Great idea filling the cracks. ( I have never seen that ).
In case you had a tighter budget, or weight was an issue, you only need enough sound deadening to drop the resonant frequency of the panel to a sufficiently low level. A rough and ready way to test is to knock the panel, if it's a muted thud you likely have enough material on. If you get a slight ping, add a bit more.
so you don't have to do the full roof like how he did? etc
@@schmeggynz No, I did my own van conversion and didn't need to apply any to the roof actually! Thing is my roof was entirely corrugated and was spot welded to the inside - so it was all dead already.
I used roughly 1m2 total to cover the big panels and get their frequency down, a little strategically applied goes a long way (which is why vans now come out of the factory with small token pieces)

Good work, I can't believe how cheap it is over there. The only way to get a windscreen cover is $300NZD or make one. No second hand things like that here. Same with the sound deadener. I spent $300 on a box of Dynamat. Just did the big panels that rattled a lot. After insulation, and flooring in, it's very quiet. Love it. Well worth doing. I also found the sound deadening on the roof is great for making the rain sound quieter.

We are so happy we saw this video before starting our building. We tried installing one box of sound deadening material and loved the difference it made so much we installed two more. I know it adds weight but the comfort was worth it!

Have seen a few van insulated with extensive rust from seams. This has been caused by insulation absorbing condensation hence bad for the panels. Is the sound deadinging roll water repellent and what about insulation is that also the same
Ha!! I've got exactly those thermal screen covers, got them the other day.......free from the local tip lol!!
Should also do door panels...under dash...under hood...and engine well. Also they have a paint on product that you apply to all metal servixes like paint. I like to put tgst stiff under the dynamire padding. Then if you really waana go extreme sound proofing get yourself some of those moving quilts and mount those over the dynamite. They really reduce nouse further and offer additional insulation. I also use the moving quilrs as a pouris air gap to apply Reflectix over as a radiant barrier before foam insulation. After foam insulation I apply final layer before the wood panels which is clear pladtic sheets as a vapor barrier. For wood panels I use cypress tongue n groove. This is all a considerable investment of time and money but all worth it. Very in portant to do under dash and floors as well to prevent noise and heat from engine and street

Sound can travel through a teeny tiny hole. It bounces off everything. Yes rubber acts like a sound shield. Anything that absorbs vibration will also work. Fabric acts like a shock absorber and i find it works best. Thats why a lot of old campers had carpet on the walls. I got my sprinter van set up like a super sonic sound isolating camber in a museum.
Just In... I have been wanting to use carpet to line mine (when we get to building it), but I'm concerned about having carpet above and behind the stove and it absorbing the food/cooking smells....do you have any tips/advice for avoiding this?
Fiona Mitchell ironically I've been on this issue recently. The greasy cooking smoky air will congegate to the closest or literally the coolest places. An overhead greace grabber fan. Or my favorite a vent to outside to vent out. Years ago my brother caused a house fire. Stored oil over the stovetop overhead. We never purchased a grease fan. Left the stove on too long. Causing it to get hot enough to catch on fire. So I ran a table top airpurifier. Built my own carbon filters so I checked it daily. After a few months of use it clogged up one day after I cooked a lot of bacon . But after a good wash running hot water and soap I got the filter clean enough to pull air again. So with any other washable filter out there I'd suggest washing it twice a year. I'd never put carpet too close to a stove. But, we put wooden cabinets so that's another danger of heating your home with your stove, also the carbon monoxide poisioning. My stove in my camper is a small portable one. Last time I had a stove in a camper it was big omnious got in the way. And I wasn't big on toating it around with the extra weight. Yet it had a vent with no fan to the outside. With an easy to clean metal overhead. I saw a guy use Washable fake leather walls. He didn't like the carpet grabbing dust. And wanted the sound deadening qualities. It's so quiet in my camper van its too quiet. You can hear your heart beat and every other body noise. But I like recording musical instruments. And detest noise.

you want airflow behind the ribs it increases airflow and prevents mould from condensation. Its a metal box it needs to breathe you use sound deadener on the skin to lessen the sound vibration.
Looking good can't wait to see the layout. I used the same sound deadening in my van and closed cell foam for the insulation. Got it in a bulk pack from the deadening shop. What 12v fan are you thinking of getting? I've just ordered a maxx fan. Instead of the fiamma one.
Looking at closed cell for some of the floor. Fiamma fan plan at the moment, will look at Maxx though.

