting hot and then shutting them off. One machine that was spared, routinely ran the engine in cool water for five minutes before shutting it off.

    Question on the part of video omitted where you "loosened the transfer shaft" .Using the tool to hold the Cam shaft in place, did you use a 12mm allen wrench to loosen the special nut first to back out the transfer shaft second, or did you use the shaft removal tool with the spline teeth to remove the whole transfer shaft? Or is it the special nut that completely backs out to allow the transfer shaft to be removed. I've broken a couple tools at this point attempting to loosen the transfer shaft and special nut....hmm

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  3 роки тому

      To be honest it's been a few years and this is the only Yamaha I have taken this far apart so I can't remember all the details I do recall the transfer shaft took heat to help break the thread locker and a big breaker bar to get it to break loose. I think the green thread lock used during assembly is stronger than the red so heat is required for disassembly.

      We’re going to produce a video on that topic sometime this year, but it’s not a simple question to answer. All three major manufacturers do a very good job. Kawasaki‘s have a good hull and are good for longer distances and chop, but they’re relatively bulky. Yamaha’s used to be reliable, but we found a lot of serious engine problems with the more recent SVHO models. Sea-Doos have been very reliable over the past 12 years, and in our opinion have far superior looks and ergonomics.

    Do you find the Bombardier or Yamaha stuff easier to work on for a home garage kinda person?

    • @3ftDeepChannel
      @3ftDeepChannel  6 років тому

      Good question. We've noticed some things are easier, and some are harder. For example, it's easier to take the Yamaha engine out of the hull, but more difficult to take the engine apart because of the driveshaft coupler. So getting the engine apart is much more expensive with Yamahas. Overall, for most jobs I'd say they're about the same.

      All the valves were not bent just the four in the cylinder with the damaged piston the piston skirt broke which caused the piston to flop around in the cylinder and bend all four valves the valves in the other three cylinders were not damaged. We figured the cracked head caused water ingestion in the oil which caused a lack of lubrication and this piston skirt was the first failure point.
