- In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis passed the “Parents Rights in Education” law, preventing the discussion of sexuality or gender identity in kindergarten through third grades in Florida and requiring parents to be part of teacher and student meetings. Advocates say this law protects the rights of the parent. But critics nicknamed the law “Don’t Say Gay” and claim it turns back the clock on equality. Tiffany Justice and Tina Descovich, co-founders of Moms of Liberty, say every parent deserves a seat at the table to make sure that certain inappropriate content is not discussed. Candice Jackson, an attorney and mother who worked for the Department of Education under President Trump, says it’s our First Amendment right not to call someone by their preferred pronouns. However, Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality for Florida, says children need full transparency in their curriculum. Dave and Hannah Edwards are educators who say they pulled their trans daughter out of a public school after the school failed to teach transgender education in kindergarten. And, hear from Representative Joe Harding, who sponsored Governor DeSantis’ Parents Rights in Education bill. What about the millions of parents who work all day and spend less than one hour with their children. They couldn't possibly know what is best for their child. AND we KNOW this is a fact that none of these parents knew about their children being bullied, bullies, and mass murderers.

Five year olds don't need to be discussing things like sexual orientation., far far too young. I have a young grandaughter and I'm afraid of what her future will be. Five year olds just need to know simple basic things in all areas of life. They just don't have the capacity at that age to fully understand. It's just way over their heads. Let little kids enjoy being kids without filling their minds with stuff they don't need to know.

Prof. Jody Armour has the best point in this argument. The law is just too vague and isn't structured well, the law doesn't really protect teachers nor give parents comfort that they aren't being deceived. Just more evidence that our leadership is way out of touch with reality, the law should probably be rewritten to address all issues.
The other problem is that you actually have kids who are not comfortable sharing with their OWN PARENTS! THAT is actually what triggered all of this since the closed minded parents do not accept or support their child and blame the school.

Why not just put more time into peer building and teaching kids to be nice to each other ?? I wouldn’t trust my kids teacher with learning about their own identity as a person anyway… it just seems a lil too personal and could easily misguide them on both ends of the conversation

My concern is I saw a teacher that I co taught with stereotype students. We had a boy who loved Minnie mouse and his mom was amazing letting him have shoes, backpack, and clothes with that character. He still identified as a boy and one day she said something that I pulled her to the side and said why would you say that? She says well look at him and I said he can be a boy and love Minnie mouse. After that she didn't say anything and that could be because I defended his interest. I worry teachers are labeling kids behind parents back all because the kids have stereotypes that are usually associated with the opposite gender. That's what makes me upset. Just let kids be themselves and respect who they are. It's not the teachers place to label a student in s way they don't desire to. The world loves labeling people when they don't match the normal behaviors that the world thinks is normal and I'm working on removing that mentality. Let's stop labeling eachother and just love each other the way we are, not only when the person matches society norms
usually it’s the students who come out to the teachers and ask for privacy. you mention a one time out of place comment, but there’s not a trend of teachers unfairly putting lgbt labels on students.
@@babs_babs from my experience in a preschool setting it usually was a teacher stereotyping a student because their interest didn't match their gender and one I called them out on their gender bias the behavior stopped because they said you're right. It was wrong of me to say that. For older kids in like 5th to 12th grade yeah a teacher lift be a safe place to go to but before that age how much of it is us labeling a child unfairly? A lot I can assure you based on my observation.
