I decluttered my wardrobe today, discovered I only have five or six pieces I fit into and wear over and over. So I gave all my old clothes to charity and bought a 20 piece wardrobe second hand that all fits and goes together.
It was a great start!
The biggest thing that helped me declutter is realising that 'maybes' are always actually nos. If you dont specifically really want to keep it, it doesnt need to be in your life

The Minimalists usefully say "Can you get the same item again within 20 minutes and for under 20 dollars should you need it? If so, you can let it go with an easy mind". It helps me. G

I'm donating extra stuff to a woman's shelter. It helps me to imagine a woman with nothing asking for an item I'm deciding to get rid of. Makes letting go of things easy.
I tell my friends and family NOT to buy me stuff for Christmas... birthday. I say I would really love to go out with them and be treated to a movie ... coffee or a meal. My loved ones are slowly warming to these ideas. Greetings from Australia x

I know she said donate buuuuut I made 500$ extra one week just from declutering so u could like do two steps in one. Sell it, then put the money straight in a bank for a trip to somewhere u never been.

Not only did we become more minimalists years ago when we became plant based, but we then became tiny house minded, lost weight, reduced stress.
Going to bed at the same time, getting enough sleep as well as drinking more water, and getting rid of the television seven years also has also helped greatly.
I declutter and tidy when I'm stressed. It may not be a hack, but when I'm stressed it makes me feel better to organize and declutter an area of my house, even if I have already been through it before. My grandmother just passed away and the few days after she passed I organized and decluttered areas of my house. It's a good distraction from stress.
I also always keep a charity shop box. I've already been through kon Mari a couple years ago and decluttered all areas in my house, but I still occasionally find things that I can get rid of. So I always have the box in the garage for things I decide I don't need anymore. I let my sisters and friends go through it first before I bring the rest to charity.

Autumn Rose, I liked reading your post. I think cleaning helps with stress also, because it is something we can control and it gives us an accomplishment. The next day we look at our clean closet, drawer, bookshelf, etc.and we can take pride in it. Not everybody gets that! We do. 😊THANKS FOR YOUR POST.
All good tips, here is another tip I’ve heard:
products that were a bit more expensive, /rare to aquire; use them up and don’t wait for that special occasion and Then realise these have expired.
So true! I saved some test products for the longest of times I got from my favourite hair salon and wouldn’t afford to re-buy any time soon. I had tried them a few times then saved them for ”someday” special.
Hearing this advice I wanted to use them, realising that some of them had begun to dry out etc and had really been wasted when they could have been Used.
Plus, using more ”special” products on an average day makes those days extra special, more enjoyed than letting things collect dust etc for that ”someday”.
Yes! Because its not just the stuff that gets old... We do too! Use it now! Live today! Drink out of your favourite china cups! Use up your perfume.. They do go off eventually... Wear your nice clothes. Today IS the special occasion!
I got rid of 3/4 of my wardrobe and I’ve never felt lighter. Minimalism to me isn’t about having less, it’s about the simplicity of life and enjoying the joy of just being.

My minimalism hack is to declutter my contact list from my phone! People who changed its cellphone and I have multiple contacts, people that I haven't talk in the past year etc

And do the same to your Social media accounts. I got rid of all people that I haven't spoken to in years! Most of these people just sent an request because they "know" me from school or work years ago. They're not interested in my life nor am I interested in their lifes. Very often I got notifications about their activities in my news feed and I would think "I don't care if XY was in Spain" or "I never agree with his opinion on things" and even "Why does he post stuff like this, what a jerk!" . So I kicked them off all together and most people didn't even realized it because they had 500 "friends" and if one goes missing they never know which one. But I feel so much better now!
I startet my minimalism journey about a year ago and I feel so much lighter. I do believe it helps me with my anxiety too. Also, I am slowly transitioning into being vegetarian.

It is a continuous process. As a senior citizen, i am always on the minimalism path.

