  • Always good to share different tools along the way. Here is a great inexpensive attachment for trimming metal or cutting openings in a vehicle.

    Rather than reply to everyone's comments.... this is a suggestion to those who are converting on miniumum tools or power. Sure there are many options and tools you could use to do the job but here are a couple of positives I can see for this tool.
    1. It's only £20
    2. Most people have a drill
    3. Less risk to paint work, no need to mask where a jigsaw may scratch, (those suggesting angles grinders, yes they would cut great but all paintwork and glass would need covering very well.)
    4. In this example where there is existing insualtion, wiring, etc inside, all other tools risk snagging, cutting or sending sparks into the cavity behind.
    5. Proabbly better for smaller cut outs and slots than most other tools.

      I'd say the shavings from a jigsaw or grinder are the biggest problem, because they fly everywhere, are small, and can rust through into paint. The tiny dust and particles from the grinder magnetised as they are cut and stuck to the van, often miles away from where I cut. They caused tiny little rust dots all over the paint, which I'm sure would eat through eventually. Took ages to get them all off. So a nibbler is one key tool I wish I had bought.

      Just make sure you collect all the bits that the nibbler cuts out, even check your shoes as these bits really make a mess of hardwood floors and rip lino and carpet, (speaking from experience) they are also very sharp, I found magnet with cloth thin over works great for picking them up, don't try brushing with you'r hand as you will cut yourself.

      That is not how any of what you said actually works. Tiny metal shavings from a saw will rust but they will not "rust through into paint". A metal shaving sitting on top of a painted surface could rust and would likely stain the painted surface but that is as far as it would go. Rust doesn't "eat through" paint. The problem is ALWAYS the opposite where a painted surface is not 100% sealed and the metal under the paint starts to rust once moisture (atmosphere) can interact with the metal.

    Angle grinder with a thin metal cutting disc!
    Nice straight lines! You can even use cordless if you want.
    It can also be used for tons of other cutting tasks.
    A jigsaw would be low on my list of tool choice for this.
    (my cordless angle grinder is a bit of a battery hog though)

    Thankyou. The nibbler is the way forward for ourselves. Just about to start from scratch the Citroen relay panel van. It's our first conversion , nervous and apprehensive . Your journey we have followed and it's been very educational. How you manage your time doing the van home and keeping the family all interested at the same time is awesome. Again thankyou. Can't wait to see end result.

    Brilliant tool - having no electricity and only a cordless drill - I had to cut the window holes out of my back doors with a stanley knife (with a pad hacksaw blade) very tedious but it worked. This would have been ideal - a must for the van toolbox.

    Run the tool along a straight edge piece of wood then you get a good straight line down side you may need someone to hold the straight edge if you can’t clamp it to work piece. Van is looking good. Thanks for sharing

    For circular drop out vents or any small circles you want to be using a HSS Hole Saw bit. Good Video.

    Hi, when installing the consumer unit for the 240v hook up do you need to bond/earth the consumer unit to the chassis?

    Great tool in your armoury. Especially if you have a raised edge to work. I managed to break my last cordless drill using one so only use a cheap corded drill now!

      I used my Makita multi tool elsewhere and worked fine, this is aimed at people who might just have a drill and need an easy affordable option.

    Never heard about a nibbler before this and I thought I knew my way around tools. Would you recommend this for cutting the panel to install a window?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  6 років тому +1

      Still think jigsaw with decent blade is fine, just need to mask the paintwork where the base touches the van. Either would do it though. Maybe use the nibbler but practice a few times in the middle of the section you are taking out.

    Hi and hello, So it means for me no nibbler. I saw how you struggled with it, so for me a no go. Otherwise a fantastic work you did there. Greetings.

    Nice tool. Looks a lot more awkward to use than the air nibbler I have for my job (car bodywork) which is a one handed operation. I'm sure a bit of practice would make it easier.

    did you vac out the filings from inside the van before they rust and eat in to the paint

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  6 років тому

      No they are all discharged out of the drill side of cutter so were caught on the cardboard on the drive.

    • @EatSleepVan

      What about the pilot hole? I have this problem too with drilling holes, I'm quite paranoid about metal filings inside the van cavities.

    • @davidm9643
      @davidm9643 6 років тому

      i meant when you were filing the hole afterwards, filings will start to rust in to paint

    I take it your going to have a sparky carry out an EICR on the electrical installation once its up and running?

    • @tobysherring1369
      @tobysherring1369 2 роки тому

      EICRs are for domestic installations. Wiring regs, Part P of building regs etc don't apply to vehicles. That said, I would be getting so electrician to do the usual tests - insulation resistance, continuity, RCD trip times, visual check of safe connectors, double insulation etc. Generally pre-wired kits are type approved.
