Last year I was literally dying. I had lost roughly 40 lbs unexplained and people in my little circle told me how great I looked! My circle became smaller. I appreciate this conversation so much!
Thank you for discussing people talking about other people's bodies. We need to do better as a society. I have a friend on my SAR team who lost weight due to a painful stomach issue and I cringed when the president of our team commented on the change in his appearance.
I love your pants ideas SO MUCH! Bring on the hot coral/sulphurus yellow/sawtooth star print quilted barrel legs! I'm also loving a barrel leg trouser these days. They are so comfy. I wish I loved sewing, I can see but I don't want to. Perhaps some quilted barrel leg pants can convince me to sew again :)
OMGoodness, there were so many moments in this episode where I wanted to "Thumbs Up" and I rediscovered that I already had! Thank you, thank you for your insight!
Articulate in a wonderfully unique way. Splendid. Fabulous. Hilarious. Kind. Sweet. Funny. Your podcasts always make me feel so good. Thank you for making my day.
Thank you for your chat on compliments. I have been told I looked great while struggling with an eating disorder. My friend’s husband left her for another woman, she couldn’t eat, and was told she looked better than ever. Well intended people can still do harm. On a lighter note, don’t drink fuzzy water in my house. Probably means my cat has dipped her paw in it. 😸
We can all do each other a solid by paying more attention to things we say without thinking about them. And the quilted pants - I'm there with a maybe because that silk lining stuff sounds amazing. I'll wait to see yours first!
I am overwhelmed with emotion listening to your voice about body compliments. Everytime someone compliments my body changes, I remember, I have cancer, and I am not well.
Oh my goodness, please say it louder for the ones in the back! You approached the conversation of bodies and change so *chefs kiss* and I am so grateful to have listened to it ❤ I went through a massive body change (smaller) and the number of compliments I received confused me so badly. My body hurt, I was exhausted, lost all my hair and could barely walk 10ft without nearly passing out and people went out of their way to tell me how gorgeous I looked slim. My turning point was an old friend basically ran up to me in the store mid me having a panic attack looking for a place to sit down so I didnt pass out, just to tell me I looked like the bride he always imagined I could be. My body has since changed (bigger) and my hair has grown back, I can run a mile up hill and I feel amazing... Shocker the compliments have completely stopped. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind, thoughtful approach to the subject that is changing bodies. ((Hugs))
Thanks so much for just being your amazing self. I watched the section at the beginning about commenting on someone's size. I was brought up in the same generation as you. I still feel icky when people talk about my weight. My mother in law does it all of the time. To me and my kids. I love her so much and have really tried to have that conversation but she just doesn't understand. I may need to send her a link to this. She is trying to give a compliment, I know, but it feels really odd. Thanks for talking about it. 😊
You are hella good at tackling sticky topics with kindness, empathy, and serious realism. I am editing this to add that there is almost nothing better than wearing weird pants in an elementary school. I wear my run and fly dungarees to work and I am literally the talk of the school in the way that 5-11 year olds admire something.
I love the comments about compliments! We really do have to change our perceptions of people. And I am totally for the quilted “weird” pants. You will bring joy ( actually you already bring joy to lots of people including me!) to lots of other people! Go for it!!!
Thanks for podcast! I find myself always learning , rethinking a subject, life issue and/or knitting. Yes that sentence was disjointed! lol. The bouquet of flowers in the background was nice and I love the wall color of the far room. Great job! Hope you find relief from the allergies!
Ok, in case you would like some encouragement in your journey toward the quilted pants, I was in London with my daughter last month while she was studying abroad there, and we visited lots of trendy thrift stores and MULTIPLE ones had these quilted jumpsuits. Like they were created out of old quilts and were gorgeous. Granted they were between 350 - 700 British pounds each so we didn't get any but I too was thinking a pair of quilted pants would be amazing. If you make some I am certainly going to attempt a pair and we can virtually high five each other!
@@fatsquirrelfibers Oooo where were these lovelies? I searched through all of my photos, hoping I had snapped a photo of the gold & orange quilted jumpsuit because it was fabulous with a few pops of BRIGHT hot pink. Alas, I did not and my daughter is being very selfish and not willing to take a bus to Camden Passage on the other side of London to try to find the shop again (ok to be fair she is there to study and take part in her classes and all, but still... 🤣).
