I enjoy these real world questions - dollars and cents. Would be cool if you could do a vid on what would you keep with a 5k 10k 20k setup?
Good auestion
+1 on this. Good question.
+2 here. Very curious on this take.
+3 here
PQ is over 5k so 5k budget can't be an option :)
Having watched A LOT of your videos, it's clear you don't own gear for the sake of it. You genuinely hear and understand what each tool offers and how each tool shapes sound. I can't say that about some other UA-cam mix engineers. It's a rule I'm following for my own gear. Can't buy anything new until I've mastered what I already have AND only if I can make a case for it usefulness to me.
Thank you!
Thank you, David! Please, make a video of your daily routine, It's very interesting
800€ Laptop
400€ Apollo interface
350€ sundara headphones
150€ mono speaker
800€ brauner Classic Mic
2500€ total (bought everything from eBay)
That tells me everything 😅
Killer setup brother! You've worked really hard and deserve all of your success! 🎶🎹🎶🎸
Would have been cool to see how much acoustic treatment and plugins would have come to on top of everything in your studio since you took us this far
Fantastic studio bro 😍
Low key flex, Dave. 🤣🤣 You deserve it bro for how hard you work at this and you didn't even count camera, lighting and stuff for the UA-cam videos. This is great you have a fantastic studio and its giving something us to aspire to.... In my studio total cost....is about $43K.... I'm a musician so I have more guitars, synths, and keyboards. I've spent over $2K in cables so there is no way you spent $3K in cables. Definitely do the. live stream.
Such a great taste in gear!
Congratulations for your success. Hard work pays back. Let's go!
I'm drooling yet I'd stumble through all of that ! How do you pick and choose when you have so much optionitus lol it's a headache fantasy heaven
WOW! You said years ago in a video that Softube plugin emulation of the TubeTec,C1b and the compressor where the best emulation of those hardware but I didn’t believe anything could beat Acustica Audio in emulating any hardware so I didn’t even bother to try UNTIL TODAY and this is the first ever that Acustica Audio lost in an emulation shootout! My head is blown. When you’re right, you’re right and you were right David
We want the battle between the Vari-Mus!!!
Pretty please!
Impressive collection no doubt. But from the financial aspect, it's not very unimaginable to put this together over the course of 10+ years. Really, a person making say $100k a year take home, could do this in 3 year if they lived like a college student in a decently affordable market. Not happening in LA or NYC but, it's actually very possible. Without pocket watching we know Dave makes $$$$ so, kudos to you dude. That's awesome. Thanks for letting us in!
This is one of my favorite videos of this year so far. Thanks David!
Hi David, great studio, but you also got rent, daw and software, furniture, bills for electricity, gas maybe for driving towards your studio complex, and drinks, food for clients, toiletpaper and cleaning stuff the whole year... Working in the creative arts is not one job, those are several and multitasking ones... People underestimate that... Good to see you doing good, cheers, Jeroen Simons, Independent, ex-- EPICA. Ps. Don't forget updates for software, or broken gear, maintenance....
Most of it holds it resell value which is great about hardware
David, we all appreciate how much work goes into all of your videos. Mixing/mastering plus doing all this on the side, please don't overdo it and take care of yourself. Much love, you're the man 🤘
A formidable rig, David, the fruits of all your labours, well earned! It's interesting to reflect that even though this is an eye-watering price tag, it's a fraction of what a pro-level studio of yesteryear would have cost to set up. I remember an old interview with Trevor Horn talking about getting the first Fairlight synthesizer back in the '80s. That one unit cost as much as your entire setup! As far as my studio goes, I'm going to be in-the-box for a while yet, I think! 😂
All choice pieces of gear. Seriously amazing. Had to wear a bib while watching the video to keep the drool off my clothes.
Nice : ) I also never did the math but I made an inventory list for the insurance. Otherwise less high-end EQ's & compressors here but possibly more guitars, amps, synths and old Lexicon FXs [224XL, 3x 300]. My later Drawmer purchases [1973, 1976] got triggered by your excellent demo videos from a few years back. Gainlab Dictator here as well, not absolutely fundamental but very nice to have
every unit deserve you david 😁, i would like if one day you start a serie of studio setup for different budget from 1K to 100k for exemple
What a treat!!!!!
