Listen sister, who cares what others think. I took up knitting at age 65 and now 68 be cause it wasn't encouraged. Now stand back. You are so talented, so creative why wouldn't your poetry be just as creative. Write it. Write a book if you want. Go fir it. Do it for you, not what the dried, up dusty folks think!
Love your podcast!! I am an academic who lives in an ivory tower and trust me there are a LOT of pompous @ss hats residing there!! I am of the mindset (and the older I get the more I think this way) that I don't give a rat's @ss what others think and feel everyone should be able to do what brings them joy ♥ And I am hoping to get one your bags for myself for an early birthday gift to myself!
So many thoughts to share and I'm only halfway through your episode. First off, you're not giving yourself enough credit for your voice. There are 14.9K people who have validated your voice for you and plenty more (I'm sure) who thoroughly enjoy your thoughts and words. You are a deep thinking, witty being who is so loved and appreciated. Don't let any societal, historical, or personal standards ruin that!! I would dare to say that you have MORE of an ability to think deeply about things because you find a way to connect different aspects of life in ways that these (your words) "intellectual" people haven't taken the time to. Thank you for sharing your heart here and giving us that insight into your view on this and how you're allowing yourself to challenge that view. Next... SUMO. Yes, please!! I'm obsessed with your print. I need it on a bag immediately!!!
I never thought I had the patience to understand poetry, but lately I’m satisfied getting whatever I do get from a brief reading of a poem. Write if you want to write, and do crafts just to enjoy them. It’s a way to recharge your creativity. Your shawl is gorgeous and your bunny is so cute! I got a laugh at the moment where it looked like Gus was doing the podcast! I always look forward to your podcasts, and enjoy all your shenanigans! ❤
I have so many thoughts and feeling on whether I'm "worthy" of being part of the "writing community" or "advocacy community" despite working in both journalism and politics in the past. As a SAHM for 15 years I totally relate to the feeling of not being needed by kids in the same way as they get older. One of the benefits of getting older is the realization that I will only know if I can contribute something if I show up and try and if it doesn't work out there are other ways to fulfill the need/desire to help and use our skills/passions. Tomorrow I am planning on going to my state legislature to share my views on some proposed legislation. I guess I"m trying to figure out the next chapters of my life since it doesn't revolve around my kids as much anymore.
I starting painting in 2015. I love it so much. Keep doing what makes you happy. And, about your wood blocks, you should persevere. After you have carved 1000 of them, they will look pretty good. Picasso said, "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working."
I thought I was a person who just didn’t like poetry, and at 50 I discovered Mary Oliver. She speaks from the depths of my soul. I used to teach science and I would tell the kids “If you don’t like science, you just haven’t found the right science for you yet.” Apparently, that applies to everything!
I'm from Westfield, IN and graduated 1978. So yes,I am ancient, but thought I was going to take the world by storm as a writer, while of course teaching at a college. My husband, who was a townie, from Westfield and I picked out when we were in the 4th grade, hadn't had classes together until then, bought me a Writer's Market 1978 edition. It is still on my living room bookshelf. The idea that someone believed in me then and would totally still support me if I wanted to try is important. Also I used to teach quilting classes and Yoko is one of my favorite designers. I did all of the hand work, including the micro minis, like a 2.5 inch, 16 split point compass star. Unfortunately I can no longer see to use those tiny needles. But I have also been crocheting since I was 9 so now I teach crochet classes at my LYS. Creativity will find a way of expression if we don't give up.
Thank you for being raw and honest. We often limit ourselves in what we believe we can do/offer/contribute but we would never put those limitations upon anyone else. If you have the words or images inside yourself, let them out and enjoy them. Play with them, examine them, move them around but do it because it makes you happy or feeds something inside yourself. I talked to my kids after listening to a song called "Till you can't" that they needed to not waste a precious moment of their life, but try and experience it all, reach out others, share their hearts whether that be through words, images, song or something else. Please also don't just justify it for a business. You are deserving of the experience just for pure exploration and enjoyment. I wish I had learned that sooner in my life.
