    I think it is strange that minimalists and zero-wasters talk so little about libraries. I think the concept is super and really fits both the lifestyles.

      I don't know how it is in other countries but I find libraries as something natural in almost all towns in Czech rep. We used to go there with elementary school and ever since whenever I wanted some book I would just go there. I probalby wouldn't mention it either since it is so natural to me. On the other hand to buy a book is something I do very rarely I only do it with books which I really love and I know I can read them over and over again :)
      Also I love the smell of used older books.

      I always find it strange how they say going paperless is so much better because than you have to charge your reading devices regularly which is bad for the environment in a different way. Library's or second hand are my go to options!

    Great video! Its funny, i am 40 years old and a lot of these tips are actually quite old: my grandmother and parents did a lot of the things you advise to save money (switching of lights, cooking yourself and eating local/seasonal food, thrifting, showering less, drying your clothes in the wind, walking of cycling to work, not eating a lot of meat etc etc). I am happy that all this is “in fashion” again!

      I was talking to my nana about this stuff a while back (I'm 31 and have been doing all these things for over a decade anyway) but one thing I was surprised to learn was people used to get pots and pans fixed after years of wear and tear, she said there was someone local who used to fix them. Googling it all I can see is how to re-apply non-stick to pans and nothing about fixing actual damaged pans. Must be too much hassle for even most of the eco-friendly community. I'll have to ask her next time I see her because I'm curious how they did it now.

    Where I live (Quebec, Canada), we have only one electricity supplier and it's hydroelectrical so the whole province is powered using the force of water, which is think is super cool! Also, the best decision I made this year was to start biking to work. It significantly reduced my stress levels as I don't have to deal with public transit and crowds anymore, I just get on my bike, enjoy the fresh air and get to work fully energized and in such a good mood!

    A different tip for the shower one, for those who take long showers, you can stop the water after getting wet, you can wash your body and your hair without wasting the extra water, then turn the water back on to rinse everything off. I do this all the time, and my water bill has gone down since I've started doing this.

    • @byz88

      That's a good one. A common tip it reminds me of is the turning the tap off when brushing your teeth, I've been doing it since I was kid but a surprising amount of people just don't do it.

    Buying secondhand books as well. I don’t think you mentioned it, but if you need a hard copy of a book, try to find it secondhand, it’ll likely be cheaper and that book has already been bought so it’s better to keep it being used than to buy another one. And if you don’t need a hard copy, a digital copy on your phone.

    I think learning to sew is such an important skill! It takes 5 minutes to sew a button back onto a shirt, and cotton/needles will last for ages! in my opinion plastic bags in shops should cost more.people don't care about 10p and they still buy those, if the price would be £1 or so people will think twice before they take it, or will remember to take some from home. Also I bought water destiller- brilliant idea, you will be surprised whats left on the bottom- stinky mud...do not drink water straight from tap.

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  6 років тому +15

      Yes I agree they should make them pricier and outlaw the standard plastic bags in shops and instead only sell bags for life that are more expensive! And tap water isn’t all that bad - I drink it! But would like a distiller 😊

    I have very dry skin. I only shower 2-3 times a week as per doctors advice and no, I don‘t stink. I just wash the areas of my body like my armpits, between my boobs or my female parts daily. You wont really start stinking at your elbows 😂
    Oh and as for light bulbs - buy LED. Those „oldschool“ energysaving bulbs are full with nasty chemicals that are bad for the environment.

      I've honestly never showered more than 2-3 times a week, and I don't get smelly (if you find your underarms are a problem I find that shaving my pits keeps my bo down)
      Another thing thats kinda odd that I do, I don't use soap. I never really have, and I don't plan on starting. Water, shampoo, and conditioner is all I ever use (and yes that includes the downstairs)

  • @Veronensis
    @Veronensis 6 років тому +48

    To elaborate on the not showering tip: Not showering does not mean not washing!! I always hear people say that if you don't shower, you're gross. Especially in hotter climates. But a shower is not the only way to get clean. Start using a washcloth! I probably shower every other day, but I wash myself every day! On the day's I'm not showering, I just grab a washcloth, and wash myself at the sink. Just wet yourself really quickly, put a drop of soap on your washcloth and scrub the places that get dirty (armpits...) rinse the washcloth and whipe all the soap off again. It only takes about a minute, so it saves you time in the morning, and it saves you a lot of water.

