This benchmark of the Xbox Series X includes a partial tear-down to help show the construction of the cooler. We also referenced a clip from TronicsFix (linked below) to talk about the vapor chamber design and how vapor chambers are constructed. The vapor chamber's pillars are obvious in the tear-down footage, so we show some factory floor footage to show how vapor chambers (like those found in the Xbox Series X) are made. We left our heatsink attached to the PCB, as we didn't want to disturb the thermal paste; however, since most of what we're measuring is flip-chip BGA packaging, the silicon is actually closer to the reverse side of the PCB than to the top of the case for MOSFET and memory modules. This is useful and convenient for measuring thermals with minimal disturbance to the cooler assembly. Disassembly is fairly easy and the Xbox mostly resembles a small form factor PC (e.g. mini-ITX / SFF box), except packed into an extremely dense, small assembly of parts. That makes for interesting thermal testing and analysis.

@gamers nexus it would be cool if you designed some custom dust filter for the series x and then see how it performs. As with a dust filter if it holds good temps still this could last forever

@@ST0RMER0N We’ll have to see how this all plays out over the next couple of years and if we see failures. While it’s possible Sony “forgot” about some GDDR6 modules and they’ll fail over time it seems like an odd oversight given the rest of the thermal design.
@@jamessnyder3807 Yes I agree. Although it only takes one component to fail for the entire system to be bricked. Especially the memory. We will see over the next few years how effective both systems are.
@Rinku Multani what made you come to that conclusion? The series x has a higher clock than the ps5
@Rinku Multani What does GPU clock speed have anything to do with it. PS5 memory is reaching critical temps on a flat empty desk! Its not overheating because the clocks speeds of GPU are higher! Plus XSX has a higher CPU clock speed. Also, PS5 is missing some RDNA 2 features. So... its just an oversight from Sony which will hopefully be fixed in the pro version.

Tbf, as a PlayStation fan I think Xbox wins this time. For thermals at least. I’m currently building my first pc (for video editing/gaming) I’m picking the parts I need for airflow and cooling and I’m a bit a annoyed Sony designed the PS5 the way they have.
Seeing its memory shoot up 90c was shocking and concerning
It's mainly sony fanboys though
@@KINGPHANTOMw85 rabid fanboys in every camp. All equally stupid.
Hey so part of the Xbox intake vents are possibly obstructed for a purpose. When you design a machine, in some cases the chassis comes first and you can see how everything fits after. The designer will put holes in case they need them, and they will get blocked if not needed. What is most likely going on here is that they want a small amount of restriction Vs the exhaust to force the fan to suck air through the heatsink chassis. If the air was free flowing, it would all flow through the heatsink and around the chassis in the center. By being restricted, it forces the fan to *suck* air through the chassis actually improving the thermals. This is just my take being an electrical engineer and working with some mechanical engineers on a product that must fit in the same footprint as the product we are replacing.
Yeah. In an more opened area for flow may help the amount of airflow coming from fan, but doesn’t allow you to bring in the air specifically where u want it coming in at
Legit been waiting for months on this. Thank you!!! Well worth the wait.

Having just switched to the Series X from the 1X, the power saving mode is so fast on the Series X, that it boosts as fast as the 1X in instant on mode. Hope that makes sense. Basically, if you're concerned about saving power and internet data, use power saving mode on Series X
I use power saving mode and was surprised at how fast it boots up still.
Really excellent work! It’d be really interesting to see these analyses with the Series S as well since it has such a small body
Finally. Ty for your hardwork.
Thank you. I'd would be interesting to see a similar video for the Series S to see how it compares. Less power so less heat but also smaller cooling solution.
Yeah, I've yet to ever hear my Series X running. I've muted everything a few times just to see if it really is that quiet.
Its so much better than my ps5. I might have one of the noisier fan types in the ps5 but there’s no comparing them, the ps5 is way way louder
@@Delphiki78 Not too different from the Xbox One S vs PS4 then...
Not that the PS4 was loud or anything, but it definitely wasn't near silent like the One S was.
And that's after replacing the awful stock/dried thermal paste on the PS4, whereas the One S ran quiet without having to disassemble it. Before changing the paste on the PS4 I genuinely had to speak up a bit if it was playing a game because of the sheer noise. They did learn their lesson on that and massively overcompensated by using liquid metal on the PS5.
Do you actually have games to play on it to hear it running? I'm joking lol but seriously it is quiet my friend has one
They're both really quiet for me. Certainly not noticeable when I'm playing a game or something. I love the simplicity of the Series X design, though. Other than potential dust issues, it seems very elegant and very effective.

