LAST WEEKS VLOG: • Working a Composition ...
Last week I travelled to North Wales to hook up with my great pal Jason Jones to photograph Watkin Path & Falls. I stayed over so the following day I decided to photograph the Not so famous Lone Tree at Llyn Dinas. Well, that was the plan at least.
Shooting Landscapes in poor light, is it worth it?
Jason suggested I photograph the tree at first light as the setting and location lent itself to a sunrise shot. Sadly it wasn't to be. I looked out from my warm van to be greeted with a very foggy morning. The light was really pants too. Oh well, it's a good enough excuse to snuggle back into my warm sleeping bag.
The light later that morning looked quite favourable so I decided to head off and photograph the tree. I was parked in the car park next to the Lone tree at Llanberis so I just thought I'd have a peep at that tree before I set off for Llyn Dinas. The water was high and calm. It looked amazing. I was there after all so why wouldn't I?
A few interesting and quite amusing things happened that morning. Watch the video and I hope you enjoy it.
THANK YOU
Gary

For me the shot with the birds really worked, loved it. Brought some life and movement to a scene we all know so well
lol wasn't quite what I had in my head but oh well lol Cheers Peter
I liked the swans and birds, especially the one sat on the tree. Very different.
MrDs131 - didn’t quite go to plan but everyone likes it 😁
Love the bit with the birds all around the tree at the 5 minute mark. I think the one ON the tree sets the picture off great.,
Thank you very much!
Hello Gary, a lovely little vlog which we were allowed to watch your thought processes. Of course, one of the best things about your vlogs is your commitment, enthusiasm and passion. Well done indeed Sir,
Oh no.....what a nightmare I woke up this morning switched on UA-cam and was presented with the lonely tree picture yes the now famous one at lake P....... I switched off and decided to carry on with my wallpaper striping! after ten minutes of that I decided to have another peek at your blog I am so glad I did it got much better I loved the picture with the swans and what looked like a crow in the tree, well done.....oh by the way my first picture of a lonely tree was taken near the Elan Valley but that was in 1971 yes I do really need to get out more!..thanks for sharing.....
Des Gardner - oh thanks for taking another look and I’m glad you enjoyed it. You should take another shot, a then and now picture. Would be interesting to see.
I would definitely recommend subscribing to this channel, humour, knowledge and beautiful images - one of the top photography channels on the Tube.
You're my new best pal 👍👍 Thank you for saying
As a photographer myself, it is refreshing to watch your videos. So many photographers talk about the technical aspects of taking the photo and that is fine for those who are learning how to use their camera in various situations. As a person who is adept at the technical aspect, I enjoy listening to your perspective on composition and how you approach the different challenges associated with capturing the scene in the most artistic way possible. In addition, your post-processing work is stunning and I love the tones you use in the final image.
Very informative to see how a pro goes about assessing compositions. Thank you.
Thank you
Hi Gary, love all you videos and I always learn something new. A note on the Iconic locations, a lot of pro photographers hate them, BUT us common amateurs love the fact that a location is "ready to shoot" and all we have to do is turn up on a good day, at the right time, with the right gear. And main reason for me, is that I can put my own photo on my wall and be proud of it. So please keep showing us the best locations you know and we can check them out for ourselves. Thanks. Lessons, yes please. 🙂
Rob Jackson - that’s a great point well made Rob. I always say the same thing. I was sleeping 50yrds away from the tree, I mean, why wouldn’t you? Cheers 👍🏻
I have got to say you like the normal shot of the tree BUT I have to say 100% the tree with birds WOW WOW WOW it’s unique perfect.
Gary,
re: using the duck food -- Holy Alfred Hitchcock, that is hilarious!
I'm looking forward to your "spreading pine-scented sawdust" on the regurgitation. Nice "pop" on the last shot, great separation from a background that could have been detrimental.
Thank-You,
Mike
Hi gary, I also liked the tree shot with the swans & seagulls added a something to it. Great idea showing all the different angles etc for a shot. Great channel, keep it up. Colin
I photograph the Lone tree at Llanberis every time I visit home - place never gets boring, great Vlog BTW
Wow at 5:12 ! What an amazing photograph, excellent work! Great video!
