Sorastro not much pressure that you have a world waiting for your instruction before they touch their minis. That is a sign of genuine respect. Congrats and another magnificent tut thank you very much. Regards Ged.
I have to admit, this THE finest armour painting tutorial I've ever seen. You achieve with brushes what most "professional" modelers can only achieve with an airbrush. The idea of painting the model in a light and shade patter is sublime. You could teach most armour modelers I know more with this one video than they've learned in decades. I saw this tutorial very early this morning, and was inspired to do something similar with an At-St I had. I set up the base coated kit next to a Bonsai tree (one of my other passions) with a daylight lamp shining behind it onto the tree, throwing shadows over the AT-ST, then took a photo or three, printed them out, and painted the dappled"shadow" effect onto the kit. Took me HOURS, but it was totally worth it :-) Every time I see one of your videos, you inspire me beyond all measure, and make me a much better modeler as a result. The only problem I have with this video is with the driver figure, as a snow trooper looks okay, but they could do better with a few variant drivers, especially the ones from the new films, with different armour more like a scout trooper. I'd love to do a jungle camo pattern version on this kit, or, better still, an East German Urban Warfare pattern (all squares/oblongs in different shades of blue), then there's the desert pattern I'd like to try..... Here I go again. All I have to do is watch one of your videos, and the ideas come pouring out in a flood :-D Can't wait for the next tutorial. All the very best Paul :-D
Been a painter for many years, but seeing these tutorials (and on something so close to my heart) has really pushed me to experiment and try these styles you've shown. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks Mark! Yes the wash is pretty amazing. I bought it a year and a half ago with the tank in mind so it's great to be able to finally get to use it :)
It really does create the most realistic drifting snow. They also make different grades of snow for regular basing or dioramas. Check out their website.
Just wanted to say thank you, I got the game and love it but the added level of Immersion from Painted figures and the fun I had painting them is greatly appreciated. Please keep up the good work.
Kudos to you; I'd have got out the airbrush for this because the moment I see a vehicle model its my immediate go-to to make the painting process easier. The ice and snow wash was a nice touch and a very interesting product; its definitely going on my wish list.
Been a subscriber for a while and never commented. Just wanted to say great job on these vids, really great. I find these types "cheap" plastic models very challenging to paint and you really need to rely on your skill as a miniatures painter and artist more due to the lack of detail. Keep up the videos. Cheers!!!
Whenever I'm done with college (3 years) I'll finally can work fulltime and have the money to buy all this paint and follow your amazing tutorials. Wonder which games you will be painting in three years, lol.
Greetings Sorastro! Hope that this message finds you well after your well deserved break? What can I say its been awhile coming...I can only echo what was said in earlier comments.. I've been eagerly waiting this tutorial in particular. I was not disappointed. Have other viewers noticed that the 'pilot/driver' figure appeared out of scale too? I have a period of leave coming up soon, so provided Er' Indoors allows, I will be trying to catch up...LoL. Brilliant tutorial as always. Sincere kind regards Johnny
Hi Johnny! Thanks a lot for the kind feedback. I haven't actually had my break yet - I'm off on Tuesday to spend some time "up North" visiting family though so will be back fully re-charged in a couple of weeks. I hope you enjoy your leave :)
I see the two-headed ettins from Descent are coming soon. I hope to see more Descent monsters after that...mostly because I own way more Descent that Imperial Assault. :)
Great tutorial, as always. Just one question - what is the plastic castle you used as a example for snow application? Thank you and keep up your amazing work! Jan
Hi Crazy Gamer! I do have the Bossk mini but I'm not sure when I'll get round to painting him. However, I did another trando in the Bossk colours way back in Episode 8 and I don't think I'd change much for the actual Bossk: ua-cam.com/video/3SY2_ySy62A/v-deo.html :)
Great tips as usual. Anyone wondering or know how it's going to be with maybe using these models in SW Legion? Are they the same scale? Are they going to use some of the same minis?
+Liquid Ocel0t Hi! It really does extend the drying time quite a bit - depending on how much you add - when compared to water. I've not done a timed comparison however so can't directly compare it to using straight retarder medium. :)
Is it just me or does it look like ffg took an old school battelstar, cut it in half and mounted a gunners spot on the top. Never noticed it before in other reviews..but as he's painting the first few layers and twirling it about, its like yep...a battlestar without its launch bays... lol..great work Sorastro as always.
Dreadfleet??? Yes Sir, I would like to see you paint the Bloody Reaver. I painted up all my scenery, bases and tokens etc but am not yet confident enough to go at the ships.
Sorastro, how do you clean up your paint palette? I have a similar one and I paint quite a bit but haven't found a good way (short of soaking it for an hour in isopropyl and then scrubbing with a toothbrush) to clean my palette. Any tips?
+Pixel Hi Pixel! I just bought a few from my local art shop, but Amazon have them too: SG Education CR 349163 Large Rectangular Palette, 3 Large And 18 Small Wells www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0711LJR6J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EvNEzbZMV8BVJ :)
and some Mon Calamari...Imperial Star Destroyer....hahahha..i would love to see you paint those starships....However nothing compares to blackplague zompieside due to the epicness of the minis..and i would also love to see from bloodrage the Valkeries and the vikings because the detail in those is very good and only you can show us how to properly paint them...from all the youtube i havent found anyone else so good...+ the music is so soothing
Hey guys if you haven't checked out the new Reaper Bones 4 Kickstarter yet you should! Right now there is about 80+ miniatures for $100. That set includes a 275mm dragon! There are a bunch of add-ons as well. Sorastro it would be great if you mentioned it on your social media! I don't work for Reaper or anything just trying to get more pledges to unlock more goodies! I understand if you can't or choose not to.
Praise St. Sorastro of the Finishing Touches, Master of the Shades, Lord of painting!!!
Lol mate :)
Our Lord has spoken!!!
Btw, brilliant painting as always.
Haha, this reminds me Duncan Rhodes aka St. Duncan of the Many Layers, :D

