Thanks! Really informative. Just had to get rid of my father’s and my Lamiglas rods from the early 1960s. Just didn’t have a place to keep them anymore. Guides were busted up anyway.
Bill, Thanks for the info on rods.. I use the gsb’s , Kennedy Fisher and the century stealth.. all great rods. It’s nice to see Rosie involved she did a great job.
I'm a big fan of Century rods I also fish the 10 foot stealth and it's without question my favorite rod it can do it all I also have a slingshot 1145 for the spring and an 11' 3" surf machine for heavy surf. Great video Bill I'm a huge fan keep them coming.
Hey man, im thinking about getting into light surf fishing and Century rod is what im looking at. What model do you suggest for throwing pencil popper, cork and jigs.
Great honest video. Nobody ever talks about how a rod actually fishes. What's the use of a rod that can cast to Ireland without sensitivity or the flexibility to land a good fish?
Very enlightening the taping on the reel means you can get a good blank put some guides and some cork tape and you have yourself a primitive but effective custom rod.
In the UK we have a heavy surf bass rod for sea bass 10 foot 1-4 ounce 30lbs or 20lbs. One of the tackle companies say these rod were designed for UK fishing. To be honest the spec our uk sea bass rod is excellent for striper bass
Thanks for sharing you knowledge. I am newbie to surf fishing but I am interested in joining. This year was my first year and I caught a 25incher which I released safely. It was fun though. Great work. Love the channel!!
When it comes to striper fishing two names come to the forefront and Bill Wetzel and John Skinner, sure there are plenty of Striper legends but the two I mentioned are masters.
Great info on the rods Bill. Think Rosie is the better camera girl, seemed like you were shaking more. Great job to both of you. Wondering if you can do a casting technique video for high winds, Happy Holidays
good video Wetzel!! i too like COF (cone of flight) guide layout over NGC (new guide concept). just like the feel better. one rod i was "addicted" to was the lami gsb 120 1L. that rod worked for me. i just cut one down and made it into a 9'er (12" off the butt). how 'bout some videos with you and Rosie next year?!?
I have fished the ODM's and they are very good rods. However I prefer the lamiglas for the fishing I do. I will say this. Lots of new rod companies have come out in recent years with some great rods. As of this video I have not found anything that I like better than my ORGINAL GSB's , however I am open to new technology, and could completely change my mind tomorrow.
Guess it depends on the rod you are using. All my lami Gsb have traditional layouts. I prefer less guides over concept layouts. Never been a problem with knots.
@@BillWetzel thanks Bill, I've been plugging for close to 40 years. I'm so use to mono that I'm still having a hard time getting used to it. Thanks for your reply. Tight lines!
@@BillWetzel I had mine for 3 years and I can plug really well with it. I Landed some big blue fish with no problem. My friend bought a st croix legend for $600 plus tax and the top guide already broke 3 times. Not to mention that rod is super stiff.
@@maikp5505 Breaking of the tip or a guide doesn't mean much.. 100 percent user error when it happens. Basically you want a rod that is going to give you 100 percent based on your needs. SOme like a stiff fast action rod, and some like slow rod. The rod you use is probably not the rod I would use and visa versa.
@@BillWetzel Mostly Ugly Stik from 9-15’ depending on purpose. Most guys fish 9-11’ from the beach when going for Ling Cod or rock fish and 7’ for surf perch. Down South Penn rods are popular. Very few custom rods as the hard core surf community is pretty small. Allot of trout rods used for perch. Lightweight seems to be the latest thing. I use my 15’ to get out to the fringes of the kelp beds. Our stripers are not nearly as heavy as yours with 7-9 pounds being average.
Surf rods should all have cork tape, 5 guide max set ups and bend through the majority of the blank....nothing else. I wish Lamiglas would listen to us and bring back the classics we loved. The new stuff is too fast, nearly brittle, and too many guides
Spot on ! I don’t get these new wraps that are made for her pleasure with all the textures dimples and “wire” grips. Talk about uncomfortable and annoying (too me anyways). Good ol fashion cork wraps even the smooth shrink wrap are so much better.
I have taken many 40 plus fish. I had a fish that was probably over 50 but I did not have a scale so I can not say legitamelty it was 50 plus. I have many non fiction stories I could tell about the fish I have lost to the rocks of Montauk. I remember almost all the true beasts lost. good discussion for the surf rats ball!!
If Lamiglas made a 12 to 13 footer with a top third soft enough to cast 1.5 to 2.0 ounce jerkbaits and had a powerful enough butt strength for big fish, I would immediately pay top dollar for it. Until then I will buy Diawa. Even a Euro carp rod is better than these stubby clubs for modern jerkbaits.
Love how you involve your daughter! She is going to be a wealth of knowledge if she decides to carry your torch!
Great video Bill! Very informative! And love how you get Rosie involved.
Much appreciated good sir & rosie for the assistance.

Hiya Bill. Great job! Always something new to learn. Thanks for the tips and great job by your daughter also. See you soon.

GSB and FSC MTK Marauder for me.

Would you consider shark fishing from the beach next season and showing us?
I am pretty much a bass head..
How do you feel about the five guide layout when using braid. Does it make a difference with wind knots?

Best fresh water lake on the island IMO
Take care of that GSB1321M,,,, appears it is not available any more....🤔
What a legend!
Great video. What glue did you use to glue your 2 piece?
My rod builder Loe Carusso did it. Don’t know what glue he used.
Thank you for sharing
Try testing the zenaq rods from japan
Bill!! What glue did they use for the rod? I've got multiple two piece rods I'd love to make a one piece
I have no idea. My builder is Lou Caruso.
Bill any thoughts on John skinners dark matter surf rod
Never used it
@@BillWetzel I was a gsb 10 medium
Do you fish westhampton beach?
rarely.. but sometimes

Have you ever used a tsunami elite ?
Yes -- They are Ok, especially for the money.

Which Carbon surf rod was that the medium or medium heavy?
Quite a bit different from what is used in Northern California surf. Very interesting though.
