I hate when school officials say “we don’t condone this behavior”. Look, just because it says in the school handbook that bullying isn’t allowed doesn’t mean the students actually follow it.
Exactly. This isn't the best analogy but it's like when you tell kids to be wary of strangers. You can hammer that in their heads til the end of time. That doesn't mean they're going to listen. That's why it's necessary to have real world examples and discipline otherwise, kids can think you're talking to the wind. So it kills me when schools say this but don't actually take disciplinary steps towards children that are bullies.

What annoyed me most of this episode was that Darius was genuinely sorry, even before finding out Avery didn't survive, meanwhile his classmates were probably happy about the whole ordeal.
*EDIT* to clarify, my point is the sad irony that the one who repented for the crime got the whole sentence, while the ones who would do it again got away scot-free.
Those 2 should have been given a longer sentence then darius. And now are those 2 are probably gonna do it again

@@joewhitehead3 It seemed they only regretted getting caught, not that they assaulted someone who ended falling from a bridge, even if it wasn't them who pushed her. To them it's probably good there's one less 'weirdo' around and their families likely think the same too.

Like, should it matter that Avery wears certain things that aren't 'manly' in their eyes? This makes me even more thankful for growing up in a diverse community.
But kudos to the actors/actresses for portraying the realistic malicious behaviors of pre and post adolescents. Unfortunately, there's children and adults out in the real world; those that are willing to throw others under the bus for a variety of reasons; money, loathing, greed, sadisim, and internal damage.

So true…happened to my grandson…he was assaulted & robbed by a group of kids , 6:30pm , cars driving by, next to a Bugerking drive thru…you’d think Adults would get out their cars and stop this…he was a 16 year kid minding his own business… But nope! Most just ignore surroundings until it’s one of theirs - then it’s called police negligence 🙄…How about keeping your kids occupied, off the streets, they repeat what they see

I’m a teenager and I can honestly say that peer pressure is not an excuse for anything terrible, especially man-slaughter. Although I do think Darius shouldn’t have been sentenced as an adult.
Yeah but sadly new york state law considereds all hate crime as a felony. An A-1 felony (which the law counts this as because they did this because of the persons gender) can sadly get him 20 years minimum
I didn’t like his sentencing period. You could tell that he regretted his actions and was completely and utterly disgusted with the outcome. There were a few episodes in the show where the judge took of the original sentencing to men who raped and killed women because they seen “full remorse and misunderstanding.” When they really had none and they were full grown adults, he’s a kid who made a mistake, a terrible one and he should have been punished but not that severely.
@@staryoho2441 i agree but if the judge has to account the ramifications for events like this, if the judge does lower the punishment then the LGBTQ community can see this as someone getting away with a hate crime against a trans person, which will spark outrage, and if he doesn't lower it then he is just feeding the endless circle that happens in the prison system where people who shouldnt go to jail are put to jail where they need to rely on more crime to survive, and regarding the feeling guilty part, its hard to tell who really feels guilt or who is just faking it, if one who is faking it get away, it ruins it for everyone who does.
They did another episode that is kinda like what im talking about where a Hispanic kid (i think, been a while since i saw the episode) shoots and kills a black girl but he felt extreme guilt, they lowered the charges but the african American community saw as the law not caring for black people again and in the end another black kid (around the same age of the hispanic kid) shot and killed him.

Kid who got hurt came to briefly in the hospital and looked like she’d be just fine.
Darius apologized and drew special pictures as his way of saying sorry to her. She liked the pictures and forgave him.
She then died from complications due to the injury. (either massive stroke or a heart attack. She died instantly)
Darius was charged as an adult for manslaughter and convicted guilty

I literally can never watch this episode again😭 it broke my heart into so many pieces and I could not stop crying. Especially hearing the terrible things those boys and the adults said about the victim. Also, that the one person who showed genuine remorse and apologized got the worst punishment. Her parents even spoke on his behalf and still he will never live a normal life again. Im aware this is a tv show but it was powerful.
It was a very thought provoking episode. He was truly sorry he caused the death of the other person, and would have to live with that. Can that be punishment enough? I don't know. I was always sorry when I watched an episode like this alone, thinking it could spark an hours long conversation, going back on forth on the issue.
10 years in prison, he's 15 now he'll be in juvenile for three years until he turns 18 years old. When he turns 18 he'll get transferred to prison and due seven years inside and he'll be 25 years old when he gets out of prison.