How much ever we accumulate, the hardcore reality is, we use only ONE at a time. So it would make someone who is in need happy if we donate the excess stuff that we accumulated. That's what I feel and end up decluttering. Thanks for the useful tips 😊 love from India.
I just started my journey 1 year and a half ago. I own so much clothes and shoes and makeup bcus I worked retail and had huge discounts. I was thinking i would be preparing for the dark times of not been able to buy anything. I clutter sooo muchhh! I was miserable everytime i entered my room! I felt like i was missing air in my own room. So i decided i needed to change bcus i felt overwhelmed with so much things around me. I got rid of half of my stuff! I gave them as gifts and some were donated. I wish i would get rid of more but I have this mentality of the poor girl that was the only one dress badly within her friends and classmates. Been poor makes you think the more the better for reserve. So it’s really hard for me to get rid of all the new things i haven’t wear. I just decided as the things wear off and finish I will get rid of them. I’m going on my own pace. It has take me almost 2 years to get rid of everything I have had an excess of. But I’m so happy with how having less had made me feel. I’m changing little by little! I can’t throw everything out cus that’s not how I’m build to think.
I relate to your story. I do a lot of collecting and building collections till I feel sick. I recently had to pack everything for a move and my personal stuff is a lot. I'm sure it's excessive. My dream is to live in a place large enough to have spaces for all my collections and preparations for future activities such as crafts, sewing, etc. I am a huge foodie and have every gadget, pot and pan known to mankind. At the moment my stuff is in storage so I am now living as a minimalist. I am excited to see how things happen this year for me. I really like the idea of reducing things that never get used and that's where I'm going next with this obsession.
You saved me buying bath towels that was in the sale today, as I had your inspiration tips running through my head. I love how much easier it is to clean and tidy now, compare to this time last year. I started clearing out stuff when you started last year. Trying to get the other numbers of the family involved was not so easy. I only buy what I need now. I always check several times with my self do I need this or do I already have sometime I can use instead before I buy. If has been life changing to be free from buying and enjoying what i already have. Time saved from not shopping and constantly tidying is more time for me to be walking in the woods, going to the beach or walking around Eden project.
My minimalist hack is to declutter my personal stuffs like wallet and purses every week. This way I normally get rid of unnecessary things such as old credit card bills, documents or usual 'trash' that gets stuck in my purse or wallet. Another hack that I usually do from time to time is decluttering my contact list from my phone. I don't know why it gives me such joy but it really is! It feels so good to let go/delete contacts from people you are not close/not in touch with anymore!

The yes, no and maybe pile is great! But since I am a bit "out of sight, out of mind" everything that's on my maybe pile, I put it back in the closet together with my yes pile to check if I really end up using it. If at the end of the season I realize I didn't use that item or I didn't feel very comfortable wearing it, out it goes.

I've watched a lot of minimalism videos on youtube, but this is by far the most helpful and sensible!
I started minimalism and it makes my life simpler and more comfortable. Decluttering things from the past feels like heaven. Im also evaluating my relationship with others if its still good to stay or not.

for me what works is a end of the season decluttering and also switching from books to ebooks 3 years ago saved so much space...
also “no buying” is doable and i have started this since 2 months and i do tht by setting aside a particular sum of money each month and keeping in my wallet and paying from it for those little extra or eating out etc., this way i don’t overindulge...
also i stopped buying so many body creams and lotions and instead replaced it with coconut oil.. this is partly because i got really smell sensitive in my current second pregnancy but also i was simply overwhelmed by the choices

Over the years of living with Borderline Personality Disorder, I noticed, that if my surroundings are as much of a mess as my mind is, I will never be able to calm down at all. I realized, that minimalism is the way for me personally as a skill and to learn a different kind of more positive mindset... Which is something I dearly need with a disorder like this. Positivity and peace usually has no place in my life or my vision but I started decluttering due to a family member moving back in with us and I had to give up two rooms for them for a while. I had to cut down massively. And since I'm currently also sharing one room with my boyfriend, we don't have much space in the first place. And I feel so much lighter and happier already. I'll continue this. I can only benefit from this way of life.

Good day Madeline. I have a ? Thanks to your many videos, I have become very inspired to declutter, minimalize and also try a NoBuy year. Although I do often have bouts of reducing my clothes, I realized I rebuild with that in the moment splurge. Never wearing the many new items I’ve now waisted money on. Through this last purge of my wardrobe I truly realized all the money blown on impulse buys. All my necessity buys are continually worn till thread bare but impulse buys stay on the shelf like prized treasure. Shame really. My next venture in the next 2 days is decluttering my kitchen. We were a house of 7 and now we are just part of a couple. We have so much stuff it is unholy. My mum is a neat/tidy hoarder. No filth. Just surplus of depression and impulse buying. I have inherited this trait to some degree. Each holiday (birthday, Mother’s Day, Christmas) my mum buys a huge bin sized bag of clothing and sometimes shoes and large latest cooking devices. NONE of which I ever use. Hardly ever. She refuses year after year after year to stop this tree and I am beyond sick of it. I understand and appreciate her thought but it actually brings me misery every time I see her approaching me with these unwanted and always unreturnable cause she either makes sure or loses the receipts. I am truly truly fed up as each nov to dec I have my winter declutter time and come Christmas here comes that bloody bag of stuff I detest and do not want. What can I do in this situation?
My favorite in maintaining my declutter Ed life is the "one in one out" witch I follow quite strictly. It really helps me prevent buil dup and makes me carefully consider any time I am looking to get something new. It becomes natural with the rule to only buy something g when something you already have is so broken or worn that you are forced to replace it.