Your mixes translate so well on UA-cam.
Dave, Please do live stream and let us know when and time. I love comparison videos like I have mentioned. This was a great video. I love it. Thank you
,,, and yes, please do a live stream mix/chat. Cheers.
Yup! I figure it was around this. My Home studio is up there also but I own PIano's,Synths, Gtr's. Amps... Instruments which add up quick as well. LIike you said, you don't do this overnight! :) Thx David ( I'm still in my PJ's just waking up for the day, so i don't have that # as of this minute, I guessing as of this minute without going into Studio! approx. $40K )
David, you're the man! Unbelievable setup. Love your content!
Thank you! 🙏
That was a killer thumbnail! Ha ha haa!
That setup is off the hook! Thanks for sharing David!👍
Every bit earned and well understood. Thanks man, I've wondered that for about six years now. Cheers.
Thank you!
Great collection for sure, everything has a place!
Thanks so much, learning so much from your videos. I would love to see something like, 8 preamps for recording, one stereo EQ and one stereo compressor for mixing and two stereo mastering units for home recording analog goodness, max 8-10 rack units, budget no concerm and it’s your summer house studio far from your existing pro-studios.⚡️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👋🏼
A plethora of organized ear candy machines with you as the Wizard of Oz spinning, molding & hammering all those textures to varying tastes.
I have a hybrid setup similar to yours with almost the same number of outboards gears and few things in common, but with less expensive pieces.
Total cost for my setup is 45k.
Congrats David, you deserve it!!!!
Thanks. Love the channel. Would be great if you could talk about the acoustic treatment in your studio
Good taste in gear here. The Vari Mu shoot out would be fun...
Hello David, the equipment comparisons are very entertaining; One suggestion, I wish you could upload the audio files of your comparisons so I could download and listen to them without the limitations of Internet sound "quality." I have never understood why hardware manufacturers don't do it, it is the best promotion they can get (being able to listen to their equipment!!!)... Greetings,
Many companies do. But besides that, there are multiple reasons as to why some decide not to. For once, unethical competition. The test files can be manipulated and re-uploaded to make a unit sound worse, it has been done before. In my case (besides the fact that I'm not a company making gear) the audio I use is 99% from my clients and I have permission and license to use it in my videos, not to re-distribute it.
You're right, either I or the auto translator didn't express it well! It is true, it is not necessarily about making a comparison between equipment from different brands, but about the processed and unprocessed signal of a specific and well-made equipment as you do, ensuring that there is no deception with volumes and other tricks. It's true, that's what I was referring to, the other thing will be very useful and legitimate, but, as you say, it lends itself to misunderstandings/interpretations/manipulations....I hope that this time the "AI" (IA) translates well what I want to say!!!
Your enthusiasm for the subject is what keeps me interested! Also, the Stam SA-4000 in your new studio is also epic! Did you move the opto comps?
Right! I forgot about that, insane comp as well. I sold the 2A and 3A I wasn't using them and I needed channels
@@mixbustv so what is your goto compressor for smooth vocals then? Like in a ballad?
Amazing video as usual, love that you know your stuff able to present us all these tools to us. And used your 10000hrs effectively to help us and keep us inspired.
One of your videos showed me how good that fatso is, real slept on. got me wanted to cop that thing.
Haven't been in your studio but I'm sure it sounds really good with them panels which look like thier from Gik acoustics which are soo good.
It's a lot of units, but if you know when and how to use it it's worth every penny. I would like to hear one time Neve 542 tape simulator on a mix or just some "raw" track, how it changes the sound; you talked one time how amazing this unit is so that would be nice. Amazing gear arsenal ... 👍
Dude you got a ALOT of gear. I don’t know too many besides Joe Barresi. JJP maybe. I’m sure there’s some others I’m not mentioning but you’ve got to be up there
Definitely interested in a VariMu shootout. Went for a HCL VariS and I absolutely love it, especially the option to switch from triode to pentode.