I had transgender classmates from college and they were really nice. Granted, getting used to the name change was a little confusing but in the end, they're happy with being themselves and I can be happy for them too.

We were in a special school for adults with autism. I eventually graduated, but we lost touch. He didn't have his own cell phone and didn't have any social media, oddly enough.

What is the most outrageous about this episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit SVU is that people saw three teenagers harassing another teenage and they stood there taping it and egging them on instead of stopping them of doing it.

This episode was painful to watch. Shame on students posting it on Facebook. Darius chose to assault Avery. I didn't think he should be charged for murder because it was an accident. He was genuinely sorry. Avery forgave him.

Really was especially how Darius mother was very heartbroken and like his lawyer said sending a kid to jeuvie is not going to bring Avery back.
One other fact to think about here, I think, is; that he needed to be sentence for the fact that he is a creditable threat to society. If his developing brain led him to those actions, he (as well as his friends) must be rehabilitated. As to make sure they understand well their actions and how they were unacceptable before they are let back into society. Sending him to juvie with follow ups is acceptable, but jail could end up being too much. Time really is the ultimate teller u, and how long rehabilitation for them can take

I've seen transgenders and I think some of them are weird funny looking people but I wouldn't hate on them, I respect their sexualities.I may not agree with it but I respect it, so I am not against that, I don't have a hate crime for that an I do discriminate against them for it neither... This reminds me of tgat incident of a teen girl pushing another teen girl off of a 60 foot bridge 11 months ago.
she did that trying to play with her friend tho. she had no ill intent and was never trying to hurt her. that's not the same thing as harassing and ultimately killing someone because they chose to live their truth
I do not get why people are saying that Children who committed murder should not be trial as adults but for me it reasonable as a kid myself it is important to teach and punish them accordingly especially for killing so someone. parents should be charged on how they raised their children . creating bullys and murderers. if i acted stupid i got spanked not beat everyday, just when i was being stupid. it taught me the golden rule. morals and values are free, don't have to have any money to teach your kid right from wrong.
In the end I honestly think Darius got a slap on the wrist, he was 15 and got a 7 year sentence meaning he'd be out at 22, so his life wasn't over, of course it means he'd have to grow up in prison but it's not like he got a long sentence in which he was gonna get out as a grown man with his future gone, he'll get out an age where he can finish his education and still have a family, but more importantly he hopefully learned from his mistake so he wouldn't end up back in jail🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

This is why we need better education. Better understanding. People, especially kids, make fun of and are scared of what they don't understand. When kids understand, we have acceptance. Darrius in this episode showed true remorse. It doesn't make what he did right and he should be punished for it, but sentencing him as an adult to make an example out of him wasn't the way to go. Juvenile Hall is a thing, he needed to learn a lesson as a child who makes mistakes and wasn't taught understanding. His so called friends though? It's shown by their parents that since they have no understanding and care for differences like that, their kids won't either. Those kids can't be taught differently because of how their parents feel toward trans-folk. That it's strange and weird. And that it's okay to make fun of strange and weird. Disgusting display of parenting.
As a trans-woman of color it’s sad to say that my life expectancy is only 35 years old. I live my life tiptoeing around, trying to not be harassed or even murdered. In my freshman year of high school, I was assaulted two times in school. I even had a boy who tried to pursue a sexual relationship with me, threatened to murder me if I told anyone we had been together. In my mind the only way to extend my life expectancy is to higher my level in Society. Whether that be by fame or and or money.
Isn't your life expectancy low because of the high rate of suicides and the mental illnesses you suffer? You aren't likely to die from being murdered, but your own hand.
You do realize that life expectancy number comes from your own communities suicide rate, right? You can count the number of trans poc who are murdered every year on one hand. Get over yourself
I'm still confused on why I'm supposed to care about the kid who got sent to jail.
He outright chose to bully him and was even the first to touch him.
He got what he deserved and should've gotten more.
He was a good kid who simply made a terrible mistake, he was only 15, still a kid who still had some maturing to do, yeah he deserved prison time but he also deserved a second chance due to his age, we all make mistakes and we all deserve to learn from them and to never make them again

Black Chapters It's because This kid felt remorse and regret while the other 2 felt pride and joy for what they did and just got a slap on the wrist
I remember this episode and hated how it ended. From a race that was once persecuted and treated as second class citizens Im shocked how majority of everyone on the bridge edging the kids on to hurt that kid were black but what I hated most was how the kid who was genuinely sorry has his life ruined.

