I had a KTM 950 Adv for two years in the mid-00s. No engine problems, whatsoever. Superb bike. I ride a Duke 390 now. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. The 950/990 engine was the one.
I normally love your videos. I’ve “liked” this one, but feel it was a vacuous experience. No detail at all in the strip down, then rebuild abandoned because you get gifted a new engine. A bit pointless as a video, in my opinion.
How do you get the timing chain back on the camshaft sprocket??? There’s like no clearance for the chain to get around the camshaft sprocket on my LC8. It was a fight to get the thing off in the first place, and impossible to get it back on.
I was hoping for a few insights to the 950/990 especially since you had the experts there. My 990 SDR has been off the road for 3 years now, while I chase down a Fi gremlin and continue to replace parts. If only I had the same access you have (I'm in the Middle East), I'm very jealous. Good luck with the rebuild, people loves these bikes because they are so raw and fun.
Disappointed really. Wanted to see the in and outs of building the engine . Not just stick in a new one. . Missed opportunity for youtube . But I understand why you did it .
The balance shaft and it's gears is the most difficult thing about this engine, would have been cool to see how the real deal tackles it. The transmission is just like any other engine.

When I saw Chris sitting next to that glorious blue frame in the End of Year Show, I hoped that a KTM update wouldn't be far behind and this didn't disappoint. Thanks for continuing to produce these videos and for providing such entertaining diversions. By the way, will you need a new ECU to match the 990 or can you just reflash the original?
Why was that engine in such bad shape, it looks like it was eaten by birds. What causes that? I'm looking to buy a 950 adv, should I consider that a model problem or? Kinda scared me
@@chrisnorthover7582 hello Chris, before i contact ktm can you help? My 05model 950adv [had from new] has an "fatal" engine prob,[wont bore u with details] but Q. can i use a 990 engine with my carbs? what mods do i need? new ecu or remapped original?, I cannot source a decent low mileage engine obviously..you know !! but 990's are out there...I appreciate any advice/info..shes been sat in my barn for a while now, and i cannot bring myself to part her, I saw your vids and wasn't aware the 990-being fuel injected was even an option..thanks in advance if you can respomd. @@myjurisdictionallrightsres4901 Hey Kev, good news - it was a pretty simple conversion, the only mechanical part I had to change on the 990 engine was the ignition pickup which I simply swapped out for the 950 one. From memory everything else was a straight swap over. The only difference might be that I deleted the neutral switch and made my own loom so you might find a couple of sensors etc on the 990 that are either redundant or need the plugs changing on.
@@chrisnorthover7582 Thats cheered me up no end..I really appreciate the reply, I forgot to ask, was the 990 engine an adventure? Those lc8 engines are holding up really well if you look after the known issues. They're really solid as far as KTM engines go. My 990 is currently at 80.000k and still running fine
Ok so You start project with bike that's worth £3500 than You put tons of work in it to make frame and the rest of the chassis right. and than You put a £4000+ engine in it (plus labour to take it apart etc.). At the end You will be spending well over £10k to have bike that is worth £5000 as no one will pay more for a old 950 that has been messed around with. Fairplay on the new engine! Take it while you can get it 😁
Any chance I can have the leftover internals from the 950 for my SM??
Is the 990 engine a straight swap or are there any minor modifications needed?
Wonder if the 1290 engine would work in this frame?
Nobody is talking about the sick blue frame? Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

So, will the 990 run on carbs, or FI?
Thanks, KTM! 👍
Sweet! that bike will last donkeys years now!! enjoy!
can i have the 950 to rebuild over lockdown ????? can got in my 950SM ;)

you're going to have to sort out the FI now

Where can I find the lc8 950 engine for sale?
Really enjoying this series but keen to see the rest of the project finished... is the rest of the build coming soon?
I hope they put the old engine to good use
I think the tatty grubby engine looks better.
Of course I would have accepted the brand new one if I had been in your shoes, though.
But how is the Indian FTR doing??
Cool to see this. I am an LC8 990 owner (2011 SMT). Maby i can learn something from it😏

Cool project, can't wait to see it finished and in action. Are you changing the electrics for 990 too, or keeping the 950?
Keeping 950 with the carbs too. Got a few repairs to make on the loom mind 😂

A little bit more of a in depth look would have been great! Since you don't really see the internals of a 950/990 lc8 much on UA-cam.

surprised to learn the internals of an engine are still perfect even after all the miles and abuse, yet the outside of the engine is dirty and dinged

If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem.