Also would like to hear your thoughts if you’ll be sticking with the PQ or if you plan on going for a Buzz REQ 2.2 or a Maselec in the future?
Whats good Dave! I've been away for awhile as life's been pretty busy for me. Just checking in. Nice to see your channel growing. How you like the Argosy Console halo desk at your new studio? I still have mine that i bought back in 2020. Built like a tank.
That’s a nice amount invested! 😅 I have a humble $7000 set up, most of which is tied up in samplers, but I also have a small format mix desk and only 3 pieces of rack gear at the moment.
Dang, your studio equipment alone costed more than the house I bought back in 2014 for $117k in NC 😁. Quite the impressive gear collection you have though.
Isa One ($600), Adam Audio A7x (discontinued, A7V are $1600 a pair), SM ProAudio TC02 (discontinued, it was 'bout $400), AKG C214 ($300), 4xSM57 (4x$100), AKG drumkit mic pack ('bout $400), RME Multiface II + HDSP PCIe card (discontinued, 'bout $2000 when new, but you can find them used for 'bout $200 now), Sony MDR 7506 and Presonus FaderPort + PC 'bout $1000. Totals 'bout $7000, not counting cables and acoustic treatment.
Thank you for this video. We all love to talk about gear and prices. 👍
Beautiful Setup!
Nice!!! 🔥
Out of all that I have 3 of your pieces. Only $128,404 to go!! 😭😭😭😂😂
Absolutely beautiful 💯🔥🐐
I was wondering allot about your electrical system in the building if your running at least 100 amps a what are your electricity costs. Where is your electricity actually coming from in your area is it reliable and clean power.
22k Home studio with no treatment : 2 MacBooks M1 Pro 4 lg 5k 2 madiface pro 1 avid mbox studio Focal monitors 2 sm7b 4 mdr7506 + $$$ in software (all daws and plugs)
Aaaaand imma gonna stay in the box x-D haha ....Great studio David, thanks for the tour
Something I noticed you didn't cover here and that's what do you do for feeding AC power to things? UPS's, power centers, filtering ? Each rack independent of another? And how do you deal with ground loops? That kind of cost can get up there. For me I'd rather have an UPS blow itself out to save a few thousand dollars worth of gear. My computer is on an UPS that regenerates the incoming AC to a true sine wave. And everything else gets filtered incoming AC.
I covered in previous videos. But now it expanded but same thing. The power is divided in 3 blocks, each block has its filtering and it's remote controlled, so depending on what I'm doing I turn on 1, 2 or everything without having to go behind racks. Plus now the right gear has it's on switches individually, I didn't need the extra switches but it was more efficient to sacrifice one rack space at the bottom because I couldn't put anything there too deep because of the cables and because it's slanted. I never had noise or hum or ground issues, that the power grid and it's a problem if you do have that
@@mixbustv Thanks much David. I tend to get hung up about proper power supply to equipment. Can't be too careful.
If you were to start over again, what would your first audio processing hardware be?
this is the question man, this is the question !
542s and NgBus or Stam 4K
SSL Fusion.
Fantastic and very honest. I think the question is if a good producer (like you) can take the money back. So if someone who knows the job and invests A LOT can pay the cost and make a living. I've seen many studios going out of business with good producers!
In anything in life, I don't buy then hope to make the money back. That's how you go broke. You buy the assets that will make you money, you make the money, then invest half back into more assets. If you can't buy it twice, you can't afford it. Live like this and you should be fine. You want a car? Don't buy the car, buy something that will pay for it. Double. Then buy the car.
@@mixbustv It really depends since there are many different parameters.
One crucial aspect is the need for additional funds to purchase assets, often leading to the necessity of taking a loan, a financial decision that can be fraught with risk.
Another key consideration is the client's price point. It's a well-known trade-off that superior services often come at a higher cost, potentially decreasing the target group.
A fantastic restaurant targets fewer people than a cheap one; more people stay in cheap hostels than in 5-star hotels, etc.
I've seen many studios going broke not because they were not good but because of a lack of demand at some time or unpredictable circumstances. For example, many rehearsal studios closed after the pandemic. Many musicians willing to pay for mixing and mastering lost their jobs and could not pay or disbanded.