Hello Gary, the vertical composition of the tree is very appealing, the reflection in the water doubles the tree. The one with the ducks is like a party for those birds it creates a good wildlife image with the tree. Your story telling is also quite interesting too. On the vlogging issue you stated Gary, if I lived in England I would go out with you also for the humor and great conversationalist that you present yourself to be and with the fun of the company of your personality. I enjoy the shows here as well.
Thanks for the video Gary, off to Llanberis for sunrise in the morning. Then onto Anglesey for the red squirrels. Love North Wales.
Gary , another great video. I like how you show what works and doesn't work from something that's hard to shoot, you gave me some more tips. Thanks again
Another great video Gary. You should know by now that if you feed the birds as soon as you put bread out gulls will smell it from miles away LOL!! Great images as always. I really got the idea of working the scene on the second tree, and the composition you ended up with was probably the most pleasing. If I was living in the UK I would be on the vlogging experiences in a heartbeat, brilliant idea and hope it really works out for you, and the participants. I guess I'll just have to be content with watching the videos. Thanks for sharing!!
Wonderful vlog - the swans & birds shot was hilarious ;-) Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Having met Gary before on a totally unrelated shoot........anyone vacillating on this offer...........go for it............this fella is the real deal
You're my new best pal Steve. That is such a nice thing to say. Thank you 👍👍👍👍
Really nice photo with the bird's
Cheers Philip 👍👍
cracking bit of composition on the shot mate. Also, good idea with the bird food! I love an image like that where it takes a well known scene and adds something totally different to it. Even if it isn't the hitting all of the so-called rules. Rules are for breaking! Keep up the good work and enjoy Thursday!
Excellent work mate. Loved the image with the swans and the duck too. Very good video
Beautiful photos!!! I liked the photo with the swans!!!
Hi Gary, thanks for an inspirational vlog. Been tired and not very inspired. This gave me a solid dose of inspiration and positive energy.
Very interesting thought process on your composition at Llyn Dinas Gary. After watching your vlog I was just randomly watching other videos from other people and came across the very same location shot by someone else. Quite interesting to put the 2 shots side by side. It emphasised your points even more. Thumbs Up
Just watching this last night (playing catch-up on your videos) and suddenly realised where that second tree is - along the river from Beddgelert. I took some photos of it myself on my phone a few years back when I was out walking and sketching with the wife. Checked back on my phone and saw that I took about 4 photos but can't belive I didn't take one with the tree lined up in the gap between the mountains. I need to sharpen up my compositions!!!😄 Good to see how you worked the comp Gary
It’s tough to get good shots in low light but that much rewarding when you do! Another great video Gary! I like how you explain composition in much greater detail.
Thank you very much 👍👍
yea me too that shot looked fantastic would love a copy
Which picture Jeff? Email me (gary@garygough.co.uk) the one you want and I will email you a (Hi-Res) copy.
@@GaryGough the pic was when u were trying to get the long ex off the tree in the water and I wanted some birds in the background and got more than birds than u expected and the 2swans ps I love the photo off the wreaked boats the one in colour the pan one is fantastic u know it’s good when u can look at it for ages and get drawn on to it
Very nice love the birds in the shot makes for great foreground interest
Top-shelf photography and teaching. Loved how you shared your thoughts while cycling through the various compositions.
But I really, really, really hate to tell you this but... the birds shot was my favorite. I know it would kill you but the birds might out-sell the other. The rest of us would get a chuckle out of that. :-)
Look forward to all of your educational videos coming up!
Another great one Gary. Looking forward to seeing your go-to vlogs in future
Fifteen seconds in, I saw that lone tree.I knew what was coming- Yes, worth it !
Looking forward to your how-to's .