something about your post today inspired me to reach out to you and tell you about an artist and printmaker that I love...She had bright red hair and lived in Wellfleet, Mass one town over from where i now live...some of her images of her time on Cape Cod are so stunning... and I think you would really like them. Her name is Clare Leighton 1898-1989/ I also have always loved woodblock prints! As we all get older and have less" responsibility", we can let our creative forces come to the fore! I love that you are interested in apples and all the antique varieties, which we share, and of course spinning and knitting... everyone has their innate gifts, don't ever think you are" less than", your friend Karen
Whenever I try to stretch out of my comfort zone, and things don’t work out like I imagined them, I am plagued by the “who do you think you are ?”voices. They are diabolical! It’s hard to ignore them, and it’s actually easier to give in to them, because, in my head, who DO I think I am? Then I put the shit down, come back later and try again. Eventually I’m doing it - playing a new (hard) piece of music, crocheting a nutzy new pattern with 11 new to me stitches, add more weight to the bench press efforts, or, to be truthful, trying to lose weight. Ignore the voices and do what you want. Worst case scenario is that you aren’t cut out for poetry. But at least you’ll know. Or you’ll be one more step closer than the last time you tried. You are a maestra in the making AmyBeth!🎉❤
Haha last year I was reading Murder on the Orient Express and that's when I realized that pipe cleaners were originally for cleaning pipes and not just a craft supply! It had literally never occurred to me before that!
Once again a wonderful podcast! Love the rabbit, I have made 2 frogs, bought the chicken pattern and have the rabbit pattern too, so cute! Very addicting. Getting emotional online, is OK , also accepting that you are worthy, you are not alone, and it's good for others to know they too are not alone. I really love that S.W. pattern, and your colors are beautiful! Take care, smile and write something! :)
🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡 Thank you for your words & thoughts. Just so ya know, there have been many times when you do a more formal close to your video, you speak in a way that is both meaningful and sounds like poetry to me. Being on my bike is very much my happy place and is my main mode of for commuting, “naturing” and most errands. I’m much safer on my bike than on my feet 😂. Gravel / adventure style bikes are my jam. Hills are always more noticeable on a bike!
The gravel/adventuring bikes are so very tempting! I don’t have and to do any single track riding, but a slightly more rustic trail and the prospect of Bikepacking!
@@fatsquirrelfibers I use mine for everything! She is great for city riding, pleasure road riding and we go on a lot of backroads / gravel roads / trails that aren’t too technical. She has studded tires on now so I can continue to ride in the winter even when it’s icy or a light dusting of snow. It has been a long process for me to rediscover joyful movement that isn’t punishing myself or trying to change my body and, for me, that’s being on my bike. She is a dear companion- sounds hokey but it’s true & yes, I talk to her a lot but only sometimes out loud 😊. She was an investment but I use her for so much she has been worth every penny and more. Many cyclists believe in having multiple bikes (my husband!!!) but I love having just one. We have fallen in love with bike touring but have kept to ones (Wilderness Scotland) where our bags are transported and we stay in inns. They are “fancy” for us but have allowed us to dip our toes into travelling by bike and we are in love with it! I’m hoping to eventually talk my husband in doing on our own but we most likely will still stay in inns ☺️.
Couple of years back I started writing poetry and hadn't done it since I was a child. I wrote 2 poems and entered them Into an international competition. I didn't hear anything back but it was great to do something bold, and think I was a contender.why not.
lovely again of course. I think you should come to New Zealand for a coffee. So much nodding in this episode, about writing and poetry. I always felt that there was some hidden something I didn't get. My entry point was to just enjoy the sound of the words. We can all get different things from poetry. Glad you are doing the printing stuff. Yes, do what feels your soul. I think I will buy the little knitted animal patterns, you are a total enabler. Have a lovely week. Catherine
Amy Beth, you are a gem of a human being. I hope you fulfill your dreams of writing and block printing and anything else you want to do. Pretty sure I would love anything you wrote. Also, whenever you put the sumo print in your shop (as is, on a bag, etc) I’m there! 👏😍
I love visiting with you, your creative path of conversation would make for an enjoyable read on any topic. The charming part of reading "good" poetry is the author didn't necessarily think at the time they were writing something that would appeal to anyone centuries down the line. Someday you may be the voice of expression of our time.