Great conversation about compliments. As a young teen in the 80's We were expected to be super skinny. It created a generation of people with eating disorders including me. I got compliments on how slim I was but then they started to be "you are too thin" "You have lost a lot of weight" etc which just made me not eat even more. Fast forward to my menopause and after I had a total hysterectomy I put on weight and became curvy. Yes I also got comments that I had put on weight. I was trying desperately to like my curves that I had never had and this didn't help. My body is now losing weight again post 2 years, so lets see where that goes.
Thank you for sharing that about compliments. I have been loosing weight due to being ill for a long time - at the point now that I have lost so much weight I can’t wear my wedding rings anymore as they fall off - and people keep complimenting me on how great I look. Inwardly I am crying. I would love to loose weight normally (I’m a comfy sized gal) but this is not a good feeling to be loosing it by being sick for so long and the doctors being stumped as to what to do to help me. I refuse to buy smaller sizes in clothes too so now I am just swimming in the clothes that used to fit fine. Sigh
Love how you put together the colors for your crochet cowl, makes me think of an impressionist painting. 😍 The mochi held double looks lovely. Last, I do hope you make the pants! They sound wonderful!
My ears are ringing! Started watching your podcast while lying down with a magic bag on my left ear (after using the nets pot). Hope my doctor agrees it’s just allergies. Your revolutionary ideas are empowering. This is why we read and talk about what we’re reading. Thanks so much ❤
Neon coral essex linen quilted barrel leg.... tuxedo with green side stripe? Arguably too much nostalgia in one garment but wow would I be here for that
Your house looks so awesome. We usually only see the backdrop, but this was a fun peek inside. I'm smitten with that deep bluey/turquoise and the white pillars dividing the space and the game shelves❤❤. Thanks for giving us a glimpse !

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy your podcasts so much. I love that you’re not afraid to speak your mind, you make me laugh, and it truly feels like I’m just relaxing and listening to a friend, and, I love that you’re worried because you think your old house might be leaking because I think that mine is too. Your vest is wonderful and I can’t seem to find anything like that at any of the thrift stores I go to. I live in Indianapolis, too, and I mainly go to the Goodwills in my area and Thrifty Threads but, if you know some other ones to check out, I’ve loved to know. Good luck with your book club! I joined the long-ago book club at Barnes and Noble to meet new people and to read books I’m not generally drawn to (mostly relatively current books), which is good, but I am a vintage, classics, and cozy mystery girl at heart. I don’t knit, although I’ve tried several times, I quilt and I’m trying to get back into making clothes. I would LOVE to see those pants if you end up making them!! They would be so fun to wear! I have been watching your podcasts for years and I realized that I haven’t subscribed 😳 so I am pushing the subscribe button and bell today. Have a wonderful rest of your weekend and, yes, the slippers are super cute! 💚😉
One thing that I heard that I really loved. The 5 second rule when commenting about someone. If it is something that can't be changed in 5 seconds, don't say it. Such as body type. If it is something that they can change in 5 seconds, such as food on teeth, skirt stuck in underwear go ahead and say it, but don't point it out to embarrass the person.
You bring so much joy! I recently saw a pair of what looked like quilted double gauze pants on the inter webs and I really want them in my life. But seriously, they will not suit me At All, and yet still … We are all a bit demented really. So make the pants. They would be totally brill in your bag fabric too 😊
You’re gonna love the ruler! It’s a game changer. A bit large but fantastic for even strip cutting. Very entertaining show today! You’re the best amy beth!!
Your podcast is so fun! I love hanging out with you (and hope these feelings find their way to you somehow). I found your conversation about nostalgia interesting and will need to check out that podcast. I wish I could fast forward into the future to see you in those quilted barrel-leg pants!
Fantastic podcast, as always! Your crafting is perfection! And now thanks to you I want all the weird pants! I don't dew and I'm quite tall so I need to go on the hunt!
We made slippers like that in sixth grade crafts class, but the toe area was stockinette. I used a green variegated Red Heart yarn. This was 1967 so you can imagine the colors.
