Same condition with my right SC joint after too much pull-ups exercise. now it has been over 1 year of rest and PT, and I still can not go back to my previous healthy should. it is really upset!
Sharing my experience: I had an anterior SC joint dislocation almost a year ago. I saw two orthopedists and consulted with another. I was given similar information to what is in this video. A CT scan showed only a small amount of displacement and I was advised not to do surgery or try to reduce it. While the injury has improved, and I think it continues to improve, I still very much get pain, feel occasional popping with certain movements, feel a tightening sensation going up to my jaw. I have done lots of diligence through PT, but am still quite a ways from normal function. While I'm still hopeful that it will continue to improve, from my personal experience, setting expectations of recovery in 6 weeks or so was not even close to realistic.
@@kashiua I did PT after the initial injury to restore strength and mobility. I'm sure that helped. Down the line I saw a manual physical therapist who focused on things ribs, neck, and general alignment to try and reduce stress and improve proper movement. It didn't hurt, but can't say that I've seen any substantial change.
While posterior dislocation is in another league in terms of seriousness, the truth is that an anterior scj dislocation is a pretty difficult injury in its own right if it doesn't resolve itself satisfactorily with rest and PT. You're not alone! Over the years they've tried lots of different techniques to surgically repair the scj when anterior dislocations don't resolve after rest & PT (i.e. reconstructing the ligaments surgically so you're back to "good as new") and found limited success, with some methods far too likely to lead to serious complications. i believe there's a couple newer techniques that are promising, but the problem is that the procedures are incredibly difficult and, as he said, always considered higher risk due to the location. It's an injury where sometimes the only sensible path for your doctor is to get you _as close_ to "good as new" as possible without making things worse:/ best wishes for continued recovery!
I got mine from sleeping on my right side now I sleep on my back going to take a couple weeks off from the gym and come back super light thanks for the video
This is useful to know. I expected the doctor to pop mine back into place when I went to hospital today but they just suggested I rest it, apply ice and do gentle exercises. I'm hypermobile and don't even know how I got the injury!
It’s the only joint on the superior body (SI on the inferior) that connects the axial skeletal & appendicular skeleton. Very important joint for postural balance! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!
I am so relieved to have found your video. I recently hurt myself and have had pain from back of my ear to my my scv. I have a lump and was worried that I would need surgery. I am in a lot pain but not excruciating. It’s been a week since I hurt it so I will be patient and do stretches for it
I have a partial anterior dislocation of my sternoclavical joint. I am an avid weight lifter. I struggle with shoulder and pec on that side and joint constinately pops in and out. Would love to see any videos on how to possibly strengthen surrounding muscles to deal with this. (I have been seen by a dr)
Look up teres....I had to start with no weight and worked up to water bottle. This has made a huge difference...I wasn't using it.... compensating with other muscles. Other is forearm on wall right angle, lean in while extending the same leg. Chest and arms open up. Hope helpful
I was ran over by a bike as a child, running over my back. I believe this is what caused my protruding collarbone. I never saw a doctor since it didn’t seem to cause me pain during that time and I’m glad to hear there wasn’t really much they could’ve done. 40 years later I have foot, knee, hip pains on the same side of the dislocated collarbone. I believe it caused a slight misalignment in my body that over time cause joint pains

Are you looking for people to study? I am a healthy 56 yrs old and goal in life to get my body untwisted from severe impact by a drunk driver. I have use magnesium, diet, exercise and meditation to heal. My ribs were twisted. I have had acupuncture, massage and manipulation which all helped with the sternum release. Now it is moving! The sternum was so far down. I purchased a rib brace in January with breast cut outs and it literally is a life saver as I can be more active. The left shoulder that received most impact from seatbelt is moving up. The first shift caused huge hives for weeks. Think nerves were very irritated as it healed. Hives pop up when impinged and travel down. I know that I have undiagnosed sternum dislocation. However twisted. Ribs were pushed down from left and blow out back on the right. I am working my teres to help. I told the doctors that my neck is longer I feel like a turtle and my neck is stuck in. Well it was but it was the sternum. I am a person of service and want to share what can help others.

This gonna sound weird, i honestly dont know what caused it, but i have tenderness and a little pain at the sternoclavicular joint on my left side, and pain along the clavicle towards the acromioclavicular joint anytime my shoulder is raised like on a shrug, or if i bring my arm back. I noticed it after doing back exercises in the gym, all i did that day was barbell shrugs, then bent over barbell rows, some pull ups, then underhand pulldowns on a machine, and i think that was it. They were routine exercises i had done frequently, only thing different was starting the workout with those barbell shrugs. It was heavy but i was able to do them with good form and hold at the top, it's the only thing i can think of that might have caused this. I had no pain or discomfort during my entire workout, it was only later in the day when i was getting ready to sleep and then waking up, i had noticeable pain and discomfort. Even tho it bothered me, i still went to the gym the subsequent days, and while not confident, i was still able to perform heavy barbell bench press, incline bench press, but i opted not to do overhead barbell press because i didn't feel i like i could get the same power on the lift. I went the next day to do legs, and during squats as im holding the bar on my upper traps, i felt some initial discomfort with my chest stretched and my arm back, but it didn't bother me and i was able to secure the bar and brace like normal, and push the same weights. Sorry for the long rant, but basically after a week, i dont really feel any better. My job is physical and includes some lifting, but this doesn't impede my ability to work. I dont have any pain in my shoulder, it's primarily along the collarbone. I guess if it doesn't get better after another week, i'll go see someone. Im usually pretty good with healing minor injuries but this is the first time i haven't had any progress over time in getting better. I'm 43.
I have a very similar experience. My ortho told me not a complete dislocation but a sprain and I need to rest for 4-6 weeks and try to immobilize the joint as much as possible. I am allowed walking and lower body isolation exercises. He has prescribed NSAIDs and antacids and also asked me to keep a heat pad there couple of times a day. What has your treatment experience been?
@@harisubramanian3793 I tried using ice on it but didn't seem to matter much. I took advil or aleve for like a week just in the morning to get me through my work days cause my job is physical. I pretty much gambled on it just being a sprain or strain, and not a dislocation, just based on muscle testing. I ended up still going to the gym as usual and had no issues with recruiting max power on any movement, i just had a lot of pain at the collarbone when stretching out my thoracic, like on a highbar squat or overhead barebell press. After about 2 weeks it felt alright, and now just over a month later and it doesn't bother me at all, but if i roll my shoulders back, i can still feel a bit tenderness right at the sternoclavicular. I did no real therapy type exercises. I simply stuck to my lifting routine and just did my best to stretch out so it wouldn't bother me. I chose not to rest at all, im always an advocate of healthy movement to help the body heal itself. I really dont know what caused the issue in the first place. But the movements that possibly contributed to it i haven't done again. Basically heavy front barbell shrugs. Sorry for the long write up.