Cheers 👍👍
I actually loved the swan shot when cropped in
The classic tree taken Gary style! Just the extra thought with the ducks and swans 🦢 love it! Love the second tree, a tester but you got a great shot. Thanks Gary, 😊👍 wonderful
It wasn't how I had planned the duck shot though :) lol Cheers Mali 👍👍
I love the Welsh countryside, but never photographed there. I'd love to get the chance to do some photography there sometime in the future. Poor light and bland skies a plenty at this time of year, but you nailed some beautiful shots, Gary. Nice work.
coool shot with all the feeding birds !!!!!
What with work and family life I usually find the only times I get to go out with my camera is in poor light, but I’ve taken my most favourite shots in bad light. Just need to work with what we’ve got and just enjoy being in the outdoors.
I enjoy watching your videos Gary, cheers!
Thanks again John 👍👍
Excellent video and a cracking shot at Llanberis.
Once again Gary, you nailed it! I have taken it upon myself to name this video " The Tree (s) "... Excellent lesson on the practice of composition even when the light is not at it's optimum. Very much enjoyed this & speaking of lunch, time to go grocery shopping!
Bill on the Hill... :-)
lol Thanks as always and enjoy your shopping 👍👍
It's a shame you woke up to such a grey day but as we see the final shot is absolutely beautiful. Love the passage of light reflecting out to infinity. I would love to, maybe someday join up with you on the new blogging trip. Being here in the U.S. makes it a little tough but maybe someday...
Thanks for all you do for we take a lot away from your videos...
One day Chaz. Cheers 👊
I thought the lone tree with the birds was excellent, great video
lol Cheers Andrew
What a great idea the day out wish I had thought of that but I am not a pro so don’t need to. Your a great photographer I must add I need to chat about Harris and Lewis with you. The second lone tree very cool with the red house in and a reflection to
Brilliant! Great to see something different from the lone tree, we all know the image and I’ve even visited myself and was well...disappointed. I thought your attempt to do something different using the duck food was so simple it was pure genius and I will now be adding some duck food to my camera bag for those just in case moments. As always, enjoyable, informative, and educational, thanks for sharing!
lol Cheers Gary. Very kind as always. Looking forward to the Isle of Arran in a couple of weeks 👍👍
Enjoyed this very much Gary and loved the contrast of the red house against the dark landscape and the tree composition on the other side looked great. Excited to hear your announcements about future plans for the channel and also your experiential days.
Cheers Scotty 👍👍
Nice vlog Gary, loved the sharp crystal clear images you managed to get. Also love the fact that even after 20 years 'in the industry' you still have that desire to try something new. As a keen photographer trying to get back into it after raising a family and reaching the ripe old age of 50+ I follow several UA-cam photographers but you are a country mile ahead in just your outlook and approach to photography.
how to be absolutely spot on, brilliant Gary
Cheers again Steve
Keep up the good work... take us with you when you go out side and explore..
Love the look of that second lone tree Gary , and well taken
Cheers David 👍👍
After listening to loads of podcasts on certain subjects On Spotify i thought I would see if there was any good photography podcasts on there and I discovered the photography nerds! I love your shows it passes the time of day away and keeps me entertained at work ! Learning and laughing! Then discovered all your videos!! Brilliant!! Keep it up guys!! 👍🏻
Very kind, thank you
Hi Gary, stumbled upon your videos a few days ago, now I can't stop watching them, even dug out my nikon d3100 out and can't wait to use it again!
Thanks Gary and keep up your great work.
gary tree with swans was epic no one got that shot . i did same yesterday not one bird appeared lol great job keep it up
Very helpful vlog Gary. It's nice that you explain so well how you look at it all. Thanks again.
Dennis H. Thank you Dennis 👍🏻
I absolutely loved the first image! It's bloody brilliant. Others were best too. I love how you describe your thought process throughout
Stunning. Keep on the good work.
Really looking forward to the educational videos Gary, I need all the help I can get
Great Vlog and I really think the " How to videos " are a great idea.
Always enjoy your videos, great images and the benefit of your experience and knowledge. Actually I loved the image with the birds!
lol Even the wife said that was the best shot 😁
Thanks Gary, enjoyed seeing your thought process in action to get these great shots
Cheers Tevor, very kind 👍👍
looking forward to the educational videos, i like how you spent lots of time at the tree looking for that one composition. brill.