Hi, I am 80 years old and I definitely remember the term golden. I didn’t hear chief until I was a grown-up, and whenever that happened. I also remember that flannel was called Alvin as in Alvin shirts, or Alvin pajamas. Another good one is the word ugly. My grandmother use that word, she was a southerner, to describe in the action by one of us that was rude or unjust. And another one was icebox, which I definitely remember. An icebox eventually became a fridge. And, oh yes, cars were called automobiles by everyone. And, when I use the word. And when I use the word kids, my grandmother always reminded me that kids were baby goat. I love how the lexicon has changed over the years. It’s kind of fun.
Ooooh! I hadn’t heard the Albin cloth before, but I love the “ugly” as a descriptor of behavior rather than appearance. My great aunts used it and I should really bring it back into my linguistic landscape!
Awww thank you! I washing up forever on not having something presentable for long shots, but then I just accepted that my house is higgledy piggledy and I rather like it that way.
Eastborne Trousers by Scroop Patterns…I have them in wool plaid, denim with an embroidered floral hem, and linen. I also have a pair of pants I made from a kafta quilt…they are reversible WIDE legged based off a pattern from the late 60’s early ‘70’s. I’m empty nesting…that’s all I can figure cuz…oh let us not forget the wide legged navy blue quilt (fabric inherited from my Nana’s stash) that I plan on applying an appliqué garden. The only reason I haven’t done them yet is because I don’t know how crazy I’m going to go…will there be yarn and beads or just fabric and thread!?🌈🌈🦋🦋
Was trying to find my comment about the ear whooshing to edit- Anyway- it’s not BPPV- the technique is called “Canalith repositioning.” Hope it works for you if you try it! ❤
Love the conversation about compliments and I learned something new. My (42 year old) daughter and I have had a lot of conversations about this topic and both have worked hard to reprogram ourselves from diet and weight cultural programming. I’ve changed a lot of my behaviors about this. However, I have never thought about the term “flattering” as being related or about someone’s body until you raised this in your episode. I might have even been one of the people who used that term trying to say I loved your jacket, sweater etc. I don’t know if I did, but until today, I might have. If I did, I’m sorry to have made you uncomfortable in any way. I appreciate you and I especially appreciate this conversation. While not a fat person, I struggled with body image most of my life. If I could go back and do one thing differently in parenting my daughters, it would be to never mention body image, weight, or diets the whole time they were in my care. I’m happy to report that the next generation of our family will never have those conversations within our households.
I am unlearning this phrase too (and the baggage it carries) because I often say "flattering" about a color suiting someone. I think it's okay to acknowledge that people look especially great in specific colors, but then I feel a little weird trying to figure out the right phrasing. I am definitely not into body commentary, but do love giving compliments.
@@ryoknitsI like things like “That color really makes you shine!” or “That color enhances your natural charm” or even “That color suits you” Just options. Thank you for trying to find something that works for you!
Oh i just heard naomi klein on the podcast "on the media". Great stuff. You have to make quilted barrel leg pants. Sounds adorable. Love your slippers.
In making your pants, if you find batting is too bulky and you don't get enough drape, try flannel. I made a jacket with flannel, which you must prewash as it can shrink alot, and the drape is wonderful. substantial but light... and warm.
Cozy mysteries: have you read the “Agatha Raisin” series by M.C. Beaton? So many laugh out loud moments that conjure quizzical looks from anyone in proximity. Agatha drives me crazy, but she is such a hoot!! Love the view of your home in the background; so cozy and welcoming. ❤️
@@fatsquirrelfibersMe either. Have you listened to Louise Penny’s Armand Gamache series? I’m on my 3rd listen to the series. Obsessed with this author’s story telling brilliance; she is a master. (A TV series was also created, but not a fan of that at all, either.)
Right?!? I was sad when I saw “Myrna” in the TV portrayal. The filmed version just doesn’t capture the balance of diversity and personality that makes the characters feel so relatable in the books..
My word is pieted! Pie-ted! My grandmother always said that about my fair skin when I got cold and it would have colored streaks under my skin! Have you ever heard that one?
Pretty sure I have that fabric you're talking about. Brussels Washer in Nectar? I got that and pink to make something split color or color blocked. I'm not sure if I want culottes or a skirt... but I'll be swishing in my bright pink bottoms too.
The mango/green pepper thing must have been regional. I'm from New England and the first time my midwestern sisters-in-law talked about mangos, I had no idea they were talking about peppers. I assumed it was the fruit which was very strange in the context of the recipe we were discussing.