I work in academia and avoid costly things that I don't need (I don't want a car; I have never had a loan). So I admire that your studio goes very well, but others who could not have these assets or others with even more expensive equipment went out of business because of unpredictable things and changes in the market and the economy in general.
Best advice and for free!❤

I got around 80k in mics, 40k in preamps, 60k in eq and compression, 10k in conversion, 8k in monitoring, and about 100k in instruments.
Perspective: the total price invested in gear in this video is much more capability, for less money, than was possible just a few decades ago (adjusting for inflation since then). Actually pretty nuts what one can get nowadays. If someone can accept worse build quality and worse resale value, certain items can also be matched performance-wise for less.
A few decades ago it would have payed for a console and that's it :D
Very nice. The video makes me dreaming LOL
Thanks for this updated studiotour I really enjoyed it. What would be your opinion about buying the MOTU`s in 2024 (actually probably only used) for a studio?
I just added the 3rd 16A. MOTU sounds better and has better real life specs than most highly promoted converters. I trust a company that doesn't change they line up every other week
It's so crazy to look how much each things cost when you have been building slowly slowly... the total was not what you suddenly dropped on it... but over the years.
Never feels like you have spent that much on everything but it happens without you realising.
I have to say, I thought this would be more.
As I make a list of a starting studio it's very hard to say bellow 50K if including enough analogue units to warrant even adding analogue to it.
Monitoring is always a large amount and the most important thing to spend on first and it's then still hard to stay under 20K even with almost no analogue.
Any idea you plugin and software total?
Thank you
🤔I'm interested in how you manage the cables, how you've laid them so that you can always move them when another chain is needed(Or do you use special distributor sockets.). Whether you have labeled them or whether you use certain colors. I think you must have laid a few kilometers/miles of cable there.
I absolutely, royally SUCK at cable management. I'm the worst. I started all pretty and all, and then because of how many new units get here, the reviews, expanding, everything is a mess :D I do my best but it's impossible.
@@mixbustv Then I wish you good luck that you never suffer a cable break and have to search. ✌
@@mixbustvI suggest obtaining a friend who has untreated anxiety and OCD, and have him come over… say nothing but just casually show him the mess of cables… “Oh I wish there was SOME way to get these in a proper order”… and let nature take its course.
Hi...I just purchased a Drawmer MC3.1 and returned the SPL MTC MKII...hope I made a wise choice. The SPL didn't have monitor calibration so was a no go for me...I also felt it changed the sound slightly...I use an Avid Carbon and I'm hoping the sound will be transparent on this Drawmer.
One is passive the other active so you will notice a slightly different sound, probably the top end, but nothing you won't get used to.
@@mixbustv I am pretty sure both were active...the CMC2 is passive but isn't the MC3.1 active? Anyway it's a moot point. The second I got them, two of the buttons were stuck in and wouldn't pop back out. Getting returned on Monday and won't be replaced with Drawmer. Heard about this button issue and ignored it. Too bad cause I wanted to really like it.
Funny, I just did a calculation today for my insurance. I don't do mixing or mastering, but I have a creative studio with synths, drummachines and fx. Total cost is around 32k.
Please do the battle of the Vari Mus!
I’m not saying you can’t afford any and all that equipment on your own but are you in a business partnership situation able to finance all this?
If that API 512c is anything like the API 512V then it is probably one of the most important and least expensive - great for my rap vocals!
Yep, same thing just without output volume. My fav solid state pre
Awesome man! How are you liking the SPL monitor controller so far? It’s one of the few that sums inputs so I was super interested, but I haven’t seen many vids on it
It's great, incredibly transparent with it being passive
One of my favorite videos of all time! 👑 I have about 2500 usd in my Studio 😂
WOw, just woww!
Hi! Great video! Can you recommend MOTU interfaces for the studio? Are their converters good enough? Does their system work fine? Thank you!

Always felt great running my studio for free when I lived in Spain 😁🌞
I spend half of that on acoustics!!! Best investment ever!!!
indeed
Wow in building out my studio maybe I should consider an electrical engineering and audio engineering degree to save money :)
I overshot. I guessed that you were somewhere around $200k.