Thank you for being so brave to share your thoughts on art creation, writing, and poetry. I was inspired to do some deep thining about my own creating. Please know you are appreciated.
AmyBeth, you are brilliant, talented and so very articulate. Please don't ever think of yourself as less. Thank you for sharing and being so vulnerability. I have always felt the same about poetry and writing. I have never felt I was a strong writer and as far as poetry - I appreciate it but my speed is more on the lines of haiku. You are wonderful, A blazing ray of sunshine, Worthy of it all!
I have to just say it - you are one of the most intellectual people I know. And I work at a top 25 university. Please do what brings you joy. You bring so much to the world, Amybeth! Thankful our paths have crossed.
As I age, and with the explosion of social media, etc., I am able to see and understand better that there are so many ways of doing "things"--not just the (maybe academic-focused?) ways I was used to. So, I get what you are saying.
It’s funny how we see ourselves vs how others see us. One of the reasons I like you so much is your intellectuality. You think about so many things, and then go on to learn about a lot of them in some way. (Of the things we know about, of course 😊). For me, intellectuality is wondering/pondering on things, but then following up with learning/experimentation until you feel you’re satisfied.
I was so happy to see your podcast come up! I had to wait until I got home from work to watch. You should absolutely do the crafts that make you happy just for your own enjoyment!!! Your shawl is beautiful!. Thanks again and I can't wait to see you again.
I've missed you so much (all my fault)! I have been in a knitting slump for a while and also stopped listening to knitting podcasts. I am so glad to be at it again, your greeting always makes me instantly happier than I was before. Thank you for bringing good energy into my life.
I have the bunny pattern as well and may or may not ever try knitting it with all the fiddlyness. That did not stop me for one second from looking at ALL her adorable patterns on Ravelry. I had to sit on my hands to keep from buying most of them! Seeing you knitting her has made my day!
Your podcast is always great and I love spending time with you. I resonated so much when you had your poignant moment about poetry - I totally get it. I felt my eyes filling up - so thanks for that😂😂 I have felt, frequently, certain things are not ‘for’ people like me…now that I have been through several health crises and had to suddenly have an emergency stoma in the summer, I feel differently!! Go for it! 😊
You aren’t alone, Amy Beth. I’m also in this stage of life, finding that the creative stuff I always thought “wasn’t in me” is, in fact, mine to damn well roll around in and do what I want with! There is something about this phase of life, about realizing so much that my own very practical public health and nursing career isn’t actually who I am, it’s a part of what I did, for whatever reason, in that time of my life. But my therapy has been so helpful in pulling up all those childhood reasons I believe things about myself, and the absolutely choose to do whatever I want now. Also still in progress, I still believe those things about myself sometimes. It’s such hard but good work to do, which makes you want to jump for joy and also crawl under the covers at.the.same.time. Mental health is bonkers. I’m in Indy too, and have a new podcast on knitting here too, and also am seeing so many other podcasters talking about this too. This seems to be the time that so many of us are taking stock of what we actually want to do and be, coming out of the pandemic, not just going back to what and who we were. You’re not alone, anyway. Just wanted to share.
@@fatsquirrelfibers would absolutely love to. Sent you a DM or PM or whatever the cool kids call it on the IG. Because I don't know where else to do it😂 but lemme know if there is a better way.
Very much with you on the writing thing. Finally having the brain space and potentially the time, to do those things. Placing limitations on yourself really doesn't require active thought, we seem to be wired that way by external influences. Enough people likely do it for you, so why make it easy for them? At least that is the approach I am trying to take, particularly as a lady of a certain age. ;-) Adoring the screen printing!
Thank you! Yes, we are all valid and have something to say and just because we feel that about ourselves, as well as others, doesn't make us egotistical or arrogant. It makes us human. It shows that we have purpose. Some of us may not have quite landed on our purpose entirely yet (thinking of the young folks primarily, LOL) We also don't always "see" the impact of our words &/or actions until much later. That tricks us into thinking what we have to say isn't as important as what someone else says. Those thoughts are simply not to be trusted. Not to say that we have to go around shooting our mouths off about everything. But we do need to KNOW that we have every right to feel that we have important things to say or make (speaking through our art) and send that out to the universe. Also, not everything has to be "deep" to have impact. Your episodes almost always trigger artsy pondering, which I miss when daily life is just taking the lead. Thank you for that.