Oh yeah there was. From childhood in Illinois, Mexana medicated powder for thigh rub. Not fond memories. ( also pre air conditioning in my family home)
It was the first thing my sister-in-law asked me when we went to her home for Christmas. (Had I lost weight.) My response was "No". Then bad feelings from teen years came rolling back. People don't get it.
Thank you for an interesting and informative discussion today. I know I did that to you a few months ago and I am now very sorry for it.. if you deleted my post, that is OK with me. In the seven decades of my life, I have lost weight any number of times, and every time it got to the point where people started noticing and complementing me on it I immediately gained it all back. That’s how messed up I am. my friend, and I both agreed that we would not mention it to each other when we had lost weight because we both had exactly the same story. I appreciate the information you gave me today. I guess you can always teach this old dog a new trick. All that being said, fat chicks are fun. Not all of my friends are fat, but obviously we gravitate towards each other sometimes because of shared experiences.. onto a different topic. As a little 15 minute distraction on UA-cam, I watch a little video channel called cups and thoughts. Aesthetically it really plays me and it’s short. I bring this up because not only do I think you might enjoy it, but she just finished reading Yellowface. I think you might find that book interesting. I also find it fascinating that the person who makes cups and thoughts is a book annotator and that is endlessly interesting to watch so I’m glad she keeps it short. You talk about doppelgänger is what reminded me of this book. Going off now to Google barrel pants. 🤣😂
I am still going to think you are beautiful. On days I catch a current podcast and I am super struggling and something that made you excited gave me a ray of sunshine I might tell you again. It has very little to do with your body and more to do with you being you. Oh yea. Make the pants because why not?
Three years ago I had an OCD relapse and severe anxiety and depression as a result. I lost a lot of weight because of appetite loss. Comments like “at least you’re skinny” and “you look great” did not help.
I always like your quilts! Do you quilt them with a regular sewing machine on free motion? I sew garments and have never made a quilt. Have you ever sent out a quilt for long arm quilting?
I actually just do straight line quilting on my home machine…I haven’t delved into free motion. I have sent a quilt out for quilting, and now my mom has a long arm, so she has also quilted one of mine for me.
A couple of friends started a podcast called "Favorite Bougie Aunties" that I think you'll like. Pop culture focused. Smart but not too "thinky." And funny. That's so wild about nostalgia. I wonder how capitalism interfaces with that. It seems like we are "sold" nostalgia or sold items through nostalgia. Hmmm.
You really missed the point. So many folks in this thread have recounted how painful it is to have folks make unsolicited comments on their body changes. That is what the conversation is about.
It's SO rude to comment on someone's body!! I think it's an assertion of 'power over' because it's rooted in judgment. Also! wtf?! it's a bunch of patriarchal malarky to (try to) keep women focussed on their looks. Seriously! There are SO many other dimensions of a person, why not encourage those?
Last year I was literally dying. I had lost roughly 40 lbs unexplained and people in my little circle told me how great I looked! My circle became smaller. I appreciate this conversation so much!

The only reason I haven’t done them yet is because I don’t know how crazy I’m going to go…will there be yarn and beads or just fabric and thread!?🌈🌈🦋🦋
Yesssssss! Perhaps we need a sisterhood of the quilty pants!
We use gaulded in Alabama, too
I support the patchwork barrel pants.
Oh yes, the same thing happened to me with mangoes. I had no idea that peppers and mangoes were the same thing. Not for a very, very long time.😊
Sweet Mug...only got glimpses. Goes well with the vest! 🙂
It is a favorite…I purchased it at Rhinebeck yonks ago, and I do not regret it!
I think the quilted barrel pants sound great! I would like them in indigo with sashimi quilting! I really love your vidieos!
Was trying to find my comment about the ear whooshing to edit- Anyway- it’s not BPPV- the technique is called “Canalith repositioning.” Hope it works for you if you try it! ❤
Thank you for the recommendation!
That ruler is awesome!!
Green peppers were called mangoes at my home too. It’s a regional thing. Called cantaloupes “musk melons”. Midwest?
@@ryoknitsI like things like “That color really makes you shine!” or “That color enhances your natural charm” or even “That color suits you”
Just options. Thank you for trying to find something that works for you!
Thank you for your thoughtful apology. No worries, I am so happy that folks are working on this for our younger generations!
Oh i just heard naomi klein on the podcast "on the media". Great stuff.
