    Maybe! I liked the first one enough to give the sequel a try. If even just for a few casual hours to see what it's all about. We'll see!

    Well, it's too bad the game didn't quite click with you. I consider it a very good game and have beaten it a few times, but I do understand how the checkpoint system, parry mechanics and non-linear exploration elements can be unappealing to others. Upgrading the checkpoints to fast travel points does solve a lot of the backtracking issues though.

    My family is from Spain and seeing how this game is filled with Spanish cultural allusions I was instantly hooked on this. A lot of the enemies and world design comes from Spanish festivals, old Spanish paganism and folk tales. Even the majority of the music being classical flamenco pieces is a love letter to Spanish culture. Then on top of that, taking all that Spanish and catholic culture and then distorting it into a death-metal/grindcore art style helped to draw me in even more. I would have bought the art book if it wasn't like 100$ lol

    • @Grandmastergav86

      That's one of the reasons I absolutely loved the game, as a Brit this was "fresh" to me and was fascinating. I've spent a considerable amount of time researching Northern European Folklore (predominantly Britain, Republic of Island and Scandinavian territories) and Blasphemous provided a compelling argument (not that one was needed) to research this aspect of Spanish culture.

      The art book was absolutely worth the price. I was lucky enough to snag one - it's very well put together and thoughtfully made. I think there's digital copies of it out there as well. The three different NG+ modes are way more fun than a normal NG. The DLC bosses are much more challenging than base game bosses too but they're all locked behind NG+ mode. I'm glad it's not linear though, I prefer it the way that it is. I haven't been this obsessed with a game world's lore since Bloodborne so finding all the hidden items/areas and putting in the effort to unlock the third secret ending where you basically get to kill "God" and get a tease for the sequel is what makes this such an enthralling experience. I love this game so much, it's incredible for what it is.

    Looks like you didn't break the Bell in Jondo. It actually is pretty linear for a Metroidvania type game as you don't really have to revisit areas after you beat the boss. Your only requires to go back if you want upgrades and collectables, with the odd exception. But I found it like each area was its own kind of level but you are right it's not always clear what to do. It can be frustrating as hell but I love this game. One of my favorites

    "Souls fans, I have news for you: parry systems does not equal smart combat".
    I cannot think of a single Demon/Dark souls enemy that REQUIRES parrying to beat. There are many approaches to defensive in combat in that series, spacing/positioning, dodge rolling, blocking, hyper armour, using ranged weapons/magic.
    Parrying is another tool in that toolbox, it's a high risk high reward defensive tool in the hands of a normal player, pulling off a risky parry is exhilarating but parrying is also something that allows players to demonstrate a high level of skill and knowledge against that enemies attack timing.
    One of the greatest strengths of that series is presenting challenges and you drawing/finding your preferred options and tools to overcome that challenge.
    The souls series has a high amount of player expression and skill expression.
    Anyway I understand you're literally saying Souls fans say parrying=smart combat but the implications of specifically pointing to souls fans implies the souls games require their parry systems in order to have their "smart" combat which is misinformed.
    Rant over I get a little triggered when people approaching video game analysis will do disservices to games they don't have a good understanding of but regardless I really enjoy your content and find it engaging keep up the good work.
    I'm not sure if you'd have time but if you're looking for another 3D action game you might like DmC Devil May Cry, it's combat is somewhere between GoW and DMC but with its own unquie elements going off your discussions on "character action" style games I'm super curious of your thoughts on it I have a feeling you might like it though it's generally disliked due different developers/creative direction.

    • @gabrielrosendo9553
      @gabrielrosendo9553 2 роки тому +2

      your comment is on point, I think it's funny how from creates a game that focuses on parry and "action games fans" people kill it, and platinum had already made mgr a long time ago, which is also a game that focuses a lot on parry, they are probably more accepted because it is a studio "that knows good combat"

    • @underthemayo
      @underthemayo  2 роки тому +4

      I've interacted with enough from software fans to know that plenty think that when I say I don't enjoy parrying and I find lack of animation canceling unsatisfying, it means that I just suck and want brainless button mashing combat. Especially the sekiro fans. So I don't take back what I said. If I should have said FS fans instead of specifically Souls, fine. It's not about whether there are enemies that REQUIRE parrying. It's that if you don't enjoy parries and non-cancellable melee attacks like souls and sekiro, you're inferior. I hear it daily.

