I agree I've only kept discus a year now. But not chasing the pH is the best thing you can do. You only have to worry about the pH when you're breeding. Just keep a regular water change schedule based on the number of fish you have. Thanks! Glad to see more people discussing discus.
Excellent video! There is so much snobbery in the discus keeping community it's great to see common sense videos like yours explaining things to new discus hobbyists out there

Dope, perhaps the clearest water on any channel I’ve watched. Beautiful fish, both tanks are fire🔥Don’t have either species of fish but this channel is hella knowledgeable and fun.
Yo. Kevin, I've been waiting for you to do the big tank with discus. Man, I'm excited. Can't wait to see the new videos. You make this look so easy. Keep up the good work bro.
Have you tried a hang on back planter with a pathos plant in it? If you give it enough light it is known to suck up nitrates like crazy. And it doesn’t look to bad as a house plant. Do to the plant being out of the water it tends to grow faster than aquarium plants, which in turn suck up more nitrates.
@@KaveManAquatics If I was a Discus I'd take my chances in your tank over my own. I've been so leary to even try them, just like the electric blue Jack Dempsey, beautiful fish but they require the level of care that doesn't allow laziness or mistakes. So I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy yours. Thanks as always for sharing
They’re so beautiful. Wish to have some one day, but I’m only 5 months into the hobby, so I’ll stick with the fish I have for now. That white spot on my Mollie is gone. Thanks so much for the advice in the members only. 😊
Great video. I have learned from keeping reef tanks and corals that parameters are important but stability is more important. You may want to look into auto water making small daily water changes to keep your system stable with that large bio load. Also, plants are hard to grow in 85 degrees temp. 82 degrees will provide you more success with that. Discus diets are another thing that should be accounted for. Give them variety.
I’m ashamed at how my mind went to the wrong place when he said “A smaller hose is easier to pull out and wrap up.” Lol!!!! I know I can’t be the only one. My husband says my mind always stays in the gutter. After this, I realize he might be right. Lol!!!! Im so childish. In all seriousness, thank you for your videos. I’m a beginner and I’ve learned so much. 💛💛💛💛
Have my discus at 83.5 give or take with my angels 40% water change every other day. They are best buddies angels are more aggressive at feeding but I got a feeding cone and clean!!! Water good luck kevin
KEV HELP AGAIN, I had an ammonia spike in my tank, did a water change and added prime and stability daily for 1 week, the issue is my ammonia didnt move at all. I did a 70 percent water change and am at abt 1 or
Any problems with your severums pairing up and becoming aggressive? I only keep one because of that but would like to get a couple more. I have a 75 gallon.
Not really, I have 3 of them and they tend to chase each other…or it could just be 1 chasing the other 2 and I can’t tell cause they’re all identical lol But good thing is they are not aggressive with anyone else in the tank 😁
@@KaveManAquatics ok thanks, I found them. One of my tanks is just a small 10 gallon tank that I need to stay at a stable 84 degrees and I’ve bought 2 eheim jager’s and they just aren’t getting it to the correct temp and I’ve tried both a 50 watt and a 75 watt and I can’t get the temp higher then 75 for some reason
Hi, just wanted to ask are you still going to keep the discus with the silver arawana? I have a thousand liter tank that's about 2200cm long. I have about 15 discus in it a few years. I really want to try a silver arawana in it.
Also what do you feed your arawana? Do you feed something that floats so he stays up top feeding while the discus feed on the floor? Sorry for the questions, never had any arawana before, I think I am going to pick up a young one during the week about 10cm long.
When you put your fish into quarantine, do you use any medications to treat for diseases or infections? Or do you only treat for that stuff if you see anything start to appear while they’re in the quarantine tank for a couple weeks.
Kev, great videos very informative, thanks for making them. My question is what is the ratio male to female, in your peacock tank. I’m getting ready to make a all peacock tank and wasn’t sure if I should go with a all male tank or mix a 2-8 male/female it’s a 90 gallon aquarium. Thanks for any help
Can you mix different brands of beneficial bacteria.? When I first cycled my tank and for the past 3 months I’ve used Quick Start by API. Can I switch over to Seachem without any issues ?
So the fish stay healthy by adding prime and stability which adds bacteria into the water and when we change the water, is why we need to add more back in? Im just clearing this up in my head thinking...how does the "upped" bacteria stay in the tank after we stop using stability? It's not like we need to add something else in the tank for more bacteria to grow on to help with ammonia right?
Stability helps boost their production. Once they are “produced” and established they stay in the tank (unless you kill them off) they also don’t live in the water. That’s why you can water change and it won’t effect them…(again, unless you kill them off)
I'm lucky here in Melbourne Australia we have zero nitrates from the tap my Discus have less than five parts of nitrate at every water change I keep Malasian imports and the farms there do multiple water changes a week every day so I like to replicate that go online and check out these stunning Malasian discus
The nitrates issue is super divisive.many claim they keep their German "stendker" discus in upto 50ppm nitrates with no issue. Mine are imported fish from Singapore so I utilise RODI water to match their original water as they seemed intolerant of my high nitrate tap water.feeding beefheart also increases nitrate levels of course.its a tricky balance
@@KaveManAquatics there's lots of denitrate "resins" used here in UK & I'm not convinced.i use frogbit & Egeria in my sump the same as I would chaeto in a marine tank & it seems to keep it down.
So I bought a use 75 gallon a year ago for my wife's angelfish and when I arrive at the house with the tank there was a 6 inch discus and two big angelfish I tested there nitrates and it was over 160 ppm that discus was living in 160ppm for over a year so they can do well in it but not advisable
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks. How will I know when to stop Prime and Stability. Or cycle bio load has grown enough to handle the additional discus. Thanks Again. So glad you are into Discus.