    • @foragingvegan2654
      @foragingvegan2654 5 років тому +3

      I second this, I usually only shower when I want to wash my hair. Otherwise I just wash myself with a washcloth. It's quicker, more sustainable and I also user colder water since I don't need to cover my whole body with water

    Great video! A few thought from me:
    Drying your clothes outside on a line makes it also smell so much better.
    Many libraries (at least here in Germany) also provide borrowing ebooks. That might not be "more green" than buying ebooks, but it saves you money. But oh, yes, it might be greener if you would usually take your car to go to the library.

    If you’re like me and really prefer multiple showers a week, pop on a shower head that reduces water output. Ours cuts the amount of water coming out of our shower in half. Doing this and limiting our showers to about 3 minutes means we’re saving a lot of water.

    For the people who get their periods - use a menstrual cup. They are from £10-£20 and they can last you yearssss. You just wash them. The amount of money spent on pads and tampons through a year is insane and let alone the amounts of plastic packaging they have. Switching for a menstrual cup is like the best thing. Also using bamboo toothbrushes is like hella better than plastic ones and of course using metal straws as well instead of the plastic ones. I normally carry around a cup glass jar of like a normal size and when I go places I ask them to put the drink I want to buy in there instead of in a plastic cup and like 99% of the time they say yes. Just make sure you don't take like a huge cup or jar because if not they will say no. Take a slightly smaller one than the size of of their ones and they will be fine with it ! Hope that helpeddd

      Same here in India. Cannot go without two showers a day. Even when the weather is cool, we still stink because of the humidity. But then we often use a bucket and mug for bathing n not an actual shower. Three average sized mugs for wetting ourselves and three to wash the soap off. That’s not a lot especially when compared to a 15 min shower.

    Great tips! I also save money through : having a hand driven washing machine, a desert refrigerator (no electricity), and no TV (you can watch pretty much anything on a computer). Also don't forget that going paper free is good, but you need to be careful about your internet data. Storing tons of emails or data consumes lots of energy in data centers.
    I am starting a freelance web developer career and plan to work with green data centers only (for instance located in cold countries where they don't need to cool servers so much -or not at all-). The internet is not a wireless magical thing, there are lots of physical machines and wires that make it work. We need to remember that!

    I wish they would change for plastic bags in the US! My parents waste so many plastic bags when they grocery shop. And I wish it was easier to recycle in general in the US. In some places, they have recycling pickup but not where I live. My local recycling center doesn't take everything, even if it's technically recyclable, so it makes it difficult for me to recycle.

    One I would add to the list is to check your loft to see if there is insulation in there. If there isn't, get some installed, which in the UK can be done for free in some cases via certain government schemes. The same goes for cavity wall insulation but that is harder to check so get a survey done for that at the same time. This can save some pennies on the heating cost of a house and also use less gas / electricity / wood / coal. One other would be to check your windows and doors seal properly when shut and the frames don't have any holes / gaps in the sealant around the frame that can let drafts in.

    wait what??????????????????
    here in brazil most people take 2 showers a day, i feel gross even skiping a day, imagine making that a habit. so gross, just dont take long showers everyday and you'll be go to go. if you are worried about your natural oils, just use soap in your armit, butt and vag and you're done.

    Making every thing online isnt always as green as it seems. Serverfarms suck a lot of enery up. And most of the times the end-user cant figure out where the energie came from. There are some label, to show that your Website is powered by green energy but most Websites and Services are hosted from "normal" Energysources mainly coal or nuclear, depending where the Servers are located. Plus, most electronics are at least partly produced under shady conditions (emplee-treantment and sourcing raw materials)….. I am not suggesting to go off the Internet and life in a cave, but i think its important to ask questions and keep looking :) but I figure thats the reasoning behind going green in the first place ^^

    So good that you encourage people to cook their own foods. Not only is it healthier but it is so morale boosting in a world where knowing how to cook is such a lost art. I love yogurt and cheese products. But all of them are sold in plastic. I’ve begun to make my own yogurt lately and I love it. It’s a lot cheaper and it doesn’t take much time or effort to make. I make it in my crock pot. It’s so fantastic. And no plastic is used in making or storing it since I store it in old jars from other things I’ve purchased in the past. And I don’t feel bad about giving away small jars of my yogurt to friends in those old jars that I use as Tupperware more or less. And the great thing about cooking my own food is that people really love my cooking even though I’m not a gourmet because they are so used to eating prepackaged that anything fresh made tastes wonderful. So another morale booster.