    • @GobbsBrown
      @GobbsBrown 2 роки тому +3

      @@underthemayo You're definitely not inferior for not liking parry systems and I strongly disagree with anyone who makes those claims. Sounds like some elitist trolls.
      If we're talking about Sekiro then yes that game it's essential to learn to parry to finish it.
      I'm really curious on your takes on cancelable/non-cancelable attacks now.
      It's interesting how these styles are balanced aswell, enemies in older souls games and monster hunter are slow and telegraphed but you're character's actions are also very deliberate and have to commit to animations. It's more about reading/game sense/spacing than reactions.
      On the other hand games with more non-committal attacks usually have faster attacking enemies and often more on-screen. More relying on quick offensive and twitch reflexes for defensive.
      I think I know which you enjoy more but it'd be interesting to see you draw some lines of what you do/don't like.

    I really wish I could've loved Blasphemous, I love the art style, the music, the oppressive atmosphere, but there's something off about the combat for me and i can't quite put my finger on it, and there's also one thing I utterly despise in 2D games, instant death pits, they're everywhere in this game, coupled that with the very scarce checkpoints and having to retread 10-15 minutes everytime I messed up one jump, frustrated me and got old really fast.
    I made it about 70% through and I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. I personally consider Hollow Knight to be much harder than Blasphemous but it never felt a fraction as frustrating to play and I had a lot of fun the whole way through, and I do think that's what completely turned me off from Blasphemous, I just wasn't having fun playing it and it's a shame because on paper it's a game I'm supposed to really really like, but it unfortunately didn't click with me.

    I think you should probably try out Valfaris.
    It's pretty similar to this game, but with linear level design and more Contra style gameplay.
    The game lets you equip 1 primary, 1 secondary and 1 melee weapon. All that you find more of throughout the game and can upgrade. Meleeing enemies actually gives you energy which serves as ammo for your primary weapon.
    There's also an interesting checkpoint mechanic. I think theyre mostly not too far apart from each other. And the game basically rewards you with a bigger max health pool if you decide to skip a checkpoint. So if you think: "Hey this last part was pretty easy, and I wouldn't have a problem re-doing it if I died" you can consider skipping a checkpoint for more max health.
    (Though if you die and respawn at your last activated checkpoint, you always have the option to still use the checkpoint that you initially skipped in trade of the extra max hp that you got)

    It sucks that you don't enjoy metroid-style games because it means that I don't get to wholeheartedly recommend to you my favourite game of all time (or possibly my second to celeste) super metroid. It has my favourite movement of any game ive ever played, more so than even celeste and ghostrunner and its map design is ingenious to a degree that no other game has reached in my eyes. Every room is instantly recognisable and i could literally draw the map of super metroid from memory on a piece of paper. The game uses landmarks, enemy placements and visual queues to intelligently and effortlessly guide the player to the way forward. Finding hidden upgrades feel gratifying because they give you an instant boost to your arsenal. You will never get given a seemingly useless quest item in super metroid because every E-tank, reserve tank, missile, super missle and power bomb improves your character. The atmosphere created through its music and visuals is second to none for me. The game employs smart shortcuts between areas so that long backtracking sessions are few and far between. And once you master the games hidden tech, such as the wall jump, shinespark, mock ball, short charge and bomb jump? Suddenly the entire map of planet zebes is cracked wide open and you can complete the game using some ludicrous routes, including but not limited to beating mother brain and escaping the planet having beat all four main bosses in the complete reverse order that is intended.
    Despite how much i personally adore super metroid, im confident you wouldn't enjoy it one bit due to the way it's structured, which makes me a little sad but it is what it is

      Parrying in blasphemous is really easy, The most difficult part is doing lantern jump that it’s not easy

      @@lememe9781 There is a trick. The game tells you to hold down while attacking but it never freaking works. If instead, you hold the slide button, it works 100% of the time and the lantern jumps become easy. I had to find that tip on reddit before my life in this game became so much easier.