Cheers Dennis
love your videos Gary .Thank you
Those photos are beautiful, I loved the swans one. Your personal approach works well. Liked the walking around a subject to see different perspectives. I treat a tree like a model they often look like figurine's. On Dartmoor they are beautiful torn by the conditions . I'm living in a van between Dartmoor and Bodmin and have been inspired by your videos I need to learn lightroom to your level to make all this beauty seen
PS/LR tutorials coming up 👍👍 Thank you btw
Outstanding as usual xx
Hi Gary great vlog love north wales especially around the Llanberis area. Parents had a caravan at snowdon view for 40 years. Jason’s knowledge of the area must be a big plus for you.
Glad to hear your going to do some educational vlogs I’m sure watchers will learn a lot...Neil
40 years, wow. I'm guessing with all your holidays there, you know the area inside out?
I actually liked the duck shot, thought it was funny 😃
Can't wait for your new lesson series! 👍👍
Mister Gary, it was very very inspirative ! :-)
Gary Thanks for Sharing this Video, Awesome Shots, I'm Glad that Flu is Gone. Great Photography & Vlogging Work
Fighting fit (for now) again :) Cheers Paul 👍👍
Very good! I really appreciated the pros and cons of the composition as you worked it, and why you chose the position you settled on. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Robert, very kind 👍👍
Great shot, i think there is beauty all day just have to catch it ;)
Totally agree Heath. Thank you 👍👍
Not yet but I will get there, hopefully this Spring/Summer
Another couple of awesome images, love your passion and explanation. Wish I was back in the uk would definitely hang with you.
Thank you Lynette 👍👍
Great video and images as always, despite the grey weather you still manage to get a decent shot.
Looking forward to new educational videos, maybe I'll learn something.
Many thanks
John
Oh, I do enjoy your vlogs, they are always interesting, informative and with great results so thanks again.
great vlog gary, fantastic images and thanks for the talk through about the compositions
Another great Vlog Gary, great spot that Jason turned you on to .. looking forward to your new series
Cheers Darren 👍👍
Thank you, as always for an informative vlog. I particularly enjoyed how you spent time finding the 'right' composition. Your final photograph nailed it.
Mike in Oz
Gary, good start in 2019, like the swans ....
It seems to be everyone's favourite shot. Damn birds lol thank you 👍👍
Great vlog again, Gary, really nice shots. But I really found myself drawn to the one with the swans and ducks, it added a really nice fun element 😂
lol Even the wife said that was the best shot 😁
@@GaryGough it reminds me of a piece by one of the early surrealist photographers.
No luck catching them swans then? Great video Gary, enjoyed watching that!
Didn't bother Simon, they taste just as bad as Red Squirrels and Golden Eagles 😁😁🤣 😁😁🤣
First Excellent video and I just love how you explain working through the composition. Great idea for the one day vlogging come along.
Cheers Gary 👍👍
I am new to your videos and really starting to enjoy them. Great job. Love the image.
Thank you David 👍👍
I come from vietnam i love your vlog. And i still looking for more edit photo
Thank you
Hi Gary, you are the man!!👍🏻👍🏻😉
ruud kuiper very kind, thank you 👍🏻
Great stuff Gary, love your enthusiasm 👍
Cheers Lee 👍👍
Good one! I photographed the 'famous' lone tree in very poor, grey light - A1 position, but with the tree slightly to the right of where you had it ( getting the curve of the tree to the right of the 'v' of the hills, to rhyme with the curve of the horizon). Cliche or not, poor light or not, it's one of my favourite images that I've taken. The setting sort of does half the compositional work for the photographer.
You're right, it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks, if you want it, shoot it! Top man 👍👍
Great video mate, love your work ☺
Cheers Paul 👍👍
Really enjoyed that video Gary.
I like how when you threw a bit of bird in Llyn Padarn you had all the wildlife of North Wales turn up, I did chuckle at that.
