    When I stopped buying alcohol every week we saved soooo much money. I was a bad alcoholic just 3 months ago but have been sober since and have probably saved around $600+ at this point.

    I adore the idea of minimalism, and I'm really trying to embrace it, little by little. But there is one thing I will always buy: books. I love them truly. The smell, the texture... I go to the library too, but it is never the same for me. I re-read them all the time and I mark the pages for later. I just love them. I think I will always allow myself that little thing because I keep loving books and finding them full of purpose.

      I’m the same way. I embrace the minimalist lifestyle but I always keep my books and am always buying more. I would buy used books to save money and to extend their life. I feel no guilt about it because this lifestyle is about making it mine. Books gives me knowledge, wisdom, and colors to the boring everyday life.

    I think a cool minimalism video idea would be to talk about the good and bad purchases you’ve made as a minimalist! Like you always say, it’s a journey. And even when you’ve made a lot of progress as a minimalism, we’re still humans, and sometimes we make a decision that we think will work out, but doesn’t. I know I still make “bad” purchases as a minimalist! But I do learn from them. Like realizing that gold jewelry catches my eye, but I just don’t wear it. I prefer to actually wear silver.

      Alesia Delgado I had heaps of stuff as a kid but at the age of 11, something switched in my mind and I gave up all my old toys and most of my stuff, including clothes and furniture and my room ended up with very few things, like a minimalist room(I had no idea what that was at the time) because I realised most of the stuff meant nothing to me. I learned this from the UA-cam channel The Financial Diet, but something that's really helping me to stop spending on unnecessary things is to write a wish list. Every time I think "Oh, I want that/could use that right now" I'll write it down, and if I've written down the same thing 5 times in a year, I allow myself to buy it. This really helps me to realise what I do and don't actually need! My achilles heel is dog stuff though, I still buy my dog way too many things XD

    Ironically, becoming a “minimalist” in 2016 made me become MORE materialistic, but in a good way!! For me it’s not so much what I stopped buying but what I started buying. When you consciously limit your number of possessions, each and every item counts. You start to care way more about things like quality and longevity. This led me to invest in top quality basics (read high quality denim, sturdy outerwear and well made footwear). These things are VERY expensive and I found that once I’d invested in them, I was too skint to splurge on anything else 😂😂😂.

  • @Billythachikk

    I've thought about doing a "no buy" for the rest of the year, except Christmas gifts and whatnot. So, print out a blank calender with days, and color in all the days on which I didn't buy anything unnecessary with green, and then if buying anything that isn't budget related like food, toilet paper, whatnot, color it in with red. And writing on it what I bought then. I think, instead of saying that you "limit" yourself, if you make it a challenge, it's mentally more appealing. So it's like "yes, I managed not to buy anything" instead of "shuck, I'm not supposed to buy anything".

      I have a budget of needs and things to save for, and keep track of my receipts for either each month or even each week. I know approximately how much I'm spending with each store, so if I go over, I go less somewhere else if I can. And practice the 'one thing comes in, one thing like it goes out'...I need to get back to doing that, because my house looked great at that point.

    As a guy who's used double edged safety razors ever since I first started shaving, let me tell you - they are *AMAZING*
    They are super safe (hence the name) and retain sharpness for a long time. I recommend Feather blades from Japan. From my experience they are the sharpest and therefore safest to use (no tugging) Feathers come packaged in a little bit of plastic, but the great thing about them is that the packaging also serves as a blade bank to safely dispose of used blades. You simply retrieve a new blade from the top and slide the old blade in the bottom. Super convenient.

    I have been using washable cotton pads for years. I love it! I also use toilet paper for extra stuffing on heavy flow days. When I habe my first kid in December, I plan to do a combo of Elimination communication and fabric diapers.
    I just bought a bunch of stuff online (blueland) for reusable and compostable cleanimg products. Even the repacement packages come in compostable packaging.
    I have a small potted veggie garden and plan to use half my back yeard next year for gardening, I have a small compost bin already starting for use next spring.
    I'm not always great with this, but about 10 months ago I started portioning food baggies of 100 calories each so I can better regulate and control my diet by eatting frequently. I lost more weight than I intended to and saved a lot of money but can up my intake in a controled way to be right where i want to be. And know that I'm still getting plenty of different nutrients and shopping for more nutrient dense foods.

    Before buying new things I ask around my friends, co-workes and family. You will be surprised how much stuff people hoard in their basements. This way I got a toaster, a bed and a brand new Jack Wolfskin wintercoat for 50 € last month. Most people are glad to get rid of this stuff before selling it to strangers. I always wonder why they buy high end electronics and kitchen gear only to put it aside...

    If you want softer fabric don’t use a softener. Instead, use 1/4 -1/3 of the (environmentally friendly!) washing powder/ liquid it says on the box and 1/4 cup of sodium bicarbonate. Or no powder but 1/2 cup bicarb and 1-2 tsp of eucalyptus oil. In the compartment of your machine you’d normally put the softener, use about 1/2 cup of white vinegar (or fill to the max line, don’t exceed it!). Hang to dry, preferably in the sun as it’s antibacterial and helps to remove stains. If you can’t, hang dry wherever possible. The vinegar helps to remove all the washing powder from the fabric and that’s how it softens, rather than masking it over 👍🏻
    I say eucalyptus oil as it’s a disinfectant. SOO good on towels and sheets! And the smell 😌

    • @anda_ansheen
      @anda_ansheen 6 років тому

      Just be careful about drying your colored clothes in the sun, as it can really "burn" the color away from the fabrics.

