Cheyannes have a non adjustable pre-installed 3.5 mm stroke length as far as "adjusting on the fly" when you twist the end of the machine all it does is adjust the needle depth Not the stroke length

Thank you for your review! Helped me decide to get one in the new year :) Have you tried FYT disposable pen grips? They seem to work pretty well on my fellow tattooer's Hawk and more reasonably priced (foam grips).

Just got one secondhand.. I’ve been using an inkjekta flite v2 & only thing I don’t like about the hawk is how you can’t push the needles out with your thumb to clean it.. you actually have to remove the cartridge to push the needles out. Otherwise it outlines rather well!

For the cost you stated, the cons become major considerations. 3 - 4 month turn around for repairs and then they don't do a very good job of repairing, that's not acceptable. If I bought a high-end car and it broke down I would expect the dealer to repair it correctly and within a reasonable time frame. Further, if the power cord doesn't work as expected, then the machine doesn't work. Thanks for the info.
Imperfect Art's it’s all about what your goals are, so if your goal is to do “Ok” tattoos with a mediocre machine then go a head and cheap out and grab some Chinese garbage. If you want something that will improve your work, improve you clients healing time and overall experience in terms of pain and irritation then buy a good quality machine like a hawk pen or the like, it’s not perfect but no machine is and as stated, the good definitely out weighs the bad on this machine. If you can’t deal with fixing a machine after 500 hours of solid tattooing then you’re out to lunch on what your expectations for a rotary are. Either way enjoy your cheap machine, I’m sure your work and clients appreciate your thriftiness. 👍🏻

Have you got any idea if it will be any good? I’m a beginner btw. Would it be ok if I get quality needles etc?

I've been tattooing for about four years now and I have been working with coils and rotary's like Bishop and Swashdrive.
A lot of my work contains street shop stuff i guess, but lately i've been doing more and more heavy color packing, old school and even some oriental styled tattooing.
Would you recommend the Cheyenne pen for this line of work? Or even switching to cartridge style machines?
For me the advantage of switching needles fast would be a bliss as l like to do more color work but i'm a bit cautious since I only know how to work with needle bar style machines and grips.

Jim Otten hey, thanks for checking out the video, it’s always tough to say if someone is going to like or work well with any rotary machine but the hawkpen and sol nova are both very easy to adjust to and work with. In terms of use I can’t think of a style that you wouldn’t be able to do with one, obviously realism but I’ve also done proper traditional with whip shading and heavy lines with a hawk pen with no concerns. So it’d definitely be a good choice for typical street shop work and as long as you give yourself some adjustment time it will make you faster without a doubt! Hope that helps

Ok, so that's good to know you did some heavy lining and colorpacking with it as well. I asumed that it would be a good allrounder though I still have to get used to the idea of cartridges haha.

marc sicilia hey glad it helped! You definitely don't need any lubricants for the Cheyenne, I've used one for 2 years without any maintenance other than cleaning after each use

Hello Requiem Tattoo, Love your reviews mate. I wanted to order the spektra xion and already owned the hawk pen, Wanted to know your opinion as you owned both. Which one is good for more like traditional style? As the hawk pen hits too soft for me either because of the shorter stroke or less torque. Does the xion hit hard or the same? thanks
aley moreno thanks so much man. For sure the Xion for more traditional, I’ve lined with it up to a loose 18rd and you can turn it down low enough to whipshade with and it still hits perfectly. Xion wins for traditional 100%