Poetry and my life lessons - places where it is okay to allow your poems to meet the public: College creative writing class - perfectly suitable; memory pamphlets for your father and grandmother - okay because it would be in REALLY poor taste for anyone to tell you that they are bad; High School Newspaper - DANGER WILL ROBINSON… Do NOT do this, save your self the pain and humiliation. 🤣 🤣 Also, I am also knitting the Bunny as well - the reason - THOSE SHOES…. My ears came out chonky as well.
We all have something valid to say. What I think about is anthropologist today, READ PEOPLES PERSONAL JOURNALS for insight. They find them to be the most valuable document. And that's not even like world history or a story for the ages. Yet it is.
Thanks Amy-Beth for another great podcast. I have to agree with you that when I a new craft I feel like it should be part of my business as doing it is wasting my time (well not actually) but it feels like I should be putting that time into my business instead of a hobby just for me. I hope that makes sense! Thanks again.
The bun is sooooo cute! She does look a little like a mouse, but will prob look more like a bunny when you’re done. And yes, you are worthy of writing and have the right to be heard and read. We all are ❤
You are so talented and beautiful! You may do ANYTHING you want to do, and you qualify for EVERYTHING, so have at it! The world is your smorgasbord, I hope to read some of your poems one day😊
I recently discovered Rupi Kaur. She is a poet who performs her poetry live. She self published her first book of poetry because people told her that her work would never be published. She is now touring her third book of poetry. Write what you feel. I would love to read it.
I think of you as an intellectual. I find all of the side topics that you dive down to be so well thought out and well spoken. You are a deserving and wonderful human and you are more than enough. Speaking of poetry though. I feel like since you enjoy poems about nature that you may enjoy some of Gerard manly Hopkins poems. My moms favorite is the windhover.
I also find I sit on both sides of the poetry debate... making things (engaging in a craft) is for everyone, but not everyone will be a Great _____. Like, I do some of the same things Bookhou does but it's not as good. I can write a poem, but I'm no Ross Gay. I think the real issue is learning to do things you enjoy and not expecting to be a genius at everything. It's okay to be just okay.
Such a fun and still thoughtful podcast. Write whatever you feel. Thank you for sharing all the things. What is the name of the Stephen West shawl you were wearing? I looked a few podcasts back but didn’t see a No purl shawl.
I love the colors of your shawl. If you were to write, would you write poetry or another genre? I am confident that you can do anything you put your mind to. I, too, am wanting to get a bike. I think I will get an e-bike (need all the help I can get lol).
Socks look lovely. I did screen printing in college. I still have the t shirt I made (doesn’t fit- and I don’t need it, but I’m so proud of it) Bicycle wise- I love the Electra/trek bikes. Super fun step in bikes in fun colors.
@@fatsquirrelfibers oh and I forgot to say I began to love poetry while homeschooling my now adult kids. Their were required to memorize and recite one poem every month. They both still love poetry and will buy their own poetry books now. I recently fell in love with Mary Oliver. I found her by watching the YT channel Girl in the woods (she is pretty cool) she had a series of 28 day fire challenge. 🤟🏽
Am I the only one who wondered for the longest time why did Amy-Beth screen print an orange ballsack... I mean more power to you, but am I missing something here🤔 until I realized it was a sumo and it suddenly made all the sense in the world😂😅
Writers don't just become *Writers* overnight. I teach writing, and in order to "become a writer," you have to write. A lot. And share it. Even when you don't want to or feel like it's not worthy of eyes yet. All those poets, I'll bet, revise their poems multiple many many times. It's like knitting. You don't just make a fingering weight sweater with cables and lace right off the bat. You practice. Also, I think all writing/genres are for everyone.
Your insights and observations make your podcast so unique and speak to us - wouldn’t this be the same in the written word? Critiques are all subjective and so your writing would be loved by the those who you contact with. In the UK we have Micheal Rosen as a non poet poet , or Pam Ayers, as more ‘peoples’,poets - out lasted any critics in the papers!! Do it for you, get it out if your brain!

