I can relate to the tripod sinking feeling, was while taking a shot of a different shipwreck. Knee deep in a wave didn't help me either. I still got my other shots in and had a great time. Great video Gary, thanks.
Reminds me of the Peter Iredale shipwreck on the Oregon coast. It’s nothing but a rusty skeleton now that is slowly diminishing in it’s battle with the ravages of saltwater and sand. Tricky photographing and filming conditions did not deter you from getting some nice images and a very entertaining vlog. Well done Gary! Cheers!
brilliant vlog gary, it's a beautifull place, after living in Weston super mare for twenty years(now living in Gloucester)I know that it's the second highest tide fall in the world so you will always be racing it. stunning images of the SSnornen
Welcome to the Bristol Channel, Gary. I live on the other side near the Gower and the tides catch so many people out. There is a caravan park not far from me and when there is a high tide it scares the hell out of the visitors as the tide sweeps right in and cuts off access to the park.
Ha ha ha I was ready to write about the cds!!!! Loved the afternoon images, the two long exposures of the wreck and the first two of the "sticks". Thank you too Mr. Gough!!!
Hi, Gary, I live about 12 miles from that shipwreck and have tried it many times. But it still surprises me that so many people don't realise that the Severn Estuary has the second highest tidal range in the world! I nearly lost my camera bag and it's contents to an incoming tide at Kilve (about 20 miles down the coast) a couple of years ago. It's better to shoot the coast around here as you follow the tide out.....and safer too.
I've just been watching this from Minehead further down the coast and I'm shouting at the vlog for you to get off the beach quickly as the tide comes in so fast and high!
Loving your positive attitude Gary, even with the tide coming in so quickly, tripod sinking into wet sand etc., you still keep smiling and stay determined to get 'the shot', always an entertaining and worthwhile watch :-)
Not what Gary would regard as a successful shoot but the enthusiasm shone through to make it a great watch. We've all been there and you just have to go again. I know that sense of excitement at a new location. Enjoyed it Gary.
Gary, If you stick it out, it's liable to get wet! What a great bit of history that also provides a striking visual opportunity. Your initial shots look like the ribs of a long-deceased leviathan telling an intriguing story. I very much appreciate your recounting the history of SS Nornen and stating that he crew all survived. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a PADI Divemaster, I am always aware that wrecks may actually be gravesites and should be treated with appropriate reverence. It's good to know this is not the case with the Nornen. Thank-You, Mike
Gary, You didn't convey disappointment in any way. I am very pleased that you emphasized that all survived. You are always a first-class act! Thank-You, Mike
Well, that was exciting 'edge of the seat' stuff. The pictures you created are beautiful. Great work. Congratulations on 35,000 subs ... and rising - like the tide!
Great to see how you planned the shots, exciting stuff, lucky you have your five a day eh? thanks for sharing some really nice shots, quite like the moving sand shot funny enough
Love this spot at Brean, often take my dogs down for a beach walk or drive our campervan onto the beach. Not sure how familiar you are with the area but there is a great beach light house just around the corner. There is also Brean Down Fort at the other end of the beach. Love living in the South West, glad you could visit us Bary
A great video, Gary! I didn't know about this wreck at all. Congratulations on the 35,000 subscribers. I will have to check it out some time. I'm not sure when you were there, but you might do well on spring tides (full moon and new moon and a few days either side) when the tides will go out much further, but also come in much higher. And in somewhere as flat as that, the tides will move even quicker than normal during spring tides, so you have to consider your own personal safety apart from anything else. But at any time, the approaches to the Severn estuary have one of the strongest tidal currents and fastest moving tides in the world and, as Andy Roberts points out, has the second largest tidal range in the world.
On my doorstep (almost) and I’ve never been, must change that! Great images as always, great to see the enthusiasm, and I’m pleased you didn’t try to pass that blurred shot off as intentional camera movement. Looking forward to Skye see you then, and rest assured I’ll bring lots more of your 5 a day.
I have used them Gary, when I visit Norfolk. Similar situation as you were in in this video. The Wash at Hunstanton is very soft sand. Just give them a few seconds to settle. You can use old CDs also, as I think Thomas Heaton does. Good luck anyway. Look forward to your next video.
Glad you survived Gary....we have a similarly dangerous beach not far from me (Camber) where the water curls around behind you in channels and on big spring tides it outruns people (tragically 7 died a couple of summers ago)...good to see you highlighting the dangers...and also of course and importantly..JAFFA CAKES..YES!...the food of the Gods !!
Awesome video Gary, awesome images as always. I'm with @DC Allan I like the camera movement, it gives it a bit of an ethereal look. A true master at work. Thanks for sharing!!. When is the next PhotoNerds video going to be? I miss you three chewing the fat!!
Hi Gary. WOW - "intense" indeed ! I'd never heard about this wreck but I'll be paying a visit now I've seen your video. Love the images - can't believe you managed so many in the circumstances to be honest. Really enjoyable video Gary. Many thanks for sharing. P.S. There's nothing worse than an ugly groyne ;)
That had to be very frustrating, but I'd say persistence paid off there, Gary. Lovely shot of the wreck. It's amazing how much the tripod sank just in those few seconds. Nice shot of the groynes too. 35K now :)
Being from South Wales I would have assumed you would be familiar with the Severn tidal system? Saying that I actually got caught out myself at the very same location....had my tripod jammed between the bow of the boat for a different perspective... there is a permanent puddle in front og the bow and you have to step around it.. I miscalculated and had to step into what I thought was the puddle - good job I was holding the tripod & camera above my head - I was waist high when I stepped into the puddle! You still managed to come away with a few good images and I am sure like myself you will be wary of that tide next time :) Good vlog.
Brilliant vlog Gary and congrats on the 35k subscribers, Casey Neistat better watch out...... Fantastic collection of pics and for ugly groynes those blue hour shots are brilliant. Always great to see your enthusiasm for getting a great pic and how it pays off, great work. Many thanks John
Very entertaining as ever Gary. That was a mighty fast tide. My wife also tries to convince me that Jaffa Cakes are healthy due to their orange content.
Interesting vlog Gary, had the same with the photo we discussed on FB (black `n white sunset wit 2 exposures). Nearly lost my camera bag when the tide rushed in. Landscape photographers should be skilled meteorologist as well :) Glad to see it happens to the pro`s as well..
Well done Gary, we can always count on you to get something positive even when conditions aren't the ideal. And the added bonus of diet tips, 5 a day covered by 5 Jaffa cakes! YES, GET IN! all the best, Del
lol I have a confession to make. I think I over-dosed on fruit that day, I ate the whole box. Fruit is so good for you so why would you lol I could feel the weight just falling off 😁😁

I'm not sure the health police had 5 jaffa cakes in mind when suggesting five a day.. Were you shooting with a Lee ten stop Gary? The blue cast reminds me of my own copy though it works well in this location
Of course Jaffa Cakes are part of your 5 a day. I was a good boy and ate about 10 of them :) Yes it was a Lee 10-stopper. I actually like the blue cast :)
Hi Andrew, I did indeed. I wanted a tide-in shot but the high tide didn't come in as high as I wanted so I was disappointed in the end. I'll still put the vlog out though.

Yes, it was mental. A lot of fun though. Thank you
I think the long exposures that was spoiled by your sinking tripod might have potential as an abstract.
Nice work Gary!

Great shots Gary, Get yourself a ledlenser torch, a bit of light painting would have brought the colour out on the Wreck 👍
It was too bright for any kind of LED torch. A touch of flash maybe :)
Awesome images, including the sinking camera. 35k well deserved sir.