Just had a similar conversation with a buddy a few days ago. I figured roughly $12k. I added acoustic panels in my estimate though.
But, I'm still a baby in this world. I started learning mixing about 2 years ago. No proper mixing desk. No analog gear yet. Strictly in the box. Most expensive gear: Adam A77X's about $2,500/pair. Still a rookie. 🙂
How do you feel about mixing through a pair of mic Pres on the master bus? Using the line in, of course.
I think preamps are for microphones. We have many dedicated saturators and 2bus units today
@@mixbustv I have a summing mixer now, but I like what you say about it. Of course, mic pres are for microphones, but I've watched others recommend using a line input on a mic pre/line input on the mix bus to achieve a similar result. I have a Dangerous AD+ and Dangerous Convert 2. I've been using a Ferrofish 16 channel for the summing mixer. But I'd like to eliminate it and go directly from the dangerous DA into a dedicated two-bus chain. I picked up the HG-2 after watching your demos. I'd love to see what you would recommend for a mastering chain for a home studio or recommended two bus units. Thanks for all the great content.
I was thinking of an API or Neve line input to get that sound into, HG-2, Rupert NVE MBP, and then my MusEQ to the AD+. I hope that makes sense what I'm getting at.

What happens to the old gear in the boxes? Will it get sold off, rented out or just kept around as spares in case something goes wrong?
All of the above. Some gets rented, some goes in the other studio, some gets sold and some as a spare
Maag eq4m vs heritage symph eq PLEASE!🤘

What part of your income you save for gear ? I'am curious
To be honest I don't really set aside a specific %, if I'm in the green and I need something I buy it, if not, then I'm not making enough money to need or justify that expense. When you start out sure it's an invesment, meaning you gotta spend before you make money or make the money back, but not anymore for me. Also, as a general rule, I go a buy a rule: if you can't buy something twice, you can't afford it.
He's got more hardware than I have plugins 😂😂 there's a lot of money there! But you don't accumulate without being good at your job! Look mint
Hi Dave, does the stamchild has a M/S ?
Yes. The 670 was arguably the first original MS compressor, it's in the original design (and this is the closest there is), it's even labeled as it was Lat/Vert
Personally i'd say the most expensive piece of gear in the room is your Ears .... If you can afford all that gear then your ears always lead you and your clients on the correct musical path for the project %100 🙌
Amazing gear! and in all that super mega chain, have you ever got clicks on that super chain you've got there?
I'm not sure what you mean, click? As in digital clicks? No if you clock correctly
@@mixbustv clicks and pops like statick build up. Found the problem: mixing impedances because a lot of mics and analog gear. Also, mixed voltages on some synthys, mostly euro rack.... and USB cables (they are SUPER noisy). Problem solved.
Mogami cables.....so damn expensive, but so damn good. LoL
You ALWAYS have to go through a third-party vendor in order to cop them!
I don't have many mogami. Mostly Cordial or Klotz
If you’re going to buy a good amount of cables you can use proaudiola they’ll make mogami for you cheaper I believe.
Hey question. How do you like the HRKs ?? Will you be doing a video on them?
I haven't plugged them in yet, too many mixes to finish and I had to rearrange gear. At one point I will
@@mixbustv let me know sir. I’m also looking at obviously the knives or The Sound sculpture TS 500.
Hi Dave, what is your take on the PQ and the your latest Wes audio EQ. Thanks
They're arguably the best eq ever made in their respective category. Wes really created something special with the TubeEQ, so did SPL with the PQ. They compliment each other perfectly
Would you like to do a video on that? That would be awesome. Thanks
Great Tour but no more Drawmer 1978?
It's somewhere, the 1977 is also at the other studio.
It would be interesting to know how much does it cost to run the whole studio: I can easily assume a 1000$ electric bill on a monthly basis!
I might have over 100.000 euros only in vintage synths, I would have triple, but sadly sold a lot when I retired from the pro world in 2005. Love your channel mate, but you would look better with Reagan´s like touppe than with that Cherokee thing lol