    I def think Blasphemous and Bloodstained both suffered from obtuse design decisions. There are points in this game where they literally give you no context or clues on how to proceed and the onus is on the player to figure it out by trying things. Bloodstained had a few similar moments. And let’s not get it twisted: I like solving puzzles and engaging w an unfolding puzzle box of a castle map, but I like the games to actually communicate information to me in a meaningful way and not just try to be cute and hope we all figure it out. I’ve got shit to do, I don’t have time to keep backtracking all over your map all day lol I think SotN struck an amazing balance where it gives just enough hints for you to explore on your own, and everyone has been trying (and mostly failing) to replicate that in the games that have come since

    I appreciate you sharing your opinion although I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessments. To me the back tracking is a huge feature in this game. Love the metroidvania map design.

    Let me sum the video up so no one has to waist their time, hates metroidvanias, wants a game to hold his hand, obviously he's never played a dark souls game in his life if he thinks you have to parry all the time, refuses to use his markers blames the game, refuses to talk about the god like bosses, sound design, music ect. He just wants something easy, he doesnt want to work for the win lmao

    Why do indie developers feel the need to make every game a metroidvania? It ruined The Messenger, and it ruined this game (also, I dont know if you made it that far, but the plataforming near the end of the game gets ridiculous, and as you mentioned, checkpoint being so afar, makes you bored, and you start playing badly)

    hey mayo, this might seem like a dumb question but how come you enjoy fighting the marauder but don't like parry systems? they have pretty similar ideas at the core. so is it that there are other demons to fight while fighting the marauder, keeping your engaged, or something else?

    I finished the game and i totally agree with your criticism. They failed to incorporate an important element of Metroidvania genre. The issue is that in Symphony of the Night you get tools and skills that make re-exploring the map much plausible and fun. This game fails to offer that. It's as tedious to explore even after you get most upgrades.

    I love this game (spent some 60+ hours in it) but I too feel like it should be less of a souls-like, especially when it comes to controls. There's a bit of a delay when you press attack and it drives me nuts. You also can't cancel. Hits should land instantaneously (think MK) imo and this should be compensated by tougher enemies instead.

    If you like Blasphemous and want a challenge, check out Aeterna Noctis. I think Blasphemous is one of the best Metroidvanias ever made, but have to say that Aeterna Noctis might be better. Much harder game but very rewarding and not unfair. When you die its because you aren't good enough not because an enemy teleported right on top of you. An absolute must play for any Metroidvania fan that wants a challenge.

    Hi mayo, me again, once again recommending Nioh 2, another game from team ninja and is a souls like with hyper fast gameplay, not to spoil it all but I'll give a rundown of some basics, animation cancels, weakpoints on enemies, skill trees, and 10+ super diverse and fun weapons.
    Seriously one of my favorite games of all time.

    I'm sure you've moved on, but there's an obscure mechanic that solves backtracking: donating 20,000 tears (gold) at the church lets you teleport between save points.
    The game doesn't announce that; it just happens. There's a lot the game should explain better. Instead, it gets lost under all the flavor text.
    If you do revisit it, the late game has some great puzzles.
    But it's easy to get locked out of the true ending at 100% completion because you fought two bosses in the wrong order. It's infuriating. I'm not putting another 20-30 hours into NG+ to see it.

    Sounds a lot like my experience with Axiom Verge... I LOVED the run & gun gameplay, the various abilities, and the pixel art was amazing at parts, but I just couldn't stick with it because the exploration felt fucking miserable, which is kind of a death sentence for a Metroidvania.
    I love Hollow Knight because movement is fast and fluid, the areas are all visually distinct, the map screen is large and the rooms are shaped pretty distinctly on it, and there's many generous fast travel points for such a huge world.
    Axiom Verge was like the exact opposites of Hollow Knight. Slow clunky movement, samey areas, a cramped unintelligible map screen, and barely any fast travel. It felt like literally being lost in an alien world, which I will say *does* initially sound *really cool* on paper, but I promise you it was just miserable and impenetrable and dense in a bad way. Unfortunately it sounds like Blasphemous feels the same way.