More than enough yeah. There are so many others noises to worry about that there is no point going too over the top on road noise. Cups and cutlery probably make more noise over bumps! 🙄
for the cost of 2 rolls of that sound deadening, you're half way to getting the whole van spray foamed, a 10x better option which also acts as a vapour barrier too.

It sure I’m afraid. To be honest I would be less concerned as if I did it again. The amount of insulation does much of the deadening so don’t break the bank over it.

Hard to judge. Product itself worked well and made a difference before and after. Whether it was entirely worth it with the amount of insulation used I don’t know but better to have more than less. The soft insulation seems to cut out quite a bit itself but maybe different frequencies.
I think I'll be driving mine for a while without insulation and I'm just about to take the bulk head down, so I guess it would benefit me for now?.....thanks for the advice

Bit late to the party but sikaflex is really good stuff. My door rubbers came away in my 10 reg fiesta and after paying to get it done and failing I used sikaflex and it did the job straight off.
Seems to be a bit of a Ford thing with trim and door rubbers coming away. Crappy sealant I’d say.
Have you heard of anyone using Very High Bond 3M tape in an ‘X’ on the walls to deaden sound? I’m considering doing this because of the cost & weight of Nicor & Rattletap.
What kind of windshield block you use? Can you send a link to the product?

Not sure tbh. I think there is a link in the description. It’s called dodo mat. 👍
To make the sound proofing more effective you would have wanted to push down the sound material harder. Those proud hexagons are supposed to be pushed flat that way they indicate the material has been pushed down hard enough.

Instead of using adhesive to secure the panels i would spot weld them it would be stronger and permanent.

I'm new to your channel and wanted to thank you. Your videos are very thorough and you give excellent examples of your product selection, application and the do/don't factor. I'm going to start a similar project this summer and would like your thoughts on using an insulating foam between the ribs and the roof & walls to fill the gaps completely. Overkill? Thanks again, you've got a good thing going here. Keep up the amazing work.
Glad you like the channel. I didn't want the risk of distorting the panels as can happen. WIth the pressure of the foam it can detach skin from ribs and little thermal benefit over the wool stuffing method.
if you havent already invest in a bottle of meths to clean everything before you use any form of sealant it really helps it stick and gets rid of grease and dust its worth that bit extra effort and time to get a good seal.
We did degrease in the deep clean but will try wiping with meths before we batten the floor as it will no doubt need another good clean. Cheers.

Liam Harvey what is”meths”? Methylene chloride? If so that is not a very pleasant solvent to work with especially in an enclosed space.

So...., is the sound deadening stuff worth the investment??? There is no mention of effects post installation. Could I do the same job with some thick fleece materiall?how significant is the difference in overall sound when u drove without it and with it? I assume u test drove it before further work to see? Did it make a difference??? Ur thoughts would be very much appreciated! X
Difference between nothing and sound dead dining was noticeable however I now think that the insulation alone would do a pretty decent job. There is so much more to worry about as far as noise on the road, rattling cutlery, mugs or camp chairs are more likely to be the issue!

Sorry if i dont understand it can happen .Seems to me people think that 2 cm of isolation is enough .. but its not !!
I have spoken many people whit nice new campers and campervans and they dont understand anything abouth it,and the tickness of isolation thats needed in most cases.
I leurned that 40 millimeter of insulation could be better,i wasnt satisfied whit it.
Especially when u travel for longer periods of time,and to differend climats like cold or hot..
Im suggesting it here for education and not to give criticks to anyone..
Insulation its underrated, it makes the comfort!

Would consider dropping away the background music a bit while you're speaking in future videos? By the time it gets to youtube, the music becomes a sort of impediment to understanding while you are speaking, particularly in the opening scene while you're speaking constantly (it's not as bad where there are pauses in speech). Love your channel and have been watching since you did the hemp plastering.

If you are insulating directly against the sheet metal the Dynamat is just adding weight to your build.
Al Barkley That's what i was thinking. Seems the later insulation/vapor barrier would deaden sound plenty...at least enough to sleep.
Reflectix doesn't have an R value and it requires a vacuum or space of 1" to be effective. So if you add it right up against the wall, it won't have any thermal insulation value. It may have some sound deadening ability, but not any more than much cheaper alternatives like denim or rubber sheets.
Please watch the videos, this is not reflectix.... it is a butyl rubber sound mat and not intended to provide any insulation value.
This was not insulation, it was for sound dampening. You need to watch and listen!
Don't buy a crap quality Ducato that isn't even welded together. Noted.

Hi - I had just started watching, and have to give up. The audio is so bad, with so much extraneous background noise and bad pickup of your voice - I couldn't understand a word you were saying. :-(