I love my Microsoft Xbox Series X. And my AMD Ryzen 5600X. And my EVGA Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti. They all serve their purpose. Modern Gaming Tech is AWESOME.
Kind of pointless you'd own a pc AND an xbox, especially considering the fact that both perform nearly the same.
@@santhoshsridhar5887 even more true considering that the 3060 ti has basically the same horse power as the series x
@@gustavobrunelli7162 In rasterization, nearly the same but not in raytracing tho. But still, there is no point owning both of them. PC/PS5 has always been the best combo with PS5/series S coming second if you want to dip your feet into gamepass but want to spend less money and PS5/XSX coming third as both perform nearly the same and there is little reason to buy both unless you want the best experience for both console's exclusives.
@@santhoshsridhar5887 In the current situation, o would say that PS5 + Series X is the best combo, I would not mind not having a gaming PC, It's just too expansive for what it offers in terms of gaming, and with the new Apple M1 chip, you really need to have a good reason to buy a windows machine for normal or professional use.
Just my personal opinion.
@@gustavobrunelli7162 Apple M1 chip's gpu at its best is as good as a 1650, which was already a budget GPU relased 2 years ago. It's impressive for an integrated gpu, but it is not good for gaming also because of the api it uses as apple does not allow vulkan or open gl. Even for professional use, it's good if you only want the apple suite of apps and don't use bootcamp(which many mac users do use).
2) You don't necessarily need to make a pc matching the series X just to get a good experience. Even a 1660ti or a 2060 is good enough. And tbh, if you can find pc components at their normal prices rn(which is extremely hard but not impossible), you can get a pc better than the series X without breaking the bank. For example
Rtx 3060: Nearly identical to the XSX. 320$
Ryzen 5 3600: also as good as the xsx's cpu, just has 2 lesser cores, 200$
1TB SSD: 100$
16gb ram stick: 80$
650W psu: 60$
Pc case: 50$
Total: 810$.
Now, I could have skimped on a lot of things to make this cheaper. The case could've been cheaper. I could definitely have bought a normal hdd instead of an SSD. And let's be honest, a 3060 can easily kill these new consoles if we're talking about raytracing(see any digital foundry video released rn) and 120hz gaming and eSports games(look at GN's ps5 video for 120hz gaming where the ps5 barely is comparable to a 1080 in most games). And we did not even factor in dlss which completely obliterates the new consoles(unless MS brings out something like direct ML). And yes, you can do a lot more on a PC than a console. Yes, xbox can run retroarch, which is a welcome surprise but it is still a far cry from the amount of stuff a pc can emulate, be it switch or Wii u games, to the PS3. And unlike xbox's homebrew scene, pc emulators will always receive way more support.
Also, you can't code, or make games or edit on an xbox or a ps5.

Oh here we damn go
It's nice to see that Microsoft seems to have designed a relativelty quiet and cool running console here. I know that people who care about exclusives will be more excited by the PS5 but for me this seems like a much better deal when you factor in that it is able to emulate previous consoles where the PS5 is not. For me, exclusives are rare enough that it doesn't really matter too much and I am willing to wait for those games either to be ported over or to be able to emulate them.
You buy next gen to play next gen. BC is still by and large, a non issue with 360/ps3 and prior gens.
@@AnImperfectSoul Will matter to the stream crowd and those who haven't been keeping up with he generations, but you are right. Nostalgia may kick in every now and again, but a non issue
@@River_Miles I think the cooler is the one who's gonna be able to play elder scrolls 6. Hope it will be launched on both, but if it doesn't, it's a huge hit for the one who's not having it

I wonder if they clogged up those holes because the air was getting pulled in from too high up the tower and not cooling some parts properly.
If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them. It seems like a very deliberate design choice with no obvious explanation.
Xbox use negative air pressure you need less intake and more exhaust to make it work properly
Thr fan create a low pressure zone and air will enter the console because the exterior pressure is more than the inside of the console
@@legros731 I mean you're technically not wrong, but this still doesn't give any indication as to why they would block the holes on the side.
They could put holes all over the case and it would still be a negative pressure system as the only fan is set to exhaust.

Ok so the negatives are just that it has negative air pressure and no dust filters. That’s pretty good. Runs quieter than the ps5. Which was a given as bigger fans make less noise. Wonder tho how loud the disc drives are compared with each other.
You cannot linearly compare the temperature between these two pieces as the components are different and the measurement locations are, by nature of the PCB being a different layout, also different. I like the Xbox Series X general simple design and it could easily be modded by someone who knows what they are doing to improve the air flow and add some magnetic dust filters, if you would like, it's obviously not necessary.
You need to increase the surface area of intake to add filters so that the air is not too restricted. Just slapping on filters will cause the device to run hot.

Damn this is actually a pretty good idea. A numbskull like me would probably just think that it is new if I didn't pay much attention.
It was always clear to me that the xboxs design was way more practical looking compared to the ps5s tryhard looking design, and although I've always been a PS fanboy and Xbox hater this test has convinced me to grab an Xbox (whenever I can find one).
My PC is down and considering the current market it doesn't make sense to rebuild at this time especially when compared to the console prices and how powerful they are.
Until you realize every Xbox game is on PC
@@earthinthecomments4944 a video card costs more than an xbox right now ...
I had mine vertically oriented on a shelf originally, and the PS5 thermals video scared me into moving it to my desk back in November (obviously different consoles, but served as a good reminder). I had Microsoft's minimum recommended vertical clearance, but knowing that there's only one exhausting fan at the top, it seemed like good peace-of-mind to move it to an open air area. Glad to see the overall thermal performance for it is fine, but in agreeance with the findings, more openings and some filters would be great.
I'm really glad you me tioned how there's irregularities in the backplate edge and the Casewall I have a very slight one not really noticible unless your looking dead on at the back but shining a light and you see there's a big enough gap for air I was worried but I guess that's sop.
I guess if I skin it I'll have to use some kinda sealer.
I was thinking bout using just a tiny bit of rubber cement.