Sorry man I don’t typically do instructional tattoo videos, speed is an individual thing, what works for me may not be a good choice for someone else.
@@anthonyjenkins3335 that’s cool man I’ll keep searching for some advice on here I’ve had this hawk pen for a while but I don’t use it too often because I can’t figure it out like a coil machine by the sound or feeling the back where the grommet goes while it’s running..I spent the money and like it a lot but I just need to get the hag of it. @@robertorobles953 I’m not sure what to tell you, there isn’t a more simple tattoo machine on the market you literally plug it in and turn it on to the speed that feels right, I’m not sure what your skill level is or familiarity with different machines but it doesn’t get any easier, you run it within the parameters given by cheyenne. I also have no clue what you’re talking about in terms of a grommet, the hawkpen has o rings at the grip end that have clearly indicated grooves for their placement but there are no grommets. All your problems with the machine may be solved by reading the manual it came with and familiarizing yourself with the function.
Man can I know which combo u use with hawk like a rotary machine or u can tattoo just any tattoo style
Hello Sir, recently I bought a Cheyenne Hawk Pen and using it with a Critical Atom power supply where I can't see the exact voltage. I did some soft shedding job, and, I found it's just a great machine. Thanks for your review. But Sir, I have difficulty while packing colour, donno why, but, it's not happening. Will you please help me saying the approx voltage needed to pack solid colour? I will be thankfull.
Udayan Banerjee Hey, I don’t really talk much tattoo technique online, each artist is going to be completely different in terms of what kind of speeds they prefer to run at so what I run my machines at specifically might not be helpful to anyone anyway, I would just recommend you try a few different speeds until you hit that sweet spot for you. The Cheyenne is versatile you’ll find the right range!
Thank you for the honest review. My wife (Hannah Aitchison) and I switched to the Hawk Pens a little less than a year ago with similar results and overall feelings you’ve mentioned. Hers just had a catastrophic failure a few days ago and I’ve begun the grueling process of internet searches for help. We accept that we’ll be buying backup machines in the next few days and admit we should have done that much earlier. However, do you have any suggestions for the smoothest service transactions and quickest turnaround time? Has anyone, besides myself, suggested to Cheyenne that they have at least one authorized service person in North America? Or, is that just me being selfish and impatient? Thanks again and come visit us in the States sometime!
Scott White hey Scott, so I got pretty lucky, I bought my pens (3 of them) through eikon and they made up for Cheyennes turnover shortcomings by always offering a loaner pen if I needed one until mine came back (Once 4 months later). That said, dealing with Cheyenne isn't a fast process and to be completely honest the repairs that I have had done are what I would call band aids rather than addressing the issue, ie. Replacing a blown motor with a refurb that only lasted 3 months in one case and had to go back again. I love the hawkpen as a daily driver machine and I genuinely feel like I'm a better tattooer with a pen style machine in my hand but in terms of what I'd recommend at this point it would be to try out the fk xion, better to deal with as a company and a better built machine in my opinion.

We’re going to try our luck with the Cheyenne service department and order some backups while we wait. I’m also going to ask if I can be trained as their North American service rep. Ok... I know it’s been two years. I apologize for the enormous delay. Here’s what happened: We have been using the Cheyenne Hawk Pens this entire time. We love them. At first, they broke down mid-tattoo a couple times and I shipped them to Germany for repair. The turnaround was within a month but communication was difficult. Repairs were free but didn’t last long before breaking again. I was told they were attempting to set up a North American service center or, at least, a contact person to assist with issues. We bought a backup machine. I think each original machine broke two or three times within the first year or so. I think the backup machine broke once. It sounds worse than it was. It was just a minor inconvenience but was starting to get annoying. Just as we were about to try some new brands, the breakdowns stopped happening. They’ve now run perfectly, every day, for a long time. In fact, we’ve loaned the backup machine to other artists to try and they’ve all loved it. They’ve all immediately bought one for themselves and use them to this day. So, we’re now very happy with the machines. Again, sorry for the delay in response. We’re currently reconfiguring and updating our studio during the shutdown and plan to reopen, with new protocols; engineering controls; and work practice controls, when the time is right for us, our artists, and our clients. What would be the best tattoo machine to get. I’ve been looking at the Cheyenne hawk pen as well as bishop machines. Having a hard time figuring out which to get. But I would love to know what machine you like.
R B I can’t answer that without knowing what style you work in, what speed you prefer, what your current setup is, etc. Both bishop and Cheyenne make great machines but they may or may not be the best fit for you based on what you like.
Hey I was wondering can the pen be used with different cartridges or can it only be used with Cheyanne cartridges ?
I found you today. I enjoyed your videos. I was thinking of subbing. How often to you plan on dropping videos? More so then a timeframe will you keep up your page periodically? I am because I watched all videos today. Also lengthy videos aren't issue for people such as myself trying to learn ) gather info.