      I worked with a tailor that has worked for Harry Rosen and other big names in men's suits, plus she ran her own tailoring business for many years. She is retired but always dressed to impress, many outfits were classy and vintage, but they looked brand new. Her trick for softening and preserving fabrics is using white vinegar instead of fabric softener. I switched too in 2015, and I have never gone back. Also, your clothes does not smell like vinegar. I use a 1/3 for a large load. Apparently this is common knowledge with the older folks because when I told my grandmother, she was like 'duh, you didn't know that?'

    About the Dental Hygiene products: nothing replaces flossong, a water pik is used in ADDITION to flossing, not in place of. The water pik will never get underneath the gums, just shoots in between. And just a tidbit, you're brushing incorrectly with your power brush. Keep it still and only the bristles are moving, not your hand. It's not a manual brush. Rethink buying floss!! Unless, you want peridontal disease that is.

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  6 років тому +26

      @Arakaneï tooth decay and gingivitis are two separate issues. Typically someone has one or the other, some unfortunately have both. You can have ZERO decay and have periodontal disease. Two completely different bacterial species.

    • @nikolalagova605
      @nikolalagova605 6 років тому +14

      Arakaneï Brushing your teeth is not enough. Flossing is very important to prevent gingivitis, because it takes away the bacteria, that's been siting in your interdental space and no other toothbrush than interdental toothbrushes can reach there.

    • @nikolalagova605
      @nikolalagova605 6 років тому +8

      Arakaneï Talk to your dentist, that's the best advice I can give you. :) Mine told me, that everyone thinks their teeth are too close together, but eventually, dentists will help you find the interdental toothbrush in the size that will fit you perfectly. Trust me, I've been there. :)

    My rule is that if I use it a lot, it’s not a waste. I mean, I have a lot of beauty products, but I use them all regularly. I have lots of kitchen equipment, but I use it all a lot. The hard part is figuring out ahead of time whether you will use an item regularly! That takes practice, but I’m getting much better at it.

    I was going thru my CD/DVD collection (no, I will NOT be giving them up: don't care to be so dependent on technology to get at things that I love) and found that I had two copies of a few of them. An important part of minimalism is organizing what you do choose to keep so that you don't duplicate purchases. (Currently TRYING to go more minimalist in my lifestyle.) The thing is, I only paid 90 cents for each one because I got them from thrift stores.
    The ultimate of recycling: thrift stores. I have found extremely nice things there (it's like a treasure hunt) and if I chose to lose them later, it is not painful because I know I didn't pay that much for them. I also helped keep it out of the land fills.
    Just a big tip for minimalists: when you chose to do this, do not discard/curb side your items when purging! Donate them directly to a charity thrift store. Please keep your "stuff" out of the land fills.

    A great video! I'm working on repairing clothes or other items instead of throwing them away. Honestly I would not recommend getting rid of shaving cream!!! I did a few years back and i re-introduced in my skincare routine recently. Having a really sensitive and thin skin, i got scratches and burns without it. No post moisturizer could make up for that. And yes, I tried oil or soap! If you want to save money there is a simple trick: buy men's sharing cream. It is more efficient and WAY less expensive, plus the sensitive skin option is really taken into account.

My mother in law told my husband that I remind her of the poor people from a village in her homeland because I only had one handbag and when told that I needed more because "it's embarrassing" I said that I don't need them 😂. Maddie my tip would be don't buy electrical products that just do one thing (airfryer, deepfryer, rice cooker, instapot etc) Especially if you can already use what you have (oven, saucepans, frypan, stove top) Its so easy to think you "need" that gadget to cook great meals, when in fact you don't! An oven & a baking tray lined with a splat mat will do the job of an airfryer. A saucepan on the stove cooks rice as good as a rice cooker. Its far cheaper, takes up less space & is better for the environment. You get my drift 😁 Fantastic vlog btw....much love from Australia 😘

    Actually Black Friday is a great opportunity for minimalists as well. The thing is you try to wait until this moment to buy all of the things you really need. I'm not talking about buying everything you like. Like clothes and shoes and oils and so on, obviously only the ones you really really need. An example? My boots are pretty old and damaged, still I can use them for a month I think, but during black Friday week I bought a new pair for 50 euros! That's a good price (their Normal price is 90 ). In a few weeks I'll have to throw the old pair away and will start using the new ones without paying them 90 euros (their current price). I have a classic stile so I can do this every time I need something.

I follow with a face wash (Paula's Choice Calm cleanser for dry skin) since coconut oil is comedogenic. Totally agree! I never flossed and I trip to the dentist changed that. he found a lot of cavities because I didnt floss for a long time. brushing alone cannot clean your teeth!

    Such a great list - lots of ideas to help cut down, especially cleaning products, which is a big problem for me. Luckily I recently found an environmentally friendly surface cleaner and once all the other detergents finish I'm not going to replace them. Soap is also something I recently started using again - so much cheaper as well. No plastic shopping bags, less take-out coffee. But I do love take out which is a bad habit :( Thanks for this again!

    What’s funny is, simply from being more broke then anything most of the time, a lot of those things I’ve stopped doing.
    1. Makeup: honestly, I’m no good at it lol
    2. Magazines: I don’t think I’ve read more then Game Informer, a few times, and I don’t have a subscription.
    3. Mouthwash: I have had it, but I think I’ll make my own, I haven’t had any for a long time.
    4. Fabric softener: you’re right, and anyway, vinegar works just fine
    5. Hair products: I don’t know what I’m doing in the Beaty dept so....I just dry my hair and go.
    There are more things from your list (not buy expensive meat: relatable) I won’t go through the list, but I’d say I’m half way there, and I love the points and options you talk about for everything!
    Very helpful!