Thanks a lot Ged! I really appreciate that :)

Thanks so much Paul! I'm always happy to hear my videos have helped inspire such creativity in others! :)

+David Webb Thanks a lot David! That's what it's all about - pushing ourselves to try new ideas and techniques out :)
Never seen that snow wash product before, but its absolutely brilliant!
Awesome work as usual mate
Thanks Mark! Yes the wash is pretty amazing. I bought it a year and a half ago with the tank in mind so it's great to be able to finally get to use it :)

That snow wash is amazing!
Hi Sancho! Yes it sure is :)
Just wanted to say thank you, I got the game and love it but the added level of Immersion from Painted figures and the fun I had painting them is greatly appreciated. Please keep up the good work.
Thanks Chadd! It sure does make a difference once they're painted doesn't it! I'll keep the IA videos coming.. :)
Kudos to you; I'd have got out the airbrush for this because the moment I see a vehicle model its my immediate go-to to make the painting process easier. The ice and snow wash was a nice touch and a very interesting product; its definitely going on my wish list.
Thanks a lot mate! I agree that using an airbrush would be a great way to lay the base colours down :)
I started painting my first miniatures ever this month, your videos are helping me a lot. thanks
Aweseom! Thanks Pedro, and welcome to the Dark Side :)
I think that Precision Ice and Snow wash is great stuff. Bought some last year to use on Tanks miniatures.
+Apocrypha2012 I totally agree! It's a very unique product :)
The tank is lovely. It really came to life when the dark wash hit the recesses.
+Adam Meney Thanks mate :)

Thanks a lot RadixSortable! Much appreciated :D
Wow great video, wonderful job as usual. Love the 4k! :)
Cheers Joe! I'm really glad you appreciate the 4K :)
nice and good work congratulations
Thanks Victor! I'm glad you liked it :)
Just in time for my birthday, today! Thanks, Sorastro! =D
+Ron Jodway Woot! Happy birthday Ron! I hope you have a great day :)
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE you are the best Sorastro!! You realize you will become THE reference for all Imperial Guard painters? :)
Thanks Remi! :)
WILL become? ;)
damn it, you are right
Whenever I'm done with college (3 years) I'll finally can work fulltime and have the money to buy all this paint and follow your amazing tutorials. Wonder which games you will be painting in three years, lol.
Ha ha - who knows..? :)

Masterpiece!
Thanks man! :)

Can we expect Hera Syndulla and C1-10P soon?
Hi Daniel! I've got the models primed and ready; as soon as my patrons vote for them then I'll paint them :)
Great tutorial, as always. Just one question - what is the plastic castle you used as a example for snow application? Thank you and keep up your amazing work! Jan
Hi Jan! That is actually a piece of scenery from GW's "Dreadfleet" :)
Sorastro's Painting Thank you! I know this game exists, but that's all.:-)
Hey can you do Bossk next. i really want to see how to paint mine

Fantastycznie jak zawsze.
Zastanawiam się, czy będziesz malować scout trooper w barwach maskujacech jak w Wojnie Klonów?
Thank you Bartek! I'd love to do some scout trooper variations if I can find the time! :)
How long does that Glaze Medium keep the paints wet as opposed to normal water? Compared to a retarder medium?
+Liquid Ocel0t Hi! It really does extend the drying time quite a bit - depending on how much you add - when compared to water. I've not done a timed comparison however so can't directly compare it to using straight retarder medium. :)
Thanks for the reply! Really enjoy your videos. truly top notch!

+Rodney Krezek Ha - I think you may be right! Thanks Rodney :)
Dreadfleet??? Yes Sir, I would like to see you paint the Bloody Reaver. I painted up all my scenery, bases and tokens etc but am not yet confident enough to go at the ships.
Well spotted mate! Well I'm afraid my Dreadfleet pieces have all been relegated to my "bits box" for practising on :)
Sorastro, how do you clean up your paint palette? I have a similar one and I paint quite a bit but haven't found a good way (short of soaking it for an hour in isopropyl and then scrubbing with a toothbrush) to clean my palette. Any tips?
Hi Vincent! I can only suggest that you do what I do, which is to simply buy a new palette once in a while :)
Hahaha, ok. I saw your palette was super clean in this one so I thought you must have some great technique for cleaning it up. Thanks man.
New pallete? May I ask where you got it/what brand?
+Pixel Hi Pixel! I just bought a few from my local art shop, but Amazon have them too: SG Education CR 349163 Large Rectangular Palette, 3 Large And 18 Small Wells www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0711LJR6J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_EvNEzbZMV8BVJ :)
Sorastro's Painting thanks a lot man! Will be sure to get some sooner or later! :D
No problem :)
Have you done an x wing??? or will you do an x wing??? A Wing??? Corellian Corvette ???
Hi Thanasis! I had hoped to do some X-Wing repaints some time this year but have struggled to find the time. I'll see what I can do.. :)
and some Mon Calamari...Imperial Star Destroyer....hahahha..i would love to see you paint those starships....However nothing compares to blackplague zompieside due to the epicness of the minis..and i would also love to see from bloodrage the Valkeries and the vikings because the detail in those is very good and only you can show us how to properly paint them...from all the youtube i havent found anyone else so good...+ the music is so soothing