You have to make quilted barrel leg pants. Sounds adorable.
Love your slippers.
In making your pants, if you find batting is too bulky and you don't get enough drape, try flannel. I made a jacket with flannel, which you must prewash as it can shrink alot, and the drape is wonderful. substantial but light... and warm.
That’s a great idea! Thank you!
"Go Louise, Go!"
In the words of some woman, sage wisdom, "You go girl".
What is this view?? I love it - like seeing the”cameras” side of things. ❤️
You are at the back of my house looking through to the front❤
Cozy mysteries: have you read the “Agatha Raisin” series by M.C. Beaton? So many laugh out loud moments that conjure quizzical looks from anyone in proximity. Agatha drives me crazy, but she is such a hoot!! Love the view of your home in the background; so cozy and welcoming. ❤️
Agatha is much loved! There is even a series, but I am not a huge fan.
@@fatsquirrelfibersMe either. Have you listened to Louise Penny’s Armand Gamache series? I’m on my 3rd listen to the series. Obsessed with this author’s story telling brilliance; she is a master. (A TV series was also created, but not a fan of that at all, either.)
@@terrismith4019 I love her too! And how did they make the bookseller a straight-sized woman in the series?!?!? I was incensed!
Ooooh? That’s a new one on me!
Pretty sure I have that fabric you're talking about. Brussels Washer in Nectar? I got that and pink to make something split color or color blocked. I'm not sure if I want culottes or a skirt... but I'll be swishing in my bright pink bottoms too.
Oooooh! I think that would be an amazing color block combo!
Western NC mountain girl here. Being gaulded is a real thing. I believe it’s more than regional.
My family used that word too lol and my Granny used LARD to rub on my legs lolol
Omg for the first time I just found sumo oranges in one of our grocery stores, it wasn't "local" ish but at least I found them!
11:35 I cant. I just can't. I'm going to quit my job, graduate school and waking the dog to stay home to make that.
JK, I'll still walk the dog.
The mango/green pepper thing must have been regional. I'm from New England and the first time my midwestern sisters-in-law talked about mangos, I had no idea they were talking about peppers. I assumed it was the fruit which was very strange in the context of the recipe we were discussing.
❤❤❤
Oh yeah there was. From childhood in Illinois, Mexana medicated powder for thigh rub. Not fond memories. ( also pre air conditioning in my family home)
I have never seen that one!!
Omg… core memory unlocked…galled/ guallded (sp?) is a word from the deep, dark recesses of my childhood as well (SE TN)… etymology, am I right?!
It was the first thing my sister-in-law asked me when we went to her home for Christmas. (Had I lost weight.) My response was "No". Then bad feelings from teen years came rolling back. People don't get it.
I grew up in southern Illinois and gaulded was the word we used too. You mean a green pepper isn’t a mango? 😂😂
❤🤗
That should have said, aesthetically it pleases me. Not plays me.
I am still going to think you are beautiful. On days I catch a current podcast and I am super struggling and something that made you excited gave me a ray of sunshine I might tell you again. It has very little to do with your body and more to do with you being you. Oh yea. Make the pants because why not?
I would love to join a FSS book club if available on Patreon
Three years ago I had an OCD relapse and severe anxiety and depression as a result. I lost a lot of weight because of appetite loss. Comments like “at least you’re skinny” and “you look great” did not help.
My mother used the term gaulded.
Omg pls buy the 90s wardrobe. Do it for your inner child
Hmmm.
Oh yes! There was an excellent segment all about marketing nostalgia!
Thank you for the recommendation. I will check them out!
Do you listen to maintenance phase? What do you think?
They are the only podcast that I listen to religiously.
Where can I find “Sarah’s yarn”?
She is anothercraftygirl.com
I love you - thank you for looking out for the fat girls
Im trying very hard to lose weight. Not everyone is losing weight for negative reasons.
You really missed the point. So many folks in this thread have recounted how painful it is to have folks make unsolicited comments on their body changes. That is what the conversation is about.
Debriding.
🧶🧡
I think it's galled.
Yes, as I said, galled is the actual word, but we definitely said “galleded.” Country folks do some interesting things with words!
@@fatsquirrelfibers My grandmother was from Louisiana and I heard some good ones when I was a kid.
Please go back to actual dates on your episodes’ titles.
Why do you prefer the date?
