- Kindle Direct Publishing is introducing a new storytelling option: Kindle Vella. With Kindle Vella, you can self-publish serialized stories, one short episode at a time. Episodes can range from 600 - 5,000 words. In the next few months, readers will be able to access all Kindle Vella stories in the Kindle iOS app and on Amazon.com.

So, in other words, it is like Royal Road, Wattpad, Fictionpress, etc websites that allow the writers to publish a chapter whenever they have it ready, but the major difference is Vella will help earn royalties. Interesting.

The best site to publish books in chapter or whatever is still Wattpad. They won't pay you anyway.
This looks like a great way to get a story out in segments without having to wait until it's completely finished. Plus, it will be a good way to test story ideas for KDP.
This is exactly what I've been looking for as an author and personally I think this has the potential to change the industry in a very good way.
By shortening the reader's attention span, promoting lazy authors and filling up Amazon pockets.

I just published my first episode! "Feral Hearts" should be available soon. This is a wonderful way for new writers to get their stories out there. It also makes it easier to have multiple series running at the same time. I'm looking forward to publishing new episodes every week. Two thumbs way up Kindle!

It would be better if you could actually read it on a Kindle (as the name implies).
Also, Amazon needs to put some form of advertising opportunity for authors in place, the way they do for KDP authors. Right now, your best course of action is doing promos via various groups on Social Media or on sites like Vellavated, because most of the book promotion sites don't allow you to promote Kindle Vellas. At present, I think the majority of people reading on Vella are still authors reading other authors' work.
Lastly--and my biggest problem with Vella--the primary/secondary categories available are extremely limited. As a Horror author, I'm dismayed that I have to lump my work into the "Paranormal" or another such category that doesn't accurately reflect the story content. It's not fair.
As an author very excited about this new model of publishing through kindle. As a consumer, EXTREMELY disappointed you're using a micro-transaction model with an in-app currency. Hiding the true cost from readers is just another way to swindle folks out of their money without them realizing how much they are actually spending.
This should really be looked at logically from an industry standpoint. Consumers are already wasting all kinds of money on multiple other microtransactions. It's just how the market flows right now. I think what kindle is doing is adapting the industry to the market. Why spend your mindless online transactions on some useless impulse buy you found, when you could just read a book, and possibly change your whole perspective after reading the book? It's also really helpful to the author you support. Books are good. Be smarter about your purchases, if you don't want to be consumed by micros, don't browse an online shopping market where literally everything is micro now. But if you are going to... It may as well be a book, yeah? I only see this as a win win.
I think especially since the first episode is free, it's always a win win. Why would you buy the second episode of a book if you're not into it? I've bought several books at full price that I ended up not really enjoying. This is the perfect way to connect readers with the genres they seek but maybe didn't know they were looking for. And in the end, the authors get the pay they deserve for their work of art. Win. Win.
When is Vella becoming available outside the US? I'm a short story writer from Brazil and I'm interested in creating content for episodic releases like this!

After deciding to take a chance on beta Vella and working my butt off on episodes, I couldn't submit any because I'm Canadian. My Vella is English. have a US Amazon kdp author account. (That didn't matter) I need a date for when I can release my series prequel, Vella. I was excited about this. I'll decide what I'm going to do with this episode based on the response. It's an upload into US KDP. I must be IP address blocked. If I'm given a reasonable date to promote, I'll continue writing episodes and wait to release on Vella. I'm just one person, but I'd like to believe whoever is running Vella knows every author matters.

In the early 20th century some authors would release stories chapter by chapter to the old pulps. That was how Edger Rice Burroughs and (I think) Isaac Asimov got started. Amazon is just taking an old idea and repurposing this. I doubt the authors are going to get much money from this, but it MIGHT help them get attention. Don't know if I'm going to try it, but will keep it in mind.
I Honestly think this is amazing and a great way for authors to have creative freedom to write what they want without having to have a publisher dictate what they can and can’t put in their stories.

I am not sure about it all but will give it a try. The writing is fairly easy to do a small amount at a time.

So it would seem the definition of episode here is pretty loose. It seems more like unlocking pages.
In this it says that readers can start a story for free. But it says on the fine print that the first THREE episodes are free. An episode of 3k words is about 14 cents royalty for the author. My usual 90k books would earn me 4.20 in royalties, compared to the 1.52 that I normally get. So, what's the catch? There's no way that you're tripling royalties for authors.
Did u find out what the catch was? And do you think customers would actually pay for this type of thing?

I hate reading on the phone or in the laptop. As a heavy Kindle PW reader, I will sleep on this until they make it available in ereaders.
If you wanna give it a go that bad, just get a tablet. They’re easier to read ebooks on. Hell, Amazon’s fire tablets are dirt cheap.
What are the size/dimensions for the cover templates? I live outside the U.S and i'm a cover designer, am I able to find it?
My designer fixed my ebook cover since I am going to try it out on Vella. The cover needs to be 2mb or less and 1600×1600, no wording.

If you have an editor who will work with episodic writing, then there's no reason you can't use it. Or you write the whole story, get it edited then post each episode.

So does your story have to be exclusive to Kindle? Looks to me like it's a total rip off of Radish, which uses the same exact format.
Hey Robin! No, I don't believe it has to be exclusive, but it needs to be new material. So you can publish it to Kindle Vella, and then to Radish, as well.
@@SarraCannon All over the web, authors are arguing as to whether this is exclusive to Vella or not. That's an important piece of this puzzle.
@@sydneyjanebaily7312 from what Amazon is saying it doesn't have to be exclusive but it can't be in book format or free anywhere else. so you can only Publish it elsewhere in the same chapter by chapter format and it has to be paid not free and has to go up on vella first

The general consensus seems to be yes, from what I've seen. Here's hoping that's accurate. I'm definitely interested in trying KV, but once the book is complete, it feels like it'd be better off as KU.

this is annoying, i'd rather wait until a book is finished and purchase the finished book. I don't want books to become microtranstactions, paying for each chapter, thats just dumb. Also doing the math, it seems more expensive to do it this way rather than just buying a book already finished.

Looking at the contract... you don't need to worry. I don't think many Royal Road authors will be using this one.