      Don’t get frustrated by it, everyone is different and takes their own time with things. I would suggest watching a documentary with them. Or at least having a conversation about these things with them. Maybe even sending them an article or two. Or even show them this video! Or you could just be independent and do the things that you can do as an individual, eg take less showers for example! We make a big difference by what we do as individuals, remember that! And when you try and be more eco friendly you have to live with the fact that there are lots of people out there who just don’t care

    Cool video, great message and ideas, but not a 100% convinced by the "whole digital" transition. Streaming is dreadful for the planet, it takes a lot of data/power to get all those youtube videos/ images on our screens - and those storage/cloud fonctions are using a ton of energy (hello google!). So I think there's a balance to be found - to me, buying a book/film that I am going to keep, or pass around to friends/charity shops is not trash, and once it's been produced, it's not using that much energy. While rewatching videos/films/music on line does.

    I don't quite understand this "don't use plastic bottles" issue. Here in Germany, each bottle has some kind of deposit/pawn (I don't know which word is right in this context) on it. When the bottles are empty and you bring them back to the store, you get 15-25 cents PER bottle and the bottles are recycled. Even beer bottles are 8 cents I believe. So to summarize this rant, people here are motivated to bring the bottles back to the store.
    Aren't any other countries doing this? Don't get me wrong, I know that this whole thing doesn't change the fact that we have too much plastic in this world and not using them at all would be the best, but I don't understand why not every country is approaching this like Germany has for so many years. The weird thing is that I live exactly at the border to the Netherlands and Belgium and sometimes I go over there and they don't have this system either, like... Tf?

    Please be aware of the fact that tap water IS NOT safe to drink in a lot of places in the world!!! There are ways to cut down on plastic bottles but please do not say that it’s perfectly fine to drink tap ITS REALLY NOT. A lot of the time water filters don’t help much either. My grocery store has a place where you can fill up a giant jug full of purified water for super cheap. I recommend checking to see if somewhere near you does this. I bought a reusable plant based, biodegradable jug off amazon and that works for me.

    DISCLAIMER ABOUT ENERGY "SUPPLIER"
    It's a huge misconception that whoever you get your bill from is the company that provides electricity to your house. Switching to "green energy" is a hell of a lot more than changing billing companies, because literally all they do is send you a bill and get a percentage. Your energy is provided by the council/state government and it's in their control where the energy comes from.
    So telling people to change billing companies so that their using "green energy" is a huge misconception.
    However, it is good to look into how different companies are spending their money, but you will find most of them fund green energy sources such as wind and solar farms

    I wouldn't advise the energy saving lightbulbs. At least the ones called 'energy saving'. They're not eco-friendly if you check their production process. And they're not very healthy, as they don't provide the full spectrum of light. LED lightbulbs are much better, and don't use much energy.

    Protip: Ditch your liquid shampoo and gel douches for solid ones! It saves you a lot of money, tensides and wasted plastic bottles. Here in Austria we have a shop called Lush (it's in other countries too) which sells handcrafted, all natural soaps and solid shampoo etc. One bar of solid shower gel costs about 14€, which is 7 times as much as a normal bottle, but it lasts for at least a year, if not more. I use mine portion wise. A 1cm slice lasted me 4 months, since I keep it in a little watterproof box and I still have 80% of the big bar left. Best investment ever!

    I'm wondering how hot you usually wash your clothes. in germany, the "normal" programm ist about 30 or 40°C, which is totally necessary for my eco-organic washing agent www.frosch.de/Products/Washing/Powder-Detergent/Aloe-Vera-Sensitive-Powder-Detergent/ , because i learned in university that colder water means also more "agressive" substances and more enzymes in the washing agent to actually clean your clothes.
