Can't recommend whether or not to go bare metal on the next alpha release or to wait but I CAN say that I have been running cosmic bare metal since alpha 1's release and it has been perfectly fine for me and is constantly getting better. If you are waiting until cosmic is stable enough for daily use, it's probably fine already aside from a few missing features here and there.
Oh yeah, we’re gonna test the alpha’s on bare metal from now on. It’ll just be better performance all around. I’ll probably wait until the official release to add it into my workflow - but I definitely will 👌🏼
Bluetooth works If installed on Hardware. It has a Bug, though, and doesnt remember if you disabled it. For me, one of the best Things is the Management of virtual Desktops If you have multiple Monitors. Im using cosmic since 3 weeks as Main system in my NixOS Laptop, it never Froze. Anno 1800 Sometimes hangs when switching virtual Desktops, but issues Like that Happen even on Gnome so i still think cosmic is quite stable, especially in an Alpha Release!
Yeah, I figured it was because I was in a vm. We’re gonna check the next alpha out on bare metal! But nice, so you’re using it as your main daily driver and it’s been good so far? That’s awesome and gives me even more hope for the official release 🤘🏼
To answer concerns about the Ambassador program, it isn't about creating content to give fake positive reviews for COSMIC, but about creating good content in general. A great example is how Brodie Robertson did two livestreams for both Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 where he was testing COSMIC, finding bugs, and creating bug reports while live on stream. I'd personally like to see some reviews of the developer experience, or of the experience in contributing to COSMIC, but perhaps that's too soon. Marketing probably thought offering prizes would be a good way to encourage people to create content for COSMIC. You do have to keep in mind that the System76 marketing team is coming from the perspective of hardware sales, which pays the bills for COSMIC development.
That’s actually pretty fair I just honestly thought people would make content about it even without the prizes, so to throw that little caveat in there, it just felt as if the possibility of “fake reviews” (which isn’t even a thing in the Linux world - not that I know of) could happen. Nonetheless, I don’t think it’s some awful step that they took as a company, just something I thought to bring up.
the sooner ppl test in bare metal, the sooner system 76 can note bugs when in bare metal, and make sure the next alpha doesn't have those same bugs it's a feedback loop, the more computers that try out the cosmic desktop, the faster system 76 can work on making sure it doesn't suck
Love to see the newest updates.

Your comment encapsulates current Cosmic very well "doesn't look that good but still I can do ii if I want".

For me, it does much better on bare metal. I’m using it side by side with KDE plasma in Arch. The Cosmic greeter is trivial to switch between DEs.
Yeah, I figured as much. We will definitely be checking out the next alpha on bare metal 🤘🏼