What pissed me off about this episode when I first watched it was how everyone was acting like a boy dressing like a girl was more of a crime than kids pushing a HUMAN being off a bridge I can’t remember the ending but I hope they all did get charged

Hate Crimes are very serious. Second degree assault, involuntary manslaughter plus hate crime attachment, he's screwed. Henry shouldn't have given up a jury trial.

This episode broke my heart. The transgender kid and his parents forgave the boy who pushed him. The boy was beyond remorseful. He still got taken away.

This is very real in the black community and it’s sad. They blamed the victim and acted like their children were justified in their actions.

Just because Darius was genuinely emotional and felt guilty over what he did does NOT mean that he didn’t deserve his punishment. I’m sure there are plenty of real life murderers who now feel remorse for what they did but that doesn’t mean they should be released from prison.
*And before anyone says the basic “this isn’t real” comment, I am aware. However this show and the events on it are not far from reality and stuff like this DOES happen in real life.

We all think that Darius did it, and a here’s some few things, the three kids saw Avery Parker, Darius tried to touch her dress but Avery didn’t like that, Avery told Keon to get away from him, she hit her, Darius’s sister told him that they’re getting in trouble but Avery is not getting in trouble, and Darius wouldn’t give Avery her camera back and pushed her off a bridge. The bridge is about 60 feet tall. There were three separate cell phone videos in Central Park, New York. And Keon, Marcus and Darius (in New York) needed to come with the cops for teasing Avery, so they had to take Keon and Marcus away from school and their teacher walked with Keon and Williams and Darius drew and apology for pushing Avery off a bridge and the detectives found him, and he walk with the cops to make this easy. Keon said it wasn’t his fault. His mom told a detective to talk his parents but they were in the hospital. The cop said Marcus Green pushed her off a bridge but he said he didn’t do it, so Keon and Marcus were the ones that didn’t push Avery off a bridge. Darius was the one who pushed Avery off a bridge. He was sorry for pushing Avery off a bridge. Three of them went to church, but Avery went to the hospital and did great. Six boys had their numbers held up a bit with number six leading and Avery said numbers 1, 3 and 4, the ones that teased her. Darius left the house and came with the detectives later on. We though Darius was a good boy, but he is in the court room and he went to prison until his 18th birthday after going to the court room.

He could've gone home, drew a damn comic or done his hw, but instead he taunted a trans kid for what? Wearing a skirt? If he had gone home that day, he wouldn't be in prison and Avery would still be alive. He's 14. You know not to play with a gun cuz someone could end up dead.

One of the things I hated the most about this episode was hey remind me how much I hate bullies it is a shame what they did to that kid for no reason and if you ask me they all should have went to jail not just Darius

Yeah it was a hard episode but the moment he pushed the kid over the bridge, his fate was sealed and he was in the wrong there. He deserved it and if this happened in real life, hopefully the person would learn that there are consequences for your actions.
Tbh I hated how this episode turned out, Darius drew Avery some pictures as an apology and when she saw them she accepted his apology, of course a few minutes later Avery died, like it couldn't have been that Avery survived and she and Darius met up and befriended each other and Darius either got probation or a little bit of time in juvie, every episode has to have the suspect getting a harsh prison sentence for what they did, like switch it up every now and then, Avery dying wasn't really ever in my head, I thought she was gonna make a full recovery and next thing you know she's going into shock and dies, I was like, "these mfs"
I absolutely agree with you. This episode disgusted me. It left a bad taste in my mouth especially when Avery's parents were trying to defend him and then seeing him being pleaded guilty. Whats worse of all is the mother screaming '"Nooo! My baby! That's my baby!" And she is in tear. This episode messed me up.

I am glad I, not the only one who thinks if she survived, they would end up being friends, so glad about that.
This is one of the few episodes that makes lose faith in humanity, yes justice has been done but everyone else brushed his death like it was nothing.

I could tell Darius really felt guilty about it. Worse, he did in front of his little sister. Was this an example you want to sent to traumatic event? This was the saddest episode over the fact he was sent as an example for hate crimes against transgender. Even the Avery parents didn't want that. Yes they want justice but as a juvenile not an adult. I guess there is a lot of thought on reforming laws they need to think it through.