Hi Madeleine I have appreciated your honest videos especially when I was decluttering before a house move. I have found minimalism to be a process of working down through layers over time, especially after the initial reductions pre house move. I say frequently aloud " I want less stuff around me!" or " How many recipes are actually quick and easy in this book?". I will photocopy the few pages and let the book off to charity (shops shut with covid, so delayed but it's in the 'out' box!). Re meals... I rotate the same 10 or so main meal proteins with veg and sweet spuds, 3 breakfasts and 4 lunches. Makes shopping and meals easy and streamlined, and keeps fridge tidy. Just decided to officially start this journey (been unofficially decluttering for a while, just a few things at a time) because my roommate invited me on a trip to Thailand with her for graduation and since it's still almost 2 years away I though now is the time to start decluttering, selling what I can, doing little things for extra money (like collecting bottles and cans to recycle, just during school while I'm not actually working) and especially fixing my buying habits. It has taken me a long time to realize how my buying needs to change and how easy it is to change some things. Like, I'm on a meal plan so I should not go to the grocery store unless I really need something (no more frozen food) and I have way too many clothes and makeup so stop buying clothes and makeup and start getting rid. I don't have everything with me up at school and I've already gotten rid of a bunch of clothing and makeup up here. I figure, if I brought it up here with me, I probably like it, and if I left it home, I most likely don't need it. So I'm sure I'll have a field day when I get home. Me and my roommate started a list of things we can do during school to start saving up for the trip (sell baked goods and little drawings and paintings for cheap). I would much rather go across the world with my friend than buy a lipstick I'll never wear. This is the one thing that pushed me over the edge and made me realize that what I'm doing isn't sustainable.

I personally do have loads of "spare" things. However, I do tend to find a use for those things. Maybe because my boyfriend and I fix anything we can and always try to learn to fix things we don't know how to fix yet. This saves a lot of money as well and as long as you keep those things in logical places and not clutter drawers, they are not bothering at all. Duplicates for certain things are very usefull. I have often had something break and not had a quick opportunity or enough money to fix it, so having a duplicate that you can fall back on is very pleasant. However, too many duplicates are indeed just clutter
I also emptied out all the drawers and cupboard in my kitchen and living room. I have adhd so every single space is stuffed with stuff and nothing has a place. Most drawers are now empty because I was accumulating leaflets and letters and random packaging and junk. It feels so good to know it’s all clear and clean.
I want to start a minimalism journey, but it has been difficult because I don't live by my self or with people who wants to join me on this. But at least I am doing some changes on my mindset thanks to your videos! Regards from Argentina!

i live in a shared flat (4 people) and it worked out fine for me! i declutter my space to lead with example. then i declutter shared stuff, e.g. old jars, multiple knifes, baking stuff. i get everything out of the cupboard. then i put up two boxes. i label them „discard“ and „keep“. i choose the items i like and put them into the „keep“ box. i notify my flat mates to go through the items. it takes them 1 min max. everything that is not to keep, i donate, sell or throw away. if i can sell something i put it in our shared flat fund :)
I find minimalism happens either intentionally or unintentionally. Life imposes its limits on us. At first it felt bad but as I watch these training videos I am more committed to being intentional. The benefits are enormous.
Recently I tried to help a hoarder for two years with no success. The hoard takes over eventually kills the person.
One rule: I intentionally look for items that will do the work of two or three items, as long as that item is 70% as effective - usually something that does the job of several things isn't quite as good, but worth the compromise if it's minimal. Also, I'm always on the lookout for any apps for my phone or watch that can replace physical items like guitar tuners etc.
I started with my bathroom first because it was a smaller area and I didn't feel as overwhelmed. After my bathroom I felt comfortable enough to tackle my clothing. I started with my tanks (the articles that were easiest for me to let go) and I did the yes, no, maybe piles. My trick was to toss the no pile without thinking about it and later went back to fold them. I kept in mind that I would donate them and tried imagining someone else wearing it and it made it easier to let go. I literally only put back one article of clothing out of my entire No pile. Also folding the No-pile for me was like Komari-ish, I was able to respect the article and actually give a peace with giving it away. I felt so much lighter the next day.

Thank for this! The box it up idea is great because I have a few things that I'm not ready to get rid of but I don't think I need them, so I will box them up for now and if I don't miss them I will get rid of them :)
I also stopped shopping as soon as I discovered minimalism. And when i do need new things I try to find them at thrift stores first in order to be more sustainable

I make sure I have everything visible and easy access so that way I know what I have and also make sure I use things up before I decided to buy more. I do my best not to eat out and just cook meals to save money. I basically do everything you said in this video. Except the positive journal. As someone who has always hated washing up, one tip that I found really helpful is to keep your washing sponges clean and dry. When I'm done doing the dishes I wash the sponge, squeeze as much water as I can out, and then keep it separate (but close to) the sink. It so much easier to wash the dishes when I know I have clean and dry washing utensils. This tip is from 'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying' by Marie Kondo which has many more great tidy and decluttering tips.

I find it store in a clear box that is the right size for the item/task needed 1) will see what have so don’t over buy, 2) if gets too full know have too much

I always have a bag on the back of my door to throw things in for the charity shop when I impulsively decide I don't need it :) The secret is to NEVER look back through the bag though!! Haha.

I like to keep summer only clothing , shoes and hats, etc. in a separate closet away from all year clothing and shoes. In this way, I can see that my tendency to have too many summer only clothes is not too many for our shorter summer season in the Midwest, USA.

Thanks for the tips. I need to put more things in writing. Know I want to declutter and am but need to clarify why, think it would also help others in the house to fall in line. Have a morning routine, but need to write out an afternoon one and an evening one as things seem to fall apart then and nothing important gets done. Have started the one in one out for clothing. Not really a shopper in that area and don't need a lot of variety but sweatshirts, t's, socks can quickly breed in my closet:( TFS