are you able to switch cartridges from liner to shader during a tattoo? or do i need two of them for that
B0x1nk yep absolutely, one machine runs all cartridges, I usually just make a minor speed adjustment and depth adjustment to switch between needles, it's all really seamless as compared to a multi machine setup

Sir, as per your advice, finally I ordered a Cheyenne pen (Bronze) and I will get it tomorrow. It is quite expensive for me ,but, I will be using that for large tattoos for colouring and shading for better result, may be once or twice a week. Is it true that it has be used by Critical or Cheyenne power supply? Till date I use a simple Mercury double track (liner and shader) power supply and its running smoothly for last 7 long years without any difficulty. People say that this power supply is only for coil machines, but, I don't understand the logic behind it. So, can I use this power unit for running this pen? What you recommend? My 2nd question is for colouring and shedding what volt should I use?
Udayan Banerjee congrats! The Hawk pen runs off many different power sources and as long as you have a voltage meter you should be fine to use your existing power. I don’t give any technical tattooing advice because everyone works so differently, you’ll just have to see what works best for you speed wise!
What's the average time to get used to using one of these I've been using a coil machine for 20+years. And honestly do you like the rotary better than a coil machine.
DVL Exotics that completely depends on you and how you tattoo, it took me a few months to get used to rotaries in general, that was more than 10 years ago and they’ve gotten much better than they were then. In terms of how much I like them, I really think they’re infinitely better to tattoo with than coils, I had and still have a hard time with the idea of only using a rotary because of the history and the soul that a coil has, you don’t get that feel with a rotary but they tattoo so much better and so much more intuitively that it’s beyond worth it for me to use them. Not to mention the damage to your hands using a coil, I feel it after 20 years tattooing and it’s nice to not think about it at the end of a day like I would with coils. Hope that helps man

I do like to draw it's what got me into tattooing and still draw on paper a fair amount these days. So maybe the pens will work out quite well for me. Thanks for your time I appreciate it.
Hi, is there a very big difference beteewn Pen and Thunder? I want to buy Cheyenne Hawk Pen cause it's ligth and doesn't have much vibration. But is very expensive... Is Hawk Thunder as light and not vibration as the Pen? Thank you!
Regi chan I really think the pen feels better, better balance, slightly stronger and it's nice to not have to deal with the grip. The pen is very smooth, no vibration really so that's about the same.

My nephew is going to a tattoo school this August and I want to buy him a good quality set up, my friend told me Cheyenne Hawk Pen was his favorite, can someone help with their opinion on which is better, “fantom bishop” or “Cheyenne Hawk Pen” the price doesn’t matter I’m just trying to buy him the best tattoo gun possible, also what do you recommend I buy for a power supply/cords. My goal is to surprise him with a quality kit, can someone help me with advice
alfonso santillan you’re definitely not going to like my, or any other professionals advice. DONT allow him got to “tattoo school”!!!! There no such thing as a school that teaches tattooing well, he’s going to waste thousands of dollars have his ego boosted up because he’s paying people to “teach” him and the minute he leaves school to try to get a job in an actual tattoo shop he’s going to get laughed at by literally every reputable shop. Tattoo schools are a scam, they’re run by people who don’t know what they’re doing and are NOT competent tattooers to begin with and often have poor blood borne pathogens training which the pass on, attending one will set him back years and years in his chosen career and if you don’t believe me have him go to some of the good shops in the area, the ones he’s be trying to work at, and ask them what they think. If he’s a talented artist then he needs to find a real apprenticeship which isn’t hard if your dedicated and a good artist and if he’s not a talented enough to get one then he needs to find another career or spend his tattoo school money improving his artistic skills, that’s just reality. As for machine don’t waste your money until he makes some decisions about the best path. Most reputable supply companies will not sell to non tattooers or ship to home addresses anyway. You need to be a professional to purchase.