Speaking for myself, I love your show here just the way you choose to do it now! Whatever you do is perfect! Thanks! 💕
I love your love afair with the sumo orange!
Go for it! 😊
Love your screen prints they all look good to me just a bit different to the finish!
We should do an Indy meetup! Or at least a coffee!
@@fatsquirrelfibers would absolutely love to. Sent you a DM or PM or whatever the cool kids call it on the IG. Because I don't know where else to do it😂 but lemme know if there is a better way.
I love your frog and toad bag! I think you did a pretty good job.
I love the printing!! I'd love to try it but I can't start a new craft. maybe when my kids are older.
Those frog and toad screen prints are too cute!!
Love what you do love who you are love the reality you bring with youn
It would help if I could spell
I like the socks! Very focused on socks at the moment 😁
i love your toad and frog print
You have reached the age of wisdom.
Thank you for the chunky ear commisery❤
We all have something valid to say. What I think about is anthropologist today, READ PEOPLES PERSONAL JOURNALS for insight. They find them to be the most valuable document. And that's not even like world history or a story for the ages. Yet it is.
How about a partially peeled sumo? Thank you for introducing me to them last year!
Dotpebbles gives directions for the coat!?! ok I need to reread the pattern. (I picked up her chicken and bee pattern)
Love your podcast. Glad to know Mass Ave knit shop is still there. Love the little animals 😊
❤❤❤
The bun is sooooo cute! She does look a little like a mouse, but will prob look more like a bunny when you’re done. And yes, you are worthy of writing and have the right to be heard and read. We all are ❤
You are so talented and beautiful! You may do ANYTHING you want to do, and you qualify for EVERYTHING, so have at it! The world is your smorgasbord, I hope to read some of your poems one day😊
You're the best!
I recently discovered Rupi Kaur. She is a poet who performs her poetry live. She self published her first book of poetry because people told her that her work would never be published. She is now touring her third book of poetry. Write what you feel. I would love to read it.
Bike! Check out the Gazelle Tour Populair. I LOVE mine. So gorgeous, too.
Oh and you might like Simon Armitage , a previous poet laureate, radio program on bbc ‘ in the shed’ - very approachable listening I think you’ll like
I think of you as an intellectual.
Thank you for the lovely compliment and the recommendation❤
I also find I sit on both sides of the poetry debate... making things (engaging in a craft) is for everyone, but not everyone will be a Great _____. Like, I do some of the same things Bookhou does but it's not as good. I can write a poem, but I'm no Ross Gay. I think the real issue is learning to do things you enjoy and not expecting to be a genius at everything. It's okay to be just okay.
I are a sumo mandarin for the first time. Yummy! Also, my Meijer’s in Evansville carries Marmite. I bought some recently.
Such a fun and still thoughtful podcast. Write whatever you feel. Thank you for sharing all the things. What is the name of the Stephen West shawl you were wearing? I looked a few podcasts back but didn’t see a No purl shawl.
Oh! It has just come to me. It is called the Purlbreak. Apologies!
❤
I love the colors of your shawl. If you were to write, would you write poetry or another genre? I am confident that you can do anything you put your mind to. I, too, am wanting to get a bike. I think I will get an e-bike (need all the help I can get lol).
E-bikes are so exciting!
Socks look lovely. I did screen printing in college. I still have the t shirt I made (doesn’t fit- and I don’t need it, but I’m so proud of it)
Bicycle wise- I love the Electra/trek bikes. Super fun step in bikes in fun colors.
Electra has been high on my list. Trek is new to me, but I am liking what I see. Thank you for the recommendation❤
Thank you, Katie❤
🧡
❤️❤️
Wouldn’t it be cool to write a little poem and screen print it?
I don’t know, but I have been thinking about it quite a lot. Maybe if we think it’s cool, it’s cool?!
🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
❤️🤗
I want to read your writing.
Where do you sell bags? I looked on etsy.
I sell them at fatsquirrelfibers.com. You can find the link in the squirrel Support link in each shows drop down.
Thank you for your interest!
Thank you so much❤
gah frog😫🥰