I've walked around Llyn Padarn perhaps 7 or 8 times in the past 12 months and not once spotted that tree. Super impressive how hard you worked that composition to get the shot. It's great to see someone with as much experience yourself work a scene like that to show your thought process which ultimately led to some fantastic shots. For me personally I thought you landscape shot of that scene, the Red house opposite distracted my attention away from the grandeur of the tree itself, but of course, that's my opinion and in no way means it's a bad shot!
It would seem you're a bit of a business wizard too. Never have I seen anyone offering vlogging workshops/experiences. I've considered vlogging my own adventures, but I don't really have anything to offer that much more experienced and certainly more impressive photographers already offer. People like yourself, Jason Jones, Thomas Heaton, Simon Baxter, Adam Gibbs, James Popsys, Andrew Marr, Adam Karnacz to name but a few. But it would be very interesting to see you work when out vlogging.
Anyway, rattled on enough. Keep up the great Gary, love your videos and images. Always insightful and helpful!
Thank you, Gareth, very kind words. It really isn't a problem to dislike somebody's work, that's the nature of photography and art. Having said that, I'm of course right and you are wrong! 😁😁🤣 Why not join me if you fancy it? Doesn't matter where you live in the UK, I'll be there at some point this year
@@GaryGough I very well might do that mate, appreciated.
Hi Gary shame about the sunrise shot you wonted but the Tree & Large rock was really nice esp with the red cabin
& enjoyed the Vlog .
Cheers John 👍👍
Great vlog, great images, love the lone tree.
Hope your car is comfier than my Honda Civic was, I haven't test my Volvo V40 yet. Maybe summer solstice this year I'll try it again at St.Abbs light house
I personally preferred the Swan shot! 👌 As for the obvious composition.. For me, you still needed to be further to the left. Saying that, I've never shot there, so no idea if that is doable or not!? Really enjoyed the vid though.. 👍
Hi Gary! Love your videos. You asked for questions and feedback so mine is, do you ever photograph Prairie and lowland/woodland type locations? Could use some composition ideas like you offered in this video. I would have to travel a 1,000 miles to get to a mountain range. Thank you!!
Thank you. I created a woodland video last year. It should help with your compositions. ua-cam.com/video/tBPD_nFuh74/v-deo.html 👍👍
Great to hear your doing some lesson videos. The funny bit is even the thumbs down count on UTubes activity algorithm.
Indeed they do :) Cheers 👍👍
Hi gary very good as usual well done I see you have a canon powershot camera g7 x mark 11 may I ask why
do you need it when you have such a good full frame camera and what do you think of the powershot.
roy hall - it’s my vlogging camera Roy. I’ve used it for the past 2 years. It’s light and small. It’s difficult to vlog with the 5D because it doesn’t have a flip-out screen. I’ve tried using my 1DX to vlog with too just like Peter McKinnon does but again, it’s difficult because it doesn’t have a flip-out screen. It’s also heavy. Trust me, when I’m about to climb a mountain I go as light as I can. That’s getting old for you 😁😁
super :) !!
Cheers again :)
Nice wee video , new sub
Hi Gary love the videos and I am learning landscape photography, I am wondering if it’s possible to turn my passion of landscape photography into profitable work and is so what kind of ways could this be achieved please
It's absolutely worth it, I've transformed dull, bland photo's into gold ;-)
Glad to hear you're going to put something relevant to photography on your channel and not just your inane ramblings! LOL!! Just kidding! Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to those educational videos!
Right, that's it back to my inane ramblings :) Even I get bored of my own voice. It's OK for you, you only have to listen to it for 10 minutes every week. Imagine what I have to put up with 😁🤣
@@GaryGough hadn't thought about it that way... my condolences to you for having to go through that all the time!
RugbyLock0914 - none taken lol
Hi Gary, nice locations but for me that second composition doesn't work.
Fair enough Justin. Even though I stuck by the rules of thirds? Not a problem though, that's the beauty of art 👍
@@GaryGough i wouldn't say it's because of the rule of thirds, but, well, a lonly tree looks nice as the main subject in a minimalist composition, I find the eye gets a bit confused here. I also understand that the very flat light didn't do you justice either.