Hey, for starters I wouldn’t recommend a 3 year old Hawkpen or any other rotary that old, anything that old will be nearing the end of its service life and is probably going to either need to be overhauled by the manufacturer (at your expense) or at least will have some quirks. A new machine is always a better investment unless you know exactly what you’re buying and how many hours it has on it as well as conditions it was kept in, ie. was it kept under high humidity? Was it dropped? Cleaned with harsh chemicals? Etc.
As far as power supply goes you definitely don’t need one from Cheyenne, any metered power supply will work, just keep in mind the better quality the better and cleaner your power will be, this becomes more evident with more sensitive rotaries like cheyenne or any other reputable brand.

ecko911 I’d always recommend someone start with an apprenticeship from a good tattooer, that person will guide machine decisions based on what’s right for you.

King's Tattoo Dewas I wouldn’t recommend the thunder or spirit at this point they’re both out dated. All of the Sol machines (with the exception of the Luna) are versatile and well suited to linework and colour packing
I love them but, I've got two broken ones already as well. One after a year (fine) the second one just after two months! same issue, you can hear the motor but it is ''stuck'' it doesn't spin anymore. why is this happening? ugh.
Diana L. Ischy a year seems to be the daily service life for sure, there will always be QC issues with any big company but 2 months is pretty bad!
I know, I haven't heard a thing so i'm contacting them again. A year isn't bad for maintenance, but two months was ridiculous. I have things that are older and still functional in my fridge. And they weren't 600

Super late response but it’s probably a broken return spring
This happened with my kwadron equaliser spring and it was jamming the motor somehow so it wouldn’t push. Luckily the pen came with a tool to open it and replace the spring and before I knew it, it was up and running again

Keith Mahler how do I even answer that? The obvious, I wouldn’t recommend tattooing a rabbit, ever, doesn’t seem like enough but I’m at a loss so.....good luck with your future animal abuse endeavours?
You have to mark a rabbit ear to show them and clamp method seems inhumane

Can you use the Cheyenne with any other power supply ? From South Africa. Just ordered myself a hawk pen
katleho buthelezi yea there are quite a few power supplies that will run it well, anything from eikon, critical, workhorse irons and Cheyenne has their own power supply as well.
Can’t afford that would love to try it I’ve used coils for 38 years so my tendons are screwed but I bought a pen of off mithra for 400 and it’s got. 3.5 stroke but I find that anybody of used it on said it hurt that was anywhere from 7 to around 9 volts it’s a FYT don’t know if you heard of them but I’m thinking of taking it back have you heard of this company FYT I’ve only see n a few videos on it and the most I think are just using the cartridges if you have heard of it please let me know
Jeff Leblanc unfortunately like everything else in life you get what you pay for, cheap pens in my experience just don’t preform well. I can’t off the top of my head recommend a rotary with a lower price point that I really like but I’m currently testing out the new Stigma Thorn, it so far has been a really great machine that’s got a mid range price. I’m doing a full review soon but it may be a good option for you to check out.
What aftermarket cable do you suggest?

romanboi10 so then you got the incredibly rare situation where one left the factory not up to spec, again why bother commenting?? You’re situation is clearly the exception and obviously it’s not a common issue. To date I’ve bought 5 hawkpens, some for myself some as gifts and never had one issue like you’re describing, hence my video detailing that. Your experience differs? Make a video of your own about how shitty the hawkpen is and link to your work to prove your opinion matters. End of discussion.
